local beach secrets It’s no secret that the Shoalhaven has some of the best beaches in the world. White sands and sparkling waters framed by rugged coastal cliffs and stunning bushland. There’s a beach here to suit everyone’s needs – from families to surfers to walkers and romantics! We even have dogfriendly beaches too!

The best family beaches have amenities, are patrolled and have surf conditions that are ideal for both swimming and body boarding. Shelter is always a plus and if there are cafes and food stores close by, it makes for a great day out. The Shoalhaven has a number of beaches that are perfect for families – in Jervis Bay there are Callala Bay and Callala Beach as well as Greenfields Beach in the southern section of Jervis Bay National Park (great picnic area for your BYO lunch). Mollymook Beach is another gem, with perfect swimming spots in the Narrawallee Inlet and the Bogey Hole.

Dogs love the beach just as much as we do and there are a number of beaches in the Shoalhaven where you can bring your furry friend for a great day out. Some beaches have time restrictions, so make sure to check with local signage before hitting the sand. Shoalhaven Heads Beach features a 24-hour off-leash exercise area located 200 metres north of the surf club house to access track; Callala Beach has a dogfriendly zone from Parkes Crescent to Callala Creek, while at Huskisson Beach you can take your four-legged friend to the corner of Nowra Street right through to Tapalla Avenue. Lake Conjola Beach is dog friendly south of the boardwalk. For a copy of our handy Pets On Holiday guide go to shoalhaven.com.au ROMANTIC BEACHES

SURF BEACHES Of course we have the best surf breaks here in the Shoalhaven. Warrain Beach at Culburra has great surf on the northern reefs and Mollymook Beach, which has patrols towards the southern end and a popular surf break known as the reef towards the middle. If you are experienced and don’t mind a lack of patrols, try Comerong Island, Windy Gully at Currarong, Aussie Pipe at Summercloud Bay in Booderee National Park and Dum-Dums at Lake Tabourie. PLAY Surf break at Bawley Point

our fave surf spots The Shoalhaven region has some of Australia’s best surfing spots to suit all styles and abilities. The local surf culture is fun and relaxed. There are plenty of waves to be caught all year round and often a surfer can have the water all to themselves if they don’t mind sharing with a playful pod of dolphins.

AUSSIE PIPE (BLACK ROCK)

MOLLYMOOK REEF

RENNIES

Aussie Pipe is a famous reef break featured on the film ‘Storm Surfers’ with surfing legends Tom Carroll and Ross Clarke-Jones as well as local legend Paul Morgan. Named after famous Hawaiian surf spot ‘Pipeline’, ‘Aussie Pipe’ rarely breaks and when it does it is for experienced surfers. Access to Aussie Pipe is through Booderee National Park and the local community there are quite protective of the spot, so it is recommended to go with a local. Watch the film for great footage of the break.

Mollymook reef is a popular surf spot located around the middle of Mollymook Beach. It can be accessed from the parking spots located half way up Mitchell Parade in Mollymook. Mollymook Beach often has other good breaks based on current sand banks.

Rennies Beach in Ulladulla has public parking and is a popular spot in smaller swell. It can be accessed from the car park on Rennies Beach Cl. It is a beach break which often has good sandbanks and is known for being good in a large range of conditions. It’s best in east to south swell and west to northeast winds.

GREEN ISLAND Green Island is an advanced surf spot which can be accessed from Conjola main beach or south of Manyana at Cunjurong Point. The easiest access is from the carpark at the end of Ottawa St, Cunjurong Point, which also has a lookout so you can check what’s happening. The reef break on the south side of the island is a long lefthander popular with longboarders. It is best on a mid-size south swell and north-west to north-east winds. BENDALONG BACK BEACH Bendalong back beach is a beach break with quality sand banks that is known as a ‘swell magnet’. The carpark and lookout can be accessed at the end of Bendalong Rd on the right hand side and it is best in east to south east swell and north-west to northeast winds.

10 | Shoalhaven Visitors Guide 2016

GOLFY Affectionately known as ‘Golfy’, the Golf Course Reef break can be accessed via Golf Ave and turn onto Riversdale Ave which goes through the middle of Mollymook golf course (watch out for golf balls!). The Akwa Surf ‘nocturnal surf comp’ was held there in 2015. COLLERS BEACH Collers Beach backs almost completely on to the golf course however the southern reef can be accessed from Shipton Cres, Mollymook, or a longer walk from the Golfy car park. The southern reef of Collers Beach is what is referred to as Collers. ULLADULLA BOMMIE Ulladulla Bommie breaks less often and is recommended for experienced surfers only as it breaks over shallow rocks and reef and can be heavy in large swell. It is a long, fast, right handed reef break. It can be accessed from a small car park off of Deering St, Ulladulla, before you get to the lighthouse. It is at its best in bigger south swells and north-west to north-east winds.

RACECOURSE BEACH Racecourse Beach is located just south of Rennies Beach and gets nice waves up the north end which can be viewed from the car park off of South Pacific Cres, Ulladulla. DOLPHIN POINT Dolphin Point is a reef break recommended for advanced surfers as it can get quite heavy in bigger swells. It can be accessed from a car park on Seaside Pde, Dolphin Point, which also has a viewing platform for checking the surf before making the walk down. It has a left and right reef break and is best in a southerly swell, southwest or west winds. BAWLEY POINT Bawley Point is a coastal village south of Ulladulla. It has a few reef breaks popular with locals, especially body boarders, which can be accessed easily from the town’s three headlands. Bawley Point can be accessed via Bawley Point Rd which joins on to the Princes Hwy.

immerse yourself with water activities Pam Burridge, world Champion surfer, says she doesn’t need to travel for good surf.

Pam Burridge, a world champion surfer who travelled the professional circuit for 20 years, moved from Manly to the Shoalhaven area, partly to take advantage of its fabulous, uncrowded surf. She now operates a surf and paddle boarding school out of Bendalong and Mollymook. “I haven’t really travelled since I moved down here. That illustrates to me that this area is world-class. Most people want to go overseas to surf. I go to our beaches and think, ‘This is good! Why do I need to go anywhere? We’re very blessed,” says Pam.

12 | Shoalhaven Visitors Guide 2016

There are beaches with waves to suit all surfing abilities. Cave Beach in Booderee National Park, South Narrawallee and Mollymook are great for beginners. Pam adds: “Washerwomans Beach at Bendalong is a really good learn-tosurf beach. When the tide comes in, it’s only waist-high. There are usually no deep rips and it’s pretty safe. Pebbly Beach [in Murramarang National Park] can be good for beginners and also offers a more advanced wave. So it’s quite varied. It depends on the prevailing wind and swell conditions. There are usually kangaroos down to the shoreline. If you’re into more remote surfing, it’s really worth a look.” Pam won’t reveal the best breaks for advanced surfers. But some of the more publicly known spots include Inyadda Beach at Bendalong. “It’s a swell magnet type of break. It can be quite sizeable when other places are dead-flat. There are some empty beaches at Conjola for more advanced surfers. They’re a bit dangerous because there are deeper rips and it’s more

exposed. There are a lot of reefs in and around the Ulladulla area. Golf Course Reef is popular with long boarders, but it can also hold a swell of up to about 10 feet.” Pam’s surf school, along with many other businesses, teaches paddle boarding. Huskisson, Hyams Beach, Swan Lake, St Georges Basin and Batemans Bay are great paddling locations. “Narrawallee Inlet is a really lovely little waterway to paddle on. And once you get more proficient, it offers an opportunity at high tide to catch some waves and develop wave riding skills,” says Pam. If you’re into sea kayaking, you can’t go past Jervis Bay. There are opportunities for lessons or kayak hire, and while paddling through the clear water, it’s not uncommon for dolphins to join you, or to see whales during May to November. Marco Verdugo, a certified International Kitesurfing Organisation Instructor based at Collingwood Beach in Jervis Bay, reveals some of the best kiting spots in the Shoalhaven. “The most consistent spot in the summer months is Moona Moona Creek near Huskisson. It’s a safe beach and a great place to learn. Seven Mile Beach is good during trade winds and makes great down-wind sessions. During winter and southerly winds, the sport becomes a little more extreme as the winds pack more of a punch. They tend to be gustier and are only for more experienced riders with very good ocean skills.” Marco has kitesurfed in countries all over the world. He says: “Of all the places I have been to, I can say that there is no place like home. There are consistent winds, clean beaches, a friendly vibe, and it’s not too crowded. We have it all.” Pam agrees. “The coast is so diverse, with little bays and headlands. There are over a hundred beaches in this area. So with all those different angles and winds, there are opportunities to seek out world-class waves or more isolated waves. With a little bit of research and a little bit of timing you can get yourself a beautiful wave. You don’t have to travel to exotic locations; you can get it right here.” Shoalhaven Visitors Guide 2016 | 13

