OUR TOP PICKS: S Once upon a time designer sunglasses in Australia use to carry a hefty price tag which pushed shoppers like me to search overseas for the ‘IT’ pair of sunnies. Ray bans for example use to be around the $250-$300 mark and in the US. I could purchase the same pair for under $200. Not anymore; I’ve noticed over the past 12 months that sunglass prices have dropped dramatically and become competitive. I can now buy Ray-Bans for the same price overseas if not cheaper here in oz.

R ONLINE I love a good swimsuit and being a bit of a beach bum, I can admit to having 2 draws full of them. It can be a little frustrating to shop for swimwear online but with a little research and patience you can find the perfect one. One of the advantages of buying swimwear online are the choices, follow these simple steps to make your purchase easy sailing. STEP ONE

Before you begin your search, narrow down your options. The choices can be overwhelming. Decide on price range, style (2-piece, one piece, tankini), or even a designer. STEP TWO

Look for a website that has contact details. You really want to know you can contact them via email and phone numbers. STEP THREE

Check the fabric details. As you can’t touch or feel the garments, you want to know what the swimsuit is made of and read care instructions. STEP FOUR

Check and make sure that there are several images of the swimsuit. It may look great from the front, but you want to see the back view too. Nothing more disappointing than when you receive your swimsuit to find out you just bought a g-string. The more images available the better. STEP FIVE

Check the sizing chart. Pay close attention to this, all good websites will have a sizing chart and if you’re unsure call or email them to discuss. STEP SIX

When you receive the swimsuit try it on immediately but do not take off the tags or hygienic liners until you are sure you want to keep it. STEP SEVEN BAY WATCH PLUNGE $149 www.bondibather.com.au

Most importantly read the return/exchange policy. You want to know exactly if they return, exchange or refund if swimsuit not suitable and you may only have a certain time frame to return. Read all the fine print.

HERE ARE SOME OF MY PICKS FOR BEST ONLINE SWIMWEAR STORES is probably one of the best swimwear online stores I have seen. There are over 100 brands to choose from and there really is something here for all body shapes. They have women’s plus size, cup sizing up to H cup, maternity, mastectomy & chlorine resistant cossies; they even have a wide range for men and kids too. I love their shop by shape, just click on your body shape and some very helpful hints and tips will pop up. The returns and exchange policy are easy, and shipping is free on all orders over $100. BONDIBATHER.COM.AU has become an iconic Australian label. They design and make everything in Australia. The fabric is super high quality and unlike most cossies over time you don’t end up with a saggy bum. The thing I love the most is that their collections are limited edition; which means you won’t turn up to the beach and see every other person wearing your swimsuit. All the pieces are sold as separates so you can mix and max. Free shipping on orders over $150. CITYBEACH.COM.AU is a mega mall for all major surf brands; heaps to choose from like Billabong, Ripcurl, Roxy, O’Neil & Rusty. Not just for women they have a heap for men and kids too. Free shipping on orders over $75 (excludes bulky items) SWIMWEARGALORE.COM.AU

all pieces sold separately. Their website is easy to navigate. Pick a top and or bottom that suits, size and colour and add to cart. Shipping is a bit pricy at $17 but they are shipping direct from their factory in Indonesia. DELMAARSWIMWEAR.COM is the site you go to if you want to stand out in the crowd. I love their bikinis. Del Maar is an Australian label that was created by 2 Latin girls from Peru and Mexico. Don’t panic is you are thinking all their swimsuits are thongs. They have cuts for everyone. Their pieces come in 5 different shapes, refer to their bottom size guide. Shipping starts from $10. VDMTHELABEL.COM has a bit of a following and been seen on Bella Hadid. While checking out their website for this story I couldn’t help myself and I added a couple of things to my cart from the sale, would have been rude not to. They had an extra 40% off so I ended up with a bikini for under $60 (Simba top in black and Jesses bottom in white). Shipping is $8. FELLASWIM.COM

It’s that time of the year when temperatures drop and we all start thinking of sunny skies, palm trees, sandy beaches and Pina Coladas. Even thinking about a holiday makes me happier. As much as we would like to visit Europe, unfortunately we can’t take a month off work and I won’t travel that far for 10 days so the next best thing for us is the South Pacific and we really have fallen in love with Island life, we are ticking off 1 island at a time. So far, we have traveled to Fiji, Cook Islands, Isle of Pines, Samoa and our favorite Vanuatu. Did you know that Vanuatu is only a 3 ½ hour flight from Sydney and on the same time zone? It is, and we often travel there for long weekends; leave on a Thursday and back on a Monday. Vanuatu stole a bit of our hearts we just love it. We would like to explore more of the islands especially after visiting the Island Aore in January, was so magical, not a single shop not even a supermarket and everything is solar powered, they have rain water tanks, population only 400 and some of the most amazing meals we have ever eaten, so fresh. Next on our list is Tonga, fingers crossed we can visit there within in the next couple of months. We just love the Island Life. Although we only go away for a week after living the island life is feels like a lot longer and we have had the chance to defrost and recharge the batteries. Because of our work schedules we tend to book last minute. If seeing all the amazing holiday pics on Instagram has you wanting to book a last-minute trip, but you’re worried booking last minute will break the bank, don’t be. Here are some ways to get cash back from your bookings thanks to CASHREWARDS and sometimes booking last minute can be a bit cheaper.

