he Shoalhaven trail winds its way around the region, from Berry, to Kangaroo Valley, out to the coast, into the hinterland and close to our southern border. It guides the visitor on a journey filled with delights and surprises around every corner.

Visit one of our restaurants and cafés that have received awards for their cuisine and flawless service. A huge range of tastes are catered for from Indian, Italian, contemporary Australian to Asian and fusion flavours.

If your preference is to spread a blanket on a stretch of grass, we even have specialists who will prepare a basket of goodies to ensure your al fresco experience is perfect.

There are several cooking schools in the region, so if you’re looking for a hands-on experience, get into the act and learn some new skills in a fun atmosphere.

As you continue your indulgence pilgrimage along the Shoalhaven trail, you will encounter over ten winery cellar doors, all offering samples of the region’s top drops, including some new varieties.

A recent newcomer is our nano brewery, HopDog, located at South Nowra.

From Berry to the southern border, you’ll be amazed by the variety and quality of the produce offered at farmgates. Explore Kangaroo Valley for olives, citrus and sweet goodies, hop over to Berry to check out Locavore Friday, a sweet treat or dairy products from our own happy cows. Several of our farmgates offer superb, seasonal fruits and vegetables and you can indulge in certified biodynamic produce in Milton.

Here on the South Coast, we’re known for our seafood, and lovers of the ocean’s bounty will not be disappointed with the offerings, from iconic oysters at Greenwell Point to fish at Currarong and Ulladulla Harbour.

The trail leads to our cultural treasures including the Bundanon and Riversdale properties, gifted to the people of Australia by Arthur and Yvonne Boyd.

Bundanon is open to the public each Sunday with bookings through the Shoalhaven Visitor Centre.

Shoalhaven City Arts Centre in Nowra has four exhibition galleries featuring works by local, national and often international artists.

Up and down the coast, there are a host of galleries and museums showcasing the art and heritage of the region.

The South Coast has a rich Indigenous history with opportunities for visitors to experience first-hand cultural experiences, including Galamban’s amazing Spotlight Stroll at Booderee National park or enjoy some bushfire yarns and bush tucker.

Music lovers are not forgotten with a great program of options in all areas, from classical to alternative to pub rock. If jazz is your thing, you might be lucky to hear The Escalators in Ulladulla on the first Sunday of each month.

We all love to celebrate and our Shoalhaven city puts on some great festivals. Ulladulla has Escape ArtFest each year as well as the much loved Blessing of the Fleet. Kangaroo Valley shines every two years with its Arts in the Valley and Jervis Bay’s See Change Winter Arts festival always attracts large crowds. Our wineries go on show in the annual Shoalhaven Coast Wine Festival over the June long weekend.

hey say a good (and fun) way to get a real feel for a region is to taste the wines it produces. And fortunately we’ve got a good variety on offer. The

Shoalhaven wine-growing region stretches south to Durras with 20 vineyards and 11 cellar doors to choose from. With its high summer rainfall, humidity and sea breezes, the region’s favourite grape is chambourcinn

Both these estates have restored their early buildings, which add a strong character to their cellar doors and tasting rooms.

The first serious viticulture in the region commenced back in the 1980s with Coolangatta Estate, followed by Jasper Valley Wines and Silos Estate and Cambewarra Estate vines were planted in the early 1990s. Later new

Vintages 2004, 2005, 2006 and 2008 have all won Best Dry Red Wine (Chambourcin) in local wine shows and recently Luke Mangan featured its wines in his cookbook, At Home and in the Mood. Also available is a range of goodies made from produce grown on the estate.

BERRY Morrellis Wines Morellis Wines is nestled in one of the many peaceful and untouched valleys in the Shoalhaven, a 4.5 kilometre drive from Berry township. JASPERS BRUSH Silos Estate Silos Estate produces a range of premium wines that emphasise the unique characteristics of the Shoalhaven region while its Wileys Creek label sources fruit from other wine-growing regions in Australia. COOLANGATTA Coolangatta Estate A family-owned winery, Coolangatta Estate has become the largest wine producer in the Shoalhaven, the most awarded winery on the South Coast of NSW and the Shoalhaven’s only five-star winer. To October 2011, Coolangatta Estate Wines had won 127 trophies and over 1400 wine awards at regional, national and international wine shows. All wine is made from nine varieties of grapes grown on the estate,

including semillon, savagnin, tannat and tempranillo.

