Acknowledgement My experience here at NID as a student of Graphic Design has been an enriching learning experience with knowledge ready to get grabbed at each corner of the campus. Introduction to Design This was the first course of the semester, anchored by Mr. P Ramakrishna Rao and Sekhar Mukherjee together. The course was packed with talks and presentations by experts from the industry who shared their journey of experiences in the field of design which in a way was a great learning for all the students and in a way encouraged us to thrive and be one of them.
We were shown the critically acclaimed documentary series Design Trilogy by Gary Huswit starting with ‘Helvetica’ based on the famous typeface of the same name, ‘Objectified’ - based on industrial design and ‘Urbanized‘ - based on architecture and urban design.
Everyone talked around ‘What is Design?‘ for them and how have the term evolved over the period through their presentations, examples and works done by them. Each of these helped us to see how design can be used to fulfill needs and make lives better.

In the end as per my understanding throughout this course, I can say that Design is everywhere. Its what drives one to buy a certain product. It can be termed as a process or an activity which helps to bring ideas into something which can be made useful. The process of bringing the idea into work is what needs to be encouraged. It’s not necessary that the ideas need to be innovative or breath taking for the world. Even something which can fulfill a certain need, its the process that shall make the journey lead to an innovative product or service.
We were glad to have the following speakers during the one week course.
Being a designer also brings in a lot of challeneges as one cannot simply rely on creative instinct and instead needs to incorporate real world situations to come up solutions that the world can accept. It is all about satisfying the need of the user for whom the design is to be made.

My reflections I have been from quite some time been deeply fascinated and inspired by Alicia Souza who is an illustrative designer based from Bengaluru, India. She has been into illustrations for long time and has come up with engaging ways to make the audience crave for more from her every other day.
A few of her illustrations from the social media. What inspires me is her drawing inspiration. She can pick up any damn scenario happening around and pen it down on the paper with the same emotions and words that the audience can get in love with them. What also attracts is that most of her illustrations are not on political issues which I personally like 1

Introduction to Aesthetics The course started with we starting to understand what is aesthetics and beauty, philosophy of art and the emotions attached, responsibility and the commitments art has. We had discussions about Indian as well as Western concepts of aestheticism. The course revolved around art and its relation with each through the sessions spread over the week.
In the end, we were asked to choose any one of these topics and make a presentation to express and articulate our understanding. I chose to share my views and understandings about Art and Technology. My arguments were related to art created by technology mainly artificial intelligence. I talked about whether art created by machines is created the same way as humans do? Is it considered to be art? What is the role of emotions in such artworks? Can they be creative enough?

I presented e-David a robotic arm which makes paintings using machine learning to make paintings. In a way it is a human led artwork being made based on the inputs and cannot be completely called an artwork created just by the machine. Also it can be art for someone and may not for others which is also the case in human created artworks. It’s up to the viewer whether a certain piece of effort put can be called art or not. Also the emotions attached they can’t always be controlled by the artist and can be interpreted in many ways by the viewer which the artist may not have thought of while making the artwork.

The drawing module helped to sensitize me about the various natural and man-made forms present in environment. It also sharpened my skills of observation, sense of proportion and relative proportion and three dimensionality of an object through perspective drawings. The module was spread over with assignments and hands on work to understand and enhance one’s visual skills. We did carry out drawing with different kind of line drawing exercises and perspective drawings. We performed making one-point, two-point and three-point perspective drawings, after which we started to explore the surroundings around us with macroscopic and microscopic study of the nature. Later we shifted to explore to draw the human body. Starting with the basic structure, the postures and proportion and shifting to the details of the faces. Once done with the basics we moved on to work on assignments based on our discipline in the end of the module which comprised of making a info-graphic and make a newspaper article of the same. In the end of this module I had learnt to sketch out what I saw with details, perspective, proportion and how to depict a certain thing which as designers is really important and helps to translate our ideas on to paper.

In the end we were asked to make a detail human body drawing from the surrounding. Drawn on a cartridge sheet using 2B, 4B and 8B pencil. We went to the old city and tried to study a profession and come up with a interesting drawing based on our observations there.

We were asked to visit our surroundings and come up with rapid sketch of them. The one above was drawn at Teen Darwaja in the old city in Ahmedabad using drawing ink.
Having done with our basics for drawing we then shifted to work on our discipline assignments to use our learnings over the module.

Assignment The Graphic Design students were given a story about an accident and asked to draw an info-graphic for a newspaper. We started with drafts on paper and once the layout was fixed, we started making the drafts digitally in Adobe Illustrator and then use it in a newspaper
We were divided in teams of 3 and together we came up with a initial draft of the layout for the info-graphic. What went into the finalizing part was the ease of getting the message delivered visually. Not making it too complex for the reader to understand the info-graphic.

Once finalized with the info-graphic, we were also introduced about the use of color in such works. As it is meant for newspapers we were asked to consider the colors accordingly for the info-graphic and use it for a newspaper layout. We did try to play with the text from the story write-up provided to
us and decided to added a certain elements like the section for those who died, statements by the witness to make the news article more informative even if one didn’t want to read the entire story.
Good Samaritans Helping After Rollover Killed In Chain-Reaction Denver, Colorado - Three people were killed and seven injured early Saturday morning in a chainreaction crash on Interstate 225 that began when an SUV rolled. Police spokesman Sgt. Bill Revelle said at about 3:43 a.m., the driver of an Isuzu Trooper lost control, crossed the median and rolled onto oncoming northbound traffic, with the SUV resting on its side in the fast lane near Mississippi Avenue. Several cars on both sides of the highway stopped to help, including a red Dodge Neon (belonged to Joshua Tucker) going towards north that parked directly behind the Trooper, and left like that with hazard lights flashing. But then another northbound car, a Ford Explorer, lost control and crashed into the Neon and knocked it into four people who were trying to help the injured. Two of the Good Samaritans died at the scene and a third, Crissa Chavez, died at the hospital. Police say 29-year-old Joshua Tucker of Littleton and 53-year-old Terry Oliver of Denver died at the scene. Terry was on southbound traffic, and parked his car right side and came to help. Crissa was three months pregnant with her first child.

