Delicate Teaching Machine Individual work Site: Beijing, China In the application process of architectural postgraduate Programmes, the portfolio is regarded as a crucial part valued by all applicants. In China, almost every applicant is familiar with those kinds of institutes focusing on portfolio tutorials. Different from traditional study abroad agency, they quickly monopolized this market segment with highly professional and targeted services. These institutes often tout themselves as architectural academic institutions and design their curriculum by imitating famous architecture schools. Applicants can attend the programme by purchasing courses that are usually expensive, overly exaggerated, simplified, and highly pragmatic. Although academic fraud and plagiarism have happened occasionally in the past few years, more than 1/3 of applications from Mainland China still participate in those programmes due to the highly successful application rate. Meanwhile, those who cannot afford the high tuition fees will be further exploited. This project paints a picture of how old notions of teaching machines are being reborn through a seduction of data analytics and competency-based personalization. It is also intended to be a declaration against the pragmatism on academic research and bring a rethinking about our architecture education system.

Several expressions of the concept drawing This course introduces the three categories of design concept drawings: collage, sketch and schematic. And based on more than 30 case sharing, introduce a variety of concept map expression methods. It is designed to allow students to open their minds and make the most powerful concept maps according to their own specific designs. Axonometric drawing expression and production This course will help students learn how to efficiently and quickly produce axonometric drawings, including drawing skills and a complete set of workflows. In the final stage of the competition or professional class sprint drawing, it can not only show the details of the design itself, but also vividly express the relationship between the building and the public space and the site from a bird's-eye perspective. And it can be combined with indoor perspective drawing to form a complete drawing system. Sustainable Urban Rainwater Management Design Provide new ideas for design, and enhance the depth, science and practice of design. Combining cases, understand and distinguish the problems and solutions of water treatment and rainwater management in the urban environment, understand some basic concepts of urban rainwater management, and understand low impact development and Green storm water infrastructure specific measures. Analysis and expression of lighting design In the design, light "-artificial light" and "light"-natural light contain countless possibilities. This course will start with the basic principles, teach you the three-step method of lighting design, and combine case analysis to increase your comprehensive understanding of light. Help you diversify design ideas and expand design thinking.

Bird Paradise-Habitat Ecological Restoration and Planning Human beings have never been the owners of the earth. While we enjoy the resources that the earth gives us, other creatures also share resources with us. With the emphasis on the ecological environment in recent years, the restoration of bird habitats has gradually become a topic of common concern for urban and rural planners, architects and landscape architects. How to build a bird inhabiting paradise with "human-bird symbiosis" is this time The core idea of the subject. The Game of the Commons-"Sorrows and Joys" of the Shepherd Based on the understanding of the "tragedy of the commons", in the learning process of this design studio, students will discover the shared resources in the city or the established environment from the perspective of the designer, such as traditional renewable natural resources, or random With the information-based shared resources brought about by the development of science and technology. The entire design room will lead the students to use the thinking of topological transformation to establish an architectural language expression based on their own disciplinary background, through the interpretation of complex problems at the realistic level, to exercise the analysis methods for the special environment and cultivate the corresponding design process. Timber City Seattle offer a unique opportunity for this research based design studio to generate new ideas and rethink a new sustainable approach towards the built environment at multiple scales across diverse disciplines, planning, urban design, architecture and landscape design. This design studio is based on the platform of Tianqi Architecture Competition. The new coronavirus epidemic has swept across the country recently. We hope to use this as an opportunity to discuss how buildings and communities can become shelters to continue human survival when major disasters in the future come suddenly. Students can use their imagination according to the specific environment to design a self-sufficient closed-loop life support system for the earth after the end of the disaster, and then solve the survival problem of 160 people anywhere on the earth.

The exorbitant tuition fees that are far beyond the industry standards are exploiting ordinary international students.

Unlike other postgraduate degree programmes, portfolio is crucial for the application on architecture- related programme. And producing a portfolio is not a joyful experience for most students. The portfolio training institutes see these as business opportunities, and design a curriculum-based on one-on-one Online course that covers the full range of producing a portfolio.

This diagram illustrate how these portfolio institutes making profit and working as a delicate teaching machines. The diagram is divided into three interwoven sectors: Media, Marketing and Education. Through those detailed process, a concept comes to mind that these institutes are trying to hide the essence of a profit-seeking company and preaching themselves as educational institutes with world-wide vision. In order to achieve that, all the courses, are designed for a single purpose - to get an offer. In this single-purpose-oriented institute, utilitarianism and plagiarism will be systematic.

