Denver Fair Committee Supports First Responders/Community Groups

Friendly Circle Meeting

The Friendly Circle held its April meeting on Tuesday, April 11, at Akron Community Church.

President John Rice welcomed everyone.

Carol Landis and Theda Raffauf greeted 59 members and three guests to the meeting. The theme song “The More We Get Together” was sung, followed by “The (Continued On Page 4A)

The Denver Fair Committee believes strongly in giving back to those who support them, not only during fair week, but year round. After being blessed with beautiful weather and phenomenal attendance at last year’s event, the committee has given $10,000 in total contributions to the following first responders and community organizations: Adamstown, Denver, Reamstown,

Reinholds, Schoeneck, Smokestown, and Stevens Fire Companies; Reamstown and Reinholds Ambulance Associations; as well as, the Denver Women’s Club for their never-ending work in the Denver Memorial Park; and the Cocalico Band Boosters for their Student Music Department performing at the fair year after year.

Historical Society Educational Program

The Historical Society of the Cocalico Valley (HSCV) announces that their next educational program, “Brass Bands of the Cocalico Valley” will be held Wednesday, April 26

at 7:00 p.m. at Holy Trinity Lutheran Church, 167 East Main Street, Ephrata.

Lowell Haws will discuss the origin and development of the brass/cornet band movement in the United States. His presentation will focus on eleven such musical organizations in the Cocalico Valley and their relevance to the area’s culture during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Nancy A. Kulp, 58, of Stevens, passed away at home on Wednesday, April 12, 2023, after a 7-year courageous battle with cancer. Born in Ephrata, she was a daughter of Clifford & Audrey (Reddig) Youndt and the loving wife to Douglas S. Kulp for 38 years.

Nancy grew up in Adamstown, a graduate of Cocalico High School, class of 1982. She then attended Shippensburg University and completed her degree in Social Studies Education at Millersville University in December of 1986. Nancy worked as a long-term substitute teacher for the Cocalico School District then

She was the wife of the late Harvey James (Jim) Cunningham.

Nancy had an eclectic music selection, enjoying concerts and artists such as Lyle Lovett, Eric Clapton, Van Morrison, & the Mavericks. She was a member of Swamp Lutheran Church where she had attended for over 20 years. Nancy was always interested in others and would carry on a conversation with great interest and encouragement. She was organized and tidy, positive and upbeat. Nancy was steadfast in her beliefs and stood up for what she felt was right. She was approachable, loving, and brightened the room with her smile.

The devotional leader for April was Pastor Eugene Weaver from Harvest Fellowship Church in Reamstown. Pastor Eugene talked about the pathway of life. Everyone also has a purpose in life, look at their accomplishments and failures. The number one thing is to believe in Jesus and show that to your children and grandchildren so they may follow and believe in God. God’s promise to everyone is that He is the provider, protector and holds our hand in all you do and say, even in the hard times you may go through.

Prayer is the best thing for healing the land and family and friends. Senior citizens carry lots of knowledge through their faith. They can face whatever with God. They can give wisdom, friendship, and love to younger individuals. Pastor Eugene gave a blessing to all attendees and also led prayer before the meal.

After the delicious meal, they were entertained by Mark Luckenbill, a singer from Mt. Penn, Berks County. Mark sang songs from all generations such as:

Jan’s Circle Of Friends Event

Join Jan’s Circle of Friends for a Wine and Cheese event on Saturday, May 6, from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. at Hillside Public House (Doneckers), 333 North State Street, Ephrata. The featured guest speakers will be representatives of Camp Connect, who received a grant from Jan’s Circle of Friends.

Camp Connect allows students to come together to learn new ways of dealing with their grief and meet other children and families who have experienced a smiliar loss. Specially trained counselors, nurses and college interns from across Berks County provide support with a one-to-one staff-to-staff ratio.

Calling all houseplant enthusiasts, in honor of Earth Day, the Lititz Public Library will be having a Houseplant Clipping Exchange during the week of Monday, April 17 through Saturday, April 22.

Healthy, pest-free plants of all sorts are welcome. Cuttings (also known as “starts”) and baby plants (“pups”), are also good to share. Some popular plants to swap are Pothos, Peace lily, Umbrella plant, Philodendron, Lucky bamboo, Flamingo flower, Spider plants, and Prayer plants.