Module 2: Color Module Duration 2 weeks: August 14 - August 25

Color was introduced to us as an important factor starting with the theories, the psychology associated with color, interaction between them, hue, tine, shades, etc. We carried out assignments to understand these topics thoroughly such as mixing two colors, making the 24 color wheel, tint and shades scale, value and intensity scale, personality description.

Module 3: Composition Module Duration 2 weeks: August 28 - September 8

The composition module helped to understand how different elements can be put together and how they interact with each other in a given space. Also how one can play with the point of interest, eye movement among the space The module exposed us to Gestalt’s principles which we tried to go and find in the real world surroundings. At the end of this module what I took back as a major learning was the presence of Gestalt’s principles everywhere around us and how one can relate to it implicitly and is satisfied if used or applied correctly. The learnings from the drawing and color module helped me explore composition in a better way.
We started with making artwork using just dots. It was after this that we started to learn more about rhythm, movement, importance of space in a composition.

Typography The course was intended to expose us to what is Typography, it’s use, how each typeface designed has a certain meaning for what they are and how they are meant to be used for.

The anatomy of a typeface is filled with characteristics that which are viewed with a discern eye can be a powerful tool for a designer. When used carefully, the key features of a font can help in determining the appropriate typeface.

Draw your Name We draw our first name in as many scripts we knew to write with. I drew my name in English, Hindi and Gujarati.
While drawing these I didn’t have any logic or meaning behind the way they were drawn. Upon reviewing with the class, I understood about certain behavior a typeface or script is meant to be used.

Inspiration
We were asked to choose any typeface that inspires us or we like from hoardings, posters or any graphic design work. Along with that present about any one typeface we like.
The typeface I chose to display was Roboto. The beauty of this typeface is that it was meant for usage on mobile screen devices but later it evolved with various styles and some minute changes in the characters which make the typeface more friendly to use.

Assignment 3 was to visit the letterpress printing machine and perform a actual letterpress print in the Print Labs. We prepared the text content with the individual letter blocks and had a copy for each to carry with.

We then worked on the Story of Space event poster using hierarchy with folds in it. We were supposed to make a 18x23 inch final poster with When as the first thing in hierarchy to be conveyed to the audience.

Type flow & attributes We worked in the flow in type and attributes of the text it is portraying through type. I worked on the song ‘Jana Gana Mana‘ the national anthem of India and tried to select a certain typeface and compose it in such a way that it depicts the meaning and emphasis through type.
Getting a typeface which is reflecting the boldness and the seriousness of this song was a tedious task. I also tried to put some of my learnings from the hierarchy assignment here.

Layout Design We went to old city in groups of four, talked with random people about random stuff. Transcribed those conversations and made a story using parts from all the conversations. This story was then supposed to be laid out in 3 spreads using Adobe InDesign.

Typeface Design We used a unconventional tool and ink to make letters and then digitize them to make a typeface of our own.
These letters were drawn using a wooden piece and ink. Digitizing these letters and studying about the characteristics each letter is associated, I came up with the following typeface design.

Assignment 2 We were now assigned to select any public service place, analyze the working model, the stakeholders involved, find challenges in the utility and find possible interventions in the system.

Production processes The course helped us in getting exposed to the major printing methods in production. We are grateful for Shri Bharat Suthar who poured his knowledge for us and was very kind and patient with us and eager to make us understand every doubt we had.
One cannot simple leave it on the printer operator to handle stuff on their own. We learnt everything with paper as our main medium to print on. It was great to know about offset and screen printing in depth and use it to print a poster using both the processes.
We got to know the various tasks involved in pre-press, press and postpress and how a designer plays and important part in how the artwork is to be printed. We went to ‘art-o-print’ a printing press in the city to know more about the scale at which these processes are carried out and what effort goes in at various stages.
As a part of post-press we did practicals for hand book binding in the printing labs. This course was an important course in the semester as it helped us to know the role of graphic design in print. It’s the designer that has the power for what the output shall be.

We were alloted different topics related to production process and had to design a poster for someone who was not aware about the topic. The main motive behind the design was to check and observe how digital printing occurs and what needs to be done to correct the colors when printed on paper.

IMPOSITION Imposition, also termed as pagination is a pre-press process of arrangement of pages or artworks on a press sheet, so that when folded the pages are read consecutively. It is an effective way to print pages as it lowers cost and improves productivity of the printing press. In one go, one can print 4, 16 or even up to 96 pages.

Side Guide
Key learnings from the semester The courses during the semester helped develop me skills to be a designer as a whole and also added to become a better person allowing oneself to open their eyes and grab knowledge from the campus. Starting with what design means to how art is perceived through aesthetics, carrying on to the fundamentals which taught to see things with a perspective and compose stuff with meaning in it to convey messages visually. Design process helped to understand that it’s the process that matters most and the execution of the process is the main reason which decides whether a solution is effective or not. Graphic design courses helped to look on to typefaces and understand why, where and how to use them. Image making helped to relate the interaction between forms and make meaning messages with no extra clutter. Production process helped to gain knowledge which as a graphic designer is a must and is a key factor in the designing process.