Double sides A: School These institutes advocate themselves as academic institutes, which are pioneers, free to speak and with worldwide vision, to underline the legitimacy of being a complement somethings substitution to official architectural school. However, the knowledge taught by tutors has always been oversimplified, such as “all you need to know about composing”, which will satisfy students with a sense of fulfillment, but, in the meanwhile, it is easy for students to stop their step of further study.

A

B

B: Offer Factory The portfolio institutes are centralized, growing in power and well-funded by venture capitalists and corporations. Many institutes are looking to profit from student (and tutors) data that can be easily collected, stored, processed, customized, analyzed, and then ultimately (re)sold. The Offer Rate is the only “KPI”, which determinate whether an institute is successful. From this perspective those institutes are sort of offer factories.

1. Gund Hall in GSD

2. MIT Building 7

3. Sci-Arc

Gund Hall in GSD Harvard is well known for it’s great stepping -lit collective studio space by long trusses. The portfolio institute learn from it to build their own studio space.

The Building 7, designed by William Welles Bosworth to give MIT a suitably grand entrance on Mass Ave, was also where the MIT’s architecture and planning school located. The classic facade gives it a cultural feeling.

Sci-arc is one of the most pioneer architectural school among the world, which is popular for the cool drawing and model in Chinese architecture student. The portfolio institute will also learn form it.

4. AASchool

5. Bartlett UCL

6. YSOA

AAschool as one of the most famous unofficial architecture school in the world is the great prototype for those portfolio institute who enforce to be an academical organization in the future.

Bartlett is the most popular architecture school for Chinese applicants who prefer to study in UK. Also most portfolio institutes’s tutors are graduated from Bartlett.

Yale school of architecture is known for it’s foundational education in architecture which is also popular in China.

Duplicitous Building The portfolio insititues are paradoxical and Duplicatious. It involves two controdictory sides, school and the offer factory, which is peculiarly intergrated in a single building.

1. Billboard

2. Floating Platform

3. Productivity

Advertisements are crucial for the portfolio institute to recruit students and it’s always exaggerated and advocated. However, today’s advertisements don’t use Billboard anymore, that they run the architectural media themselves.

The Floating platform is a conceptual metaphor used to illustrate the great future once the students get an offer from a elite school which is advocating by those portfolio insititutes.

Profit seeking is always the key for the business company. Among those portfolio company, offer is related to the profit directly and it is the only “KPI” for tutors. Offer rate is the Productivity.

This project paints a picture of how old notions of teaching machines are being reborn through a seduction of data analytics and competency-based personalization. It is also intended to be a declaration against the pragmatism on academic research and bring a rethinking about our architecture educaction system.

(UN)Authorized Building Works Individual work

III, 32

(UN)Authorized Building Works Type: Individual work Architectural illustrator and theorist Hugh Ferriss used architectural diagrams to record the New York Zoning code Act’s impact on the architectural form. His interest is in finding the architectural envelope with the highest profit and the most reasonable shape under regulations. Ferriss regards Zoning code as a tool of production rather than a shackle of form. His work demonstrates the invisible development trend of architectural forms. Hugh Ferriss’ volume research defines a morphological research method: extreme certain rules of guidance and control to highlight the crucial parameters. Although the zoning code plays a positive role in the china’s rapid urbanization, it has been broadly criticized for lack of flexibility. With the end of the era of rapid urbanization, it is difficult for local governments in China to fully rely on land finance as in the past, so they have to find a breakthrough point in the transition from land developing to land service. I see this as an opportunity to break through the dominance of the zoning code by pursuing a new agenda. Enclosing the balcony is the only personal construction activity that the Chinese can carry out due to the Chinese land policy. However, in many cites, it is still regard as unauthorized building work. The fictional project is a transformational tool to reveal the zoning code’s limitation and contributes to discourse around urban development and urban utopia.

The planning index system represented by the detailed control plans is the primary tool for China's planning department to balance capital, the public and the government's interests. It based on the zoning code of the Soviet National Economic Plan in the 1950s. This is the result of incorporating urban space production into the planned economic model. The zoning code is a product of the planned economy era. Under the slogan of turning a consumer city into a production city, the commodity or capital attributes of construction land and the consumption attributes of buildings have been entirely abandoned. Over the past 40 years, the zoning code has played a crucial role in ensuring the rapid urbanization process in minimum construction standards. Moreover, the existing zoning code system can no longer fully satisfy the requirement of refined management in the transition from increment planning to inventory planning. When the rapid urbanization process comes to an end, the planners and the public will begin to look at the past from a rethinking perspective relationship between planning and urban morphology should also be investigated in a broad historical and technical dimension. a re la tia n e m h le l g m sid yste ro re in Ru te re nt us g lfa ys n ce s ne e i i co ho usin ts h w e an e l s h r s g a o g n u n tu h ic in ri Su ho uc g fi m nt sh n d rty ict no re str in oli tio pe on co owra ous str c o ab loca f E e r e L S H P In R al &

Slow Urbanization

Zoning code and the residential district in China In the 1950s, China learned the socialist micro-district and quantitative economic zoning code from the Soviet Union. The planning under complex urban conditions was regulated into standardized operations, which can minimize uncertainty. However, it has also been criticized for being inflexible that some scholars even believe that the 2 hour sunlight rule is one of China's culprits of urban planning problems.

