Wreath Laying And Ceremony

The Vietnam Veterans of America and Associates Chapter 1008 of Lancaster, PA will hold a Memorial Day weekend wreath laying ceremony on Saturday, May 27 at 1:00 p.m., rain or shine, at Greenwood Cemetery (South Queen Street, Lancaster) at the Vietnam Veteran Memorial.

Recently, 1,000 hygiene kits filled with toothpaste, mouthwash, floss, hair combs, hand sanitizer, washcloths, and other hygiene products were distributed to support underserved individuals throughout the community.

The kits were distributed to three local nonprofit organizations ­ CrossNet Ministries, Ephrata Area Social Services, and Water Street Rescue Mission.

The kit­building initiative was part of Henry Schein’s “We Care Global Challenge” a company­wide initiative in which Team Schein Members at 14 Company locations in six countries assemble kits to “help health happen” for people living in underserved, at­risk, and remote communities.

Course instructors will include BHC Assistant Director, Bradley Smith of Schaefferstown; Schoenersville native and former University of Pennsylvania faculty member, Kevin Sterner; and Ethan Rode, a professional linguist from Mohnton.

They will be reading the names of the recently deceased VVA members from May 2022 to present. The public is invited to attend. Family and friends are welcome to participate as they encourage memories to be shared. The memorial and grounds are maintained by the chapter.

Annual Mohnton Memorial Day Parade

The 63rd annual Mohnton Area Memorial Day Parade will be held on Monday, May 29, starting at 9:00 a.m. from the VFW Post 9045 Home on West Wyomissing Avenue, Mohnton. The parade will feature the Reading Buccaneers Drum & Bugle

Corps, P.O.S of A Mohnton Camp 211, Boy and Girl Scout Troops, local auto clubs and businesses, Mohnton Borough representatives, area police and fire departments, etc.

The parade will proceed from the VFW Post Home to Walnut Street to North Church Street and end at the Mohnsville Cemetery where the memorial service will begin at 10:15 a.m.

Larry Graeff will be Master of Ceremonies. The Speaker is Randy Plumber,

Administrative OfficerIndiantown Gap National Cemetery. The Rev. Robert W. Shuey of Zion E.C. Church, Mohnton, will give the Invocation and Benediction.

After the service, the Reading Buccaneers will present their 2023 program on the Mohnton Playground at noon.

Annual Reamstown Memorial Day Service

The annual Reamstown Memorial Day service will be held on Sunday, May 28 at 4:30 p.m. This solemn tradition occurs at the war memorial in the Reamstown Park, 11 East Church Street, Reamstown. This outdoor service pays homage to Americans who have sacrificed their lives in defense of the nation. There will be music, laying of the memorial wreaths, taps and rifle salute and a distinguished speaker.

Please bring your family (especially children) and lawn chairs to this very important event. The VFW poppy queen will be collecting donations for the 101­year­old Buddy Poppy Program.
