Whether you want a meal with a lake view, a beer that reminds you of home, or a little taste of Scotland, Whistle Binkies is the place to go. Its north (“olde world pub”) and south (“on the lake”) locations each offer large menu selections, daily food and drink specials, and gawdy lists of beer selections. Owner Randy Lehman oversees the north venue, which is well known for its large beer selection (over 450).

“Rochester has visitors from around the world and when traveling, finding a little piece of home can be comforting, or simply trying something new can be rewarding,” Lehman said.

Rochester from NW to SE

New in town? Here for a few days…or maybe a longer stay?

To help you get a lay of the land, here’s a quick primer. There are four quadrants to town. Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast. The quadrants are divided by Broadway going North and South, and Center street going East to West. Each quadrant has its own culture and charm. Here’s an int introduction to the city’s most prominent locations.

NW

Rochester's largest & fastest growing quadrant.

This fast-growing quadrant is home to the shopping district on Highway 52 between 37th and 51st St NW. You'll find the best sledding hill in town in Judd Park at 3812 3rd St NW, the newest elementary school (Gibbs Elementary), computer giant IBM and proud John Marshall High Rocket fans in this large part of town.

NE

e hills of Rochester. The northeast quadrant of Rochester has beautiful rolling hills and is a favorite part of town for people who like to spend weekends boating on the Mississippi and Lake Pepin. This is our second smallest quadrant and is largely residential. You'll find Quarry Hill Nature Center, the National Volleyball Center and proud Century High School Panther fans in this cozy part of town.

SW

Downtown and shopping. The famous Mayo Brothers called this area

home, and you can still visit Dr. Charles Mayo's home, The Mayowood Mansion. This quadrant is home to the downtown shopping area Shoppes at University Square and Apache Mall. The Rochester Golf and Country Club as well as Willow Creek Golf Course are found in SW Rochester as well as the Rochester International Airport.

SE

Small, fun and aaordable. The southeast Rochester quadrant is where

you'll find the Rochester Public Library, Olmsted County Fairgrounds and Hockey Complex, Rochester Civic Theater, Mayo Convention Center, Rochester Community and Technical College and our football, softball and baseball complexes.

ONLINE GROCERY SERVICES

For pickup or delivery, shopping made easy By Pat Garry

Looking for groceries and everyday essentials without the hassle of going to the store? Online grocery delivery to the rescue.

Visitors are often in the city without a vehicle, which makes it difficult to get to a grocery store for basic necessities. Through several local delivery options, including Instacart, Hy-Vee Aisles Online and Shipt, shoppers can have items delivered in as little as one hour.

Using Instacart, shoppers order from their favorite retailers, including Cub Foods, Costco, Natural Grocers, Petco, and Hy-Vee stores, and goods are delivered straight to their hotel or home. Customers shop at instacart.com or using the mobile app on their phone, select their city and store, add items to a virtual cart, then choose a delivery window (within one hour or up to five days in advance) and check out. The customer will get a notification when the shopper is shopping and then arrives for delivery. For orders of $35 or more, the delivery fee is $5.99. Consumers may also sign-up for the Instacart Express membership, which enables unlimited, free, same-day delivery on orders of $35 or more. Scott Holloway, general manager at Instacart, said that they have seen a tremendous demand in the Rochester area. The Instacart staff works with local retailers to provide the freshest, highest quality groceries to customers.

hy-vee.com/grocery • Instacart.com • Shipt.com11

All four Rochester Hy-Vee stores offer online shopping and curbside pickup with Aisles Online orders. Delivery is available from the Barlow and West Circle Drive locations. The online shopping option retains benefits of in-store shopping, such as weekly specials, digital coupons and Fuel Saver + Perks TM discounts. Customers use their hy-vee.com account to select their preferred store before shopping that store’s inventory. They may also create shopping lists and note favorites.

