DRIVE 8

ATTRACTIONS ALONG THE WAY This drive takes in Macquarie Pass, Robertson, Fitzroy Falls, Kangaroo Valley and Bomaderry. The three waterfalls on the route are Carrington Falls, Belmore Falls and Fitzroy Falls. There are great vantage points of the three falls from which to enjoy the view. You’ll find picnic facilities and toilets at Thomas Place, which offers excellent views of Carrington Falls from three nearby lookouts. Hindmarsh Lookout at Belmore Falls and Mannings Lookout at Fitzroy Falls also offer superb views. Next, up the winding road opens to the lush open fields and farmlets of Kangaroo Valley. Sitting like a mountain pocket, the Valley is fringed by towering mountains all around and has a naturally lush ecosystem that includes beautiful morning mists and an abundance of birdlife. Historic Kangaroo Valley village is charming and well geared for visitors, with art and souvenir galleries, several cafés, a delightful stone pub, some unique handicraft stores and plenty of good quality local holiday accommodation. Hampden Bridge, with its famous stone turrets, provides commanding views over the winding river below. Built over the Kangaroo River in 1898, it is the oldest suspension bridge in Australia and is Kangaroo Valley’s most famous and most photographed landmark. Adjacent to Hampden Bridge is Kangaroo Valley Pioneer Settlement Museum Park. This is of interest to visitors and educational groups for its collection of buildings, farm machinery, furniture, artefacts and house and personal items collected from the 19th century. Additionally there is a

Cambewarra Lookout

display of photographs of families from the Valley portraying how early Australian settlers and pioneers lived, worked and played. A hard surface pathway leads through the buildings and displays for wheelchair access which then leads onto two bushwalks and picnic facilities. Activities in the Kangaroo valley include some well graded bushwalks, cycling, canoeing (solo or escorted) and general relaxation. Another must see on the drive is Cambewarra Lookout, where you can take a detour which takes you along a scenic hillside climb to Cambewarra Mountain and Lookout to view some of the most spectacular scenery of the South Coast. If the wind is right, hangliders may be out sailing. The tearooms at the lookout provide a nice opportunity for a cup of coffee and a relaxing break. The drive finishes at Bomaderry (est. pop. 6,602) situated 4km north of Nowra. Bomaderry, predominantly a residential area, is the terminus of the NSW South Coast railway line. Visit the many sporting facilities and parks or enjoy a scenic bushwalk. Attractions nearby are the Shoalhaven Zoo, Meroogal Historic Homestead, the Fleet Air Arm Museum at HMAS Albatross, Shoalhaven River Cruises and bushwalks.
