s I look to 2018, I’m excited to continue this journey as the SLWG continues to grow and expand. Tagging along with me on this adventure is my supportive husband and my 4 children. My family is an adventure in and of themselves. With three young daughters, my husband and I watch as they plan and play out their imaginary weddings, and to be honest its already causes great anxiety. However, it is a good reminder of the joy and excitement that one should feel when planning a wedding, imaginary or real life. My son, on the other hand, doesn’t want to stop playing Nerf guns to even think of such things, and that is fine with me. There is something so magical about planning YOUR wedding, it’s a once in a lifetime dream unfolding right before your eyes. Weather its large or small, it should be YOURS. I hope our magazine and online tools and features will help you find joy in the planning process as well as be a help in laying out your perfect day. I have put together a wonderful, passionate team, full of creativity and vision, they all amaze me. Each coming to SLWG with profession experience in the wedding industry already under their belts, from their own personal businesses. The Team and I truly wish to inspire couples and show how much ambition and love our Colorado wedding vendors and venue owners put into their businesses. Therefore, on behalf of myself, my family and the SLWG Creative Team… Congratulations, and many blessings. Warmly,

Camberly Anderson Publisher, Editor Settling in Grand Junction, CO in 2014, with her small family, established her bakery business, Simply Cakes by Camberly. She quickly developed networking relationships that added to her creativity and pushed her to work harder than ever to set goals and more importantly to achieve them. Camberly wanted to reach her potential customers in a unique and personal way. Not finding exactly the right fit for her style and budget she found herself envisioning an outlet for small, passionate businesses to reach out to potential wedding planning couples. With the love and support of her husband, Camberly dove in to create and develop a fresh and affordable advertising outlet for others in the wedding industry. But wanting to take it a step further, she didn’t just want to just advertise for these businesses, she wanted to introduce them. Show others the love and passion, hard work and sacrifice these vendors pour into their businesses. The Shop LOCAL Wedding Guide was born. Camberly is excited to meet and “show off” the amazing and talented vendors of Colorado, the gorgeous venues and also to meet with Brides and Grooms looking for inspiration among their LOCAL Vendors.

Engaged … Now What?

By Amanda Helmick

T

priorities lie in terms of vendors to break down how much you can spend with each part of the day. This also helps you decide if you need to reallocate some of the budget from one vendor to another to get the team you want for your wedding.

he proposal of your dreams happened. You of course said “yes!” and sent out selfies of the ring to all your friends and loved ones. You celebrated with some drinks or a fancy dinner or just a night looking at the stars. Now what?

Do Your Research.

The wedding planning process can be a daunting one. By picking up this magazine you’re already on the right track! There are a handful of essential first steps on the planning journey to ensure you have fewer stresses and hiccups along the way. Guided by past brides and vendors’ insights, this article will outline where to begin.

Now that you’ve got all your ducks in a row, you’re ready to research vendors and venues for the big day. Discuss with your new fiancé where you want to get married. Want to do a destination wedding in Europe? In love with the nearby mountain vistas? Or maybe your hometown church is your dream? Figure out what you each want and create a list of venues. Compare these venues’ pricing to your budget you created. Is the price a little bit higher than you budgeted? Is it worth it to skimp a little on the table decor? These are decisions you may be faced with! Most importantly you’ll need to know if they have your date available. If not, are you willing to move to another date? Be sure to look at as many options as you’re interested in and don’t settle for the first venue in the area you find.

The Timeline. Give yourself time to plan when you decide on a date! If you’re not planning to just elope, you’ll need plenty of time to put together the wedding of your dreams. Not only will it help you organize, track things, and give you breathing space for the busyness of life, it can also help you have time to save a little extra money to afford the vendors you truly want. Industry professionals recommend aiming for a wedding date at least a year out from the engagement.

Book the Essentials.

One of my 2017 brides Savannah told me, “I wish I’d considered how busy I’d be as a full-time college student and employee. It was difficult to find time, but I made it easy on myself by getting the most important things done quickly—the essential vendors like the venue, photographer, coordinator, food.”

Get Organized.

Plan, Plan, Plan.