FLIGHTS, ACCOMMODATION, CAR RENTAL, INSURANCE AND MORE! Expedia.com is my go to. Sometimes it is cheaper to book flights and accommodation together depending on your destination. Bonus I get cash back as well as Expedia points which I can use towards my next trip. You can use Expedia for booking car hire and activities too. You can earn up to 7% cash back on your booking. Because we travel to the South Pacific a lot we fly with Virgin, they have direct flights to most of the destinations we love, and we get 1% cash back and sometimes I can’t get direct flights using Expedia, so I book with Virgin direct. Did you know you can even book travel insurance through CASHREWARDS and get cash back on that too? You can get 4.2% cash back with Travel Insurance Direct. Never leave home without it. If the South Pacific is not your thing you can book a holiday to just about anywhere in the world including locally, via CASHREWARDS. Look at all these options: FLIGHTS

PICKING THE RIGH THERE ARE 4 MAIN FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE YOU BUY YOU NEXT SUITCASE: 1. SIZE 2. WEIGHT you don’t want a bag more than 4-5 kilos for the large suitcase 3. MOBILITY 4. DURABILITY You want your suitcase to make your travels easier, needs to be built strong enough to handle all the throwing of loading on and off the plane, and you want handles and wheels to make walking a breeze. I don’t think you can go cheap when it comes to luggage. Luggage is an investment piece as you will have it for many years.

PACKING TIPS PACKING IS CRUCIAL. YOU DON’T WANT TO FORGET ANYTHING, AND YOU DON’T WANT TO OVER-PACK, ESPECIALLY WITH THE HEFTY BAGGAGE FEES. ALWAYS KEEP IN MIND TO SAVE ROOM FOR ANY SHOPPING YOU MAY DO.

TRAVEL LIKE A PRO 1. ROLL, DON’T FOLD. Rolling clothes takes up way less room than folded, they also get less creases. 2. MAKE A PACKING LIST Try not to pack last minute, this is when disaster can happen. Make a list, I tend to do a separate list for clothes & accessories then one for toiletries and gadgets. Lay all your clothes out and try and pack pieces that you can mix and match for day and night this will cut your packing by half. I do the same thing for toiletries, I do tend to overpack and they weigh a tonne. I also try to only pack 2-3 pairs of shoes. If packing a handbag try and pack one that can lay flat, if it can’t fill the bag with clothing. I do the same thing for toiletries, I do tend to overpack and they weigh a tonne. 3. KNOW YOUR AIRLINE’S RULES FOR CARRY-ON LUGGAGE It’s important to know the rules. Most airlines allow you to take a carry-on bag plus your personal bag (weight restrictions do apply). We all know liquids &

gels over 100ml are a no-no. I do like to take a few products on flight with me. Most beauty brands now have travel sizes, this is a must before I travel. To make the whole process of checking in easier my carry-on toiletries bag is clear, that way I can just pop out my bag without having to scrummage through and pull everything out. 4. LAYER UP When travelling make sure you layer up. You want to able to remove pieces of clothing as you head to a warmer climate. Nothing more uncomfortable after a long flight than queuing up sweating. Cashmere is always a good light option. 5. NEVER CHECK IN VALUABLE ITEMS It is so important to pack your valuables in your carry-on bag, not your checked in luggage. Jewellery, electronics, and other valuables should always be taken on the plane with you for obvious reasons; the airline may lose your luggage and I hate to say it but after a trip my Aunty went on years ago and she saw a baggage handler (in another country) take the watches she bought and put under the counter, she did call him out on it and he put back. I really don’t think that happens often, but you never know.

