I’m planning my second wedding. My first was a smashing success by most accounts. The marriage, less so. My second wedding is going to be more than a smashing success, because I’ve learned some things. When I reflect back on the weakest points of my first wedding, it was the DIY and cost-cutting decisions that I regret.
This time I will:
• Not print invites at home. They may still do the job, but it’s not worth the headache or underwhelming results. • Let the professionals do the floral arranging.
• Spend the money on a photographer whose work I love.
After choosing the right partner to marry and filling the guest list up with people you both cherish, the most impactful decisions you’ll make for the big day are the vendors you choose to hire. Here’s a quick checklist of the types of vendors and venues you may want to partner with and reserve to make sure your wedding day is remembered for all of the right reasons: • Venues: rehearsal dinner, ceremony, reception, day-after brunch
• Band or DJ for reception
• Hair and makeup artists
• Shuttle transportation for guests.
• Officiant
• Hotel for out-of-town guests
• Wedding night hotel room for bride and groom • Photographer • Caterer • Baker
• Rental services for tables, chairs, tents, linens, photo booths, etc. • Transportation for the bridal party to arrive in style (carriage, limo, trolley, fancy car). • Invitation designer
• Travel agent to help you plan your honeymoon and/or destination wedding.
• Musicians for ceremony and/or cocktail hour You’ll also need to visit stores for: the bridal dress, veil or headpiece, bridesmaid dresses, flower girl dress, tuxedos, accessories, favors, gifts for your wedding party, gifts for your parents, a guestbook and other reception odds and ends, and to register for gifts.
