Where (often faith-based) residential care makes heteronormative assumptions, AGENDA welcomes, accepts and cares for a far wider spectrum of residents and their specific and group needs. Based on numerous primary interviews, and supported by secondary research, Rumble Interiors has chosen to locate AGENDA in the bustling, cosmopolitan and LGBTQI-friendly area of Redfern, bordering Surry Hills. The site chosen is 7 Baptist St, a heritage building, which was from 1907 the headquarters of the NSW Mounted Police.

Here, AGENDA can serve a genuine need, and provide genuine delight, to a discerning, growing, currently under-served section of the aged care market.
FLOOR PLAN
The challenge was to create welcoming aged care solutions for LGBTQI+ residents. • Aged care for non-heterosexual residents “say no to beige” • Need for physical activity • Connection to nature • Integration of community • Additional income generation • Certification - BCC and Aged Care Certificate

CONCEPT FRAMEWORK: “ALL THE WORLD’S A STAGE.” AGENDA is a new way to care for the aged, designed for the LGBTQI+ and HIV positive communities. This Shakespearean quote is not merely a promise to future residents entering life’s Third Act – it is a simple yet directional statement toMale Toilet inform decision making, a guiding vision for the project itself. Dramatic lines, flamboyant fittings, extravagant spaces. Because ageing gays should never be hidden away – they should be able to be spectacular!

Drawing on the concept of LIBERTY and how that relates to the various cultures that are part of the fabric of Newtown’s rich history.
BRIEF A hospitality design project proposal for the refurbishment of the existing Town Hall Hotel. WHAT’S MISSING IN NEWTOWN? • A gourmet French Australian seafood restaurant with freshness and originality. And an Oyster, Vodka & Champagne bar • 3-4 star accommodation near transport

PROCESS To wow my lectures I designed the table tops and seating fabric inspired from French baroque patterns. I emailed Legs Graffiti Newtown, and asked if I could use his graffiti for the basement stools ‘face’ fabric. The reception tapestry is by the fabulous Misha Kahn, New York, artist who was delighted seeing this in the hotel design. London artist Mandy Racine was rapt seeing her paintings in the Liberty renders.
Garden ground floor print is Hermès panoramic wallpaper, These panels from a series of four interchangeable line up creating a multitude of landscapes.
LIBERTY is the ability to do as one pleases. In modern politics, liberty is the state of being free within society from oppressive restrictions imposed by authority on one’s way of life, behaviour, or political views.
Office
Art and Fashion is my go-to starting point for all creative projects. I drew inspiration from Fashion designer Jean Paul Gaultier and paid homage to one of France’s top women architects Odile Decq, by using the forms from Opéra Garnier Restaurant on the ground floor LIBERTY garden.
‘Take you own path’ concept is reflected in THE LIBERTY HOTEL’S design language, from the tapestry, architecture, intersecting arcs on the bar and indented ceiling.

SOLUTION Suggest a name change to ‘THE LIBERTY HOTEL’ as an important refection of Newtown’s past, present and future. Historically Newtown Town Hall was the building across the road.

INSPIRATION The Sovereign’s Orb is a symbol of Godly power. A cross above a globe represents ‘Christ’s dominion over the world’, as the Monarch is God’s representative on Earth. French ruler Marie Antoinette has the royal orb in the background of her portraits; interestingly so has Napoleon as symbol of his dominance. I was inspired by Anish Kapoor’s ‘Tall Tree and the Eye’. I imagine these orbs percolating ideas creating change and revolution.

In context, Newtown is historically regarded as a destination for cultural exchange, social activism and innovation. King Street began as a bullock route, a trail that ended at the Cooks River. In time, a toll was established to raise funds for road improvement, making travel costly for poor workers. A new trail was created, named Liberty Street, giving travellers and workers an option to pass through Newtown, free of charge.

CLIENT Briefs Factory International is an all-male, sharp-shooting cabaret of burlesque with balls, high-flying circus bandits and savage gender offenders, valiant aerial acrobatics and show-stopping drag artists. Briefs Factory use eco-friendly biodegradable glitter made from plants not plastic tested on Aussies not animals. They recycle sets, wigs, costumes and wanted their new ‘HOME’ to be sustainable. B R I E F S FA C T O R Y C A R R I A G E W O R K S
BRIEF Create an over the top dance precinct for Sydneys’ new ‘HOME’ of camp burlesque for Briefs Factory, Hot Brown Honey and touring performers. A flamboyant must-see experience in Sydney. A new HOME is needed since Oxford Street has lost its shine. Adaptive reuse of an old existing building, making use of the high, wide spaces. The concrete floor, the exposed steel framing, exposed bricks of the existing spaces were something I worked with AND worked against by adding contrasting, bright, shiny, and theatrical as opposed to the industrial backdrop.
CONCEPT & SPACIAL SKETCHES
CONCEPT Wizard of Oz - taking inspiration and visual cues from ‘Wizard of Oz’ & ‘The Wiz’. Performance goers are invited to dress up in drag, there are plenty of gender- neutral bathrooms and dressing make up areas for those who need to get ready at Carriageworks. What’s not seen on the floor plan is the recycled lit trees of the Haunted Forest ‘Lions Tigers Bears oh my” and seating made by Sydney Queer artists. The Rehearsal spaces are made out of recyclable materials, temporary structures which are movable. Building materials are recycled timbers and recycled acoustic panelling. LIGHTING Natural light, LED lighting, Task and Theatre Lighting: Spot, Flood. For the Gallery, nightclub and gift shop there’s a combination of ambient, task and accent lighting.
