Introduction To introduce ‘design’ and provide the students an opportunity to understand the historical perspectives, contemporary thoughts and the trends in design from a broader perspective. Also, sensitize and orient them towards ‘design thinking’ and ‘design as a profession’.
Course Contents Lectures and presentations by design practitioners/ professionals/educators. Indicative Topics: “What is Design in today’s context / how has design evolved / relevance of design thinking”. Audiovisuals on Design.
8
What is design according to me ? ASSIGNMENT 01 According to me design is observation one cannot give a solution unless they have identified the problem and this is not less than having a superpower because not all people can see problem in the surrounding so for me “ Design is Observation
9
Which is a well made product? ASSIGNMENT 02 “MY MOTHER’S PAINT BOX” In India, even today, many families give the newly married couple all the things they would need for their home, my mother too got her container in her wedding since then its with us. This is a well made product as you get access to all the masala at one time i realised this when i first moved to banglore I faced this problem where each time I had to unclip the masala and clip it back again and have to do this for each and every masala packet which was a tidious job.
10
Learning This module overall was an enriching and motivating week. Listening to people who’ve done incredible work in the industry imparted the sense of responsibility of creating good design to us. All the talks have an overview of the NID legacy This was a kickstarted for the semester. Also learnt that as a designer it is important to understand how all the design disciplines are interconnected and have to work together to a perfect design solution.

Introduction This course was based on brushing upon our drawing skills we built upon the foundation. In this assignment we learnt how we can show depth, shading techniques and how pressure in lines can give dimensions to the object, also how other mediums like charcoal, watercolours can be used to achieve different results
Nature drawing: Exploration of the tree, leaf and foliage
16
Perspective
Two Point Perspective: Kitchen space
Two Point Perspective Floating Cubes
In this assignment various perspectives were dentified , studied and replicated. It was done to learn about both one point and two point perspective
17
Two Point Perspective An appropriate view of the exterior of your house in two point perspective (freehand drawing). One thing that uman told was to draw a tumbnail sketch first before drawing on larger sheets which helped me in making less mistakes, this is something i learnt new in this course.

Anatomy
Object human interaction
Fig. from 3 angles
Thematic Drawing Illusion Tried to depict Self pleasure in this four paintings Even today self-pleasure is seen as a bad thing, women who openly talk about or express their sexual desire face a great deal of shame, stigma and even threat of violence. Throughout history women’s sexual urges have been repressed by society. Patriarchy required society to keep the subject -object status of a man and woman in place, where a woman’s body is considered the property and right of the man, and her role is one of reproduction, women’s have been fighting for sexual liberation and bodily autonomy as a right for years.
20
Learning The Drawing module has taught me a lot about the anatomy of the Human body and how each action can be depicted using gestures. It also gave me an insight about how different mediums can be used to create different results. I also learnt how simple strokes can be used to manipulate the light and shade of any object. How before starting on larger sheets always make a tumbnail so that one can make less mistakes. While teaching suman used to tape himself so that we can see the invisible lines which helped me deconstructing complex human figure. I now use same technique to simplify complex forms.

Bezold Effect The Bezold effect is an optical illusion, named after a German professor of meteorology, Wilhelm von Bezold who discovered that a color may appear different depending on its relation to adjacent colors. It happens when small areas of color are interspersed.
Here the bezold effect is not that effective because the pattern here is not small enough. It only works when the lines or pattern are close enough
24
Took this further in digital exploration and made some posts for instagram
25
Poster Making
The primary reason for using color in film might be obvious: to make the images colorful, dynamic, and beautiful. But there is a secondary reason that facilitates visual storytelling. The best uses of color in film also tell a story.
26
Many viewers will have predictably similar reactions to certain colors. A strong red color has been shown to raise blood pressure, while a blue color elicits a calming effect
When telling a story, colors: • Elicit psychological reactions • Draw focus to significant details • Set the tone of the movie • Represent character traits • Show changes in the story
27
Colour, time and cinema BOY MEETS GIRL We had to create a short movie with three static shots with no dialouge but colour as medium of expression. I learnt how colours interact in the environment how even the clothes the actors were plays a major role in depicting the charachters personality
28
Learning This module embodied the institute’s motto of ‘doing by learning’. The Colour module has taught me about how different colours work on their own and how they work when they are paired with other colours. It also taught me on how different tints and shades are perceived visually different. We also learnt about how different illustrators use colours to create a mood and how vividly they are used across various mediums. The exercises pushed us step out of our comfort zones. The colour module taught me how crucial colours and colour theories are to design. The number of associations we make by the mere sight of a colour, is exemplary. The additive and subtractive color theory demonstration gave me clarity about the application and source of colour coming to our eye.

