Teddy Bear Granny Square Tutorial

And finally, here it is, Teddy Bear Granny Square Tutorial! My very first one!

For this granny square, as for my Teddy bear baby blanket I used 100% cotton yarn 125m/50gr called "Tango" manufactured by St. George, and 3.5 mm crochet hook. The tutorial is written in U.S. terms.

Stitches you will use: Single crochet - sc Half double crochet - hdc Double crochet - dc Treble (or triple) crochet - tc Slip stitch - sl st Special stitches: Standing double crochet - you can see here how to do it You also will need beads for the eyes. I used 4mm black plastic beads.

To start:

6 sc in magic ring

slip stitch into the first sc, then chain 1

single crochet in the same stitch,

then 1 single crochet in each sc around (6 sts),

slip stitch into the first sc

Row 3: chain 1, 2 sc in the same stitch, then 2 sc in each sc around. You should have 12 stitches (as it is shown in the picture) then, slip stitch into the first sc. Fasten off. The muzzle is done.

I changed the color for the face of the bear, but you can use the same color if you want. But in that case you should string the beads on the yarn before you start the muzzle.

Before starting Row 4, you should string beads (2 of them) onto the yarn.

Join in a new color by Standing double crochet. You can also start the row with chain 3, but I didn't want the beginning to be visible, so I prefer beginning with Standing double crochet.

continue working 2dc in each stitch, and when you make 9 dc, drag the bead to the last dc you made(as it is shown in the picture) and make double crochet in the same stitch. You've just made an aye.

Continue making 2 double crochet into each stitch. It should be 6 dc between the eyes (in the picture). Then again, drag the second bead and make dc in the same stitch.

Continue around the circle in the same way, making 2 double crochet into each stitch. You should have 24 dc (picture). Then, slip stitch into the first dc you made after the Standing double crochet. The arrow indicates where you should make slip stitch

*2 dc in next stitch, 1 dc in next stitch*, repeat from * around

When you finish the row with 2 dc in stitch, make 1 dc in the space where the arrow indicates in the picture

slip stitch into top of initial 3 chain. You should have 36 stitches. Cut the yarn and pull through the stitch.

Now, we will change the color to make background. And we will work in back loops only. It is important, because we will make ears in front loops, later.

It is very important where to start our final row. The arrow indicates the stitch where we should start. It's the stitch next to the last stitch of the previous round.

join in new color by chain 3 (counts as dc), and remember, you will work in back loops only!

chain 2, 2 treble crochet in next stitch

2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches

dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, 2 tr in next stitch, chain 2, 2 tr in next stitch - you've just made the second corner

2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches, dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, 2 tr in next stitch, chain 2, 2 tr in next stitch

2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches

dc in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, 2 tr in next stitch, chain 2, 2 tr in next stitch, 2 dc in next stitch, dc in next stitch, 1 hdc in next 3 stitches the background is finished! Cut the yarn and pull through the stitch. You will not do the slip stitch.

You will make an invisible join. Thread a needle and insert it through loops from back to front, as it is shown in the picture

then insert needle back into your last stitch - through back loop only, from front to back - as it is shown in the picture

It should looks like this. You can't see the join.

Now, the ears. You should determine where the ears will be. I put the pins to indicate where you should start and finish the ears. It should be 5 stitches between them.

We will first make the right ear. I inserted the hook into the loop where you should start. As you can see, it's the fourth stitch from the pin.

slip stitch, then skip one stitch and work 6 dc in next stitch

skip one stitch and slip stitch into the next stitch. You've just finished the right ear.

Count 5 stitches from the right ear and start the left ear in the sixth stitch.

Chain 1, skip one stitch, 6 dc in next stitch, skip one stitch, slip stitch into next stitch.

Now it's time to embroider the muzzle. Take the black yarn, and do it. I used a little thinner yarn, but you can use whatever yarn you want.

And there you have your Teddy Bear Granny Square!

Now, you can make baby blankets, pillows, garlands, Pincushions, whatever you want. Have fun with this pattern!
