How to Make Sure Everyone Has a Voice in Your Meetings

Page 1

Employees can have mixed feelings about administrative meetings. While some find them informative and necessary in most cases, others find them to be a huge waste of time. There are many reasons that employees have mixed feelings, most can be tracked back to their basic personality types. Extroverts will generally enjoy the opportunity for an audience that the administrative meeting offers. Conversely, more introverted individuals may feel that group meetings are a waste of their time because they don't feel they have the opportunity to participate. Effective leaders build confidence and cooperation when they bring their group together and allow all members to offer opinions or ideas. When individuals realize that they are not alone in a situation and someone of authority takes the time to address issues in a group setting it has a tendency to bring the group together around a common cause. Brainstorming and bouncing ideas around in a moderately sized group of people can lead to innovative solutions and processes merely by the mingling of so many different perspectives and areas of expertise. Make sure to listen to everyone in the group. Sometimes more introverted group members may need a little coaxing to participate, but don't sell them short, they've been sitting there soaking in all that information. Create an opportunity for them to share. Sometimes more extroverted group members need to take a step back and allow others to participate. To be effective as a leader you need to understand the personalities of the group members and orchestrate accordingly. Dr. Sarah E. White Illuminating Bliss Sarah E. White, PhD
