STAY FOCUSED – EYE CARE MATTERS According to the U.S. Census, there are about 75 million Baby Boomers in the United States. That means there are about 150 million eyes in need of regular exams and care. Let’s face it, as each decade came around, you found yourself holding the newspaper a little further away, maybe even squinting to try and read regular text on a printed page. Some of that just comes with age whether we like it or not. However, Baby Boomers mustn’t lose focus. Eye care is just as important as the regular visits to the doctor. The reason is simple – early intervention means saving your vision. New tests, technology and equipment have given Optometrists the ability to track changes in the retina and keep track of aging patients. When visiting your Optometrist, some tests to request include: Visual field testing: This test measures the range of the peripheral or side vision to assess blind spots and vision loss. The test creates a computerized map of your visual field to identify possible deficiencies. Optomap Retinal Exam: This provides a view of the retina. This test can detect issues such as retinal tears, detachments and macular degeneration before there are symptoms. Diabetics and patients with high blood pressure may not realize there is pressure on the retina. The Otomap can detect that pressure. Digital Retinal Imaging & OCT: This cutting-edge digital imaging technology is one of the best tests used for early detection and diagnosing of diabetic retinopathy, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Corneal mapping: This is a non-invasive medical imaging technique for mapping the surface of the cornea, and checking the quality of vision. By: Thelma Grimes
