BENDALONG, NORTH BENDALONG, MANYANA, BERRINGER LAKE & CUNJURONG POINT Borderering the Conjola National Park, Bendalong provides excellent surf beaches for fishing and swimming. To the north of Bendalong and an easy walk along the beach is the monument to the wreck of the Walter Hood – a ship that went down in 1870. South are Monument Beach, Flat Rock Beach and Dee Beach. Washerwomans Beach is a long stretch popular for families. The area around the boat ramp is renowned for the large stingrays that come in close to shore. Other beaches are Shell Grit Beach, One Tree Beach and the long sweeping surf beach, Inyadda.
LAKE CONJOLA Lake Conjola is located at the southern side of the mouth of the Lake Conjola estuary. The expansive waterways are ideal for fishing, swimming, boating and in the warmer months, good prawning on the northern shores. Take the boardwalk (suitable for wheelchair access) at Lake Conjola for a pleasant 15 minutes walk to the beach. Stop at the viewing platform along the way for excellent panoramic views of both beach and lake. Head along the gravel road to the Boyd Lookout for spectacular views of Lake Conjola and beaches to the south. Here there are good facilities with picnic tables, barbecue and toilets.
MILTON The charming township of Milton, with its arts and craft stores, excellent cafes and restaurants, unique designer shops and quality accommodation has long been a favourite with visitors and provides a great base for exploring the local attractions. The town was established in 1860 and its character is enhanced by its many historic buildings and the entire town has been classified by the National Trust as an historic village.
ULLADULLA Over time, Ulladulla Harbour has played an important role in the development of the area, serving as a port for the early pioneering trades of sawmilling, farming, and a tannery. Today the harbour shelters local leisure craft and a fleet of commercial trawlers. Ulladulla is renowned for its seafood and the local co-operative is a great place to buy fish “fresh from the boat”. A time-honoured custom of the local Italian/Australian fishers is the colourful Blessing of the Fleet ceremony held on the harbour each Easter. Trawlers are decorated and blessed in a carnival, family atmosphere, all capped off with a spectacular fireworks display over the harbour. Ulladulla’s annual Food and Wine Festival by the Sea and

the annual Escape Art Fest both lend colour and character to the area’s attractions.
NARRAWALLEE Narrawallee, just to the north of Ulladulla and close to Mollymook, boasts two superb beaches for great surfing, swimming and boating activities, as well as picnic grounds with fresh water, barbecue and toilet facilities. There is also a gravel boat ramp for light boat situated in Normandy Street into Narrawallee Inlet. Scenic coastal views can be seen from several lookouts that take in panoramic views both north and south.
MOLLYMOOK Situated between Milton and Ulladulla, Mollymook’s stunning beachside location is complemented by golf courses and a good selection of accommodation, many enjoying outstanding views over the beach and ocean, and all within a few minutes’ walk to the sea. The main beach is sheltered and good for swimming and for surfers, a short drive north to Bannisters Point and Narrawallee Beach will offer excellent conditions. The ‘Bogey Hole’, a large rock pool on Mollymook Headland, is a tidal pool and ideal for families with young children. It offers safe snorkeling and is a great spot for a picnic.
BURRILL LAKE The scenically beautiful township of Burrill Lake, five kilometres south of Ulladulla between the beach and the lake, is surrounded by natural bushland. Its unspoiled beauty provides excellent fishing spots and safe boating,

sailing and windsurfing. Boats, canoes, skis and kayaks are available for hire. The upper reaches of the lake are via the Kings Point access road, west off the highway where the lake is usually deep, quiet and tranquil, with water skiing at weekends and during holiday periods.
TABOURIE LAKE Situated 13 kilometres south of Ulladulla, Tabourie Lake offers peace, tranquillity and magificent unspoiled beach and lake frontage. It is a haven for native birds and and a great spot to swim, fish, canoe or picnic. The lake is mostly suited to flatbottomed non-motorised boats. For rock fishermen the rugged beauty of nearby Crampton Island is a popular spot to catch dinner.
BAWLEY POINT Bawley Point, between Meroo and Murramarang National Parks, is a perfect destination for bush walks. Visit Mimosa Hill Farm, a wildflower and protea farm on Bawley Point Road. Other local Bawley Point tourism attractions and facilities include the Dulkara Picture Framing and Wildlife Gallery, the cafe and the shopping centre. Nearby beaches include Bawley Point Beach itself as well as Shell Beach, Racecourse Beach, Merry Beach, Pretty Beach and Pebbly Beach. The beaches offer scuba diving, snorkelling, swimming, surfing, fishing and boating.
KIOLOA The quiet seaside town of Kioloa, south of Ulladulla and just north of Pretty and Merry Beaches, retains much of its natural beauty and is surrounded by water and bushland. Protected from the Pacific Ocean by Belowla Island, it is just minutes to some of the best beaches, lakes and fishing spots on the coast and a short drive will take you into Murramarang National Park.
Pebbly Beach. Photo Sally Mayman; Destination NSW
PEBBLY BEACH Pebbly Beach is known widely as the home of the “surfing kangaroos”, a myth arising from a photograph of a kangaroo in low surf. However, you will find a large resident kangaroo population at Pebbly quite happy to be patted or to pose for a photograph, but please don’t feed. Pebbly Beach is a popular camping area with great surfing and bush walks within the park. Banksias, coastal rosemary and lomandra grow on the exposed headlands buffeted by salty sea winds. Look out for sea eagles soaring above, sooty oystercatchers along the shore and dolphins riding the waves out to sea.
DEPOT BEACH Depot Beach, located in the heart of Murramarang National Park south of Ulladulla, is a great place for a camping holiday or a day’s relaxation with its beautiful surf beach, great fishing, towering spotted gum forest, fascinating walks and abundant wildlife. Numerous eastern grey kangaroos are permanent residents. Behind the beach, explore the majestic spotted gum forests, with their understory of spiky burrawangs. During the day you may see goannas basking in the sun and a rich variety of birds including parrots and honeyeaters. At night ringtail possums, yellow-bellied and greater gliders feed in the forest canopies.
NORTH DURRAS Surrounded by the Murramarang National Park, North Durras is situated on the entrance to the sea of Lake Durras, widely regarded as the most pristine coastal waterway in NSW. The entrance of the lake to the sea is made through a vast area of clear sandy pools which are a delight for children and all who enjoy swimming in still waters. Yet only a hundred metres or so away is the magnificent Durras Beach, one of the best on the coast.

You can see the distinctive outline of Pigeon House Mountain Didthul against the horizon from miles away as you travel throughout the Shoalhaven. At 719 metres above sea level, the peak was named by Captain Cook in 1770 as the Endeavour sailed up the coast, because Cook considered the peak resembled the shape of a dovecote. The local Indigenous people had always called the mountain Didthul, so now it bears dual names. Drive off the Princes Highway either from Milton or south of Burrill Lake onto Wheelbarrow Road, around 30 kilometres. The gravel road passes through forests of spotted gum, bloodwood and silvertop ash to arrive at the base of the walking track, a picnic area with tables, barbeque and toilet facilities. The return walk to the summit takes around four hours and is in four stages with the first part a steep 800 metres, then a flat kilometre followed by a steep 500 metre climb and then onto a series of steel ladders attached to the cliff face. Around 8000 people climb Pigeon House Mountain Didthul each year to experience the exhilaration of the climb and the reward of the magnificent views from the summit. Spread out below are rugged cliffs and gorges carved out by the Clyde River and its tributaries, as well as Byangee Walls and The Castle. On a clear day, you can see as far to the north as Point Perpendicular and Mount Dromedary in the south. If you’re planning to drive out to Pigeon House Mountain Didthul, it’s suggested you first check with the visitors centre on the condition of the road.

Man from Kangaroo Valley horseride
out & about
active or laidback
Whatever your fitness or skill level, the Shoalhaven offers visitors a host of outdoor activities. There are a myriad of opportunities to indulge in your favourite water sport or to take the plunge and try something new. Diving and snorkelling sites offer fascinating marine life with several wrecks around for the more adventurous. There are dive shops in major centres and fully qualified diving schools providing dive courses and packages. You can learn to surf, sail, windsurf, waterski, or ride a wakeboard with qualified instructors or you can hire catamarans and boards for independent sailing and windsurfing. For an exciting experience, enjoy a sea kayaking trip around Jervis Bay. Inland, canoe or kayak down the river at Kangaroo Valley or upstream from Nowra on the Shoalhaven River. If you’re into equestrian activities, why not explore the high mountain country of Kangaroo Valley on horse back, a trail ride at Falls Creek or Termeil. Experienced riding schools conduct lessons and guided rides in most areas. The Bay & Basin Leisure Centre offers a fitness centre, indoor pools, water slide, spa, crèche, café and sports shop. In the southern areas, the Ulladulla Leisure Centre offers aquatic and leisure activities. There are several other pool complexes throughout the city, ask the Visitors Information Centre for details.

