Jervis Bay Treasures A jewel on the New South Wales South Coast, world famous Jervis Bay is an enchanting stretch of sea. This pristine underwater paradise is teeming with captivating marine species and uniquely Australian wildlife. The charming coastal towns, unspoilt blue waters and glistening white sands await. Jervis Bay’s famous white sand, a result of high levels of quartz leftover from the natural erosion process, is a must see during your stay. Hyams Beach is very popular, but Blenheim and Greenfield Beaches are worth exploring too – views of the crystal clear waters are absolutely spectacular and the beaches are way less crowded. Check out the 100 Beach Challenge for all our white sand beaches. Get up close and personal with our spectacular marine life by booking an eco-cruise with Jervis Bay Wild or Dolphin Watch. You’ll be completely captivated by our resident dolphins and will get the chance to witness the marvelous humpback whale migration from May to November. Mums

The park boasts plenty of birdwatching opportunities – be amazed by the local white-bellied sea eagles and black browed albatrosses. Book a session with Crest Diving or Dive Jervis Bay and snorkel or dive in this striking world under the sea. You might even be able to swim side by side with the most northern colony of Australian fur seals.

Classified and protected as a Commonwealth Marine Reserve, Jervis Bay is a unique habitat where the warm waters of the East Australian Current meet the cooler water from Bass Straight, supporting a huge diversity of marine life. You could be lucky enough to see bioluminescence, a phosphorescent phenomena that makes the water glow. Electric blue algae is a common sight amongst snorkelers and recently, scientists discovered ‘Octlantis’ in Jervis Bay, a community-minded group of Octopuses who defy all previous stigma as loners! See dpi.nsw.gov.au for a user guide for the bay.

Share in Aboriginal Culture The Shoalhaven is a unique natural and cultural environment with rich Aboriginal history playing an important role in making this region so special. Booderee National Park is co-managed by the local Wreck Bay Community and Parks Australia. Visit the Booderee Botanic Gardens or engage in cultural activities like campfire stories, weaving and bushtucker in the school holidays. Chat to the local Aboriginal Rangers in the Booderee Visitor Centre (phone 02 4443 0977) for tips on the best beaches and campgrounds. Make sure to keep an eye out for the Koffee Klan caravan at Green Patch or roving through the park. Galamban Extraordinary Aboriginal Experiences, run by the Freeman family, offers unforgettable cultural experiences. Learn ancient traditions, hear dreaming stories and engage in the cultural heritage of Wreck Bay (phone 0437 721 481). Further south, Noel Butler runs Aboriginal cultural teachings and enrichment programs called Nuragunyu in the Budawang Ranges (phone 0405 646 911). Traditional arts have been passed down through the generations and we are lucky to have local artisans sharing

their stories with us. Take a walk amongst the hand carved poles at Callala Beach and Crookhaven Heads. Or if you’d like your very own piece of culture to take home, visit Laddie Timbery at the Maritime Museum in Huskisson. Pick up a boomerang or wall hanging and have a yarn with Laddie - he’s a champion boomerang thrower if you need any tips! Deepen your connection to the land by venturing out on a designated walking track. Stroll the One Track for All or call 4455 5883 to organise a guided tour along Coomee Nulunga Track with a local Aboriginal guide. The National Parks Discovery Ranger program also partners with Aboriginal community members who can guide you through Bomaderry Creek Regional Park. This is a very significant place in both recent and ancient history with interpretative signs, mosaics and a rich natural history. You can book a tour of this stunning gorge via National Parks and Wildlife Service with a local Aboriginal Discovery Ranger by contacting the local National Parks office directly on 02 4422 2170.

32 | 2018 Shoalhaven Visitor Guide

Live Like a Local Check out this long weekend itinerary with locals Nathan and Jade in Milton, Mollymook and Ulladulla. Day 1 Start the day with a beach yoga session with Milton Yoga Hub with the gal pals and watch the sun rise over our glistening sea. If you’d prefer some adventure on the high seas, Ulladulla Fishing Charters offer an excellent sightseeing tour. Explore the coastline by boat for the opportunity to haul in our fresh local snapper. Come back to your cosy accommodation, embrace the laidback Shoalhaven lifestyle and slow down with some “me” time. Beauty Indulgence Milton will come to your place for a decadent mobile massage, a sure-fire way to help you switch off from the world. Have an early night and fall asleep to crashing waves.

Day 2 Need a little refresher in the morning? Dust off the night before with a surf at Narrawallee or Mollymook Beach. A dip in the saltwater is the perfect local remedy. Combine this with a caffeine hit at boutique roaster Maverick Coffee and you’ll be pumped and ready to take on a new day.

As the sun goes down, head into Milton for an evening of live music. Harvest Bar serves up a delicious tapas menu and the expert bartenders make a mean cocktail. Share some plates of arancini balls, sip on espresso martinis and party with your crew into the night.

Day 3 Start with a spot of shopping down the main strip of Ulladulla, and visit Native for a bite to eat. This harbourside café serves up a nourishing wholefoods menu that changes with the seasons. The 15-hour pulled lamb salad is a local favourite and absolutely delicious! Walk off your meal down at Racecourse Beach in the afternoon. This long surf beach is often uncrowded and the rock platform is great for exploring at low tide. Visiting at dusk will end your stay in the Shoalhaven with a magical seaside sunset.

Left: getting ready for a surf at Narrawallee Beach. Left to right: having a massage on the balcony, yoga on the beach, Harvest Bar Milton, Maverick Coffee in Ulladulla.

Charming Coastal Towns Our lovely towns all have something unique to offer and are waiting to be discovered. Plan a road trip, ticking these charming local enclaves off your holiday bucket list. The bustling heritage town of Berry is a mecca for shopping and home to many cute boutiques and cafés. Start the morning by stocking up on homewares and revamping your wardrobe at the stylish boutiques, then treat your sweet tooth at the famous local bakeries and providores. Driving inland along the winding mountain roads lead you into Kangaroo Valley. This picturesque village is nestled in amongst sweeping escarpments and gorgeous green farmlands. Grab a hearty lunch in the village, just a stone’s

throw away from the famous Hampden Bridge. Find an open fireplace to warm up next to on a chilly winter’s day, or cool off in the village swimming pool in the heat of summer. Add Nowra to your itinerary - our bustling commercial hub is filled with fantastic coffee and inviting cafés. Whether it’s a shot of locally roasted espresso, a gourmet salad with a river view or a top shelf gin and tonic that you’re after – Nowra has it all. From Nowra, you’ll be able to reach the seaside town of Huskisson within half an hour. Be captivated by views of Jervis Bay’s gorgeous white sands, where dolphins and whales can sometimes be spotted from the shore or a boat

cruise. The thriving cultural scene means there are many places to shop, wine and dine. Grab an ice-cream and wander along the paved ‘round the bay walk’ for views to take your breath away. Cap off the road trip in the southern towns of Milton and Ulladulla. Heritage listed Milton has a gorgeous shopping strip filled with quaint boutiques, abundant cafes and some fantastic live music venues. Tucked between green, rolling hills to the west and famous Mollymook Beach to the east, the town oozes both country and coastal charm all in one hit. Ulladulla Harbour sets the scene for a bustling shopping and cafe scene. Enjoy some food with a view of the boats in this traditional fishing village.

Family Memories Grab the kiddies, pack your bags and take a break from your busy lives. Family holidays are about spending quality time together and creating everlasting memories. Swap the TVs, computers and phones for our family friendly itinerary, prepared by the experts at South Coast Kids. Your trip will be filled with tonnes of smiles, fun and laughter. Day 1 Start your day with a bite to eat at The Dish and Spoon in Nowra. There’s a cute family playroom here that’s filled with loads of entertainment for the little ones. Now you’re ready for an adrenaline pumping morning at Trees Adventure. This ropes course and ziplining experience is one for the older kids – where they can discover the Shoalhaven from high up in the tree tops. Just a few metres away is the Shoalhaven Zoo. Families with both young and older kids can spend the rest of the day exploring their wild side. Say hello to the animals, catch one of the live shows and get up close and personal during feeding times. You can already picture the smiles

on their faces while they hand feed the llamas, kangaroos and ponies on this wildlife adventure.

Day 2 Kick off a new day by exploring the great outdoors in a kayak with Kangaroo Valley Safaris. A family favourite trip starts from Hampden Bridge, guiding you through to Bendeela. This is one of the prettiest sections of Kangaroo River so take a moment to enjoy the scenery. The kids might even spot some wallabies or water dragons! A break from the all the outdoor adventures is the perfect way to cap off your holiday. Head to the movies at Roxy Cinemas, who screen all the latest blockbusters and also host special family fun day screenings for selected movies. The complex, built in 1935 oozes art deco charm and also provides a nice place to retreat during the colder months.

Left to right: picnic at Bawley Point, learning about fishing with Dad, swimming in the clear ocean, fishing at Racecourse Beach, barefoot rock hopping.

36 | 2018 Shoalhaven Visitor Guide

Day 3 Begin the morning with a yummy breakfast at Greendales. This eatery is nestled in beautiful Pyree with large windows providing stunning views of the green hinterland. The young tots will love hanging out in the ever-changing outdoor play space while the folks soak up the surrounds with a delicious coffee. Continue toward the coast and head to Culburra Beach for some rock hopping and beachcombing or go for a bit of a stroll to the old Crookhaven Lighthouse and enjoy breathtaking views and whale watching over the Crookhaven River to Orient Point. Retire in one of the many kid friendly holiday parks and spend some time in the splashzone or on a giant jumping pillow. Kick back, relax and watch the kids enjoy the great outdoors!

Luxe Living The coast is calling. Need a little breather from the daily grind or the corporate jungle? Treat yourself in the beautiful Shoalhaven and indulge in some of our luxurious South Coast gems. Take a break, you’ve earned it! Explore Jervis Bay’s pristine waters in style by booking your own private yacht. Both Jervis Bay Sailing Charters and Discover Jervis Bay Luxury Sailing give you access to a glamorous, once in a lifetime experience, accommodating up to twelve guests. Spend the day sailing and sipping on champagne with your own private host. After coming ashore, if you’re keen for cocktails, happy hour is famous at Wild Ginger in Huskisson where experienced mixologists have created a cocktail menu that pairs brilliantly with the Asian cuisine. If Saki is more your passion you can’t go past Kanpai who serve a huge range with an amazing traditional Japanese food menu. Our hot tip for date night is The Quarters Huskisson where you can enjoy a relaxed drink and modern menu. As the evening ends you can retire to nearby Paperbark Camp and glamp in a stunning safari tent under the stars,

with a crackling fire and Gunyah Restaurant on site. It’s the ideal retreat for busy urbanites keen to escape to the great outdoors without sacrificing comfort and luxury. Within the green rolling hills of Milton are some amazing foodie delights including multi-award winning Cupitt Winery, Brewery and Fromagerie. The property oozes French provincial charm and is a beautiful place to cap off your stay. In fact, the vineyard is just one of many different cellar doors within the region. Our penchant for fantastic wine comes as no surprise considering the unspoilt Shoalhaven terrain produces clean and crisp varietals. Sample some internationally acclaimed drops and watch the sunset over the picturesque hinterland.

Left to right: Cupitt’s – sunset, glamping at Paperbark Camp, sailing Jervis Bay. Right: Bannisters Pavilion.

38 | 2018 Shoalhaven Visitor Guide

Nearby is the beachside locale of Mollymook, a great place to kick off a new day. You may have already heard about Rick Stein’s restaurant at Bannisters by the Sea, but did you know about their sister hotel? Located just a stone’s throw away, Bannisters Pavilion strikes the perfect balance between laidback and glitzy. Laze under the poolside umbrellas or glam it up with cocktails. Anyone interested in a more rustic wining and dining vibe can head to Harvest Bar in Milton, just a hop, skip and jump away.

Shoalhaven Visitor Guide 2018 | 39

Leave Only Footprints We welcome you to the Shoalhaven to enjoy the clean waters and green wilderness of our unspoilt coast. We treasure our beaches and crystal-clear bays, while you’re here, join in with the ‘take 3 for the sea’, movement that locals are passionate about and help keep our waterways pristine. With one of the cleanest catchments in New South Wales you can really enjoy locally grown oysters or your catch of the day, not only is buying local healthy but it supports our communities and farmers. When you shop, keep an eye out for Boomerang Bags, a movement where locals sew fabric bags for free use and return to hubs in our coastal towns. Some towns have even become plastic bag free. We love our coffee and also our keep cups, you can buy our Shoalhaven-branded cups at our Visitor Centres if you want to take the Shoalhaven home with you.

If you’re taking a walk or having a day out on the beach, remember to leave just your footprints by: carrying out all rubbish; keeping to the track; respecting flora and fauna; complying with any quarantined areas - they are normally there to protect endangered species like shorebirds etc. The Shoalhaven has a number of fully eco-certified properties and attractions, see more at shoalhaven.com.

thank you for helping to keep us unspoilt Left to right: Jervis Bay, Silos Estate Winery in Berry, Crystal Creek Meadows in Kangaroo Valley.