insiders tips must do walks Whether you’re a serious walker heading into the wilderness or a family enticing the kids away from their screens, you’ll find your perfect walking track in the spectacular Shoalhaven landscape. The best way to really immerse yourself in the Shoalhaven’s beautiful landscapes is through the region’s guided walks, and there are plenty to choose from. The famous White Sands Walk should be first on the list, giving great views of the whitest sand beach in the world. One of the other must-do’s is the wreck walk in Currarong. Not only does it showcase some beautiful ocean scenery with an optional stop off at the rock pool to cool off, it also highlights some local history including the location of two separate ship wrecks, the S.S. Plutus which crashed there in 1882 and the S.S. Merimbula which came aground near Whale Point in 1928.

The 3.5hr walk is a great adventure featuring a steep climb and ladders for that final push to the top, for views that are unparalleled. To see some local wildlife the Pretty Beach to Snapper Point walk is great for whale watching from May to November, and is also popular with bird watchers as it’s known as one of the best spots to see some of our native species. Bangalee Reserve in North Nowra is also a great place for a quiet walk through the forest and if you’re lucky you might spot a Lyrebird or two. get your ‘wild on’ at Shoalhaven zoo It’s been over 40 years since this local landmark, situated on the banks of the Shoalhaven River, first opened its doors to the public. It has come a long way from humble beginnings to grow into the largest zoo on the NSW South Coast. Currently, the zoo is home to over 100 species of animals, birds and reptiles – including both native and exotic. A name change from Nowra Wildlife Park to Shoalhaven Zoo in 2011 indicates just how far the animal sanctuary has developed over the years. The exotic animals are indeed a huge drawcard, which makes this zoo so unique. Albino water buffalo, macaws, exotic tortoises and Burmese pythons cohabit alongside saltwater crocodiles, monkeys, camels, kangaroos, koalas, iguanas and more. There are also plans underway to bring white African lions into the mix in the near future. The daily animal shows are great fun for all ages – marmoset monkey feedings, mixed animals and furry friends shows, cuddly koala and dingo feeding as well as the ever-popular crocodile feeding. You’ll be fascinated as you watch John – the zoo’s largest crocodile – being fed by the well-trained keepers. If you are looking for the extraordinary, there are three exciting animal experiences to enjoy – Monkey Madness, where you can hand feed the marmoset monkeys; the Ultimate Keeper Experience, where you can become a keeper for the afternoon, walking through the zoo and feeding a range of animals, large and small; as well as the Wild Paws Trek, where you can enter the dingo den, leash a dingo and explore the hanging rock walk together. The Zoo Haven Cafe enjoys stunning views over the Shoalhaven River. The deck is a magnificent spot to relax, catch your breath and enjoy a bite to eat. The cafe is open to the general public during the day even if you are not visiting the zoo.

Over the past 25 years, the Shoalhaven has become a world-class rock-climbing region, popular for sport climbing, which involves the use of anchors and bolts attached to the rock for protection. Justine Powell, who has been climbing in the region for 20 years explains that the Shoalhaven is the ideal rock-climbing destination because of the number and quality of sport climbing routes.

