Shoalhaven Visitor Guide 2019 | 9
White Sand Coast World famous Jervis Bay is a sparkling jewel on the New South Wales South Coast. White sand beaches, clear blue waters, friendly villages and unspoilt national parks are dotted along a captivating coastline, brimming with unique Australian wildlife and adventure that spans over 100 kilometres. Bountiful levels of natural quartz make our sands glitter and give turquoise colour to the crystal blue sea. You’ll just want to dive in, the calm waters are a safe place for those who like to paddle on a coastal getaway or just chill under whispering eucalypts. You’ve probably heard of Hyams Beach but did you know that there are 16 white sand beaches in Jervis Bay? Find your new favourite – it might be nestled in Huskisson or Vincentia, or waiting for you just off the beaten path in beautiful swimming spots without another soul in sight. Bordered by the Round the Bay shared pathway and the White Sands Walk, Collingwood Beach is tucked away but still close to the creature comforts of Vincentia. Keep walking to discover Plantation Point, with great barbeque and picnic facilities making it the perfect hub for days spent at nearby Barfleur and Orion Beaches. The north side of the bay is a lesser-known paradise, with Callala Bay and Callala Beach and a few other secret beaches, like Long Beach on Beecroft Peninsula.
A bit further south in world class Booderee National Park are the snorkelling hotspots of Murrays Beach and Instagram favourite Hole in the Wall. For a list of our white sand wonders, check out the 100 Beach Challenge. Get to know the natural environment of Jervis Bay Marine Park on an eco cruise with Jervis Bay Wild or Dolphin Watch. You may be escorted by our resident playful dolphins or catch a glimpse of our cute Australian fur seals. Whales delight during the annual migration (May to November), and Humpback and Southern Right mums and their gorgeous newborn calves often stay for days as the little ones learn how to ‘whale’. When the sun sets, delicious dinners await at the many restaurants in Huskisson and Vincentia. Waterfront evening walks might reward you with a glimpse of the glittering blue bioluminescence of Jervis Bay. This rare phenomenon occurs when currents and sea temperatures align to create the perfect conditions for tiny organisms to grow, and glow, in the night.

Feeling a little bit more adventurous? Gosangs Tunnel in Abrahams Bosom Reserve is reached by crawling through an elevated sea cave and leaves you standing over a pristine sea, overlooking schools of shining fish, migrating whales and the deep Pacific Ocean. Behold Mother Nature!
Inland adventures await around Nowra and the beautiful Shoalhaven River. Aspiring rock climbers can learn the ropes with Outdoor Raw or Climb Nowra, and pros already know Nowra is a renowned sports climbing destination. If you’re more of a dirt surfer, mountain bikers can ride the South Coast United Mountain Bikers (SCUM) tracks in Currambene State Forest near Callala. Getting a bit dirty and muddy on two wheels is all part of the fun, especially when you can jump into our unspoilt ocean to clean off afterwards. An adventure filled day is perfectly capped off by falling asleep under the stars at a campground with a crackling fire. It’s time to get primal!

Wildlife Wonderland Connect with captivating creatures that call the unspoilt Shoalhaven home. Our epic landscape is rich in wildlife that live in harmony with the seasons. Lounge with our resident kangaroos at the beach, swim with seals in the sea or follow the antics of local and migrating birds - the wilderness is calling. The Shoalhaven is bursting with so much native wildlife that our animals will often just find you! Amongst the green, rolling hills of Kangaroo Valley, there are many cute wombats strolling about and grazing on fresh grass. Make sure to take care whilst driving and keep an eye out for these adorable creatures, great and small. Murramarang National Park is renowned for its beachloving kangaroos, especially at Pebbly Beach where they laze by the shore. You’ll also spot them at Cave Beach in Booderee National Park, so unspoilt that it is home to a gorgeous new group of eastern quolls. A relocation project means these native marsupials can now be found on Australia’s mainland for the first time in 60 years. We know it’s tough to not pet or feed the animals but it’s an important part of keeping our wildlife happy and healthy for generations to come. If you do want to get up close and personal with some furry friends, chat to the friendly team at Shoalhaven Zoo.
Visit Lake Wollumboola, a nesting site for migrating swans and home to the endangered Little Tern, or venture south to Burrill Lake where Azure Kingfishers hunt for fish in Stoney Creek. Remember to tread with care and observe all nearby signage as many threatened shorebirds nest on beaches throughout the region. Check out the Bird Walks Guide on our website for inspiration and a bird checklist. In the sea, you’ll find a multitude of marine life too. In addition to the famous Humpbacks, a variety of whales including Orcas, Minkes and Southern Rights migrate along the coast from May to November. Excellent vantage points are Penguin Head, Culburra Beach or Warden Head Lighthouse, where you might also catch a glimpse of surfing dolphins and delightful fur seals resting on the rocks. Jervis Bay Marine Park is home to Leafy Sea Dragons, Nudibranchs and seasonal subtropical species along with resident dolphins, penguins and rays.

Cultural Trails Imagine a landscape so captivating that it stole the heart of one of Australia’s most iconic artists, Arthur Boyd. Think breathtaking natural surroundings, exceptional galleries and a laidback pace that you just won’t find in the big smoke, the opportunities for inspiration are endless. It’s no wonder the Shoalhaven is a creative hub where you can observe, ponder or immerse yourself in arts and culture. Discover contemporary vibes in and around the urban hub of Nowra’s CBD, where the Nowra Murals Trail will lead you to Shoalhaven Regional Gallery, Nowra with its dynamic program of local and touring exhibitions. The murals themselves were created by famous street artists including Smug and Matt Adnate, and celebrate local heroes in large, vibrant, colourful works in the streetscape. There are many more small galleries throughout the region that can be visited along one of our arts and culture trails. The unspoilt beauty of the Shoalhaven mesmerised legendary Arthur Boyd so much that he actually donated his residence, Bundanon Trust, to the Australian people. Boyd’s former studio is nestled along the banks of the Shoalhaven River, housing almost 4000 artworks and a stunning venue for a variety of cultural and musical events all year round.
Our prime seaside location on the New South Wales South Coast also makes the Shoalhaven an important player in Australia’s maritime activities, past and present. Sydney’s famous Lady Denman Ferry was built in Huskisson and carried passengers for 67 years, and now rests at Jervis Bay Maritime Museum. It’s easy to spend a day at this beautiful place, the building and grounds showcase a complex maritime history from our first nation’s people to shipwrecks, whaling expeditions, maritime battles and naval activities. To witness some of Nowra’s naval aviation legacy, venture down to the HMAS Albatross site, which is also home to the Fleet Air Arm Museum, a hangar style space that’s filled with an extensive collection of old planes and a variety of military and navy relics. A leisurely stroll along a heritage trail in Berry or Milton is also a relaxing way to discover our charming country towns with vintage streetscapes and National Trust buildings.

Coastal Cellar Doors Fertile soils, a coastal breeze and a temperate climate make the Shoalhaven a pretty unique paradise for wine lovers. Producing an excellent drop is in our nature! With almost a dozen cellar doors, most just a stone’s throw from the beach, it’s easy to have a sip then take a dip in our sparkling seas.
Chambourcin is another variety that thrives in coastal terroir, one of the few red varieties which has naturally pink or red juice. Head to the hinterland to Yarrawa Estate for tastings, the small, hillside cellar door boasts sweeping views of Kangaroo Valley and the owners love to share the harvest from their orchard and garden with guests.
Special occasion? All that fresh air made you hungry? Most of our wineries have great restaurants on site too. Grab a meal at the revamped Mountain Ridge café and restaurant at Shoalhaven Heads, where the organic Shiraz pairs perfectly with a delicious homemade pot pie and the cosy fireplace is the perfect spot to warm up in winter. Finish with the famous Macadamia Nut liqueur. Why not book a winery tour for your next group celebration? What do you get when you mix a winery with a brewery, add a pinch of restaurant and a touch of fromagerie? Cupitt’s – the glorious result of such a concoction, helmed by the talented Cupitt family. Tucked away behind the green rolling hills of Milton and just moments from Mollymook Beach, this venue consistently wins prestigious awards. Tour the cellar door and brewery, followed by a paddock to plate experience at the restaurant.

Enjoy a taste of this celebrated drop and wander the grounds of the historic property. After your stroll, move from winery to waves within minutes – stunning Seven Mile Beach at Shoalhaven Heads is just a hop, skip and a jump away.

