acknowledgement of country

welcome We would like to acknowledge and value Aboriginal people and their long rich cultural and spiritual connections to the Shoalhaven area. This is evident in the stories and ceremonies, natural landmarks and the sacred objects embedded in the landscapes, waterways throughout this region today. As you journey through the Shoalhaven absorb the beauty of the land, its magnificent landscapes, spectacular waterways and abundance of native flora and fauna. Travel thoughtfully and respectfully remembering the footsteps of the ancestors who walked this land before you and those who will follow.

Natural landmarks like Cullunghutti Mountain (image above), Moyean Hill (north of Cullunghutti Mountain) and Dithol/Didthul (Pigeon House Mountain), hold significant cultural meaning to Aboriginal people of the Shoalhaven.

world famous Jervis Bay The sand is white, the water is crystal clear and the living is easy – Jervis Bay is a jewel of the Shoalhaven.

STAY A WHILE See the bay from a cruise departing Huskisson or engage in one of many watersports, with numerous operators who can take you on a lesson or hire your equipment. Perhaps just pack a picnic and wash your cares away with a dip in the pristine water where the bush meets the beach and the fine white sands squeak.

WHITE SAND BEACHES You may have heard of Hyams Beach, famous for its white sand, but if you want to be a trailblazer then fill your Instagram with selfies from one of the neighbouring and equally beautiful white sand beaches. If Hyams is on your bucket list, then we recommend you park at Greenfield and stroll the gorgeous White Sands Walk via Chinamans. You may even find that Greenfield is the place to stay, being voted in the top 12 beaches of the world by The Guardian (2016), with great facilities such as a picnic area and BBQs. Check out Callalla Bay and Beach on the north side of Jervis Bay. The beach is the longest at 6kms, whilst the bay has beautiful sail boats to gaze upon. Our pick for a nature experience including snorkelling, corals, iridescent blue seaweed and stingray feeding are Murrays and Blenheim. You’ll need a few days to explore even part of what Jervis Bay has to offer – all a stones throw from gorgeous and bustling towns such as Huskisson and Vincentia.

surf Shoalhaven With plentiful uncrowded waves, pristine waters and surf that suits all skill levels and all conditions – the Shoalhaven is a surfing mecca. You can see how world class talent such as World Champion, Tyler Wright and her brothers Owen and Mikey have emerged from our unspoilt region.

FAMILY SURF SAFARI There’s nothing quite like the rush of standing up on your first wave. Get the whole family involved in a surf lesson at Culburra or Mollymook Beaches. Build your confidence on gentle clean waves, then work your way up to our bommies and point breaks (if you’re game). If you feel like chilling out, hire a stand up paddle board and explore the ocean beyond the breakers or one of our crystal clear inlets.

A COAST WITH EVERY BREAK With unspoilt coastlines, consisting of swell exposed beaches and protected coves, the South Coast of NSW is known for having an abundance of breaks. Thanks to the Shoalhaven’s rugged coastline which stretches for 176km, there are plenty of breaks to go round. Check out our National Parks such as Murramarang (around Bawley Point) for some of the best. Drop in to one of our surf stores or coffee shops and get a hot tip on breaks from the local salties.

liking biking MOUNTAIN BIKING How better to take in the Shoalhaven countryside than from a mountain bike? Paul Traynor, the owner of Berry Mountain Cycles, says if you’re serious about your riding, check out a trio of tracks. Condoo, Superbowl, and Butterfly are in the Currambene State Forest, located 15 minutes south of Nowra, off Forest Rd near Callala. If you’re into more of a scenic ride try the 24km Kangaroo River and return ride – start in scenic Kangaroo Valley village, cross the famous Hampden Bridge and then take your time enjoying the scenery on the quiet Upper Kangaroo River Road. Check out the 28km Pigeon House Mountain to Milton ride – start at the Pigeon House Mountain car park and head down Yardboro Road to Woodstock Road which leads you into beautiful Milton.

PUSHIES Much of Jervis Bay is bicycle friendly with bike paths bordering a lot of the coast. For a ride with a difference, set off from Plantation Point in Vincentia to the public wharf in Huskisson, via the new section of path at Orion Beach. If you’re feeling excited, jump on the Husky Ferry and bike around the new bike paths in Myola and Callala. Explore the quiet back streets of Sussex Inlet and then head south down the Springs Road to the hamlets of Cudmirrah and Berrara. This is a flexible route about 20km and flat. If you can’t bring your own, there are plenty of places to hire bikes for the whole family. We even have businesses that will bring the bikes to you, and some holiday houses that include bikes with your stay. What an awesome way to see the region whilst burning off a few calories from your holiday indulgences! Just talk to our friendly Visitor Services Team for more information.

