CONTEXT

Ardence was developed with the idea of wanting to break the exclusivity and expense of experiencing the wonders of performative art. I wanted to be able to create a space that would help to “display” the talent and passion that goes into these productions while also providing an opportunity for much of the community that might not have the means to experience events of similar scale. I wanted the program to also be a reminder that you dont need fancy set-ups or a big stage to “display” your talent. It would be a space that would be open to anyone and everyone from all walks of life to share and create their passions. The graft is placed on the lawns outside of the main Gammage building where many students, faculty and visitors frequent to either hustle their next class or enjoy the weather when it is nice outside regardeless of whether or not they have the privillege of attending a show in the historic auditorium. The many trees surrounding the lawn helps to mute out the busy roads surrounding the lawn which makes it a perfect spot for the graft. The graft is embedded into the ground as I wanted people who were performing to feel as if they were inside a safe space to be their truest self while also making it so that if people wanted to watch, they would have to come right to “experience” the performance, similar to coming to Gammage to watch a show or to viewing an art piece in a gallery; a place for display.

BEHIND THE NAME

I had spent days on end trying to come up with a name that would fit the feelings I had hoped to evoke with my graft. I knew that the main focus of creating the graft was to provide a space that allowed for feelings of comfort and relaxation which would in turn lead the users to reveal or “display” their passions or even a great thought. After reading a few different definitions of the word “ardent” I had most related it to the feeling of excitement right before I get on stage to perform when I’m reminding myself to just let go and have fun or when I’ve had a shower thought about something I’ve been struggling with for days, much like coming up with the name for this graft. Ardence is in itself a physical reminder to ourselves that it is okay to take a breath and center yourself to not lose sight of the things you genuinely enjoy doing.

• centralised location for students, faculty, staff & visitors • away from heavy traffic flow

• water flow represents a free flowing spirit • adds a sense of serenity to the graft

sphere drum embedded into the ground • creates a safe space for users to freely express themselves • viewers would have to come right up to the graft to view a performance similarly to viewing a show at gammage or an art display in a gallery

• play on the idea of something being displayed in a display box • stucture is slender to not take away from the view of gammage

multileveled platforms are a node to the perserverance & dedication needed to be apart of a production or to professionally pursue performative art

SHIRIN PRAMOD KARUNAKARAN | THOMAS HARTMAN An intrusion of magma makes it's way through the existing layers of rock

Immense heat exposure from the magma causes the surrounding rock layer to turn into metamorphic rocks

Pressure formed pushes molten rock out, breaking the Earth's crust, forming a sedimentary layer Compressive forces cause the Earth's crust to shift resulting in newly formed folds

Sanchez, M. (2012). Sierra Estrella Sunrise [Photograph]. Phoenix.

Spanning 19,840 acres (8,030 ha), Sierra Estrella is a mountain range located southwest of Phoenix, Arizona. The 1.6 billion-year-old stone was first formed by a process of contact metamorphism which caused upwarderupting isoclinal folds. Later, the Earth’s crust cracked causing the refolding of the foliation hence, forming the mountains.

LATE SPRING - EARLY SUMMER

tiny white clusters of white puffball-like flowers form, attracting butterflies and bees that catalyse the pollination process

LATE SUMMER - FALL

After pollination, the flowers turn into hard brown seedpods that have green seeds inside them that will then readily germinate if the soil is moist