Dolphin watching cruises operate on Jervis Bay, leaving Huskisson daily, with whale watching a popular activity from June to November. You can cruise the majestic Shoalhaven River to see for yourself what the fuss is about. If you prefer, you can sail, snorkel, swim or dolphin watch on purpose-built boats for day charter on Jervis Bay. Fisher folk are well catered for with charter boats operating out of major centres. Try your hand at deep sea fishing or discover game, sport estuary and reef bottom fishing. For those who are at home in the tree canopy or simply want to check it out, the tree adventure course at North Nowra will have you swinging, leaping, climbing and flying through the forest. Flying foxes zip between trees and there are cargo nets, rope bridges and wooden obstancles – high above the ground. The courses become increasingly difficult as you climb higher into the canopy, which means that you can find the right level to suit you. If you enjoy a round of golf, you’ll find courses at Kangaroo Valley, Shoalhaven Heads, Coolangatta, Nowra, Worrigee, Callala Beach, Vincentia, St Georges Basin, Sussex Inlet and Mollymook. There are mini golf courses at East Nowra and Huskisson.

whales … up close As if the gorgeous beaches, beautiful scenery, and fantastic community events weren’t enough incentive to visit the Shoalhaven, there’s the added display of playful whales each year from June to November. These majestic creatures are the greatest travellers on the planet and those who are lucky enough to get up close and personal describe an intensely moving experience. The calm waters of Jervis Bay make ideal conditions for viewing these beautiful creatures up close. The Bay provides mothers and their calves with a place to rest and have a little play on the return leg of their journey. Some of the finest whale watching in New South Wales can be seen here in the Shoalhaven, either by going out in search of whales on a tour, or through the many vantage points throughout the Shoalhaven. Penguin Head at Culburra, the old ruined lighthouse at Booderee National Park and the Ulladulla Lighthouse on Warden Street, Ulladulla are great places to track whale activity. Visit www.wild aboutwhales.com.au or download the app to stay up to date with whale movements via the interactive map and find out about planned whale discovery tours during whale season. history In December 1797, George Bass, sailing down the coast in a whaleboat with six seamen, discovered the mouth of a river. He disliked the entrance so much that he named it Shoals-Haven. It has been established that Bass named the mouth of the Crookhaven River with the name later assumed by the great Shoalhaven River. Thus the early Settlers of Sydney learned of the district around the Shoalhaven. As land around Sydney was taken up, the Shoalhaven was further explored and surveyed. New land was needed for the expanding settlement. The Scotsman Alexander Berry explored the Shoalhaven District in January 1822, looking for land on which to settle. Berry settled permanently at Coolangatta on the north bank of the Shoalhaven River. Other members of his family from Scotland joined him later. With his partner, Edward Wollstonecraft, Berry took up land grants of 10,000 acres, and Shoalhaven’s modern history began. In August of 1846, Berry’s schooner, the Coolangatta was wrecked between Point Danger and Cut Hill, Queensland. This place still bears the name of Coolangatta, linking the Gold Coast and the Shoalhaven with an historical tie. The anchor of the Coolangatta serves as a monument by the beach at Queensland’s Coolangatta. In the early days, Shoalhaven was noted for the timber that encouraged logging to supply the need for sleepers for the early railways. Wool and wheat, as well as fresh vegetables and fruit were shipped to Sydney from Jervis Bay Harbour. Goods were hauled from as far away as the Highlands and Jervis Bay was considered a rival port to Sydney Harbour. The Dent and Settree families from

Currambene Creek, Huskisson, pioneered shipbuilding. Built by the Dent family, the former Sydney Harbour Ferry, Lady Denman, is now at rest on the shores where she was built at Huskisson. She is now restored and on display under cover within the Lady Denman Heritage Complex. The history of the Southern Shoalhaven is recorded as far back as the voyage of Captain Cook, who recorded in his log on the 21 April 1770 that he had sighted a prominent landmark. Cook gave this feature a European name, ‘Pigeon House’ unaware of the name ‘Didthul’ given to it by the indigenous people. A note was also made that natives had been sighted on the beach of what is now called Bawley Point. Aboriginal middens still exist in this area. Alexander Berry, Hamilton Hume and Thomas Davidson made the first recorded ascent of the Pigeon House Mountain in 1822.

