Can Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy make you feel like you again? The body’s hormones hold the keys to everything – your moods, sleep, immune system and digestive health. That means when your hormones are out of whack, you are out of whack.
While doctors may prescribe antidepressants or provide traditional hormone replacement treatment for pre-menopause, fullblown menopause and post-menopause, another option being explored is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT). Bioidentical hormones are manmade hormones created from plant estrogens that are chemically identical to those the human body produces. Estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone are the most common hormones replicated. The question is - Is BHRT safe? The treatments are not yet approved by the Federal and Drug Administration (FDA), but those administering treatments and patients receiving them are believers.

Elizabeth Vogstrom, a BHRT specialist, said she worked in traditional medicine for more than 20 years. It wasn’t until her own experience with post-partum depression that she started questioning how hormone imbalance was treated. With BHRT, Vogstrom said a full work up of hormones is conducted and reviewed. For those who qualify, a personalized treatment plan is created. “It’s all natural, and specific to each individual,” Vogstrom explained. “Someone may need more progesterone, while another may be lacking the proper testosterone levels. We work to help our patients achieve healthy aging.” Vogstrom said once a plan is created, an in-office procedure takes place where a pellet the size of a grain of rice is inserted into the buttocks. The bioidentical hormone then releases the needed hormones into the body for three months. In that time, Vogstrom said tests are conducted, levels are checked and work to achieve a full hormonal balance continues. “After a year, we see all the results come to fruition,” she said. “It’s all about achieving a quality of life. Aging doesn’t have to be so difficult.”’ For anyone considering BHRT, remember it’s fairly new to the market, has side effects and might be something to discuss with your doctor first.