You’re likely feeling overwhelmed with the journey ahead of you. Be sure to get organized from the get-go with a binder or folder, whether you make it or buy it! In that binder keep track of wedding planning timelines, vendor recommendations, notes you take as you meet with vendors, color schemes for the wedding, reception layouts, guest list, RSVPs, and more. Some websites out there offer these services to brides for an online option too.

Have a planner, either paper or online, and outline the important dates in planning. Mark the dates you need to send out save the dates and invitations, when you need RSVPs back by, final payments to vendors, when to order the save the dates/invitations, when to have your bridal shower, and more. Any dates you need to remember, put it in this special calendar and check it often!

Another 2017 bride Ali told me, “I wish I’d known how much sheer work it is when you’re doing it yourself without a planner. You hear all the time how expensive everything is so I feel like I braced myself for it, but the actual work and keeping track of everything was stressful.”

Before you begin with the vendors for the big day, figure out how much you can spend. Factor in any money you’ll be able to save during the planning process, what you’ve got set aside already, and any contributions you may receive from family. Decide where your

8

Shop LOCAL Wedding Guide 2018

Make a Budget.

As Savannah mentioned above, it helps take so much pressure off to book your important vendors as soon as you have a date and venue locked in. Photographers, bakers, planners, and more essential vendors often book a year or more in advance. To ensure you’ll be able to get the vendors of your dreams, meet with these important people first and book as early as you can.

Enjoy the Little Things. Once you have the date, venue, budget, and essential vendors booked you’re all set! Just kidding. You have a long road ahead of you still, but the big things are behind you now. You can now relax a little bit, knowing that you’ve got a plan and you are organized! Now comes the fun of inviting your wedding party to be part of the special day, starting your guest list, picking out colors and shopping for dresses. Since you’ve got a great foundation for this whole wedding planning thing, you can enjoy these little parts of wedding planning that you’ll look back on fondly! Remember to take a moment to really take in the process and this part of life. It goes by in a flash!

Succulent & Peach

By Jordan Perry, Owner of Carved Tree Photography

I

t is hard not to be inspired when you live in a place like Grand Junction where the Colorado National Monument is literally in your backyard. The location for this styled shoot is one that I walk often with visions of potential photography projects in my mind. For this shoot I wanted to embrace all of the things I love about this area, from the amazing local wines to the spectacular peaches grown in the neighboring town of Palisade. I had originally intended to center the theme of this shoot solely on succulents, but as I passed stand after stand of peaches on my drive to the shoot, I knew I had to stop and get a

10

box to feature along with the amazing florals crafted by Country Elegance Florists. They looked especially delicious paired with the peach ombre cake and 2-tier cakes created by Cakelady Creations in Grand Junction. There is something so romantic about this intimate picnic setting with all of its charms. The setting was made even more welcoming with two beautiful window pane signs created by The Bohemian Farmhouse for this shoot. Country Elegance Florists provided an array of greenery from the bouquet to the centerpiece, and amazing accent pieces

such as the beautiful lantern filled with flowers. The peaches were of course from a local stand, and the wine was from the wonderful Two Rivers Winery located just minutes from the featured location. I just happened to pick my very favorite wine of theirs, named “Tulip for its beautiful color and delightful sparkling character. I was so fortunate to have been able to have the amazing team of Aimee Ludwig and Erica Flint from Hair We Are lend their talents to this project. I had been hearing great things about Aimee for years before this project and was so

