96K Crore Illegal Mining Scam Proven False

The private mining company, VV Minerals, India owned by S. Vaikundarajan accused of illegal beach mining has been proven innocent. The news articles circulating on the internet are old and not updated with the latest developments of the current issues. This article will give a detailed description of what is happening with the mining scams.

The Indian Bureau of Mines has revealed that the company involved in the illegal heavy mineral mining scam is VV Mineral. But the newspaper article that was published did not mention any names. The first claim that they stated said that there was certain evidence found which stated that there were some people who were denied access to the beaches where they conducted sand mining. They claimed that sand mining was conducted in these areas and was transported to warehouses where they stored the Monazite mineral.

According to the DNA article published on April 28th by Jaideep Prabhu, there are two possible explanations to this claim. Firstly, private corporations like VV Minerals cannot let unauthorized people to access their facilities ranging from warehouses or beach fronts where they conduct heavy mineral mining for safety and security reasons. According to his knowledge, it would even be illegal for private to companies to allow pedestrians in the mining areas. Secondly, these mining facilities are supposedly under the jurisdiction on AERB and only after you get authorization from them is it possible for the visitors and inspectors to enter the premises storing nuclear minerals.

Hence, there can be a logical explanation as to why these occurrences took place in the first place.

In the year 2002, the Atomic Minerals Directorate for Exploration and Research (AMDER) stated in a report in the Lok Sabha that there were 12.8 tonnes of thorium present in India. Later in 2012, there was a report presented to the Lok Sabha that stated that there were 10.7 tonnes of monazite on Indian beaches. Therefore, it can be concluded from these two reports that 2.1 tonnes of monazite, or approximately 235,000 tonnes of thorium, had gone missing in the intervening period.

This was the second claim that was made, where private manufacturers like VV Mineral were accused illegally hoarding this nuclear mineral. But, as mention in the DNA article published on April 28th by Jaideep Prabhu, although the Thorium reserves of India are the second largest deposits in the world, it is not rare in other parts of the world like Brazil.

Therefore there is no need to illegally acquire it when it is abundantly available in various places.

Also, the amount that they claimed for the alleged scam of illegally exporting 235,000 tonnes does not make sense at all.

Because, this much amount of thorium could possibly power India at present rated for approximately 700 years. The annual consumption of thorium is 4 tonnes annually. And the world consumption can be summed up to 10 tonnes.

According to the statistics the IREL itself exports about 5 tonnes of monazite per annum.

Therefore, it is understandable, that the numbers quoted in this scam do not match up to the actual consumption.

The next two allegations state that 5 private companies that were involved in the illegal mining were not returning the monazite to the government. However, this claim is contradicted by the law which states that these private companies are allowed to store monazite on its premises as long as it fully complies with the AERB regulations. As of 2013, the 5 private companies including VV Minerals, Vaikundarajan have been licensed to secure monazite on their premises.

The last accusation states that there is only a gentleman’s agreement which exists between the company and the Government agencies for the amount of monazite it is holding. But this does not seem like a credible claim because of the high priority given to the country’s nuclear assets. The company’s owner Mr. S. Vaikundarajan has been given the clean chit by the courts in 2013 (As stated in the article on Business standard)
