East Cocalico Lions Club Student Of The Month
from 02.22.23 issue
Each month, the East Cocalico Lions Club honors a Cocalico High School student for their achievements and for being one of the High School’s and the community’s finest. Each student is presented with a certificate and a monetary gift along with an inspiration book and a flash drive from the Adamstown Public Library.
Recently, at a club meeting that she and her parents attended, Alison Breneman was honored as a Club’s Student of the Month by the members of the East Cocalico Lions Club. At Cocalico, Alison has played Soccer (Captain) and Softball for four years and is a member of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club.
Besides being a recipient for the East Cocalico Lions Student of the Month, she is also a recipient of Student of the Month both in Chemistry and World Studies. She is involved in her church’s Youth Group and worked at Springside Golf. Alison believes in the Lions Clubs motto of “We Serve” by volunteering at the Gardens of Stevens and babysitting at her church. She plans to attend college for Cardiac Sonography.

Ich bin die Freind, Professor Brod Fresser ***
The time had come for the sale to begin. Glenn had assembled his team: Tim, Nelson and Glenn Zimmerman, Tom, Claudette and Dave, Zimmy and his helpers, Ann Lausch and Mike Young. Usually Lizzy Zimmerman is there helping, but today is Ascension Day and she was unable to be here. Lizzie is married to Elam Zimmerman, a farmer and a carpenter. Mike Young is currently a student at Millersville University, where his father had been a coach. Now Zimmy turned on the lights. The food stand was ready. They were selling such items as hamburgers, potato chips, and coffee. And who is there first in line? Yep, it’s Charlie Good. Right behind him are Frank Slabach and Ike Wenger. And there’s Warren Sensenig waiting for a cup of coffee. And Lester Dennis needs a bite to eat before the sale begins. And bringing up the rear is none other than Truman Wade,
B.G.’s uncle. They’re ready to being. Glenn asks, “Did you get your number?” and then admonishes the buyers, “If you buy it, you pay for it and you take it away!” Dot almost went berserk in her buying. The auctioneers called out number 28 (our number) almost every other time. How on earth are we going to get these things home? She’s buying and buying! And the pile before me got bigger and bigger. From time to time she would ask, “Don’t you think we could use that?” (and up went her hand). Finally, I crawled from beneath the pile to put our purchases in the car. It was raining and I got wet. What have I done that I have to suffer through this? The car is just about full, How am I going to squeeze my wife in? I know, I’ll get a shoe horn. Was I pleased to have everything loaded.
I have to look around to see who’s here. There’s David Weaver from Carpenter’s Church. His wife used to clean for Charlie. There’s Flossie Foltz, chatting with David Glick’s son, who farms just behind Charlie’s house. I see Sue Slabach talking with Harry and Herb Beam. And who’s sitting next to Arlene Slabach? Yes, it’s Lydia Shirk with her baby on her lap. Baby Lori arrived prematurely, so it’s hard to tell exactly how old she is. Like BischliGnippli, she was born before her time. And who are those busy girls helping Ann Lausch? They are none other than Lydia’s daughters, Diane and Sharon. Like Nelson and Glenn, they speak Dutch beautifully. I went into the bathroom to wash my hands. Then I went back under the tent and what do you think? Dot had accumulated another pile. Now what should I do? How can I get this stuff home? At that point Auctioneer Glenn announced that we could pick up our things on Saturday morning at 9. Suddenly the lights went out! But before long, Zimmy had fixed them. Then I payed for all our purchases. Pretty soon they’ll send me to the poorhouse. Finally we got back to our car. With all my strength I squeezed Dot into the car. Homeward we sailed. It was about 11 p.m. I told Dot I was hungry, so she warmed a bowl of potato soup for me. I went to bed and slept like a log. That was the end of a day of woe and yet filled with fun. I am your friend, Professor Bread Eater ***
And thus we bring to an end the highly original report by Dave Hornberger, alias Professor Bread Eater, on that eventful Ascension Day sale just north of Sandy Beach in West Earl Township, right here in Lancaster County. The rain didn’t seem to dampen anyone’s spirits. If you happen to meet any of the characters introduced in this sketch, you might ask them to confirm or deny any aspect of this report which might have confused you. I think it’s safe to conclude that “A good time was had by all.”