A study on the Tendency to enclose balconies in China, finds that their main use is for laundry, planting and having pets, and storage. The causes of Beijingers reluctant use of the balcony are numerous: the outside environment is not pleasant enough to merit an exterior space; traditional living habits advocating privacy; and overcrowded apartments making it difficult not to utilize the balcony in some way.

The Retirement House Individual work 2021 Site: Hebei, China China’s rural development has been largely based on top-down industrial planning. Like in many places in the world this brought modernity to the countryside and offered dramatic improvements in the quality of life for many. It however also meant that historical, natural, and cultural quality concentrated in age old ways of living suffered. In 2020 the unprecedented anti-poverty campaigns in China that reshaped countrysides since the 1970s across the nation. This important milestone marks an important moment for reflection on this initial way of working not only for China: it demands new considerations on the future of the countryside. --Rem Koolhaas The retirement house” is based on a commission from an actual client who will retire from work planning to go back to his hometown, a small village in Hebei, China. This small project is based on the social situation and trying to figure out what is crucial for a farmer and respond to their life.

Chinese property law has existed in various forms for centuries. After the Chinese Communist Revolution in 1949, most lands is owned by collectivities or by the state. A land user obtains only the land use right, not the land or any resources in or below the ground. A land grant contract shall be entered into between the land user and the land administration department of the people’s government at the municipal or county level.

The modern Chinese lacked experience in private housing design for a long time partly due to the property law of PRC restriction on land ownership. And the architects are concentrating on urban development that the public lacks education on housing aesthetics.

Materials Materials for this house are based on a simple rule: be pragmatic. If you decide to use expensive material, you have to achieve some new experience. A big double glazed window on the ground floor is for the sunlight and accessibility to the exterior. In addition to this, other materials are cheap and durable in different weather, such as waterproof paint for the exterior wall finish and aluminium standing seam roof.

(a)Multiple Exposure Project Rethinking of a Professional work In professional practice, the complexity of the project is not only a process of design but also a balance between interests of the government, developers, and local design institutes. And it is one of the most important abilities for a professional architect. Over the course of my career, I have always found it worthwhile to review the progress of some “out of control” projects. The project of multiple exposure is carried out on this basic concept. During my professional work, there is such a special project. It has been repeatedly designed for four years on the same site and within same planning condition. In this long and repeated process, architect drifted with the waves on this turbulent sea like a boat in a storm.

Architecture is moving towards refinement, and innovation has been unable to change the fundamental power structure of the built environment. The so-called "methodology" in this refined theoretical structure is the endorsement of the entire power structure.

The Chinese property developer is the connector between governments and architects. Often, the communication skill of a property developer will dramatically determine the outcome of a project.

The government has never been able to trust and cooperate with architects and property developers. They stick to the supervisor's role and take no responsibility for the cityscape and building environment.

01:The Crown- Multi-Functional Complex Design Project in DU Architecture 2017.8 Uunder Constrction My work in this project: Project Leader The project is located in the southeast of Xi'an, Shaanxi, China, surrounded by many universities. Although the architectural design phase of the project has gone through several twists and turns, this project is finally under construction. XI’AN

Concept Development Located on the west side of Sakura City Park, the project is separated by a narrow street. As architects, our intuition made us realize that we should combine the site and parkland together to integrate the landscape system. We can obtain the largest inner courtyard through the full use of the boundary of the site. Furthermore, we adjust the roof height to improve the courtyard's sunlight condition and bring a batter scenery to the high area. This move makes the building highly recognizable in the city skyline. To improve the accessibility of the inner courtyard, we raised the bottom of the building to form an arch, which matched the curve of the roof and made the building open to the city.

Massing Study We have studied several massing models within this site, and many shapes have finally developed to a deep level. In this process, we continuously adjusted our value orientation and overthrew the original value identity.

