We want your pets to feel as welcome as you do in the Shoalhaven, nothing is more fun than when your dog gets to tag along on holidays. The Shoalhaven is one of Australia’s leading pet friendly destinations from off leash beaches to dog friendly bushland walking tracks, your pet will be as rejuvenated as you after a holiday of beach swims and bushland walks. It’s a pleasure to see families taking the time to be with their pets whether it’s roaming around during our events at Willinga Park, or enjoying our unspoilt dog friendly beaches. The Shoalhaven pet friendly areas go beyond beaches, park, rivers and trails to unique stays, adventures and cafés for an unrivalled selection for your family companion. We will continue to pioneer pet friendly activities including the development of the Willinga Park Equestrian Centre to ensure all pets, whether a dog or horse, feel welcome. Pet Friendly Shoalhaven The Shoalhaven is recognised as one of Australia’s leading pet friendly destinations. Our unique mix of accommodation and activities offers many experiences for you and your pet to enjoy together, use this guide to help you plan ahead or call our Visitor Centre on 02 4421 0778 for help building your itinerary. When it comes to walkies, there are many picturesque on and off leash areas, beaches and pet friendly bush trails. If you feel like a bite or a tipple, there are pet friendly cafés, breweries and wineries too! The Shoalhaven is made up of 100 Beaches and 70% forest and wilderness, providing plenty of room for everyone to have a great time. Make sure you observe signage and if you do want to visit a National
Park while you’re here, pre-book your pet at one of our great doggy day cares so you can venture out and enjoy the biodiversity. There are plenty of bespoke experiences you can have with your pets, from camping with your horse, to stand up paddleboarding with your dog. Use the handy directory at the back of this guide for all your pet friendly holiday needs.

Off Leash Areas The Shoalhaven has some of the most picturesque off leash areas in New South Wales, where you can relax and run free with your dog. Be sure to plan your trip to include some of these great off leash areas. Some are designated off leash all day and others just in the early mornings and late afternoons. Either way, that shared time running free with your pup will make beautiful
holiday memories for both of you. Many locations have on site signage to clarify boundaries and times. If in doubt check Council’s off leash guide at shoalhaven.com/pets to be sure you’re doing the right thing. And don’t forget the doggy bags!

Sharing the Shore Did you know that beach nesting birds are some of the most threatened in the world? By simply following a few guidelines with your pet you can have a huge impact on their survival. Disturbance to these birds can be lethal, the perceived threat of unleashed dogs causing them to leave the eggs or hiding the chicks for dangerously long periods.
You and your pet can help by: • Sharing the shoreline by respecting ‘Dog Prohibited’ beach zones. These areas are designated as prohibited because vulnerable shorebirds nest here between August and April each year.

• Making use of Council’s numerous off leash dog beaches, specially designated for off leash fun! • Keeping your dog on a leash on permitted beaches. Beach nesting birds and chicks perceive unleashed dogs as a great threat. Even if your dog isn’t the type to chase, the birds don’t know that! • Look out for temporary signs that alert you to the presence of nesting birds or chicks. • If you see little birds running swiftly along the beach or hear the larger oystercatchers calling out, please give these birds space. Sleep Under Stars The Shoalhaven offers some great bush camping with your dog. On reserves and state forest, as well as some cool coastal spots and charming towns. For a hinterland bush adventure, Shallow Crossing Camping Ground near East Lynne offers pet friendly sites right beside the Clyde River surrounded by three different state forests. You and your four legged friend can walk the trails together, swim in the river and eat your dinner beside a fire. Another great bush spot is Yadboro Flat, in a state forest on the Clyde River, 30km south-west of Milton. Pack some firewood for the barbeques and plenty of drinking water for you and your four legged mate. While this is a popular starting point for climbers of The Castle, be aware that dogs are not allowed into National Park surrounding the campground.
When heading into the bush be prepared! Check conditions and warnings directly with the relevant authority before heading out.