Mountain Ridge Wines is set on a 30-hectare working farm that produces beef, macadamia nuts, limes and free-range eggs. The winery employs traditional winemaking practices and all the wines are processed on the property.

BACK FOREST Two Figs Winery Two Figs winery sits at the top of one of Mount Coolangatta’s foothills and offers a breath-taking view of the Shoalhaven River and beyond. The vineyard was planted in 2003 and the winery now produces wines including cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, chambourcin and verdelho. The Two Figs Chardonnay was awarded “Best Wine Made in a Shoalhaven Coast Winery”.

BANGALEE Cambewarra Estate Cambewarra Estate produces a range of premium wines from grapes grown in the vineyard. Hand picking, the optimum northerly aspect and good drainage all contribute to the success of the wines and the awards achieved.

The chamboucin won a bronze medal in its first vintage in 1994 and has continued to accumulate many gold, silver and bronze medals in significant wine shows. Cambewarra Estate won the first gold medal awarded in Australia for its Chamboucin Port and has also won a national trophy for the Cabernet Sauvignon.

Situated 20 minutes south west of Kangaroo Valley and 15 kilometres from Nowra, the winery has been developed over 15 years with the first vines planted in 1994. From vine to bottle, totally produced on the premises, the organic wine contains no chemicals and is spray and preservative free. Chambourcin and port available at cellar door.

The winery makes a selection of boutique wines from grapes grown on the estate and from other locations around NSW. Wines are available for tasting and purchase from the winery’s cellar door and restaurant. Winemaker, Rosie Cupitt brings over ten years’ experience and brings a European influence to the wine making. The wines are matured in an underground wine cave where everything from fermenting to barrelling is done.

Situated 2.2 kilometres from the Princes Highway on the right-hand side of BTU Road and close to Nowra Hill Lookout, the winery has stunning views of the Shoalhaven area. HopDog’s brewer, Tim Thompson, has been brewing beer for 12 years, starting out at Lord Nelson in Sydney’s Rocks area and then in the then Five Islands Brewery in Wollongong, now operating as Illawarra Brewing Company.

HopDog BeerWorks is a 200-litre nano-brewery. The beers are uncompromised, unfiltered, unadulterated and bottle conditioned.

HopDog can be purchased from the brewery door or retail from local bottle shops, restaurants and hotels. HopDog supplies wholesale beer in bottles and kegs.

In association with The Hungry Duck Restaurant in Berry, HopDog is about to release a Belgian-style ale, The Thirsty Duck, which will complement the restaurant’s cuisine. Using spices from chef David Campbell’s own garden, the beer will be paired with a Japaneseinspired pub menu.

Louise Tucker has been passionate about growing food sustainably for a long time and in 2009 began to prepare two acres of local ground for her own market garden.

Now, as Merry Maidens’ Veggies and Wholefood Store in Milton, Louise sells her fully certified Demeter Biodynamic produce to customers in the Southern Shoalhaven. The biodynamic system is a natural and wholistic method requiring no pesticides, herbicides or artificial fertilisers, instead working with natural life processes. Biodynamic gardening keeps the soil healthy and happy, resulting in healthy, nutritious and flavoursome produce.

The market garden produces a wealth of veggies and herbs including basil, shallots, radish, beetroot, salad mix, silver beet, rocket and coriander with plans to grow asparagus, celery and rainbow chard as well as leeks, garlic, raspberries and strawberries.

The shop is located at the corner of Myrtle Street and Princes Highway in Milton, and has become a meeting place for other local growers to learn and discuss sustainable farming methods. “It is our vision to continue to share knowledge and soon offer home gardening workshops, food tasting days and information sessions,” says Louise. “I would like to see hundreds more people using their land to grow high-quality food to supply the local community as well as restaurants.”

Louise is heartened by the support of the local community and currently supplies her organic produce to Kioloa’s Merry Street Restaurant and Bar, the well-known Pilgrims in Milton and others.

he Shoalhaven River winds its way through rugged sandstone gorges, rolling pastures and native forests. A diverse community of artists respond to this unique environment, creating traditional and contemporary works that reflect the spirit of the city.

Arthur Boyd is known for his many works that featured the beauty of the Shoalhaven River and, today, it continues to inspire artists, craftspeople and writers.