48

The site is a 10000sqm area commercial site with a 5.0 Plot ratio and 100m height limitation. In order to meet students and university staff’s off-campus living or hotel needs, we proposed the concept of a “super hotel”, which is a multi-functional residential community with high flexibility of room reformation.

Vertical Living The era of moving to the suburbs is coming to an end. Instead, a growing movement of city dwellers are looking for grand architectural solutions in the smallest of spaces. Slender, slim, and tall structures are soaring in the limited land available, offering innovative solutions to a world with ever-growing urbanization. Vertical Living is an introduction to the architecture and interior masterminds using skillful, clever design to conquer compact living wherever there is space. As we continue to expect more of our flats and houses, unexpected approaches are necessary for the future of our urban spaces.

Bird view rendering of the Masterplan Being the total site area is 200,138.6 sqm, Plasma Studio was commissioned the design of a school complex (K12: Kindergarten + Primary + Secondary + High School) and of the University, with four Clusters of Faculties, Residential buildings, Services and Sport Areas. The project, that will be developed in three phases, will be completed in 2037 with the construction of 140,500 m2 Given the steep topography of the terrain and the intention to stitch together the new buildings with the landscape, the task was to develop the massing as an artificial, jagged replication of the original hillscapes. The essence of the landscape as “original” material is transformed and sculpted, becoming another self and forming an identity that is at once indexing the local geographic morphologies and specific latitude and environment and a projection of the logic of human rational thinking and spatial ordering. The educational bands of the K12 and of the University are organized along a Back Bone and on Podiums, which links diverse functions and produces new connections through social interactions. The social interaction is fostered by inserting semi public/ leisure activities within the academic environment, so as to create a common strata, where the knowledge is distributed through informal encounters among students.

03:ORCADT PLAZA APARTMENT RESIDENTIAL NEIGHBORHOOD, Xi’AN CITY, CHINA Project in DU Architecture 2018.8 Under Construction My work in this project: Team leader in full period, Communication with Client The project is located in Xi’an Qinhan new town, which is one of the Key development areas of Xi’an in the next ten years. It is a commercial area, and the area of the site is 50,000 sqm. The target building area is 300000 sqm, and the height limit is 60m. The site comprises two land pieces with 5A grade office buildings in the South and apartments and supporting commercial in the north. The plot ratio and density of the project land are relatively high. How to balance the natural conditions, landscape, and landmark are crucial to this project. We proposed the primary form with reasonable spacing and daylighting of the apartment based on function requirement. Through the volume transformation, a unitized residential area and four landscape courtyards were defined. In terms of public space, we were intended to use the concept from local histories and obtain the architectural form from traditional auspicious clouds patterns. The auspicious cloud pattern like organic graphics en large the public space at the corners and intersections, which providing richness experience to the walkways. At the same time, it also shapes the sky form of the landscaped atrium, which makes it elegant and recognizable.

O4:WEI YANG INTERNATIONAL PLAZA COMMERCIAL COMPLEX, APARTMENT, OFFICE, Xi’AN CITY, CHINA Project in DU Architecture 2017.2 Completion My work in this project: Architectural design ,Construction drawings, Team leader of Landscape The development of commercial real estate in China has experienced a period of barbaric pioneering in the past 15 years. In this process, the homogeneity of the project is very serious, and the developer pays more attention to speed and economic benefits than others. With the steady growth of people’s income, convenient and funny online shopping has essentially liberated people’s spare time. Facing the impact of the Internet economy on the real economy, what we see is not a crisis but an opportunity revival. In this context, new commercial real estate should avoid copying classic commercial types. They should adopt measures to local conditions that could provide a differentiated experience project for local. After analyzing the surrounding environment, we propose to abandon the classic indoor commercial street and create a three-dimensional courtyard-style outdoor retail space with an open environment. Use a variety of equipment and design methods to provide businesses with flexible and complete operating conditions, provide consumers with a pleasant consumption environment, and create urban living rooms. The spacious inner courtyard provides an ideal stage for various commercial promotion activities and performing arts activities, and the hidden fountain on the ground provides children’s activity space after summer. From the ground up, the terraces on each floor are stepped back to form an upward open terrace, which effectively expands the space experience of the courtyard and provides a beautiful outdoor business area for the catering shops on all floors. The three-dimensional greening allows people to enjoy it on all floors. Leisure time in the sun, tree shadows and wind. The open corridor-style streamline makes it possible for businesses to operate at all times.

OTHER WORKS I see rendering as a hobby more than a part of work. I quite enjoy simulating the real world’s light and color by CG artworks. Making a good render is the same as designing a building, we have to understand the space from various perspectives, such as material and texture, light and shadow. It’s all about the observation of this lovely world.