ARTS AND CULTURE
cultural treasures
A diverse community of artists respond in many ways to the unique landscape of the Shoalhaven, creating traditional and contemporary works that reflect the spirit of the city. Arthur Boyd is known for his many works that featured the beauty of the Shoalhaven River and, today, it continues to inspire artists, craftspeople, musicians, performances and writers. The city is blessed with art galleries, museums and organisations dedicated to showcasing visual arts and enriching the sense of community. The Bundanon and Riversdale properties, Arthur and Yvonne Boyd’s gift to the Australian people, offer educational and entertainment events combined with a strong artistin-residence program to foster creativity in the local community as well as nationally and internationally. For ten years, the Shoalhaven City Arts Centre, a Regional Gallery, has attracted exhibitions from renowned Australian and international artists while showcasing works from the best of the region’s
artists. The Centre has hosted poetry and music performances and continues to develop strong bonds with the community. Other significant museums are the Lady Denman Heritage Complex, featuring the Jervis Bay Gallery of Science and the Sea at Huskisson, Meroogal in Nowra and the Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross. These major galleries and museums, combined with a host of private and commercial galleries showing contemporary arts, ceramics, timber and other crafts, ensure the City of Shoalhaven is more than an idyllic natural environment, but also an important and vibrant cultural destination. See the Service Directory in the back section of this guide for a full list of museums and galleries.

WINE COAST
coastal drops They say a good (and fun) way to get a real feel for a region is to taste the wines it produces. And fortunately we’ve got a good variety on offer. The Shoalhaven wine-growing region stretches south to Durras with 20 vineyards and 11 cellar doors to choose from. With its high summer rainfall, humidity and sea breezes, the region’s favourite grape is chambourcin and other popular varieties produced here include chardonnay, verdelho, sauvignon blanc, semillon, cabernet sauvignon and shiraz. Alexander Berry planted the region’s first grapevines at Coolangatta Estate in the 1820s and during the 1870s, Silos Estate vines were established. Both these estates have restored their early buildings, which add a strong character to their cellar doors and tasting rooms. The first serious viticulture in the region commenced back in the 1980s with Coolangatta Estate, followed by Jasper Valley Wines and Silos Estate and Cambewarra Estate vines were planted in the early 1990s. Later new cellar

doors were opened at Two Figs, Mountain Ridge Wines, Kladis Estate, Cupitts, Nowra Hill Vineyard, Bawley Vale and Yarrawa Estate. Salet Wines at Currarong, identified by the French term – “garagiste” – produces boutique wines from handpicked fruit, using traditional methods. No visit to the Shoalhaven would be complete without a visit to at least one of our cellar doors to sample some of the award-winning drops. Each June long weekend, the Shoalhaven Coast Wine Festival offers visitors three days of fine wine and food. Cellar doors host various events from wine and cheese tastings, dinners, vineyard tours, winery talks, themed lunches, produce and market stalls and live entertainment in the vineyards. There’s a full list of Shoalhaven wineries in the service directory at the back of this guide.
LOCAL PRODUCE
the foodie trail Boutique producers are springing up all over the Shoalhaven. The lush, fertile land combined with passionate and adventurous producers results in a myriad of delicious produce on offer.
From the northern tip to the southern border, you’ll be amazed by the variety and quality of the produce offered at farmgates. Explore Kangaroo Valley for olives, citrus and sweet goodies, hop over to Berry to check out Locavore Friday, a sweet treat or dairy products from our own happy cows. Several of our farmgates offer superb, seasonal fruits and vegetables and you can indulge in certified biodynamic produce in Milton. In summer enjoy the lusciousness of stone fruit direct from the orchard. The intrepid foodie can independently explore the region to discover the delights of fresh berries and chestnuts. Don’t forget the gourmet preserves, relishes and chutneys made with love in the region. To really get the inside information, you can book an indulgent tour to uncover the gourmet secrets of the region. Here on the South Coast, we’re known for our seafood, and lovers of the ocean’s bounty will not be disappointed with the offerings, from iconic oysters at Greenwell Point to fish at Currarong and Ulladulla Harbour. Visitors and locals alike are invited to feast and forage around the countryside blessed with lush pastures that offer the best of dairy products and meat.
With over ten winery cellar doors, all offering samples of the region’s top wines, including some new varieties, you’ll be sure to find your new favourite drop. A recent newcomer to the scene is our nano brewery, HopDog, specialising in handcrafted, boundary pushing beers and is located at South Nowra. So kick back, stretch out under a tree on a picnic blanket and feast on a mouth-watering local produce spread for lunch. Afterwards have a little rest, savouring the delicious flavours of your lunch and watch the clouds roll by. Perfect. Turn to pages 56 and 57 to see where you can hunt down the best our region has to offer.
