Mooin Knock-down furniture

A knock-down bended tea table Individual Design Work Research and Brainstorming partner: Erika Wiberg Academic Advisor: Liu Lidan, from 7 April to 5 May, 2015

Easy to transport and to assemble are the principles of modern furniture. After a 3-day research and brainstorming in a knock-down furniture project, my partner and I found a very special way to deal with cheap panels according to the principles and developed an interesting concept. Then, after a long study process of materials and cutting technology by myself, this elegant tea table came up.

A PROJECT ABOUT INNOVATIVE KNOCK-DOWN FURNITURE

RESEARCH AND BRAINSTORMING ( TEAM WORK )

Our college had a cooperative project with Linköping university about knock-down furniture on April, 2014. The project’s output is a knock-down furniture with packaging ,which is related with the key words durability, innovation, efficiency and individuality, and I was lucky to start this project with a student from Linköping university. We did the research and brainstorming together and she also helped me sometimes during this project.

The research is about the main methods of making knock-down furnitures and interesting structures, which gives us inspirations to set our persona and scenario. According to these, we find our own design principles by brainstorming.

Decide the cutting technology and pattern

REFERENCES OF MATERIAL AND STRUCTURE After we decide our design principles, I try to find some interesting references to give me inspirations. Coincidently, I find a very interesting structure of bending woods and metals easily, so I test it a lot and make it suitable for CNC cutting.

Considering about mass producing, I think that CNC is the most suitable way to do this because it is accurate and easy for post processing. After this decision, I redesign the pattern and make it suitable for CNC cutting.

Decide the material : As I just want to use cheap and normal materials to do the superior design, I finally decide to use the plywood, which is cheap and has good performances.

Experiments of bending abilities : After some tests about CNC cutting, I’m sure that the pattern and material are good enough, so I use laser cutting, which is time-saving, to explore how patterns influence the bending abilities. CONCEPT DEVELOPING

CONCEPT CONFIRMED

After some experiments, I finally confirm my main design method, which uses the pattern and processing method in my experiments, and continue my concepts according to the previous persona and scenario.

After confirming the concept, I give it a name, “木 隐”, which is from the wood material “木” as well as a Chinese phrase“隐隐约约”, conveying the everlasting pursuit for subtle and reserved nature in traditional Chinese aesthetics. “木 隐”, conforming to the “simple but not easy” way of design, consists of four pliable pieces of wood boards on the top, bottom and sides. It has elegant and refined appearance, maximized storage, and light parts to be easily assembled, disassembled and transported.

MODEL MAKING

During my concept process, I try my best to think about how to combine the function and form, how to make it easy to be transported and assembled and how to make people enjoy the better design with lower price.

After confirming my concept, I do my model in the next two weeks. Because I have done a lot of material tests, the model process is smooth and I make some small adjustments to let it better according to the actual situation.

KEY RESEARCH PROCESS AND MAIN CONCLUSION WHAT DO STUDENTS LIKE OR CONCERN?

FOUR MAIN RESEARCH METHODS

In order to quickly get clues of this general questions, I try to use my own advantages as a student and directly start my research aiming at students’ information resources and personal life in my university, Tongji University. Nowadays, mobile APPS and subscriptions are the main information sources of young generation. And almost all the students live in dormitory of universities. Therefore, I think they are the most effective research directions to answer my questions.

Helmet Course design work

A fashionable helmet Individual Design Work Design for young people in Urban cycling Academic Advisor: Liu Lidan, from 3 March to 3 April, 2015

With the rise of eco-friendly awareness, more and more young people in Shanghai begin to choose bicycles as their daily transportation. However, the essential bicycle helmets seem not prevalent in China at the same time. Therefore, in this project, I ask people who like to ride bikes and try to find what young people really need. Then, according to the real problems and needs, I start my design.

29

RESEARCH PROCESS

Why no helmet

The young people in city have diverse dressing styles. And for the people who also use bicycles as their trip mode, they need suitable dressing styles. Although there are lots of matchable clothes can be chosen, there are not many helmets which are functional or suitable for urban cycling at the same time. Therefore, in this project, I ask people who like to ride bikes and try to find what young people really need.

