SCHOOL AS FACTORY SCHOOL: Columbia INSTRUCTOR: Mimi Hoang, Eric Bunge YEAR: 2014 PROGRAM: School
The development of workshop machines, such as CNC router, 3d Printing Machine and Robot arm, provokes architecture students to combine their theory with practical experiment. In this project, we try to introduce the operation system and spatial prototype which we learn from the factory into our school design.

PROGRAM There are three main functions coexist in this building, they are independent but also connected, each function has its main entrance and vertical core, meanwhile they also meet each other in some specific areas. Our functional layout more focuses on the concept of “zones”. Three main functions are divided into several small “zones”, which spread up and down inside the building, so that to stimulate students’ cooperation, communication and working efficiency.

damental architectural elements, we are only allowed to choose one fundamental architectural element which is not mentioned by Rem Koolhaas in 14th Venice Biennale to do our design. And I try to use “beam” to explore a totally new type of hotel.

DETAIL Although the beam I use is so large, I still want it work as a beam not a combination of a slab and two walls. So this is very important to figure out how this huge beam can span between two party walls with around 30 meters. In order to fasten this huge beam to the party walls, I design some details like the image showed on the right.

TYPOLOGICAL CORRECTION SCHOOL: Columbia INSTRUCTOR: Juan Herreros YEAR: 2015 PROGRAM: Urban Design & Renovation
The theme of the studio is about typological correction, based on my analysis, our typological correction happens on three different scale: 1.Urban Podium 2.Tower 3.Block. All of them together works as an agricultural network, which could not only intensify the connection between the existing networks on our site, but also work as a food production center of upper Manhattan to serve the city.
8
9
URBAN PODIUM The urban podium is the interface of the vertical greenhouse and the city, so we want it to be an urban farming area as well as an urban plaza, so that at this level we changed the previous residential program to a library, office, bar and gallery, and also introduced other collective programs, like gym, museum, and playground. All of them are surrounded by a productive and efficient cultivation space.
10
11
TOWER CORRECTION In terms of the tower typology correction, I keep the existing structure system, and change the residential space to linear unit to make sure that each unit has equal quality and directly connect with the extension greenhouse space, while the continuous strip wall represents the function of equipment system. And the new structure is a symbiotic space in which rental offices and circular elevators are surrounded by planting area, so that to change the living experience.

RETHINKING BIM SCHOOL: Columbia INSTRUCTOR: John Lee YEAR: 2014 PROGRAM: Facade
This project is the assignment of my visual study class “rethinking BIM”, the aim of the class is to learn how to build model and do parametric design by using the tool of Revit. So I not only build a basic model of an apartment building(including floors, columns, windows, etc), but also use a function named “adaptive component” to design a parametric facade for this building.

ADAPTABILITY The parametric facade works as a dynamic system which is influenced by the distance and angle between the sun and the building. With the movement of the sun in a day, each unit of the facade will react due to the distance between the sun and itself, when the distance become closer, the unit will close a little bit to prevent too much radiation from the sunlight, on the contrary, it will open a little bit to let more sunlight come into the building.

AXONOMETRIC VIEW
SCHOOL: XAUAT INSTRUCTOR: Qian Zhang YEAR: 2013 PROGRAM: Social Housing
Our lives today are becoming more and more crowded, the environment becomes much poorer, and the neighborhood relations have been severely damaged, as an architect, shouldn’t we rethink on this state that do we really want it? Why don’t we try to turn back to our basic lives in which we live in harmony with the natural environment, different people meet each other in different space, known each other, become friends, and we could find the happiness of our lives?

SCHOOL: XAUAT INSTRUCTOR: Yueyan Li YEAR: 2013 PROGRAM: Housing
This project lasted around two years, from initial design to the final construction, our team experienced a variety of unexpected difficulties, but with the collaboration of team members from different majors, we successfully built it. Almost all the energy consumption of this building comes from solar energy, and we also use some traditional materials and methods to maintain a comfortable indoor environment without the assistance of any equipment. Finally, in the we got 8th in 22 teams from 35 universities in 13 countries.

SECTION The building is fully functioned, the entire building space including living room, bedroom, studio, kitchen, bathroom, laundry, and equipment. The space layout takes into account the static and dynamic partitions, public spaces are in a large unified space, which promotes the exchange of every life, while helping to exhibit design information. Servant space are set on the north side of building to facilitate the linkages between the equipments; servant spaces can be separated from the main space via sliding partitions, in the night the servant spaces will be closed to reduce air conditioning usage and energy consumption.

MUTATION
PROCESS
SCHOOL: XAUAT INSTRUCTOR: Bingyang Hou YEAR: 2012 PROGRAM: Student Center
This project starts from the control of the site, I try to distort the traditional grid to have a “mutated” grid. Following the new “grid”, the building naturally grows from the plaza, and even its roof becomes a part of the plaza which helps to keep the previous activities that used to happen here.

GUGGENHEIM HELSINKI
RE-IMAGINE WHARF
PROJECT LOCATION: Helsinki, Finland STATUS: Competition AREA: 12,150 m² PROGRAM: Art Wharf
nARCHITECTS saw the Guggenheim Helsinki competition as presenting two inter-related opportunities: to propose a vision for Eteläsatama’s transformation into a civic destination for contemporary art, design, and architecture, and to develop a new engine for the conception and experience of current and future media and forms of art. The Art Wharf unites these twin goals by locating the experience of art within an inherently urban framework.