Shoalhaven climbing caters for every grade of climber. There are routes for the beginner as well as more challenging routes for experienced climbers, with the spectacular Shoalhaven scenery providing a magnificent backdrop. The routes have all been designed and constructed by experienced climbers within the field such as Rod Young, who has designed hundreds of routes and compiled a guidebook on the climbs available in the area. Rod explains that the Shoalhaven offers clean, hard sandstone that is ideal for climbing. He says the quality of the rock, the diversity of the routes and the beautiful scenery draws climbers not only from the Illawarra, Sydney and Canberra but also interstate and overseas.

Geographically, it stretches for around 102 square kilometres and is comprised of a number of picturesque coastal towns. The Jervis Bay region is home to the following three incredible National Parks. BOODEREE NATIONAL PARK This area boasts soaring sea cliffs, which are the highest in NSW, with Steamers Head the highest at 130 metres. dining - we’ve come a long way baby! The Shoalhaven dining scene has really come of age, not only in the number of new restaurants and cafes opening, but in their diversity, menus, taste and service. Oh, we’ve come a long way baby. Berry has long been recognised as a food hub and is well worth a visit (or two!). For dinner you can’t go past South on Albany with its French bistro-style menu and warm friendly service; or for an intimate fine-dining experience, the Asian-inspired Hungry Duck; or LEAF in Berry for its unique Thai-Vietnamese home-made dishes. If you are after a relaxed lunch or breakfast, the coolest cafe in town is The Burrows, also said to have the best coffee in town. Or there’s the Berry Sourdough Café, so popular it’s become an institution. Not far from town, Silo’s Restaurant offers unique Australian-inspired dishes, or indulge in a casual lunch at Broughton on the Ridge, a wonderfully peaceful, rural location.

If you get the chance to visit Kangaroo Valley, or even stay there, you will be pleasantly surprised by its hidden array of wonderful cafes and restaurants. Bistro One24, Jing Jo and Café Bella are all favourites in the area. Whichever you choose, you won’t be disappointed. While you are in the Valley, be sure to call into the Kangaroo Valley Fudge House and Ice Creamery for coffee, home-made fudge, ice creams and a range of local produce. Plan your travels to include a stop at The Lookout Cambewarra Mountain. It’s not just a lookout with exceptional views, it is also a cafe that the locals love. Try and combine the Friday night Tapas with a summer sunset for a really exceptional experience.

INDULGE If you consider yourself a bit of a foodie, you will love Milton for its vegetarian delights, late-night tapas bar and cafes galore. In Nowra, both Berry and Kinghorne Streets offer a string of modern cafes and casual coffee spots, with some offering courtyard or streetside dining. Nowra presents some real surprises – there’s delicious Thai, authentic Indian, and even Sushi, all seriously good. If you are after views of the mighty Shoalhaven River, you won’t be disappointed. On one side of the Nowra Bridge you will find perfectly cooked fish and chips. And on the other, there is fine dining at Wharf Rd Restaurant and Bar. It may be a small sleepy town, but in Greenwell Point you are spoilt for choice when it comes to seafood. Enjoy take-away fish and chips on the point, perhaps while having a cast yourself. Or dine in at Pelican Rocks, a seafood restaurant, where the platters are both succulent and generous. Huskisson, on the beautiful waters of Jervis Bay, has become a cosmopolitan hub. With lots of cafes to choose from, many with views, there are plenty of exciting and satisfying breakfast and lunch options. Supply, Jervis Bay Kiosk, Main Deck and 5 Little Pigs are the stand-outs – all with loyal followings.

For dinner you are in for something special with young local chef Sherrie Tripp coming home to treat your taste buds at The Waterhouse, offering relaxed French bistro style dining and a bar menu from 4pm. Wild Ginger offers beautifully presented contemporary Thai-inspired food, and Pilgrims – a Saturday night Mexican feast. For something really different, a few kilometres out of town, The Gunyah Restaurant offers a divine fine-dining experience in an intimate bush setting. Heading down to Mollymook, with its stunning beaches, there are so many wonderful dining options you could spend the entire weekend just in this area. You can’t go past the beachfront cafes for breakfast or a casual lunch, the Beach Hut and Breakers being loved by pretty much everyone who goes there. For more of a fine-dining experience, Tallwood delivers perfectly balanced flavours with a focus on share plates, while Rick Stein at Bannisters puts on a glorious seafood experience.

