Details: To some, the fields and farms of the Upper Midwest all look the same, but to the people who have struggled to raise families and make a living from the soil, each farm is a “small kingdom” with a rich and often troubled history. Join author John Hildebrand at the History Center as he weaves a narrative that is at once an elegy for a vanishing way of life and a celebration of the tenacious and deeply held American values that have made today’s way of life possible.

Details: Doug Duren will present on Sharing the Land: A Conservation Cooperators Network, which seeks to connect landowners with access seekers. Sharing the Land is built on the idea of trading work for access. This project is based on the Riley Game Cooperative, which Leopold started. We’re currently working with Savage Arms and Vortex Optics on a number of short films on Riley, Sharing the Land and The Duren Farm.

Frankenstuffie Class with Nicole Havekost

These wild stuffed creatures are known as “Frankenstuffies”! Join Artist Nicole Havekost for a family-friendly, all ages, Frankenstuffie making class at the Rochester Art Center. All sewing skill levels are welcome, from beginner to advanced! Pre-registration and payment required. The workshop ticket includes all materials for the creation of one Frankenstuffie.

Details: The season finale reflects on the past, soothes our sorrows, and looks to the future with hope for peace. We’ll begin with Fanny Mendelssohn, Felix’s older sister—a pianist and composer in her own right. We’ll uncover her story and work before contrasting Mozart’s early and late compositions. His early Symphony No. 9 is a high energy piece written in his teen years, followed by the Requiem, unfinished before his death and completed by his assistant. Beginning with the words “Grant us rest,” the Requiem is Mozart’s greatest choral work and a masterpiece of all time.