Treat Yourself A Shoalhaven holiday is all about taking a moment out of your routine to spoil yourself. Explore, recharge, indulge, repeat. The fun doesn’t stop when the sun sets, that’s when our boutique bars light up! Treat yourself and enjoy being waited on, there are plenty of ways to celebrate those oh so special occasions or just relax and indulge in luxury. It wouldn’t be a holiday without a little celebration, right? Let our expert mixologists treat you to a fun night on the town, fuelled by some deliciously decadent cocktails. There are some great dining spots with happy hour to start your evening right. Little Snapper at Culburra Beach is fantastic for relaxed festivities amongst friends, or get your groove on at Harvest Bar in Milton, a rustic venue with killer cocktails, live music and tapas menus. Travelling in a group for a buck’s or hen’s party? Park the cars and venture out on a food and wine tour for a celebration to remember. Many local operators including Kenny Escapes and Wine Knot Tours can organise the whole shebang, so no one needs to worry about being the designated driver! Sip on award-winning Shoalhaven wine with a yummy cheese plate while overlooking a lush vineyard and rolling green hills. Getaways are about indulging in a bit of luxury, which is exactly what Bannisters by the Sea offers. Book a romantic spa suite which overlooks the waters of Mollymook and relax with a rejuvenating couples’ massage at the day spa.
Venture down the road to their swanky sister hotel Bannisters Pavilion, where you can bathe under the sun with a cocktail in hand at the funky poolside bar. For the ultimate romantic retreat, check in at Paperbark Camp in Jervis Bay. This luxury establishment has just celebrated it’s 20th birthday and are pioneers of glamping in Australia. Grab dinner at the on-site Gunyah Restaurant before snuggling up in your glamorous safari tent, perched amongst the trees. You can also glamp under the stars with Glamping Out or get away amongst the farm animals at The Woods Farm – both perfect sanctuaries for stays in the wild without having to sacrifice comfort and luxury. Check out our latest swanky venue, Bangalay Luxury Villas in Shoalhaven Heads, complete with great dining and resort-style vibes, literally metres from Seven Mile Beach.

Shopping Towns Explore our charming village streets and CBDs. You’ll find a friendly country vibe while you discover sophisticated boutiques, bustling foodie enclaves and traditional shopping experiences. Since the highway bypass, the heritage town of Berry has an even more attractive streetscape with a variety of boutiques and many places to stock up on handmade homewares, clothing and gifts. The surrounding dairy country and vineyards inspire tasty creations, so treat yourself at one of the famous local cafés as you venture along the retail trail.
Nearby at Jervis Bay you’ll find the seaside hamlet of Huskisson, alive with fresh ocean air. Peruse the vibrant boutiques, contemporary and international eateries, followed by a stroll or ride on the Round the Bay Walk. The mesmerising views of the white sand beaches along this track are made even sweeter with an ice cream or gelato in hand.
A picturesque drive inland leads you into Kangaroo Valley, a hub for giftware and country inspired homewares. The scenic town is tucked away amongst sweeping escarpments and gorgeous, green farmlands. Soak up the views while grabbing a hearty lunch in the village centre – a short stroll from the famous Hampden Bridge.
Further south is the heritage-listed town of Milton, filled with an array of boutiques selling artisanal goods, quaint homewares and modern fashion. All of this, alongside abundant cafes and some fantastic live music hotspots makes this village a perfect shopping destination.
Our lively commercial hub of Nowra has everything you’ll need during your stay and is a stone’s throw from the majestic Shoalhaven River. Café culture and shopping is booming here, offering up coffee and brunch options galore. Be spontaneous and decide on the day, or dive into online reviews to discover the hidden gems and quirky cafes, including two local roasters.
The seaside shopping hub of Ulladulla is designed to take advantage of the spectacular harbour views. Seafood eateries thrive here thanks to the small fleet of fishing boats, while great surf beaches ensure a splash of quality surf shops and boutiques. Be sure to check what’s on at the Marlin Hotel, a live music venue that hosts both local and international acts. Many of our towns are plasticwise, we love our oceans, so don’t forget to bring your own bags or buy or borrow them while here!

