Discover unique, affordable treasures at Rochester’s family-owned gift and home décor destination. “We like to keep our displays fresh and simple,” Wendy Byers, owner of The Mouse gift and home decor shop tells Shop Rochester. “There are so many things in here, it’s a daily challenge. “But it’s a happy challenge,” she adds, explaining how fun it is to work side-by-side with her mom, Jeanne DeBruin, who started the store 28 years ago this month at the same location.“One of us will get an idea and then, before you know it, we’re creating a whole new display,” Wendy says. Recently they remodeled a large section of the store with many of HGTV’s ‘Fixer Upper’ looks, which coincide with the neutral palette and natural look that has always appealed to the mother-daughter team. Their 6,000 sq. ft. shop located in the Miracle Mile Shopping Center is one of the largest familyowned local gift and home décor shops in the area. It’s the place that Rochester-area residents can visit knowing that they’ll discover something delightful and unexpected. The Mouse has deep roots in the community, a fact that Jeanne and Wendy take seriously. For example, supporting Rochester’s Channel One food bank is their goal every ‘Mouse Monday’ when customers who bring in a food donation receive 30% off their purchases that day.
HGTV CONNECTION Jeanne and Wendy know a little something about having fun, too. A SUPERSTORE INDEED! Local, family-owned Furniture Superstore offers quality in every sense of the word By Sarah Oslund The exterior of the old Menards building didn’t appear to have changed much since owners Jim Sather and Mark Byer opened the northwest Rochester location last year, but when I walked inside Furniture Superstore, the interior took my breath away. “‘Beautiful’ is the word that we hear most commonly,” Sather said when asked about the reaction he usually gets when a potential customer first enters the store. “But we haven’t even skimmed the surface of all the things we want to do here.” Plans for refacing the exterior of the building are among the improvements they will make in the future. Looking around the interior however, the word “beautiful” captures the space perfectly, and it was difficult to imagine what improvements could be needed. The store’s 90,000 sq. ft. showroom is grouped into tastefully designed room settings that would impress even the most finicky shopper. There were options as far as the eye could see, but Furniture Superstore takes customer service beyond that which you’d find at your typical large furniture store. “In the unlikely event that someone can’t find what they’re looking for in the store, we can do a special order,” Sather said. “This sectional we’re sitting on, I can get for you in 400 different fabrics.”

be confused: Furniture Superstore doesn’t sell factory seconds. “People often mistake the meaning behind our name ‘Furniture Superstore Factory Outlet’ to mean that what we’re selling isn’t new,” said Sather. “In fact, the name was meant to convey that we buy direct from the factory, so there isn’t a middle man affecting how we price our products.” The store is in the process of dropping the “Factory Outlet” from its name to help minimize this confusion. “We’re here to solve the customer’s problem,” Sather concluded. “Not just sell what we have.” I was certainly happy to hear that. I can’t wait to see how that sectional we were sitting on during the interview looks in my family room.