Ulladulla’s best cafes are a mix of quirky, healthy and real – try The Treehouse for coffee, home-style food, and special dinner nights; Native for its vital menu and expansive views; or the Mango Tree Cafe for an authentic and friendly Indian lunch or dinner. Cupitt’s Kitchen is perfect for a long lunch or a relaxed dinner with delightfully cooked slow food and sophisticated dining, in a tranquil rural winery atmosphere. If you consider yourself a bit of a foodie, you will love Milton, for its vegetarian delights, late-night tapas bar and cafes galore. Mrs Top at Milton is fine food, boutique and homely; Milk Haus, a scrumptious from-scratch, produce-growing, wholefood canteen-style cafe; and the exceptional St Isidore with its produce-to-plate, fresh, local, seasonal philosophy and talented modern, contemporary dishes. Described simply as amazing, it’s on the farm, relaxed and rural. Oh yes! Dining in the Shoalhaven has never been so good.

food lovers delights It’s an exciting time for food in the Shoalhaven. More produce-to-table eateries are making their mark, and top-quality international chefs are choosing to set up shop within this magnificent region.

Food tours are a great place to start. Foodscape Tours operates a few set tours, or if you have a group, you can book and design your own.

Opposite page: Berry Sourdough Café Above clockwise L-R: Fresh local produce; Dining at Silos Estate; The Treat Factory, Berry; Fresh Shoalhaven oysters

Farmers markets are always popular. Try the Gaia Farmers Market, which runs Thursday afternoons in Ulladulla, the Shoalhaven Heads Seafood and Produce Market, every Saturday morning at the Heads Hotel, or the Kangaroo Valley Farmers Market, also at the pub, on the second Sunday morning of the month. It is also worth going along to the Berry Country Fair as well, on the first Sunday of the month, as all the local producers come along, depending on seasonality of course. While in Berry, check out some of its foodie treats such as South Coast Providores, who cook up French provincial style, smallbatch, local seasonal goodies; Nourish Kitchen + Lifestyle for everything wonderful for the pantry, cooking and prep. The Treat Factory and Pompadour’s Chocolates both hand make goodies on site; The Berry Tea Shop blends its own teas; and Il Locale Gelato, as the name implies, stocks lots of local offerings. There are plenty of vineyards and wineries to visit along the way but, if you drop into Silo’s Estate in Jaspers Brush, you’ll find a fridge full of locally made cheese including Cow Corp, Unicorn, South Coast Cheese and Sophie’s All Natural Cheese from Jervis Bay. It’s good to be in the know!

26 | Shoalhaven Visitors Guide 2016

Welcome to the Shoalhaven, vintage 2016, where eating good, wholesome, real food is taking on meaning like never before. There is no shortage of tasty, funky, distinctive and love-inspired offerings for you to indulge.

In Nowra you’ll find Australia’s best coffee. Yes seriously. Hyper Hyper coffee is a pit stop not to be missed. They roast their own coffee on site in true northern Italian espresso style. Head to Greenwell Point for the freshest, just opened, Sydney Rock oysters you will ever taste. And, on the way, keep an eye out for fresh eggs, fruit, and vegies at farm gates. As you head south to Milton, stop off at The Olive Farm at Falls Creek for locally made olive oil, freshly grown produce and more. Next stop is Martins Orchard. They have a little shop out the front in stone fruit season, with fresh peaches, nectarines and plums. Once in Milton, the treats begin again. Merry Maiden Veggies is a must-stop for beautifully fresh produce grown in its own market garden; The Kitchen for its fresh curries and other take-home meals, not to mention its mouth-watering, moist home-made cakes; Flour Water Salt, not only for its sourdough bread but its fantastic deli range; and not far away in Ulladulla is Lucky’s Seafood, for good fresh, local fish and seafood. The Shoalhaven really is a food lovers’ delight! Shoalhaven Visitors Guide 2016 | 27

EXPLORE

country villages It helps to have some insider knowledge about a destination before you visit. Here, three Shoalhaven locals share what they like best about their hometowns.