Together with the spectacular landscapes, the city is blessed with art galleries, museums and organisations dedicated to showcasing visual arts and enriching the sense of community. The Bundanon and Riversdale properties, Arthur and Yvonne Boyd’s gift to the Australian people, offer educational and entertainment events combined with a strong artist-inresidence program to foster creativity both in the local community as well as nationally and internationally.

For almost a decade now, the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre, a Regional Gallery, has attracted exhibitions from renowned Australian and international artists while showcasing works from the best of the region’s artists. The Centre has hosted poetry and music performances and continues to develop strong bonds with the community.

Other significant museums are the Lady Denman Heritage Complex, featuring the Jervis Bay Gallery of Science and the Sea at Huskisson, Meroogal in Nowra and the Fleet Air Arm at HMAS Albatross. These major galleries and museums, combined with a host of private and commercial galleries showing contemporary arts, ceramics, timber and other crafts, ensure the City of Shoalhaven is more than an idyllic natural environment, but also an important and vibrant cultural destination.

cultural treasures When iconic Australian artist Arthur Boyd first visited Bundanon in 1971, he painted a small oil study of the river. He recalled that first intense experience, “I can remember the day vividly. It was so hot and searing the oil ran from the palette onto the sand …

I remember the heat was terrifying.”

hen they returned to England, the Boyds asked one of Bundanon’s then owners to look out for a similar property on the river. It wasn’t long before they were the owners of Riversdale, described by Yvonne as “this glorious hillside with its deserted cottage”. In 1975, they were living in the restored Riversdale cottage surrounded by antique furniture brought back from England.

The couple then acquired and made their Australian home at Bundanon when the property became available in 1979.

Arthur recognised it as a place where his family collection could be preserved.

While in Australia, Arthur and Yvonne lived in the sandstone and cedar two-storey homestead built in 1866 with its cottage garden, tall pines and romantic lake. In 1981, Arthur had his studio built at the end of the garden overlooking paddocks towards the bush and river.

Many other artists visited and worked at Bundanon, including Sir Sidney Nolan, Brett Whiteley, Robert Dickerson and poet Peter Porter.

When Arthur and Yvonne offered Bundanon and Riversdale to the people of Australia, they envisaged a haven of creativity for diverse groups including Aboriginal people, school groups, Australian and overseas artists and the general public on open days. They wanted all the arts to prosper, including drama, dance, sculpture, jazz and classical music.

Along with the gift of the Bundanon and Riversdale properties was a collection of thousands of artworks, photographs, furnishings and documents. Included in the collection are works by several members of the Boyd family, Sir Sidney Nolan, Joy Hester, John Perceval, Charles

Blackman, Leonard French, Brett Whiteley and others.

Visitors to the properties can see the art at the homestead and Education Centre. From time to time, the Trust holds exhibitions and loans works to other organisations.

Each year, the artist-in-residence program hosts individual artists or small groups in a variety of art forms to live and work in the artists’ centre.

Glenn Murcutt, Pritzker Architecture Prize Laureate in 2002, designed the Riversdale Education Centre with Wendy Lewin and Reg Lark. In 1999, the design won the Sulman Award for public architecture.

With a deep sensitivity for the landscape and climate, Murcutt achieves a structure that complements the surrounding environment. East-facing windows give sweeping views of the river and students awake to the raucous sounds of the dawn chorus.

Students live the artist’s life during their visits to both at Bundanon and Riversdale.

Bundanon is open to the public every Sunday 10.30am – 4pm. Visits include tours of the Bundanon Homestead and Arthur Boyd’s studio.

Exhibitions feature works from national, private and regional collections, the Shoalhaven City Collection, curated exhibitions by Shoalhaven artisans and community.

The Shoalhaven City Arts Centre is a proud part of the Regional Gallery Network of NSW and has exhibited works from Australian and international artists such as Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Robert Dickerson, Max Dupain, David Hockney and Adam Cullen, to name a few. Other significant exhibitions include shows held in conjunction with Bundanon, the annual Shoalhaven Art Society Open Art Prize exhibition and the bi-annual Meroogal Women’s Art Prize exhibition during September.