Stop by the library and look for our houseplant clipping display in their back atrium. Bring in a clipping of a houseplant in water only. Place your clipping in a glass jar or wet paper towel for someone else to take, Take a clipping for yourself, and take it home to plant, grow, and love.

Berks History Center Free Admission

As if the kickoff to Berks History Center’s (BHC) Spring 2023 season was not exciting enough, the organization is thrilled to announce that as of Wednesday, March 1, all military veterans, activeduty personnel, and their guests can enjoy free admission to BHC for a period of one calendar year.

Free admission is courtesy of a generous monetary donation that the BHC recently received from an individual who wishes to remain anonymous. The donation was later matched by BHC trustee and supporter, Lori Muhlenberg.

All veterans and activeduty personnel must show their military ID for the free admission until Friday, March 1, 2024.

The Brownstown Elementary School, along with the West Earl Lions, have awarded the last Student of the Month for the 2022-23 school year. The winner was Gabriel Reinford, son of Kendall and Elisa Reinford, and student of Ms. Lori Ditzler.

Ms. Ditzler sees how determined Gabe is and eager to learn despite many hard challenges in his life. When things get tough, Gabe perseveres! He is learning how to handle his feelings and has taught classmates how to say “yes” to the teacher when asked to do a job. He helps his classmates with a loving

heart and loves to give hugs.

A good listener, Gabe works on reading and math, and becoming responsible with his things and cleaning up. He shows respect to others

The Plumbline

“And, behold, the Lord stood upon a wall made by a plumbline, with a plumbline in His hand….Then said the Lord, Behold, I will set a plumbline in the midst of My people Israel: I will not again pass by them any more” (Amos 7:7,8).

As we compare the two verses of this vision, God identifies the “wall” as “My people Israel.” But what did

“the plumbline” represent?

A plumbline is a tool that is used even today by masons who wish to erect walls that are perfectly straight. A simple weight at the end of a string is suspended alongside the wall as it is being constructed, to ensure that it is being built straight, and at a perfect right angle to the gravitational pull of the earth. Construction workers know that bowed or leaning walls are easily toppled (Psa. 62:3).

Since our text tells us that this “wall” that represents Israel was “made by a plumbline,” we believe the plumbline to be the Law of Moses. It was the Law that defined Israel as a nation, and its perfect code of

righteousness ensured that Israel was built in accord with the perfectly upright standard of the very righteousness of God. Here in Amos 7, God is reapplying the plumbline

standard of the Law to Israel to show Amos how far his nation had shifted away from the perfect standard with which she had been constructed, and why He could no longer “pass by

Today in the dispensation of Grace, of course, God is not dealing with Israel or any other nation, but rather with individual members of the Body of Christ. In the epistles of Paul we read of how in Christ we too have been formed in accord with the perfect standard of the Law (II Cor. 5:21), and that the righteousness of the Law is given to us as a free gift of God’s grace through faith (Rom. 3:21-26; 10:4; I Cor. 1:30). Thus when believers today wish to apply a standard to our lives to check to see if we have drifted from who God made us in Christ,

we look not to the Law, but to the epistles of the Apostle Paul.

We close with a very practical admonition. Every builder knows that when a wall falls, it always falls in the direction in which it is leaning. If the reader has ever wondered about the harm in an occasional drink of an alcoholic beverage, or the danger of seemingly “harmless” flirtations with immorality, it should be remembered that Christians are like walls—they too always fall in the direction in which they are leaning! Let us thank God for the plumbline of His grace, and may we determine as never before to walk worthy of Him.

Oral History Club

The World War II Oral History Club is meeting at a new venue: VFW Post 2435 in Columbia, on Tuesday, April 25 at 7:00 p.m. Charles Brooking, a PT Boat Gunner in the Pacific will be the guest speaker. He enlisted in the Navy when he was 17, with his father’s permission and saw combat duty near the Solomon Islands and Guadalcanal.