Lead your own adrenalin pumping expedition or be a weekend warrior and try something new

16 | Shoalhaven Visitor Guide 2017

world class adventure With a huge part of our region being wilderness, we have some pretty exciting terrain to adventure. Home to the 2016 Adventure Racing World Championships, you too can lead your own adrenalin pumping expedition or be a weekend warrior and try something new with fantastic guides and tour operators.

CLIMB POINT PERPENDICULAR The clue’s in the name at this stupefying location at the heads of Jervis Bay. Located within the Beecroft Weapons Range, there are numerous climbs available here, whether you’re into trad or sport climbing. The rock is a sandstone crag and has plenty of cracks and breaks to make your climb interesting. It’s not a place for inexperienced climbers and if you’re new to this spot we can highly recommend the book Climb Point Perp or local climb businesses that will take you on an amazing day out at a range of sites.

DIVE JERVIS BAY As amazing as Jervis Bay is, most of its splendour remains hidden from view beneath the surface of pristine waters. Dive Jervis Bay and Crest Diving are the main scuba operators in the bay and have been taking out explorers of the deep for years. PADI courses are available if required, or if you’re already qualified, jump on a boat dive. See a diverse range of creatures including sea dragons, blue gropers, sharks, seals (best in winter), whales and all the incredible ocean wildlife where the warm and cold waters meet. TREES ADVENTURE Trees Adventure is an epic high-wire adventure park that takes place in the forest canopy amongst sandstone escarpment. The park includes awesome flying fox zip lines so you can zoom through the trees, with black runs for the wild ones or gentle runs for little ones (and scaredy cats). Why not visit Shoalhaven Zoo while you are there, they are both located on the banks of the Shoalhaven River near Nowra.

See page 74 for more walks

bushwalks await With huge amounts of the Shoalhaven officially declared wilderness, it’s easy to escape the buzz of modern life and tread the less travelled paths. We have so many walks of different shapes and sizes, but here are a few you might want to try.

PIGEON HOUSE MOUNTAIN (DITHOL) This most distinctive peak in the Shoalhaven is of great significance to the local Aboriginal people, and is located in the Morton National Park. It offers unforgettable vistas from its summit, and is for those up for a bit of a challenge! The walk to the top is 5km and includes some steep sections, with ladders you have to climb, so you’ll need to be relatively fit to complete this one. Along the way you can enjoy forest, heathland and amazing views through rocky gullies amongst the age-old sandstone overhangs. 5km (2.5 – 3.5 hours) return.

BOMADERRY CREEK WALK Located just north of Nowra, this creek – and the walks near it – are a hidden gem, and cool oasis on a hot summer’s day. With four short walks to choose from that either follow the river or meander through the rainforest gully, this is an attractive walk for an adventurous family. There is a picnic area with BBQ where you can rest or let the kids run around. You’ll also find a rainbow serpent mural and clay footprints that tell the story of the importance of this gorge to the local aboriginal people. Dogs are permitted on leash. Park at the end of Narang Road in Bomaderry. Walk one is 5.5kms, walk two is 1.4kms.

GONDWANA COAST FOSSIL WALK On the northern side of Ulladulla Harbour in Brodie Park, you will find the ‘Time Walk’. Step back in time (a mere 270,000,000 years) and explore the natural history of the region including its world class fossils. It’s an easy walk to explore on your own or jump on a guided tour and nerd out with exciting scientific facts. Head into town and take a look at the wonderful array of geological artefacts from around the world at Fossil House, all fully run by passionate volunteers. The Time Walk (500 metres fully paved) and the guided harbour walk is 2.5 hours.

featuring creatures From getting up close and personal with animals at Shoalhaven Zoo, to fluffy and feathered natives and marine diversity beyond compare, come and connect with these wild beauties in the Shoalhaven. They’re not hard to find! LION FEEDING & MONKEY MANIA

WHALE TALES

In a picturesque location on the edge of the mighty Shoalhaven River, Shoalhaven Zoo is home to over 100 species of native and exotic mammals, birds and reptiles. Unique encounters with the zoo’s resident critters are available, including an exciting lion or monkey feeding session. Or just stroll the huge grounds and enjoy the well-loved animals.

Whales migrate along the east coast of Australia twice a year – once heading north for warmer waters to breed and then south with calves in tow – to return to the feeding grounds of Antarctica. Mums and bubs love to stop in Jervis Bay and have a play in our calm warm waters on their way back home. Catch a boat from Huskisson wharf with Jervis Bay Wild or Dolphin Watch Cruises. Alternatively grab your binoculars and head to Point Perpendicular near Currarong, Penguin Head Lookout in Culburra Beach, Cunjorong Point in Bendalong or Ulladulla Lighthouse.

ROOS Australia’s most famous marsupials abound in the Shoalhaven thanks to our wealth of parks and wilderness. If you’d like to meet our two-legged friends, then head to Pebbly Beach in Murramarang National Park which is a regular hang out for our ‘surfing kangaroos’, or head to Booderee National Park where you can camp with these furry regulars at Green Patch and Cave Beach. You’d be surprised how many are around, keep an eye out at dawn and dusk when driving too.

FRIENDLY STINGRAYS Our unspoilt waterways are teaming with life, including majestic stingrays. The best spots to see them are, the Woollamia Regional Boat Ramp on Currumbene Creek in Huskisson, the Murrays Beach Boat Ramp in Booderee National Park, and Bendalong Boat Ramp. Take a handful of prawns or bait and they may just come up and tickle your toes for some food!

BIRDS Ornithologists will find plenty to study in the Shoalhaven, both on the coast and inland. At Lake Woolumboola you’ll find a large portion of the world’s Black Swan population, while Comerong Island and Sholhaven Heads are great places to see diversity including waterbirds, bush birds and shorebirds. Take your binoculars and keep dogs away from these fragile breeding grounds.

SEAL SNORKELLING Seals have long made Shoalhaven their home. For sightings of seals, take a boat with tour operators from Huskisson wharf to Drum and Drumsticks, an amazing geological feature north of Jervis Bay, which is home to one of the bay’s two Australian Fur Seal colonies. Winter is the best time to see these sea puppies.

make a splash Kayaking, wakeboarding, waterskiing, kitesurfing, stand up paddling – whether you like your watersports white-knuckle or peaceful, we’ve got you covered.

PEACEFUL PADDLING One of the most peaceful ways to get out on the water is to go kayaking – either in the ocean (open or protected bays) or on a flat lake. If you’re new to kayaking then try a paddle in protected Jervis Bay – hire a kayak and paddle from Shark Net Beach to Plantation Point and enjoy the crystal clear bay. If you prefer some time on a lake, then try either Lake Conjola, Burrill Lake or Lake Tabourie. RIVERS AND RAPIDS If you like your kayaking to be more spirited than a peaceful paddle over glass-like water then why not tackle the Shoalhaven and Kangaroo Valley Rivers. Whether you go for a couple hours on a guided tour or a three day expedition, our rivers deliver the reconnection with nature you’ve been searching for. There’s a reason we are rated in the top 12 paddling spots of Australasia by Australian Geographic. WILD ON WATER Fancy being towed behind a speedboat at 100kph while you hang on tight to an inflatable? How about waterskiing, wakeboarding or wakesurfing? The team at Walking on Water (WOW) in Ulladulla can cater to all needs and group sizes, or for a serene and old school experience, hire a pedal boat from Big4 on Burrill Lake. For a full list of watersport operators talk to our qualified Visitor Services Team or see the back of the guide for more information. SUP SCENE

Stand up paddle boarding enables just about everyone to get out on the water and enjoy incredible scenery. Boards can be hired at outlets up and down the coast and lessons are also available. Further south, hook up with Coastal Paddle Surf and take to the stunning Narrawallee Inlet.

HIRE A TINNIE AT GREENWELL POINT The Crookhaven River is a tributary of the Shoalhaven and flows right past the cute coastal village of Greenwell Point. Hire a tinnie by the hour, half or full day from South Coast Boat Hire and enjoy some great fishing in tidal waters. You might also see pelicans, sand pipers, cormorants, sea eagles and stingrays.

THROW IN A LINE St Georges Basin and Sussex Inlet are well known as a fisherman’s paradise. Pop your boat in at one of many ramps, or throw a line in from the shore for your chance to pull in a big bream, whiting or flathead. Sussex Inlet also has an annual Family Fishing Carnival in winter.

