We would like to acknowledge the Bediagal and Kameygal people of the D’harawal nation who are the traditional custodians of the land on which Shopfront is built. We pay our respects to those elders past and present, and to all our emerging elders of the future.

WELCOME TO SHOPFRONT ARTS CO-OP

Shopfront Arts Co-op is the home of youth arts. We stand as Sydney’s only cross-art form organisation led by and dedicated to the artistry of Young People. For over four decades, Shopfront has amplified the voices of Young People. Supported by practising, professional artists, our members make bold and ambitious works of creative expression. We champion acts of artistic bravery. We are acknowledged for this bravery through awards, recognition and support of arts bodies, and by the thousands of people who have at one time or another in the last four decades considered Shopfront to be their second home. Being a member of Shopfront means you are part of something. Our co-operative is an inclusive community of artists sharing a common goal of making great art (and having a lot of fun along the way). In 2019 we commence work on our much awaited building upgrade. This is an exciting time in the history of Shopfront as we grow our building with a new state-of-the-art performance space and office space where we will welcome 6 additional community youth and arts organisations, and where we will support an additional 1,160 Young People in the first year. Alongside these major upgrades we will continue with our workshops, socially engaged programs, performances, and emerging artist opportunities that are so important to you and to us.

Our 2019 Shopfront Arts Co-op Program At Shopfront we are committed to sharing the unique stories that are not always seen on Australian stages. We aim to create art that represents us all. We support our Young Members through drama, film, script-writing, technical and multi-arts workshops through our specially tailored programs, and are committed to supporting emerging artists through our programs including our member productions and residency opportunities. Shopfront is an inclusive, safe and collaborative environment for all our members to learn, create and be empowered to let their imaginations run wild. In 2019, Shopfront will continue our focus on creating high quality artistic work that stands alongside the industry’s best. Through collaboration with professional artists and partnerships, we will maintain Shopfront’s place at the top of the youth arts sector nationally and internationally. Here is our 2019 program! We are excited to support new projects, new artists and new collaborations. This year is going to be another big one, continuing to grow, develop, explore and celebrate our future arts makers. Natalie Rose, Creative Director, and the Shopfront Artistic Team

As we strive to be the premier NSW destination for youth arts we won’t lose sight of our heritage as a grassroots creative hub, dreamt of and built by passionate Young People in South Sydney. Shopfront is theirs, it is ours, and in the future Shopfront will grow to belong to many more inspiring Young People. Daniel Potter Executive Director / CEO

OUR SHOPFRONT MEMBERS At Shopfront, our very structure puts our Young People at the heart of our art and decision making. Just like our artistic practice, our organisation is also co-operative. As a co-op we exist for and are directed by our members. All of our Shopfront Young People are our members, and this co-op structure means that our Young People determine the purpose and rules of our co-op. As members they are equally entitled to vote on core issues that shape the co-op as a whole. Shopfront is a platform for emerging arts leaders. And we, as an organisation, are leaders in youth advocacy and consultation. From our first members in 1976 who fundraised to buy our very own building with 50-hour acta-thons, and with government and community support, a legacy of shared purpose has continued. Being a member of Shopfront means you are part of something. You are responsible for something. You aren’t just one Young Person trying to shout above the noise. Together we are a powerful collective.

MEMBERSHIP As a Shopfront Member you are invited to vote on important issues at our Annual General Meeting, you have access to discounted tickets and venue hire, you can pitch your idea for a Members’ Show, chat to your Shopfront Young Leader about issues concerning you, and receive members-only deals and opportunities from us and our partners. If you’re under the age of 26 and have enrolled in one of our programs, you’re a Shopfront Member for that calendar year and the next. If you’re aged 27 and over, membership is $25 per year and grants you all of the above!

I have made what are sure to be lifelong friends at Shopfront. My favourite memories have been creating things I am proud of with people I love. Shopfront will always feel like a second home to me.” Sophie Ward, Shopfront Member

VOICE OF SHOPFRONT If you’re a Shopfront Member aged 26 or under, Voice of Shopfront is your regular platform to have your opinions heard by Shopfront’s staff and Board members, and to develop your youth governance skills. Facilitated by our Shopfront Young Leader, each term we make decisions on our direction as a company and update you on what’s happening in the building. Your Shopfront Young Leader will keep you up to date on the next Voice of Shopfront meeting.

OUR PROGRAMS SOCIALLY ENGAGED PROGRAMS Our Shopfront community extends beyond our muraled walls with our artist networks, co-produced works, and our socially engaged programs that dive into the heart of community needs, working in partnership through dialogue and artistic thinking. We build collaborative art making projects responsive to the needs of organisations and Young People. Through a co-creative, deliberative, collaborative process with professional artists – Young People discover tools to mobilise art to shift perceptions, uncover new imaginative

possibilities, and work towards the creation of a platform to share what matters to them, with their community, and the wider public. As a cross-art form community hub, Shopfront uses digital media, film, performance, theatre, sculpture, installation, dependent on the needs of the project, to support Young People in unleashing their imaginations. Shopfront works with schools, youth centres, migrant resource centres, disability support services, grass-roots community organisations, and local councils in regular or intensive workshops. Contact us at Shopfront for more information on how to partner with us to create a program or project shaped for your community.

Behind the Scenes A Shopfront Member Production (#2) Four actors in the middle of touring their soldout stage production get invited onto ‘Behind the Scenes’ – a televised Q&A talk-show. There they meet Jack; a host who has never before been confronted with so much ‘diversity’ and is blissfully unaware of his misguided lines of questioning. Very quickly, the four realise that Jack is in desperate need of some re-education; and you best believe they are going to take him to school… Biting satire meets kitsch-comedy and blurs the line between performance and reality. It’s all about space-reclaiming and narrative-reframing. Directed by Riana Head-Toussaint Adult $20 / Concession $15 / Shopfront Member $10 Thurs–Sat 7pm / Sun 5pm Recommended for ages 15+

We don’t know it all. In fact, we may not know anything at all! We will fake it until we make it, and sometimes we aren’t even good at that. Does anyone really know what they are doing? The award-winning Harness Ensemble reunites to devise and perform a show about not knowing. The Experts explores what it feels like to have absolutely no idea what you are doing, especially as Young Adults with mixed abilities. This decisive and uplifting new work asks us to pause and acknowledge that while we’re busy trying to figure out the world, the world is trying to figure itself out too.