A powerful and professional helmet?

NO!!! A protective and stylish accessory!!! What they say “When I was in Germany, I bought myself a helmet. But when I wore it in Shanghai, people on the street staring at me made me feel weird and stupid, so I gave it up.” - Hannah, Female, 26, exchange student “I’m not a professional rider and seldom cycle at very high speed, so those helmets on the market are not suitable for me. I’d rather wear a hat which fits my clothes.” -Liu Jia, Male, 21, University student “I like to ride in Shanghai very much, especially at night, because of the cityscape and riding feelings. However, once while I was riding, I suddenly fell down. My helmet saved my life at that time, I think.” -Zhou Fang, Male, 23 University student

THE THINKING ABOUT UTILITY

REFERENCES AND SKETCHES

I continue to explore the needs and problems of my targets, young people, after deciding design directions. By collecting details from people’s experiences and my observations, I make my helmet design more utility.

Getting references form various aspects, such as clothes style, helmet in market, rough models for segmentation tests and so on, I use sketches to explore the most suitable appearance of my helmet.

Depending on the sketches and rough module, I can make my digital model by Rhino and render it in order to check the details and think over about the structures and materials.

After digital modelling, I make clearly about all the details of my design and think over about how to make a model. In order to make the model close to my design, I use the laser cutting and 3D printing technologies to assist my model making process.

Fragments Parametric design for 3D printing

A concept design of sunglasses for 3D-print technology A project in Shine Shanghai—Fiction Concept maker : Yang Wenqing, from July to August, 2014 My work : sketch, Parametric design, Rendering, 3D pringting

I have studied parametric design for one year on my own. In my opinion, it is the method that can connect logic with real functions. So in this project, although the concept is in the philosophical level, I try to relate it with people’s actual requirements and use the distance parameter to control the variables in order to make the appearance reach my expectation.

39

THE CONCEPT OF FRAGMENTS FRAGMENTS is named by the way of looking, aiming at discuss the questions about how people acknowledge things and their rules. Normal people don’t know that they use the fragmented way to observe the world, and the truth is the results and recreations of their consciousness. Therefore, the FRAGMENTS gives people fragmented using experiences by using parametric design, in order to make people think about their consciousness.

I make all three digital models but just print out the red one

Round hole Multilevel superposition

THE LOGIC OF SUNGLASSES This concept design also has some considerations about practicabilities. When people using sunglasses, the main eyesight is just from the center part of sunglasses. And the most of the sunlight goes into the eyes from the top part of sunglasses. Therefore, the logic of the holes sizes is related with the distances form hole center to the center part and top of the sunglasses. Round triangle Multilevel superposition

ONE DESIGN PROCESS OF PARAMETERIZING From sketches to 3D-print products, parametric design plays a role as a bridge between logic and modeling. I need to be clear on logic first, and then I use parametric tool ( grasshopper ) to make a universal digital model. Finally, adjust it to get what I want.

Alarm Pillar Design for the security system in service

An alarm pillar design for campus security system A project of Tongji University Security Department Aderviser : Fan Zhong, from January to March, 2014 My work: Appearance, Control panel, Small research

It’s really lucky that I can have a chance to join a project that can be really produced and serves the people around me. Due to the limitation of actual production, such as standard size, the color of painting and clients’ demands, I can just do the appearance and control panel design based on my research. However, it helps me to know how a practical project goes.

45

THE SITUATION OF TONGJI CAMPUS AND ITS PROBLEMS

THE LIMITATIONS OF PRODUCTION AND MY DESIGNS

There are more than 40000 people study and work in Tongji University ,which is free for everyone to come and leave in 24 hours. Therefore, the campus is very busy in daytime and not completely safe at night. There are always some emergencies happening on the main road but can’t be informed to the Tongji University Security Department in time. About 2 years ago, a young female student was raped on the road to her dormitory at 11 o’clock, which became a blasting fuse to this project.

1040mm

The questions 1.The road is not totally safe at night. 2.The main road is crowded and it is easy to happen incidents during the daytime. 3.No ways to connect with Tongji University Security Department in the campus immediately when emergencies happen.