If you prefer to be closer to town Jervis Bay Holiday Park in Woollamia has pet friendly sites beside Currambene Creek, where you and your pet are invited to take a dip. There’s a shared camp fire as well as lots of facilities including a camp kitchen and pedal cart hire. Nearby Huskisson has lots of eateries and activities. Grady’s Riverside Retreat in the dairy pastures of Burrier has grassy sites beside the Shoalhaven River. Cook on your own fire or use the camp kitchen and other tidy facilities. You’ll feel like you’re in the country with the township of Nowra only a short drive away. Palm Beach Caravan Park in Sanctuary Point has camping sites for people with small dogs only. Facilities include wood fired bbqs, a camp kitchen and a community fridge. Perfectly located for walks along the Basin Foreshore Walk. Glenmack Park in pretty Kangaroo Valley has pet friendly camping beside a paddock of alpacas and horses. Bring your own brazier, or there’s a camp kitchen as well as lots of other great facilities. If you’re looking for a coastal camp, Kioloa Beach Holiday Park has plenty of shady unpowered sites although no fires are allowed here. If you can’t imagine camping without a fire, Merry Beach Caravan Park will hire you a brazier for their lovely beachfront sites. Spend your days at Cormorant Beach for 24 hour off leash doggie heaven. Surfside Cudmirrah Beach has pet friendly camping with direct access to Cudmirrah Beach, BYO brazier for a fire. For more creature comforts, Kings Point Retreat in Ulladulla has pet friendly campsites with brand new ensuite style bathrooms. There are two beaches in Ulladulla where you can play with your buddy off leash at any time of the day or night – Collers and Ulladulla Harbour North. Dog friendly camping is available at many Holiday Haven Parks outside peak season and holiday periods, including at Kangaroo Valley, Burrill Lake and Lake Tabourie where you can also have a fire. Whether its a top class boarding kennel or a doggy day care, when you want to step out your pet need never be left alone when in the Shoalhaven! For a relaxing break with your equine buddy, ride, camp and swim in natural bush landscapes and pristine waterways at Calymea Farm within Barringella. In lush green fields east of Nowra, Terara Park, a renovated equine centre has charming farm stay accommodation for you and your pony. Social dining venue The Garden Berry has an open-air courtyard for your pets to stay by your side while you enjoy a seasonal culinary experience with a cocktail or your daily caffeine fix in hand. The General Café keeps it interesting with an ever-changing brunch to lunch menu with a leafy verandah for you and your pet to enjoy a truly local feel in Kangaroo Valley. For our vegetarian visitors you would have heard of fan favourite Pilgrims Milton who boast a 100% meat-free menu serving up mouth drooling salad burgers. To show your pup a classic country pub experience The Shoalhaven Heads Hotel and The Berry Hotel are fur friendly for the South Coast schnitty you’ve been craving. Are you a vino lover? Adventure Pets The Shoalhaven has a number of tours and activities your pets are welcome to join. From high sea on horseback to stand up paddle boarding with your dog, there is a lot you can do together. Want to explore some calm waterways or learn to stand up paddleboard with your dog alongside? You can book a session with Sussex Inlet SUP who will match the location with your experience and make sure you and your pup have a great time. You can hire a canoe and paddle the Shoalhaven River for the day at Grady’s Riverside Retreat. Head upstream for mild rapids or downstream for calm waters, or jump in the river for a refreshing swim and relax on the sandy beaches along the banks of the property. Book a guided eco-walk along the river’s edge and tranquil casuarina forest of Fishermans Paradise with Kotahi Tours. Your dog is welcome to come along and sniff out some picturesque spots. For a bit of retail therapy, stroll through the pretty gardens at Jindy Andy Mill, and explore the shops operating in the historic buildings, or enjoy refreshments at Greendale’s Cafe overlooking the dairy cows. If your hoofed buddy needs a neighcation, book a food, wine and riding tour with Eqwine Escapes in Kangaroo Valley. You and your beloved pet will head home with some amazing memories and hopefully some new goodies from a spot of local shopping too!

Holiday Tips Travelling with your pet can take a little more planning and organisation. Here’s a few tips to make your holiday safe and fun for everyone. p Book your accommodation ahead of time and double check the details of their pet friendly policy. p Plan how your pet will fit with your human holiday activities, book kennels or doggy day care ahead, and have your dog’s paperwork handy.
p Make sure you have flea and tick protection - Australian paralysis tick is common, especially in bush areas in the warmer months. p Pack plenty of doggy bags to clean up any mess. p Please check your pets details with your local council. Ensure microchip details are up to date with the correct phone number. p Attach an ID tag with your mobile number to your pet’s collar.

Protect your dog by keeping him under close supervision at all times. p Businesses welcome pets at their discretion, be the pet and pet parent team who set an example by being considerate and tidy.
Do The Right Thing In the interest of people’s comfort, health and safety and the protection of flora and fauna, a number of restrictions apply to pets in the Shoalhaven City Council area. Take care to follow these guidelines to avoid fines. Dogs in the Shoalhaven must be kept ‘on leash’ at all times EXCEPT when in an off leash area. Pet owners are required to comply with the off leash boundaries and off leash times in the Shoalhaven.
• Recreation areas where dogs are prohibited • Public bathing areas where dogs are prohibited (including a beach) • School grounds (other than any property used for a residence)
Dogs must be under the control of a competent person at all times.
