MOON D i nne r w a r e D e si gn

Cli e nt: JI U MAOJI U Oc t.2012 - N ov.2012 Fou r we e k P roj e c t I nd e p e nd e nt Foc u s: For m- fi nd i ng This project is to design dinnerware for a chain restaurant, in which our instructor introduced a new method Form-Finding, to help us develope ideas for shapes and material. Forming-finding is about finding connections between life and form, and I found that there is an old poetry about Moon can be a great link to dinnerware.

Reasearch About JIU MAO JIU JIU MAO JIU is a Chain Restaurant from Guangzhou, which has over 20 restaurants all over the country. It serves mainly Noodles from Shanxi, a province in China famous for its variety of noodles.

About MELAMINE

Our class is asked to design a set of bowls for noodles, and they specifically require MELAMINE for material.

Melamine is an organic compound that is often combined with formaldehyde to produce melamine resin, a synthetic polymer that is fire resistant and heat tolerant. The resin is a versatile material that has a highly stable structure.

It is the best way to do research that I go there myself. I found the dinnerware they were using is also made of melamine, a round bowl and a quare plate, no texture or color. They were simply, but a little boring.

Melamine can be easily molded while warm but will set into a fixed form, which makes it suitable for dinnerware.

JIUMAOJIU is also famous for its honesty, economic price and valuable service in the food business.

EARLY STAGE T H E

U N I V E R S

I

was fascinated by the planetary orbits, their obliquities are different and beautiful, why can’t we take them to the bowls? But this idea was soon turned down, because the big obliquity required more material for useless space, and the bowl can not take in enough food.

Most bowls are round or square, there is no personality in it. After the visit to Jiumaojiu,I decided to do somehing special. We were asked to sketch basing on real things in life, like a boat, or a kind of plant. The first thing came to my mind is the word ‘Univers’. I was hoping something so big like the univers provided the necessary contrast to design something small like a bowl.

S

o I decreased the angle, still keep it unbalanced and asymmetrical. The left part is splited up for vinegar or other sauces.

H

ow the orbits overlap with each other is also an inspiration. At first I was thinking, when the dinnerware are piled up, on the side you can see those edges overlaping like obrits. I think these can be applied to the surface of the bowl.

BACK TO BASIC T

H

E

M

O

O

N

Even with all those sketches, these shapes are too fancy for Jiumaojiu. These forms are against their simply business philosophy. So I try to think smaller. An old poetry about moon suddently came to my mind. It saids:”the Moon has its times of being clear or cvercast as well as being full or eclipsed, nothing in the world is really perfect.”

I

tried to add details on the side, make them incomplete, imperfect to be exact.

W

hat if I change the bottom? It surely make it easier for people to hold them, but it looked a little too cute.

I

started to see the three bowls in a whole, can they make any connections between each other? Where the full moon and eclipsed moon meet?

A

fter all these attempts, I realized no form that is perfect, and ZEN said, everything is connected, no matter it’s physically connecting or not. Why can’t we just go back to the BASIC, try to design from the initial state, the similarity between the moon and bowls.

For thousands of years, Chinese people have track time with waxes and wanes of the moon, it becomes a symbol of time. For thousands of years, noodles are the staple food for Chinese. These three bowls represent three different stages of the lunar cycle. As time went by, noodles still plays an very important role in our life.

All of our food comes from Mother Earth, she nutures every one of us with her wrinkly face. The texture on the suface are symbolics of the rugged earth. When you are holding the bowl, you can feel the tactile grooves and find yourself constantly touching it unconsciously.

I have also created a gradual color change on the surface. At the bottom, color are slightly different from the top. It represents Jiumaojiu 15 years of experience in food business.Than’s probably not much comparing to those magnates in the industry, but they are growing, accumulating.

Due the short period of time, we were unable to make a real size model, but this project demonstrated my ability to complete the design process in a relatively short time. We were inspired by the figure of tress and decided to do something organic and natural.

ORGANIC

In contemporary seat design, organic configuration is more and more fond of Designers. Its lacking of edges and corners, gives people senses of mild and warm.

LANKY

In Modern aesthetic, we always find lanky more flattered, no matter in fashion or furniture design. Its continuously extending gesture exhibits neat and magnanimity.

3D Modeling MAZE

We are inspired by crisscross of bushes, creating a picturesque disorder. It is relaxed and carefree. We w a n t e d t o j u m p o u t o f t h e geometric box, tried to find the aesthetic Irregular shape. You can see there is no single part of the chair that is the same, everything is in a costantly changing state.