The Shoalhaven City Art Collection has grown over the past 40 years into a substantial collection containing excellent examples of Australian art by Arthur Boyd, William Robinson, Max Dupain, David Voigt, Dennis Adams and a large collection of late 1800s watercolours and photographs by Samuel Elyard. Of particular significance is the generous bequest of the M.G.Dingle and G.B.Hughes collection of Australian abstract works, collected over a period of 50

years. The Arts Centre regularly has exhibitions from the collection curated by Max Dingle.

The City Collection also contains a strong regional and Shoalhaven representation including works by John Edward, Leonard Long, Suzanne Chick, Jim Birkett, Trudi Last, Paul Dimmer, 12 Shoalhaven Aboriginal linocut prints and watercolours and drawings by war artist Clarrie Payne. The Collection has been developed to enhance, enrich and educate as well as stimulate awareness and appreciation of visual arts practice in contemporary Australia and the Shoalhaven.

Meroogal

A

much-loved home of four generations of women from the same family, the historic house museum, Meroogal, has hundreds of stories to tell from the multitude of belongings and objects left by each generation.

The items on display include furniture, household objects, diaries, letters, scrapbooks, photographs and clothes, which give visitors a insight into a more private world of the family.

Meroogal is a two-storey Gothic-revival weatherboard cottage, built on stone foundations, featuring verandas and balconies. The internal walls are wallpapered, the ceilings are panelled and the staircase is made of cedar.

The house is surrounded by a picket fence and two large jacaranda trees shade the garden.

Since Historic Houses Trust acquired Meroogal, the garden has been restored to its 1920s appearance with the fences and flowerbeds being reconstructed and many perennial and annual plants re-introduced.

T

he Museum consists of a large main facility, based on the design of an aircraft hangar, located within the heritage precinct at the entrance to HMAS ALBATROSS. As well as galleries, there is also a museum souvenir and gift shop.

The Aviation Collection is a world standard exhibition.

Over 25 fixed wing aircraft and helicopters, some now quite rare, are displayed alongside a wide range of unique naval aviation related artefacts. These include piston and jet engines, aircraft ordnance and relics from the days of operating from the flight decks of aircraft carriers at sea.

The “Wings Over Water” exhibition tells the story of Naval Aviation in Australia, with aircraft from the 20th Century, ranging from a World War 1 Sopwith Pup to a A4 Skyhawk jet fighter. The exhibition also includes examples of allied and foreign aircraft, like the MiG-17 fighter. Showcases and audio-visual displays add to the stories of these aircraft and those who flew and maintained them.

The Museum’s Flight Simulator provides a virtual experience, for all ages, on what it is like in the pilot’s seat.

Lady Denman Heritage Complex

T

he Lady Denman Heritage Complex (also known as the Lady Denman Maritime Museum) was inspired by the former Sydney ferry, Lady Denman, which was built in Huskisson in 1911. The ferry is now on display in a purposebuilt facility within the Complex.

The Complex also features the Jervis Bay Gallery of Science and the Sea which contains a collection of diverse treasures, a Surveyor’s Gallery displaying a world-standard collection of surveying instruments, a Local History Gallery and a wide range of interesting objects connected with the history of this area on Jervis Bay. There is also a marine environment gallery and a large gallery which hosts a variety of local and national travelling exhibitions.

The Complex occupies a 10-hectare bushland and wetland site on the shores of Jervis Bay and Currambene Creek that includes a diversity of natural environments.

The popular Fish Pond is home to a number of fish species including tailor, snapper, kingfish, bream, mullet, flathead, flounder and stingrays.

The Mangrove Boardwalk takes visitors through the mangroves on a raised walkway out to the margins of Currambene Creek, offering the opportunity to gain an understanding of wetlands, mangrove swamps and the interaction between ocean and land environments.

There are picnic and BBQ facilities, provided together with disabled and guide dog access.

In 2000 Doonooch were part of the Olympic Games Opening Ceremonies and were feature performers at the World Indidgenous Forum in Noumea.

ART & CRAFT LADDIE TIMBERY’S WORKSHOP Laddie is a respected Koori elder from the Eora Nation. His people are the Bidjigal clan, which span from La Perouse, Botany Bay, down through the South Coast regions of NSW and known as the Yuin Nation. He belongs to the Dharawal language group which goes from Sydney to Jervis Bay, where his family currently live and produce artwork and artefacts, which are available from the workshop.
