ACKNOWLEDGMENT An integral part of my specialization here at NID, Image Making wouldn’t have been possible without the expertise from the faculty Dr. Tridha Gajjar. I am thankful to her for her valuable guidance during the module. I would thank my classmates for critically analyzing my work and giving feedback to improve my

COURSE OBJECTIVE To introduce the students to graphic simplification of visual form, integration of typographic elements in order to communicate verbal concepts. To learn to investigate various alternatives and possibilities, select a direction and resolve the problem of communication in a specific context.

Letter and Object Integration

Assignment 3 Object Simplification 14 Poster 19 Pictogram 20

ASSIGNMENT 1: LETTER INTEGRATION The assignment was to select any two letters (preferably the initials of your name) and choose typefaces for each as per the personality of the person and integrate them to make a balanced singular form without compromising on the identity of each letter.

Step 1: The chosen letters were Typeface: Perpetua

Typeface: Times New Roman

S

B

6

Step 2: Explorations

The initial explorations were merely me trying to put one letter form with another letter together or placing one letter onto another letter without much thinking about the form and the individual characteristics.

The design which was selected to work on. Further explorations about the form of letter ‘S’ and trying to set it along the form of the letter ‘B‘ were to carried out.

7

Step 3 Final form study

Explorations with the form of letter ‘S‘ were tried out to make both the letters be prominent with their own identity. The final thumbnail was then enlarged on a A3 sheet and refinements were made.

The starting of the letter S was cut so in order to make it look like it started from the form of the letter B.

Cutting down the form from the typeface to make a balance between the two letters.

The serifs were bolder to make the overall form of the letter more strong and balanced. 8

ASSIGNMENT 2: LETTER & OBJECT INTEGRATION The assignment aimed to select the initial of the first name of a person (preferably yours) and come up with an object either manmade or natural which would reflect the characteristic of that respective person.

Step 1: The chosen object was a dining

plate with fork and knife to represent the foodie along with the letter S.

S

Typeface: Eugiene 10

Step 2: Explorations

Earlier I tried to integrate a Wolf along with the letter S.

From the learnings in Assignment 1, the initial explorations were all tried to get the object fit into the form of the letter S. The positioning of the fork and knife also sent a different message, thereby chose something which goes with my characteristics. I now tried showing someone who doesn’t leave food in the plate or one who has completed having meals.

11

Step 3 Final form study

Different iterations to correct the placing of the form of S on the circular form of the dining plate were made. The typeface used for the letter S was then altered to geometrically interact with the dining plate. Corrections made after refining on an enlarged version in a A3 sheet.

The top and bottom part of the letter S were made circular to make it visually balanced.

Cut the letter in the top to make it parallel to the form flowing below. The space between the plate and outer S form was to be made thick.

The form of the S was to be made parallel to the circle of the plate making it visually balanced. The fork and the knife placed were added outlines to make it look raised thereby putting emphasis. 12

ASSIGNMENT 3: OBJECT SIMPLIFICATION The assignment was about selecting any subject or theme and find an object that could be used to represent the same either directly or indirectly. Once done, one had to simplify the object keeping it’s structure and form intact.

Step 1: The chosen theme was

domestic violence against women. A broken lipstick was chosen as the object to represent the theme

Step 2: Images of the Object

15

Step 3: Simplifying the object

Explorations of the tracing of images captured to simplify the object. The image had reflections from the surrounding which were omitted and being an object with shiny surface the reflections were added accordingly. 16

ASSIGNMENT 3: PICTOGRAM The assignment aimed to select the same object used in the Object Simplification part and visualize it in a two dimensional space and make a pictogram without losing the key characteristics.

Step 1: Understanding the shape of the object using basic shapes.

20

Step 2: The final form refined for the pictogram representation.