During WWII, the now 96-year-old Bloomsburg resident manned twin .50 caliber machine guns on PT223, PT-619, PT-621, and PT-617. He served two years active/combat service and later eight years in the U.S. Navy Reserves. Come join them as Charles shares his very interesting story.

American Cancer Society Presents Bark For Life And Auction

June Garner, 89, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, April 11, 2023.

June was born in Ephrata to the late Lloyd and Lillian (Zell) Peiffer.

She was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Donald “Bud” Garner; sister, Peggy (Harold) Rupp, and brother, John Peiffer of Lititz.

June graduated from Ephrata High School in 1951.

June, along with her husband Bud, was instrumental in assisting the Hocking family with the publication of the first issue of The Shopping News back in April 1965. She worked until midnight mixing glue and hand labeling all of the issues for mailing. June retired from Hocking Printing and The Shopping News in 1995.

She was a member of Grace E. C. Church in Ephrata and The Friendly Circle.

June enjoyed traveling on bus trips, the outdoors, and shopping.

June is survived by her children: Linda, wife of Byron Gricius of Green Valley, AZ; Cindy, wife of Kerry Moyer of Ephrata; and Tom Garner, husband of Kathy (Cabala) of Lancaster; grandson, Matthew (Carla) Moyer of Denver; three great grandchildren - Micah, Reid, and Claire; and sisters, Jane Allen of Indianapolis, IN, and Carole, wife of Joel Hiestand of Ephrata. A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date. Kindly omit flowers.

Relay For Life of Lancaster County is proud to bring Bark For Life to New Fellowship Church for the first time this year. Bark For Life will feature a Strut Your Mutt Parade, doggie games, contests, giveaways, demos by a local Search and Rescue team, as well as

West Earl Township is seeking a qualified applicant for the Road Department. This full-time position is responsible for general maintenance of township roads, parks, and properties. The position requires experience in the operation of equipment including but not limited to dump trucks, excavators, loaders, tractors, attachments, and the use of a variety of hand and power tools. A mechanical background is a plus. Current Class A or B CDL license is preferred but training is available. Evan Horning

8th Grade

Evan Horning is a 13-yearold in 8th grade at Hinkletown Mennonite School. He lives with his parents, Lewis and Amy Horning, in Ephrata along with his brothers, Caleb and Luke. He goes to Metzler Mennonite Church.

Evan is the kind of person that would be active for hours at a time, either playing games or helping around his family’s farm.

Evan is a very adventurous person who enjoys doing different activities either by himself or with his friends and family. Evan loves to ride his dirt bike around his family’s farm. He also loves fishing and going to the cabin with his family. He also enjoys swimming. One of the activities he has fun doing in the pool is keep away. He also loves to play basketball. Mr. Weaver, his gym teacher said, “Evan is a positive team player and does a tremendous job at working hard at the game of basketball. Evan has a strong work ethic because that pushes his teammates to work harder.” Some of his classmates had things to say about him, like “Evan is down to earth” and “Evan is cool and I like going to his house.”

Evan also likes to help out on his parents’ farm with different chores. He drives the tractor and mows the meadows. He also uses the ripper to rip up the dirt in the fields. Evan also herds the cows for his dad, as well as scrapes up their poop. Evan enjoys helping out on his farm and likes to be close to the animals, especially his dog named Little Will.

Evan is a fun and creative person as well as a great friend. He has a great attitude and is super funny. Evan is a great asset to the Hinkletown community.

Karson Zimmerman

Junior

Karson Zimmerman has been attending Ephrata Mennonite School since kindergarten, and he is currently a junior. He really appreciates that the school offers a good Christian environment.

He enjoys all the good times and memories that he has had. One extracurricular activity that he is involved in is MAT. They go and sing at different local churches and they went on an out-of-state tour.

His favorite class is Consumer Math because of the laid back environment and the great people that are in it.

Outside of school, his life involves attending Lincoln Mennonite Church in Ephrata. He also enjoys farming and making money whenever he can.

Some of his favorite hobbies are working on clapped out cars, shooting guns, and riding quads.

If he could change one thing in this world, he would make wars end and create peace between everyone.

Mateo

His greatest accomplishment is changing the clutch in his Ford Focus ST. He admires his dad because of his strong work ethic and his close relationship with God. Written by:
