No Environmental Hazards in Heavy Mineral Mining activities: VV Minerals
VV Mineral is a family grown business, founded by Mr. S Vaikundarajan, Chairman of VV Group. They produce 12,000 metric tonnes of zircon, annually. The company manufactures and exports heavy minerals such as garnet, rutile and ilmenite in India and many parts of the globe.
The heavy mineral mining’s process begins with the extraction of mineral rich sand from the sea shores. The extracted material is then transported to a processing plant. Unlike in most parts of the world, in India, extraction is done manually by using hand tools. In heavy mineral mining, one needs to extract sand from the shores. However, as the extracted sand is brought back to the shores and filled in the places where mining was conducted it does not lead to any depreciation of land.
Only, when the right amount of care is taken, the entire process will be pollutant free. Sustainable methods of mining see to it that there are no environmental hazards caused by this activity and ensures very less or no harm to the people living near the mining areas.
The activities listed below can be taken by mining companies for sustaining the environment while mining:
 Use sprinklers at mining sites to reduce the spread of red dust in the atmosphere  Afforestation is a good method to reclaim and rehabilitate of dormant mines.
 Nearby villages if supplied with recycled water from mines can use it for secondary purposes.  Mechanised road sweepers can clean up the surroundings on mining routes. Before we are critical towards the mining industry in relation to its environmentally destructive process, it benefits must be noted. It may just be more beneficial that harmful. It is no secret that mining has its shortcomings which affect its surrounding. Yet, there are various sustainable activities that help in reducing these drawbacks.
Mining is site specific. It basically means the mining is only conducted where minerals are present. In most cases, minerals are located in underdeveloped tribal areas. This means lack of roads and basic amenities like health, education, sanitation. All of these social problems are reduced as mining creates opportunity of development in these regions.
Another point to be noted is that minerals are a finite, non-renewable resource. Therefore, mining is a temporary activity. It will cease to exist after resources
are exhausted in that area. Also its impact on the environment is momentary and can be minimized through sustainable mining. Once mining ceases in an area, the land is quickly rehabilitated and returned to its pre-mining state.
VV Mineral, India is an environmentally conscious company. Set up in 1989, the Tamil Nadu based company, has over the years taken various steps to conserve water. As it is a water conscious company, VV Mineral does not use chemicals in its concentration plants and does not use fresh water in mining process. With its continuous efforts to conserve water, the company has saved more than 1.2 million kl annually. Also to generate power, they use wind mills.
