South Africans love markets, and even more so during the festive season. Being out and about in the sunshine (hopefully the rain doesn’t settle in for the whole summer), browsing stalls and eating ar tisanal foods. Markets are fun and of ten offer goods that are more affordable than retail shops or just unique items that cannot be sourced elsewhere.
Here’s a list of markets throughout South Africa that you can visit do a bit of Christmas shopping or to while away a few hours during your holidays, whether inland or coastal, it makes for a nice trip.
Markets Gauteng:
Br yanston Organic Market: Johannesburg
Unique craf ts and ar tisan foods, the market runs from 09h00 to 15h00 on Thursdays and Saturdays. It is an outdoor market and offers a selection of ar ts and craf ts to jeweller y and food.
Montana Family Market: Pretoria
Always a festive spot, Montana Family Market becomes a Christmas wonderland in December, with extended trading days, vibey music and gif ts in abundance. It’s a treasure-hunters dream, with more than 500 stalls selling ever ything from household appliances to recreational equipment. Open From Tuesday – Sunday 09h00 – 17h00
Boeremark: Pretoria
A firmly established market since 1992, with ever ything from farm fresh foods, to ar tisanal foods, plants ar ts and craf ts and ever ything in-between. Dogs are also welcome on lead. Open on Saturdays from 05h30 – 10h30 with a special Christmas night market on 15 December from 16h00 – 21h00
Irene Village Market: Pretoria
Vibrant music, festive stalls, bargain bins and great food make this a truly fabulous Christmas market. You will find a gif t for ever yone. Saturday 1, 8, 15 December and Sunday 16 December, 9h00 –14h00
The Sheds@1Fox: Johannesburg
Even if you’re not intending to buy Christmas gif ts at The Sheds@1Fox, you will most likely stumble upon something fabulous as you groove to the Christmas tunes and indulge in some of Jozi’s great food.
With a histor y stretching back to Christmas’ of the 1800s, this Christmas market is simply a great evening out. Fridays 12h00 –17h00; Saturdays 10h00 – 19h00; Sundays 10h00 – 16h00; last Friday of the month (Night Fox) 12h00 to 22h00