MARINE PARKS Jervis Bay is an official Marine Park and there are some restrictions in place for fishing. Be sure to check in with a local tackle shop or jump on a charter, they’ll take you to some great spots to fish (snapper, flathead, bream) with excellent sightseeing as a bonus, including whales from May to November.

INDULGE AND PAMPER

WELLNESS AND ‘REWILDING’

Pinnacle at Bannisters by the Sea is a world class day spa. Combine a fantastic treatment in a spa room (with a view) or champers at the Veuve Clicquot pop-up bar. For a casual, hip vibe, head to their new beach side hotel Pavillion and enjoy sundowners by the rooftop pool. This is our pick for a girls or mother and daughters weekend.

Bluegum Bushcraft will ‘rewild’ your kids and introduce them to the delights of campfires, hunter-gatherer practices, making shelter and generally reconnecting with the natural environment. The programs on offer serve as an antidote to the pressures of raising children in an urban environment. Mum and Dad come along too and enjoy getting back to nature. Bluegum also offer women-only retreats and even a survival quest program (via invitation only). Get in early for School Holidays programs call 0412 181 943.

If you are looking for a romantic couples escape, head to Kangaroo Valley’s Crystal Creek Meadows and stay in a spa cottage on 16 acres of tranquillity. Have a luxurious experience at the day spa, grab a picnic hamper or hire their silver MG for a romantic drive. Back 2 Earth in Berry is the stunning five-acre property of Marc and Jenny – a farm offering accommodation in cosy B&B, loft and farm stay residences. Take the family for a farm stay - there are some real cuties to cuddle - or reboot your relationship with a full rejuvenation program. Three, five and seven day packages will ‘detox and rejuvenate your mind body and relationship’. They also offer raw vegan meals, couples counselling and treatments such as float tank and massage.

SEE THE WOOD FOR THE TREES The Japanese enjoy a therapy called “shinrin yoku” which literally translates to “forest bathing”. The idea is that by walking through a forest you can enjoy improvements to your cardiovascular and immune systems. So if you want a bit of time away from that screen or phone then we’d like to point out that over 70% of the Shoalhaven is National Park or forest.

NOWRA STEET MURALS Take a walk around town and check out multiple works – Local street artist Daniel Kelly’s graffiti style murals, renowned artist, Matt Adnate, crafted a beautiful piece dedicated to the Yuen nation, Guido Van Helten's famous photo of a fisherman at Greenwell Point and Arthur Boyd depicted by artist Owen Dippie. SHOALHAVEN REGIONAL GALLERY, NOWRA Located in the centre of Nowra, the Shoalhaven Regional Gallery is an arts centre exhibiting some of the best touring works by both contemporary and traditional artists, alongside works from the Shoalhaven City Collection. BUNDANON TRUST The spiritual home of the arts community in the Shoalhaven, Bundanon, was the home of Arthur Boyd, celebrated painter and sculptor. Bundanon and Riversdale are a renowned arts facility offering educational activities, residencies for artists, a home to a collection of 4,000 works of art, as well as the flagship Spring event – Siteworks. GALERIA ANIELA Established in 1994, Galeria Aniela is an internationally recognised commercial art gallery supporting Australian artists, indigenous artworks and European masters. Drop in as you stroll around Kangaroo Valley. HUSKISSON GALLERY Take a moment out from the beaches of Jervis Bay to enjoy the artwork, photography and giftware on display at Husky Gallery. Most of the works are local and affordable.

JINDYANDY, PYREE Set in picturesque pasture-lands just east of Nowra, Jindyandy is a shopping precinct with gifts, crafts, furniture, food and much more. Built by convicts in 1830, the surrounding architecture and heritage is a key attraction. MEROOGAL, NOWRA This historic house is a beautifully preserved 100 year old home and the namesake of the Meroogal Prize, an arts prize for women. Open on Saturdays, step back in time and tour the house, picnic on the grounds and learn about our rich colonial history. COOLANGATTA ESTATE Now a thriving winery with multiple attractions, Alexander Berry and Edward Wollstonecraft founded this property, the first European settlement on the NSW South Coast. Enjoy the historic buildings, now set amongst beautiful vineyards. FLEET AIR ARM MUSEUM Housed in an aircraft hangar at the entrance to HMAS Albatross, is a world standard exhibition of over 25 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, some quite rare. The “Wings Over Water” exhibition features a range of historic Naval Aircraft as well as audio-visual displays with stories of these aircraft and those who flew and maintained them.