Movement with dots
Finalised
A dot: The smallest most elementary unit, not a circle. A line: A dot gone for a walk, can have direction. A shape: The contours or outlines which encompass space. A form: A shape in 3 dimensional space.
32
Exploration
Using dots of the same size, by applying black ink on a white background, create a sense of motion.
Rythemic Movement with Lines Line is the trace of a moving point. It has direction and purpose. It leads the eye in a given direction.
Gestalt principle : Enclosure Proximity Symmetry Even Width Figure and Ground
We had to depict movement and rhythm using lines of three fixed thicknesses - 2mm, 4mm and 6mm.
33
Composition with basic shapes
Restriction -In one composition you can use one type of shape. - Only black & white as colour
34
Two different shapes
Two similar shapes
To draw a combination of two shapes from either squares, circles or triangles, and create emphasis in the frame.
Explorations
Two different shapes Material: Tinted sheets
35
Narrative in 7 frames Evolution of Money I tried to show evolution of money throughseven frames I have used different colour of tinted papers and have placed them above eachother to create a certain depth I have used Complimentary colour scheme to give this frames a cartoonic look and feel

Learning Composition module has taught me how dots, lines and shapes can be manipulated to depict movement , rhythm and emphasis. I also learnt how by varying the placement of the dots, lenghts of the line and the shapes can bring out various principles. We also learnt about Gestalt principles which are rules that describe how the human eye perceives visual elements.

Kitchen sub-system Study the kitchen in your home as a system individually from perspective of Stakeholders, Activity, Space, and Situation. Identify its subsystems e.g. storage system, cooking system, cleanliness & hygiene system, waste management system, finance & procurement & preservation system, finance & budgeting, energy management, meal planning & nutrition, kitchen work responsibility distribution, and so on.
46
Stakeholders, Activities and Situation We each studied our own kitchen system and we illustrated it in our way.... Here we have shown who all are the stakeholders and how an individual spends its time in kitchen and for how long they are using that space, we noticed how each age group of people have different ways of interacting with the kitchen space and what all difficulties are they facing for eg old people face problems while removing containers from top shelves or teenagers might not know in which container which dal is kept also the layout of the kitchen changes during festival times or this current pandemic situationÂ
47
Procurement and Presevation So after observing everyones kitchen layout activities that we do.....we found the preservation and procurement sub system... very interesting as each one of us has unique way to store or preserve things. To know the system in detail we started to jot down what all we knew about this or have experienced it so we started by asking simple questions and then we were able to find the anwer in more structured way questions like what we preserve, like is it preshable items or non perishable ...how it is coming through local retailer or online? Mode
48
How lifespan, availability, number of members all are contributing to this how activities like planning budgeting are affecting it....also we realised how a situation like covid or festivals can affect our procurement and preservation system.....while studying we also realised how some system are closely interrelated with other subsystems

Solution: 01 So he makes a list of all the groceries he will be needing for the coming week and he uploads the list
So this is ashish he is 23 yrs old just moved to banglore and he want to have a friends over for weekend and he decided to go and shop as he wants to prepare the meal....so he goes but gets very confused when picking the vegetables as he dont know if that vegetable is fresh or not .....but then he sees advertisement of this service and is very intrested to try it
Retailer here has all the tracks of new entries and the fulfilled orders...
At the same time when ashish uploads the list ....a middle aged women named usha who have been staying in the area for more than 20yrs now and buys all her weekly monthly goods from this shop
50
Usha hands over the parcel to the retailer and gets reedamable points in returnÂ
She is roaming in the aisle buying things for herself..... she gets this notification and will decide whether to accept the task or notÂ
Ashish gets a notification about his parcel being ready, then he can visit the store and pick that up

Solution: 02 Problem Statement: Bachelors need a way to stop the wastage of food because they have extra vegetables/fruits left in their fridge and the resolution will help them overcome the guilt of spoiling food. A module will be installed in the fridge of every individual in a community. It will be synced with an app which will give a prompt every time you add something to your fridge if you want to share it with the community. Anyone who needs an item urgently can go the app and procure from anyone who has it with mutual agreement.
52
Solution: 03 Problem Statement: Bachelors need a solution to convert the leftover food in such a way that it can be stored and used whenever required. A kitchen appliance designed in such a way that it can dehydrate the leftover food and convert it into a powder that is completely free off moisture. This powder can then be stored and used whenever required by adding the required amount of water. The end product retains the taste of the original dish.