If shopping and quaint cafes are up your alley, take a day to discover the small historic towns and discover our hidden secrets.

BERRY “Berry’s green and lush, with a strong sense of community and an old-world charm. There’s a lot of history, with buildings from the early settlers. It’s really quaint,” says Penny Craig, a remedial massage therapist who grew up in Berry. This tree-lined, relaxed village, popular with tourists, is set in dairy country at the base of a cliff-lined mountain escarpment. It has a great selection of quality restaurants, cafes, bakeries, homewares stores, fashion boutiques and pubs. “I love the natural attractions around Berry,” says Penny. “Up in the mountains there’s subtropical rainforest with secret waterholes perfect for exploring.” Bundewallah Walking Track, accessed near the end of Bundewallah Road, is one of her

must-dos. “It’s a steep walk with steps a lot of the way. Then you walk down this amazing leaf-littered track to a gorgeous little waterfall. It is spectacular.” Penny also recommends wandering along a country lane and visiting Cambewarra Lookout. “Ten minutes drive the other side of Berry, there’s the beach, and the river at Shoalhaven Heads with shade along the riverbank. It’s really safe for kids because, in parts, it’s shallow up to their knees before it drops off deep,” says Penny. She adds: “Broughton Creek, which runs through part of Berry, has long reeds and pretty dragonflies. It’s absolutely stunning to paddle along.”

KANGAROO VALLEY

MILTON

“Kangaroo Valley is kind of artsy, but grounded by its strong farming community. It’s a place you visit when you just need to exhale and reconnect. It’s quiet, but not boring. You really feel like you’ve escaped the everyday,” says Fiona Cutroni, a local pie maker.

The village of Milton, established in 1860, sits on a hilltop ridge among green farmland. Milton township is listed with the National Trust, and many historical buildings and houses line its streets. At the northern end of town, the stark-white St Mary’s Star of the Sea Catholic Church welcomes southbound visitors. To the west of Milton is the Budawang Range and Morton National Park. From here you can walk to the summit of Pigeon House Mountain (Dithol), or take the two-day hike to The Castle. Beautiful sandy beaches are just a few minutes’ drive to the east of town.

Kangaroo Valley, nestled between the sandstone cliff escarpments of Cambewarra and Barrengarry Mountains, is a natural habitat for kangaroos, wombats, wallabies and platypuses. It houses shops, galleries, cafes, and the historic Hampden Bridge – Australia’s oldest surviving suspension bridge. “The river is a major drawcard; you can always find a quiet spot for yourself. You can kick back and see so much wildlife, and the sky is amazing at night. On steamy summer nights when there’s a storm coming over, there’s nothing like it,” says Fiona. “The kids love the dirt mounds and BMX track on the side of the road near the turn off to Bendeela. It’s awesome if you’ve got a remote-control car. And there’s also Pioneer Museum Park. My favourite thing to do is drive around farmland, particularly along Upper Kangaroo River Road.” A hidden local gem is FIG – the Friendly Inn Garden. “It’s a community garden hidden behind the pub,” says Fiona. “They have a stand at the farmers markets, held on the second Sunday of the month.” There are roughly 24 walks around the area, including trails at Fitzroy Falls in Morton National Park, where you will see waterfalls, lyrebirds, rocky cliffs and deep, tree-covered gorges.

Milton has many high-quality fashion boutiques, art galleries, home wares stores, restaurants, alfresco cafes, and antique shops. It is a creative town, known for its population of artisans and musicians. Siobhan O’Brien, director and designer at a local boutique says: “Milton has a wonderful eclectic vibe. It features a melting pot of entrepreneurs, professionals and creatives who add to the town in equal measure. Milton has really come of age, particularly over the last five years. It is no longer a sleepy seaside hamlet. It’s a savvy, hip and happening town. “When I am with my children, I take them to Mick Ryan Park for a play under the enormous and extremely old Morton Bay fig,” says Siobhan. She also recommends visiting Narrawallee Inlet, the perfect spot for kids, as it is very protected and not too deep.