The size and color of fonts are chosen carefully

Therefore, after we realize the problems of the guard system in our campus, we find that we can build a security system, in which the alarm pillars connect with the manual service, to improve those situations.

The solutions

Alarm pillar

Manual service

1.Enough alarm pillars can cover all the main roads in the campus. 2.The alarm pillars should be easily found and easy to be produced. 3.The alarm pillars cover functions of consultation and seeking help.

My design for the alarm pillar

47

2600mm

The needs The body is made of brushed stainless steel. Because I have to use profiles, the diameter of cylinder must be 220 mm.

Choosing the color of painting is depended on the most of the buildings, pavements and plants in the campus. ( The most roads and buildings are grey and the plants are always dark green. So I think dark blue is the most suitable color with good identification degrees for these surroundings. )

THE FONTS EXPERIMENT I printed out the fonts with different sizes and colors, and test them in different backgrounds by asking other people to recognize them. Finally, I chose these two colors in different backgrounds and 11 cm high for the Chinese characters.

THE CONTROL PANEL DESIGN The consolation button just works in daytime and connects to the manual service. Speaker The helping button works in 24 hours. After pushing the button, the alarm bell will ring and it connects to the emergency service directly. Camera

Censer The improvement of process

A series of censer designs Technical guidance : Hu Weihua As main participator of project, from September, 2014 to now Use 3D-print technology to optimize the process of censer foundry

I offer to collaborate with the technician, Hu Weihua, after knowing the process of colored glaze foundry from her. She is really good at a special foundry technology of colored glaze and I’m familiar with 3D printing, which can optimize the process of colored glaze foundry. So, after our study of transitional Chinese vessels, we start this project and I’m the main designer and technicist for 3D printing.

51

DEFINE A BRIEF

MY THINKING ABOUT APPLYING 3D-PRINT TECHNOLOGY

We decide to use the special foundry technology of colored glaze to make something so that we start this project. At the beginning, we don’t know what to do, so we start to define this project from a study of traditional vessels.

After our study, we find that the appearances of censers used for relaxing becomes simple and elegant nowadays. Therefore, I’m thinking about the advantages of using the 3D-print technology to replace the process of pulling an embryo. Traditional schedule for glass foundry

The special foundry technology of colored glaze, which means adding some special colored powder fused with glass during the glass foundry process. This particular technology of glass foundry gives brand-new textures to glass.

Our study starts from the origin of censer, 幹炉, which was used in Western Han Dynasty for royal ceremonies. From then on, the censer became more and more prevalent in civilians.

Therefore, after study of most Chinese traditional vessels, we decide to design censers because they are still used in daily life and religious sacrifices nowadays.

Now, the censer is mainly used in relaxing or Buddhism. The censer is monotonous and stately for Buddhism

Nowadays, the censers become simple and elegant, so pulling an embryo becomes meaningless. Therefore, using digitized design process to replace meaningless process frees designers and makes it possible that the traditional glass-foundry art can become manufactured things.

DIGITIZED DESIGN PROCESS WITH 3D PRINTING

MANUFACTURING PROCESS

I persuade Hu to use 3D-print technology to optimize the whole process, which can both change my design work and the turnover formwork. After some experiments, I create a digitized design process from drawing to 3D printing. Now, we have more than 40 designs of censers depending on this process and it still works.

After we decide designs and print them out, we directly go to the foundry process. We use 3D-printing censers as original molds and choose silastic to get their shapes so that we can preserve the original molds. Although most of works are finished by the factory, I do them by myself at the first time and the process of mixing different colors has to be done by ourselves. cast vax

Reference about shape of traditional censers We want to design simple and elegant censers which are in accord with people's aesthetic expectations nowadays. However, we can’t abandon traditional things to design censers out of thin air. So, I make a reference of latter-day and ancient censers. And then, I use the concise design language to design my own censers.

I plan, arrange, design, layout this portfolio individually, which includes all the main suitable projects from 2014 to 2015 for my application. Therefore, this portfolio can matter-of-factly illustrate my experiences and design abilities. In this final page, I’m willing to show my appreciations for all the persons who helped me. All the projects I did received a lot of help from my professors, teachers and friends. Without them, I can’t improve myself and accomplish those projects with such completeness.