glad to finally have an excuse to work with her. Aimee had such a great vision for two different hair looks that she achieved effortlessly using the fun hair accessories made by the local craft goddess at Chickadee Crafts. I loved watching Aimee work, and she was sweet enough to stay during the shoot and help with problematic lighting and making sure every detail looked its best. The gown and tuxedo from Victoria Rose Bridal added a perfect touch of classic elegance to the shoot. I love that the model wanted to use her own dress from her wedding the previous year because it made the shoot very personal, and I could see she loved putting it on for a second time. The groom looked equally great in his tuxedo, and I have to give him great credit for looking so relaxed when he had to have been melting from the ninety degree heat. The week of the shoot was marked with evening rainstorms blowing through the monument at exactly the time I had planned the shoot. I obsessively checked the weather all week watching that 15% chance of rain creep up, and ran to the store in a panic to buy a clear umbrella just in case we needed it for a prop. Luckily the night was clear and there was no rain on our picnic, and the lighting was just perfect to give everything a wonderful peachy glow. The models were such an awesome couple and so fun to work with. I could not get enough of their genuine laughs and general sweetness toward each other. The two had been married over a year, but they had such a great connection you would never guess it wasn’t their wedding day. In fact, several hikers and passersby stopped to congratulate them as we navigated the path taking photos. Other than working with the amazing models, my favorite part of this project was definitely creating the picnic scene. I really wanted to create something unique and intimately romantic all at the same time. My own husband laughed as I started accumulating mass quantities of succulent plants for this spread. I really got into visiting local nurseries and finding all sorts of different varieties of succulents to add dimension and interest to the picnic. As I had everything laid out on my dining room table at home, I had no idea it would look so amazing paired with the vast scenery behind it. Something about the elegance among the natural landscape was magical to see. I hope brides who are looking for something unique and different will find inspiration here, maybe something to help them venture from the beaten path. I have nothing but gratitude from the amazing vendors who helped bring all of this together, it was such an amazing journey and one for which I am truly grateful.

Love Stories

Jonat han & Kelly Moments by Melanie Photography

Told by Kelly

J

onathan and I knew each other at least three years before we started dating. To say we met is honestly a little to formal, our high school English teacher had assigned seats and we just so happened to be placed together, our conversations never lasted long and usually consisted of him asking me if we had homework or not. We had a handful of classes that year and we even attended the same church with our families. It wasn’t until February of 2013 that we actually talked for the first time, and it wasn’t because either of us had this big eye opening to the other. However, Jon started putting himself in my path. If I was taking out the trash from Sunday school classrooms he was there holding the door for me, if I was putting price stickers on objects at the church yard sale, than it just so happened that he was there too. It wasn’t till after we graduated that we started dating and we attend school together the following fall. This is what they call the honeymoon phase, the cooing and the “I love you forever” type thing. I’ll forever be grateful that God brought this man into my life, that he kept this man for just me. Jonathan was my first boyfriend, my first kiss and my first love, he is my first and only husband, and I am his. There is not another man like him, he has what we call a servant’s heart, you’ll find him picking up discarded trash from parking lots and walk ways but never seeking another’s praise for it, you’ll see him hold any door for anyone. Most of all he serves in his marriage. He seeks and trusts the Lord with all things. Jonathan is a simple and quiet man with a humor so quick, and I am honored to be his wife. We got married August 12, 2017 our ceremony took place in our church, Calvary Chapel Montrose, by our Pastor, Ben Garaté.

H

eather and James met while working on an archaeological dig at the site of Hell Gap National Historic Landmark in Wyoming. James and Heather rarely talked to each other for most of the project, but after working on KP duty together they struck up a friendship. They went on their first date back in Boulder, CO, at a local burrito joint. A month later Heather left to finish her degree at the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, and James and Heather didn’t know if they would ever see each other again. When James flew out to Edinburgh that fall, they both knew they had found a once in a lifetime love. James and Heather traveled across the Atlantic to see each other for that first year, and together they had many wonderful adventures in

Scotland, Germany, Denmark and Greece. Heather returned to the USA the following year, and in November James proposed. As Colorado natives, Heather and James knew they wanted to get married in an outdoor ceremony that would celebrate the wonderful beauty of their home state. Heather discovered the Mountain Wedding Garden in Crested Butte, and she immediately fell in love with its rustic but stunning charm. The couple visited the venue before booking it in January, and even though the garden lay under several feet of snow they knew that it would be the perfect spot for a spring wedding. They could just imagine how spectacular the venue would be carpeted in flowers and framed by dramatic peaks.

Over the last seven years, Moments by Melanie Photography, has traveled the Western Slope of Colorado. From the breathtaking wineries and Colorado River venues of the Grand Valley to the majestic snowcapped mountain venues of Crested Butte and Telluride, and everywhere in between. Wedding Photography is something that touches my heart and I find great joy in making it my profession. From a bride getting ready for her big day with tons of laughs and anticipation, to the first time a groom sees his beautiful bride walking down the aisle towards him and the celebration of the reception. I’m there for every moment. I take pride in capturing the memories and details for my clients that can be looked back on for a lifetime to come. Striving to give the bride and groom the best representation of their big day, is what makes it all worthwhile. To me, wedding photography is one of the most essential pieces in the planning of your wedding.