MAKING YOUR TRIP ONE OF THE BIGGEST LIFE EXPERIENCES IS PLANNING THAT LONG AWAITED WELL DESERVED BIG HOLIDAY, ESPECIALLY THIS TIME OF THE YEAR WHEN WE ALL WANT TO ESCAPE THE COLD. Whether it’s taking the kids to a resort in Fiji or going on that long-planned trip for 2 overseas. We plan our itinerary; shop around for the fares, research online for the best accommodation. Sometimes these trips are organised like a well planned out military manoeuvre. Just when we think we have it all covered, it’s time to pack, Arrrrrrrr. What to pack, what not to take, am I packing too much, have I allowed enough room for any shopping I do? All things to consider. Now were all packed and ready to go only to find when we get to the airport we have to take all our bottles of liquid out because there too big (over 100ml). Finally, we arrive at our destination and realise to phone home is going to cost the price of your airline ticket. Well, maybe these quick ideas might help. www.jetsettr.com.au has one of the largest ranges of travel gear and accessories, anywhere. They cater for all travelers, regardless of age, style or budget. So, whether you are backpacking or traveling 5 star all the way you will find what you need here. They also have some great travel tools, and downloadable templates; packing list & a checklist of things to do before you go. One of my biggest problems is the weight of my bag, not before I leave, I have that down pat I take as little as possible, I know the amount of shopping I’m going to do (no surprise there really) so the Go Travel Digital Luggage Scales (pictured $31.95) have saved me a fortune in excess luggage fees. One of my biggest fears when traveling is someone else picking up my bag by mistake, not anymore, I just ordered a luggage cover from www. bagstogo.com.au (pictured starting from $29.95), these are genius; they protect, secure and identify your bag. They come in various patterns and super easy to slip over your case.

32

Hands up if you have come home after an amazing trip to a phone bill that costs the price of that Gucci bag you left behind in Florence. I am so organised now before I travel, even down to my sim card. The most cost-effective way of traveling with your phone is to purchase a SIM for the country of your destination. www.travelgear.com.au have searched for the best value SIM for each country; over 20 destinations Advantages of getting your SIM before you travel: • You can often have your new phone number in advance, to give to people or to forward-direct your home phones. • Convenience – most SIM can be set up to work as soon you step off the plane or after adding credit. • Saves time and money. Don’t waste your precious travel time searching yourself in the shops to buy a SIM at a good deal that is right for you. • They give you tips and hints on avoiding any hassles with each SIM. If you need assistance to find the best options for you, please email at help@travelgear.com.au with your itinerary and requirements they are helpful. www.Korjo.com.au also has the perfect Plastic travel bottle set (pictured $8.99) I don’t just use these bottles for carry on. The weight of taking shampoo, conditioner and all other toiletries that are needed can be the make or break of a few new pairs of shoes that just tip you over the allowed baggage allowance, so I fill all these bottles with what I need to take. Don’t be caught out without an adaptor, you will find them here starting from $11.50, if you’re unsure of what adaptors to buy have a look at their adaptor guide. Happy Traveling!

/ POOCH REPORT

POOCH REPORT Choosing your pet’s home away from home while you’re gone can be difficult one, owners must choose between friends, family, pet sitters or boarding kennels for pet care. Most dog owners dread going away and leaving their dogs, and some dogs don’t cope at all well with being confined to a kennel where they miss their cuddles, pats and walkies. For your pet’s welfare, and your own peace of mind, it is important you take the time to find the right boarding services for your pet’s needs. Where possible, contact at least two or three kennels in your area and ask questions. Once you have decided where you want to book make an appointment for you and your pet to visit the facility. I think this is very important; you don’t want to arrive at the kennel the day before you go on holidays to find that it’s not what you expected. Won’t be a good holiday for you or your pet. A GOOD BOARDING FACILITY WILL ANSWER YES TO THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS: • Is the accommodation safe, secure and clean? • Is the staff friendly, caring and experienced? • Is there sufficient ventilation, light and heating? • Do they insist that all vaccinations are up to date? Including kennel cough? • What veterinary services are available? • Are cats housed away from dogs? • Can they cope with any special requirements such as dietary, medication or grooming? • Are resting boards or bedding provided? • Do the dogs have enough play and exercise time? • Is there enough room for cats to move around comfortably? •Can I bring my pet’s special food and toys?

STILL NOT SURE? HERE’S SOME TIPS TO FIND THE RIGHT ACCOMMODATION: • Research, research, research • Go in person, when you go and visit and they won’t let you past the front counter, this is not a good indication • Ask lots of questions • Plan ahead. Don’t leave it till the last minute. A lot of the good boarding facilities are booked months in advance and you don’t want to be disappointed • If you get a pet sitter tell your neighbours. The RSPCA receive a lot of phone calls from concerned neighbors about pets who they think have been left on their own. WHAT DO AVOID: • A small, dark, almost totally enclosed area without, windows, door/hatch or exercise run is not a hotel or kennel, it’s a prison. • Nothing to look at except other barking dogs... It’s a prison. • If pets never leave the kennels... It’s a prison. • Prices can vary depending on the type of care and facilities you are looking for. • To find a kennel in your state ask your local vet. When mum and dad go away, they leave me at Hanrob. I do miss them when they go but I am treated so well & given lots of cuddles by the staff, taken on walks and plenty of play time with other dogs; I’ve made so many friends. I’m lucky that they book me into the luxury suite (I think this is guilt for leaving me) and being on medication twice a day and special food, it gives them peace of mind knowing that I’m well looked after. I always get a glowing report card at the end of my stay. I know how to work it.

Holidays aren't just for Mum and Dad! 34