About Bagasses It all starts from here, Sugarcane. Sugar cane is one of the major raw materials for sugar production. China is the third largest country of sugarcane production.

In the end of the pencil, there is a color paper with outlines of different flowers. There is also a SEED planted in it, which can be grown later, when the pencil become too short to write.

HEAL THE WORLD Flower Outlines

Environmental protection and child education are two main topics in design. Stoping degeneration of our time is the same as providing better future for our children. Design and designers should take responsibilities, as we are powerful enough to change the world, even with the smallest things like pencils. If we care about every little things in the world, we and our children can heal the world and live in a better place like the MJ song.

Online shopping are convenient most of the time, but it may not be true to furniture purchasing. Because furnitures last longer than other products, people are more discreet choosing them. And photos and discriptions online may not be enough to ensure them. However, there are also factors are rather appealing to consumers, return policy is one of them. With 68% of people agree with online funiture shopping, we do see the bright future of it. What we also have to see is that it might take a long time for people to embrace it completely. So, our team suggest the Ecolo company to develope online store and an experience entity shop at the same time.

There are certaintly many problems in regularsocket, but what concernd me most is the universal design of socket. The plugs are often too tight, we can’t pull it out unless we use both our hands, not to mention those with disabilities. This socket I designed works like a push button, can be easily used with even just one hand. Every socket itself is a switch, the ‘cover’ hides the real socket contact underneath. It also prevents children to slip their fingers in. With a green light circled, button socket reminds you to cut off the power and make it easier to plug in the dark.

Oct. 2011 - Dec. 201 Course work Te a m e d R e se a r c h / I n d e pe nde nt D e sign Fo c us : P r oph ase R e se arc h In the course of product design II, the theme that we worked on was “Things around us. Our team decided to take a look at shopping carts. We use shopping cart every time in the supermarket, but there are many unseen problems in it. So we did online and field research to identified these problems. Though the design of shopping carts are problematic, each of us gave different solutions to these problems. I focused on the energy recycling and shopping experience in my fianl design work.

Field Work

PARKnSHOP from Hongkong & JUSCO from Japan

Our team went to two of our biggest supermarkets in Guangzhou, they represented two mainstreams of shopping cart we use in China. The first one is from PARKnSHOP, this type of wire shopping cart are mostly used in the western world. The second one is from JUSCO, this type of shopping cart comes from Japan, with two wire shelves where the baskets can be put into. Here are some scenes we record from the supermarket. 1.Nested carts being returned. But 2.Older kids are put in the cart the wire carts are too heavy that it instead of the baby seat, the seat is required two staff to move them. obviously too small for her.

3.People without children are using those carts with baby seat. Also the sear is too low for the baby because it may get kicked or kick their parents easily.

4.The upper basket are more oftenly used, the lower one is harder carry up to the cashier. Also, frozen food and drinks are mixed with other groceries.

5.Baskets are pile up along the 6.This baby is put in a basket passageway for those don’t want again, but this basket is smaller, to carry a trolley or need a second and more dangerous for the baby. one.

Concepts development

Problem Identifying

The shopping cart can be more than means to carry groceries. It can connect to people in a more EMOTIONAL way. Like some people love to ride shopping carts. Can we create some emotional attachment?

The baby seat is terriblely designed according to most parent we interviewed. The seat is extremely UNCOMFORTABLE for baby to sit, and is too small for kids older than two years old.

The shopping cart basket is too BIG for chinese. Because supermarkets in China are realtively small, and the passageways are narrow that two carts can hardly get through at the same time.

The further end of the cart is LOWER than the colser one, which makes it harder to reach things in the bottom of the cart.

The wire frame of the cart is too HEAVY for people to control. Another thing is that shopping carts are rarely carried to the open air, shopping cart theft SELDOM happens. The cart’s wheels are FIXED straight for stability and safety resons, but it makes cart hard to turn.

Before going to the actual supermarket, you will receive discount information from various ways, for example, flyers in the mailbox, social networking or talking to your friends.

The Shopping Experience

During the shopping, the movement of human are used as power, gathered to support the digital advertising board on the side. The more time your spend in the merket, the more you walk, the more you walk, more energy are gathered. The more enetgy you save, the more discount you can get when you check out. In result, people are spending more time in the market to get discounts and actually buying more goods.