John & Chelsea Amanda Matilda Photography

Told by Chelsea

“U

nknowingly we were living in the same apartment complex for a year without seeing each other. What’s even crazier is that our bedroom windows literally facing one another. One day at the pool we met. “Out of nowhere this handsome man came up, at this moment I met my future husband John. It took us five days to fall in love, and the rest is history.” “In 2013 (for John’s thesis work and with a permit!) we carved in an aspen tree “J ♥ C ’13” at Ohio park up in the Ouray amphitheater. In the summer of 2014 John returned to Ohio park to look at the tree we had carved in. At that moment, he knew he never wanted to carve any other initials into a tree for the rest of his life, so he carved “C, Will you marry me? J. ‘14.” A year later John and I drove from Montana to Texas after he completed his internship. We made sure to make a stop in Ouray. As we started driving up to Ohio park. I asked him if we could go see our original carving that we made in 2013. I didn’t know, but he had the ring in the box on his left side as we were driving up the mountain. I got out of the car, looked at the carving, suddenly he dropped to one knee and popped the question. I was totally surprised! After I got done happy crying, I carved “Yes ‘15.” This special place near Ouray was our wedding site.

Christ ine & Dan Taylor Davenport Photography

Told by Christine

D

an always had a sense of adventure and love for the outdoors. He grew up in Chicago and had a dream to move to Colorado. In December 2014, he packed his things and drove out to CO. Two weeks later, his friend Eli came out to visit him. They decided to go out for the night and ended up at cowboy lounge in downtown Denver. I was also out that night with friends. When I walked in I saw Dan standing there, and we exchanged several smiles. After some time, I mustered up the courage to go over and tell him that he should dance with me. We spun around and around the dance floor and even ended up falling to the ground once. Before the night ended, I put number in his phone under “Christine Cowboy Lounge”. He reached out to me the next day, and we went on an official date the following Monday, to the Botanical Gardens at Chatfield. Even though Dan’s plan was to stay single for a year and explore CO, we knew from the start that there was something different about our relationship. Almost two years later after going on many trips to the mountains to ski, camp and hike, Dan planned a hike up Quandary Peak in October. After making it to the peak, Dan said that he wanted a picture with the sign that I made that morning that said (Quandary Peak, 14,265’). What I didn’t know was that Dan also made a sign that morning that said, “will you marry me”. So, when I opened the sign, he got down on a knee and proposed! It was so shocking, and I was beyond thrilled.

hop LOCAL is excited to bring you the latest about new wedding venues popping up on the western slope! From beautiful barn weddings or upscale ballrooms, to hip urban downtown spaces, there have been some cool new spaces opening their doors over the last year. The Pineapple Place right here in downtown Grand Junction is one of these wedding venues; read on to learn all about why it’s one of our favorite new places to host your intimate wedding celebrations. Declared a historic landmark by the city of Grand Junction, this downtown GJ venue was once an antique market along Main Street. It has since been restored by its owners to the original brick, tile ceiling, and hardwood flooring of the 1890s! The space now definitely reflects that urban and beautifully historic vibe that makes downtown Grand Junction truly unique and absolutely awesome. The history of the place really resonates through the walls.

“The pineapple is the universal symbol for warmth, welcome, friendship and hospitality, which is exactly what we hope to facilitate with our new space!” -Brook Calhoon

,

You might be wondering, “Why is it called Pineapple Place?” When speaking to Brook Calhoon, manager of the space, you can understand exactly why all things “pineapple” matter so much to her! Calhoon tells us, “The pineapple is the universal symbol for warmth, welcome, friendship and hospitality, which is exactly what we hope to facilitate with our new space!” The Pineapple Place is certainly a wonderfully inviting venue for events of all kinds. Pineapple Place can be dressed up with modern touches that truly highlight the urban vibe of the venue. Beyond that, though, there are numerous ways to play with the space in this venue to customize it to exactly what you want for your celebration! With a large basement area as well, this venue has enough space to host 125 people. Calhoon says couples looking at booking the Pineapple Place can expect to spend from $150-$1,500 depending on their coverage; making it one of the more affordable spaces in the valley!