Fancy a Roadtrip? A road trip is all about the journey to your destination. Discover new places, create new memories and ignore your GPS’s natural inclination to take you along the fastest route. Trust us, the scenic route is always the most memorable. The Grand Pacific Drive: The stunning coastal gateway for the Sydney to Melbourne Touring Route. Sydneysiders, skip the highway and take the scenic route along the coast. Drive through the lush Royal National Park and come out onto the epic Sea Cliff Bridge. You’ll feel like a seabird as you glide above the Tasman Sea. Pull over for a coffee near Kiama Blowhole before continuing along the coastal road through Gerringong and arriving at Shoalhaven Heads. Melbournians, you lucky devils! Your journey to us will take you through the pristine Sapphire Coast and its charming coastal villages of Eden, Pambula and Bermagui. It’s a great place to stop for a seafood lunch, or indulge in a delicious pie, the perfect addition to a good, old Australian road trip! Tourist Drives 7 & 8: Take the waterfall way and hinterland journey from the Highlands to the Coast.
of Sydney. Be sure to stop at flowing Fitzroy Falls before the route splits in two. Shoalhaven Heads is easily reached by Tourist Drive 7, through Kangaroo Valley and Berry, and Tourist Drive 8 is the scenic route to Nowra and our southern, seaside towns. Pop into Cambewarra Mountain Lookout and Café for sweeping views of the Shoalhaven hinterland and coast. Main Road 92: From Canberra to the coast, a journey through our nation’s history. In addition to the Federal/Hume Highway drive that takes you through Kangaroo Valley, Canberrans can also venture along newly-sealed Main Rd 92. This road is the most direct route to Jervis Bay and is all about experiencing a slice of Australiana. Stop at the historic country towns of Bungendore, Tarago and Nerriga before reaching the Shoalhaven. The final leg of this route is actually the old Wool Road, where farmers in the 1800s used to transport wool from Canberra to the coast.

New Family Memories Life can get a bit crazy when you’ve just started your new family, which is why it’s so important to spend time together in these early bonding years. The Ulladulla and Bawley regions provide a peaceful escape during spring and autumn for parents with tiny tots - so grab the kids, pack the car and head to the Shoalhaven. A cheeky extra day off work never hurt anyone, anyway! Day 1
Day 2
Begin the trip with a hearty paddock to plate breakfast at Milk Haus in the rolling hills of Woodstock. The café has its own kitchen garden plus a chicken coop that the little ones will adore. Then continue along the foodie trail into the heart of Milton, where you can grab delicious picnic goodies from the Wholefoods Store, Flour Water Salt or the Heritage Bakery.
Wake to the sounds of birdsong and stroll down to the beach for a spot of morning fishing. The beaches and rocky platforms around Racecourse Beach and nearby Kioloa are great for teaching the young ones how to throw in a line.
After stocking your hamper with tasty treats, the kids will go mad for an afternoon of arcade games and dodgem cars down at Funland Ulladulla. Cap off the family fun day with a night beside the seaside at Racecourse Beach Tourist Park, where resident kangaroos are ready to welcome you!
Watch the video of this itinerary online: shoalhaven.com/ family-memories
A family favourite and surf spot, Bawley Beach is great for a beach picnic, with plenty of room to lay your blanket on the sand or grass. Make sure to walk down to the water because the kids will love saying hello to our super friendly resident rays.

Day 3 Spend the last day of the trip immersing yourself in the unspoilt wilderness of Pretty Beach in Murramarang National Park. Have your camera ready because our local kangaroos love to graze and lounge about on the grass beside the beach. Go in for a little swim, or take a drive to Depot Beach Rainforest Walk, a shady, lush 400m loop from Depot Beach picnic area, great for kids to jump across stepping stones and balance on the many logs that line the path.

Change for the Better Fran and Laurie Koster established their international business, Global Defence Solutions, in Shoalhaven City at Nowra in 1998 and haven’t looked back. “We build and supply a range of deployable buildings to be used as hospitals, kitchens, operation centres and accommodation that can be kitted up with air-conditioning and generators for field operations.” While the Shoalhaven’s thriving defence support industry made the region an obvious base for GDS, the real reason Fran and her husband Laurie settled in Nowra was simple, “we love the area so we started business here – it’s as easy as that!”
What’s on offer • Lifestyle benefits all year round • Cost effective Industrial land • Committed and stable workforce • Local business networks • Supportive local Council • Easy access to Sydney and international markets
