* On March 17, 1756, St. Patrick’s Day was celebrated for the first time in New York City at John Thompson’s Crown and Thistle public house. Interestingly, Thompson was nicknamed “Scotch Johnny,” and his tavern was only part-time Irish.
* On March 16, 1834, Charles Darwin, on the HMS Beagle, anchored in the British-owned Falkland Islands for the first time, to carry out a zoological survey. At first unimpressed by the desolate landscape, he soon discovered fossils of about 400 million years old, most of which are now housed in London’s Natural History Museum.

Lions Club 43rd Annual Sports Card Show And Auction
The Ephrata Lions Club will present their 43rd Annual Sports Card Show and Auction at the Ephrata Recreation Center, 130 South Academy Drive, Ephrata, on Saturday, March 25, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Former Philadelphia Eagles linebacker Jeremiah Trotter, the “Ax Man,” will sign autographs between 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. There is a cost for autographs. No mail orders or advanced tickets will be accepted.
The Silent Auction will end at 1:30 p.m. and the Quality Auction will begin at approximately 2:30 p.m. featuring cards, complete sets, publications, autographs, photographs and other memorabilia. 528 Theatre Presents “Fame Jr.” VFW Voice Of Democracy Essay Winners

Theatre will present their spring musical, “Fame Jr.” on Friday, March 24 and Saturday, March 25 at 7:00 p.m. in the Middle School auditorium. There is an admission cost per person and tickets are available at the door.
“Fame Jr.” is set during the last four years of the High School for the Performing Arts in New York City in the early 1980s. Watch as the Acting, Music and Dance students work their way through their studies and experiences as they move toward graduation.
The cast and crew are made up of students in grades fifth through eighth. A total of 35 students are in the cast and 23 are in the support crew. The Production Staff includes: Mr. Danny L. The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in the future generation. The High School contest is called the Voice of Democracy, and this year’s
Student essay theme was, “Why is the Veteran Important?”

Mary Jane “Janie” (Weinhold) Buchter
Mary Jane ‘Janie’ (Weinhold) Buchter, 75, of Stevens, passed away Wednesday, March 8, 2023. Born in Lauschtown, PA, she was a daughter of the late Clarence J. Sr. and Bertha (Kessler) Weinhold and the loving wife of 58 years to David A. Buchter.
She was a graduate of Garden Spot High School, class of 1965. Janie worked at the Cinderella Knitting Mills for 25 years. She was a faithful member of Wiest United Methodist Church in Scheoneck for over 50 years. She enjoyed volunteering for bingo at the Denver Fair and Schoeneck Fire Co. Janie’s happy place was always the beach, especially Tuckahoe Acres in Dagsboro, Delaware. She spent her beach time golf-carting in the sun to soak in the views and wearing her favorite flip flops. Janie was known to always have a smile on her face. Family was everything to Janie, including making time to stay in touch with her sisters and extended family. Her greatest joy was spending time with her grandsons and great granddaughters.
Janie is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Corwin (Brian) of Reinholds; two grandsons, Ryan Corwin of Reinholds and Nick Corwin
(Kendel) of Denver; three great granddaughters, Elodie, Kennedy, and Everleigh; and six sisters, Alta M. Hoshour, Hazel V. Sweigart, Shirley L., wife of Ernest R. Dunkelberger Sr., Bertha G. Adair, Agnes A., wife of Steve Thomas, & Helen V., wife of Harold L. Shaak. Janie was predeceased by one infant granddaughter, Nicole, and three brothers, Clarence ‘C.J.’ ‘Shorty’ Weinhold Jr., husband of Marian E. Weinhold, Evan P. Weinhold, and David K. Weinhold.
A viewing was held on Sat., Mar. 11th at Good Sipler Funeral & Cremation Centre, Inc., 34 N. Reamstown Rd., Reamstown (Stevens), Pa. The funeral service began at 2 p.m.
