We know that telcos have a habit of making broadband seem so complicated and confusing… megabytes, speed, downloads… what does it all mean anyway? AAPT want to make it easier for you to understand broadband, which is why we’ve created this Broadband Internet Guide. The benefits, features and convenience of using broadband are enormous. You can use the phone and internet at the same time, it’s 4 to 26 times faster than dial-up, and your computer is always connected to the internet.
For more information visit aapt.com.au or call 13 31 40
When you are using broadband, you’re able to download music, movie trailers and photos in a flash. Now there will be no reason to let the tech jargon put you off. Enter the exciting world of broadband today.
Getting started: Here’s a list of terms to get you in the know for getting your computer hooked up to superfast broadband internet!
Broadband This is the term used to describe internet connections that are 4 to 26 times faster than dial-up (depending on the speed you select). This allows you to enjoy more of what the internet has to offer, such as downloading images, work files, listening to music or watching movie trailers. Broadband internet also gives you the freedom to be online all the time, as there is no need to ‘dial in.’
ADSL broadband There are various ways broadband connection can be delivered. ADSL is the most common type of broadband connection in Australia. It is readily available and is easy to install, as it uses your existing telephone line. AAPT use this method to provide our broadband services.
A modem does the same job with broadband that it does with dial-up connections. It enables you to access the internet over your telephone line. But the difference a broadband modem makes is that you can use both the internet and your phone at the same time.
Features and benefits of broadband • There’s no need for a second phone line, as you can surf the internet and make calls at the same time. • Each time you connect on a dial-up internet connection, it costs the same as making a local call. With broadband there are no call costs to connect to the internet. • As long as you leave your computer on, you are automatically connected to the internet – you won’t have to mess around logging on or off the internet. • Speed is the most amazing thing about broadband. Photos, music and movie trailers are quickly downloadable.
AAPT broadband offers
Megabyte usage table – How much do you need? Your monthly megabyte (MB) usage will depend entirely on the size and type of documents you download. As an example of how many megabytes some standard activities would use, we’ve compared two of AAPT’s plans each with different megabyte allowances. The table below illustrates approximately how much you’ll be able to download in a month. Check out how much you can do with the massive 12,000MB allowance. Plenty for the whole family. Activity

Megabyte (MB) The size of digital information (e.g. word documents, web pages, video files) is measured in bytes. Every time you look at a website, or download e-mails or files like movies, the information is being transmitted in bytes. 1,000 kilobytes (KB) make up 1 megabyte (MB). So, how many megabytes do some common internet functions use up? Well, for example, to view a website like ninemsn.com.au only a couple of hundred kilobytes are used, but to download a 15-second small video file, about 1 megabyte would be used.
Download Whenever you view any files, web pages or e-mails over the internet, this is known as downloading.
Upload
An ADSL broadband connection takes your existing telephone line and adds a dedicated computer link between the telephone
Upload is the opposite of download. This is when you send files over the web, such as e-mail or file transfer.
Helpful tip
What’s the difference in time saved?
To find out approximately how many MBs you’ll use in a month, go to our website and check the usage calculator.
Let’s compare the download speed of a standard dial-up modem and various broadband connection speeds. As an example we will use an MP3 song (approx 4 minutes long) which is roughly 5MB in size.

exchange and your home. The great thing about this is you can enjoy your superfast internet whilst talking on the phone, as it doesn’t interfere with your phone service! By the way, ADSL stands for Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line.

Check your home and contents policies are up-to-date Contact your insurer to find out what is and is not included in your insurance policy, and read your Product Disclosure Statements Avoid putting travel plans on social media sites such as Facebook and Twitter Ensure all doors and windows are fitted with good-quality locks, especially deadlocks for doors. Consider whether you need to install security screens over doors and windows, and a back-tobase or monitored alarm to impede burglars
Install motion-sensitive external lighting Make sure your house looks lived in - the interior should be left tidy, the gardens well maintained Ask neighbours to regularly empty your letterbox, put your bins out, and if you’re away for more than a couple of weeks, have someone trim your lawn Cut-back trees or bushes close to your house to remove hiding places Park you car or cars in the garage. If you don’t have off-street parking, park your car in a highly visible place, preferably under a streetlight, and make sure it has an alarm
Remove keys you may have hidden outside the property, such as under mats or pot plants
Check the replacement value of your home and contents and outbuildings. Check this matches your sum-insured

2010 Financial Statements
report When I was first appointed to the board of TZ Limited in June 2009, I was confronted with the company’s state of affairs. Time has passed on. At the beginning of this calendar year, once the accounts were audited and lodged with ASIC and the Annual General Meeting was held, I had the luxury of time to reflect on the technology and people that had stuck by TZ Limited throughout the difficult times. The people I refer to extend from staff and shareholders, business partners to customers and suppliers who all had made significant investment in TZ Limited and its technology at the time. TZ Limited has the two fundamental ingredients for success, people and technology. Once the group was financially restructured it was time to concentrate on the people and the technology. In terms of technology, when I stepped through the uniqueness of how shaped memory alloys are incorporated into a very simple yet effective locking system, one can see where the years of research and investment has gone.
2010 annual report
Taking that technology and imbedding a microchip with the ability to despatch commands, sense environmental conditions and to relay back data, I take the view that not only is the fastener unique but it has the ability to be ubiquitous with as many applications as there are doors, drawers or enclosures that need to be opened, closed and managed in the world.
“I am a true believer in TZ, its technology, its people”.