Learning This was the module where group involvement was high, as first it was a bit difficult to manage everthying online but we learnt to time manage ourselves. As i believed in design is an observation but dint knew its actually hard to implement that, in this module i got to experience that and learnt that a simple process like chai making can also have so many micro patterns. From Design Process, I learnt how extensively a Design Problem must be studied and analysed so as to give out proper solutions for it. It also gave an insight on how important each system is and how critical and creative our solutions should be.

EXERCISES 01 Integrating two Letterforms (Latin) 02 Integrating two Letterforms (Devnagiri)
61
Integrating the initials in a form The objective of this exercise was to understand the letter forms and to integrate them in such a way that it forms a shape which is well balanced and still letters maintain its individuality.
Concept The idea was to show how I am very connected to my family I feel I am not like my parents but the truth is I am exactly like them unknowingly I have picked up habits of them, also we are very interdependant Mind Mapping

Introduction In this module, we were exposed to the fundamentals of printing technology. This module covered the basics of various printing processes, their advantages and limitations, the pre press-press-post process stages involved in any printing technique.
some notes during class
72
Learning I realised as a designer how granted i was taking the printing part of it and at the same time how important it is. If I dont know how my final product is going to get printed the design will be no good. We learnt about different printing techniques and which would be more suitable for a particular job. Also how many types of paper are there and which paper is used for which job. How to colour correct images and many more techiniqual things.

Course Objective The syllabus will make students to undergo an in-depth study and applied/ practice-based learning about the roman letterforms; their anatomical, characteristics and their visual manifestations. We’ll also briefly touch upon the anatomy and letter constructions of Devanagari. Design assignments and in-class activities will inculcate all understanding about letterforms, typestyles and classification, proportions and hierarchy; typesetting; basics of letter design as hands-on in-class activities, in-class assignments with deadlines and group activities:
EXERCISES 01 Exploring & Questioning Anatomy in Roman Typography 02 Drawing & Inking Letterforms 03 Setting a better kerning for an 8-characters word 04 Typeface Pairings & revamp packaging 05 Free-hand letter drawings on A3 cartridge and Newsprints 06 Grids & Typography 07 Wordplay 08 Timeline of Typeface Evolutions 09 Typestyles - Word Expressions
75
Introduction In this module, we learnt about the fundamentals of typography, the characteristics of letterforms. I gained an extensive knowledge as we were taught the history of typeface, what typeface to use in what context, what type size is suitable for newspapaer, books, visiting cards so on and so forth. It also looked into the study of text applications, grid systems, layout and along with typographic expression and communication.
Terms and classification Did this assignment where we grouped letters based on their similarity
76
77
Free hand letter drawing We were asked to draw letters, this exersise helped me understand anatomy better, noticed the small details like rounded serif, the thick and thins of a particulary typeface etc which i din’t pay attention to before. Also gained more confidence in drawing the letters free hand.
Garamond has medim contrast while Didot has high. Goldoni Old style has rounded serifs and the lowercase has slant serif.
78
Kerning
In this exercise we learnt how to adjust the space between letters by adjusting the negative positve space between them.
79
Type - face pairing and Package revamp Here we have to choose a package and revamp it by changing the typeface but without changing the layout of it. This was a good exercise where we learnt whats a good design and bad design and how it can be improved it helped me in creating a visual hierarchy.
80
Font pairing used Thid font R and E are wierd
Sansita Swashed In this M and O needs kerning and ketchup size has been reduced to fit under tomato This font dont give edible look and feel it looks more like a mortal combat movie poster

Typography timeline I tried to fit all the content but it was very difficult to get all the things in one poster, I tried different layouts and after asking my family members i realised that why newspaper has multicolumn grid as it is easy to read a lot of text in one go so i applied the same layout here so that i can fit as much text and still it wont be jarring for eyes
86
Learning I learned about hierarchy and layout which I had very little knowledge about. I understood how text can direct eye movement by varying text size, colour and font. I also learned about different types of typefaces and where and why are they used. It opened my view on layout design and made me explore various layouts throughout this semester.