SAVE TIME. SHOP ONLINE

When the order is placed, an Aisles Online personal shopper hand-selects the products. Groceries are kept in climatecontrolled totes until they are loaded into the customer’s vehicle or delivered. Store pickup and home delivery are both free with a $100 order; orders less than $100 have a $2.95 fee for pickup and $4.95 fee for delivery. Additionally, Hy-Vee is partnered with two national online grocery delivery services, Instacart and Shipt, in an effort to expand its delivery footprint.

hy-vee.com/grocery

DELIVERY OR CURBSIDE PICK-UP AVAILABLE.

hy-vee.com/grocery • Instacart.com • Shipt.com

Shipt is a membership-based online grocery marketplace that offers delivery to members for $99 per year. Order through the local store and even connect with your shopper via text to make adjustments and get live updates from the aisles. “Delivery is available in Rochester and several surrounding communities,” said Sarah Thacker, Hy-Vee marketing coordinator. While it might seem unfathomable, the idea of sitting in your hotel room and shopping for last-minute items, hard-to-find foods, or ingredients for tonight’s meal— from your hotel room—is a convenient reality.

Whistle Binkies Largest Beer Selection, Braggable Bloody Mary Bar By Pat Garry

Whether you want a meal with a lake view, a beer that reminds you of home, or a little taste of Scotland, Whistle Binkies is the place to go. Its north (“olde world pub”) and south (“on the lake”) locations each offer large menu selections, daily food and drink specials, and gawdy lists of beer selections. Owner Randy Lehman oversees the north venue, which is well known for its large beer selection (over 450).

“Rochester has visitors from around the world and when traveling, finding a little piece of home can be comforting, or simply trying something new can be rewarding,” Lehman said.

Whistle Binkies Old World Pub • 3120 Wellner Drive NE • 507.289.9200

Best Bloody, Delicious Dinner There is a Bloody Mary for every taste, but finding the best-tasting one can be an arduous mission. Binkies offers an elaborate version of the popular drink. Fashioned from a recipe including tomato juice, horseradish, Worcestershire and black pepper, the award-winning concoction also contains a secret ingredient from the Caribbean to give it an extra kick.

Several menu items are worth highlighting. Scotch Eggs: two hard-boiled eggs wrapped in pork sausage, rolled in breadcrumbs and fried to perfection. Fish & Chips: generous portions of cod, beer battered with Rusty Truck Ale, fried til golden brown, and served with English chips. Chicken Stir Fry: sautéed chicken, peppers, onions, broccoli, snow peas, mushrooms, carrots, and bean sprouts, all stir-fried with garlic, ginger, Thai chilies and authentic Hoisin sauces and served with steamed Jasmine rice and an egg roll.

Binkies serves ever-changing daily lunch and dinner specials, which can be viewed online. Sunday brunch is presented from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and includes scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, French toast, waffles, omelets, hash browns, hand-carved meat, select hot entrees, fresh fruit, cinnamon rolls, biscuits and gravy and a variety of homemade desserts.

“Both pubs offer gorgeous, colorful patios for dining, relaxing and enjoying the beautiful weather. Be sure to stop by either location and be ready to have a great time,” said Craig Kangas, manager of the south venue.

Octoberfest September 24–30 Oktoberfest, North Pub. German-themed dinner specials begin at 5 p.m. each night. Musicmeisters Polka Band performs Wednesday, September 26 , 7 p.m. October 1–7 Oktoberfest, South Pub. German-themed dinner specials begin at 5 p.m. each night. Musicmeisters Polka Band performs Wednesday, October 3 , 7 p.m. Both pubs feature a different Oktoberfest beer each night during their respective weeks. They are served in half-liter or liter mugs at a discounted price. I’ve had the privilege of dining at both Whistle Binkies locations, and I’ve managed to eat maybeone-third of the items on the menu over time. The ambiance, both indoor and out, is comfortable, and the staff is vigilant and knowledgeable. The food is delectable, top-quality and simply fun to eat.

MAGICAL

SILVER LAKE When Rochester was named one of the best places to live by Money Magazine in the 90s, apparently humans weren’t the only ones listening. Rochester is home to one of the largest geese populations in North America. While many visitors and residents are still discovering the outstanding liveability of Rochester, these giant Canada Geese have known about it for quite some time. In the early 1900s, hunting and a loss of habitat virtually eliminated the Canada Goose population. Until 1950, the species was believed to be extinct. In 1962, a small flock was found enjoying Minnesota winters at beautiful Silver Lake Park. These geese, donated by a Mayo Clinic patient, lured some of the few

Improved game laws and habitat restoration have brought the species back to life. Evidently, word travels fast through the goose grapevine. Today, Rochester’s goose population numbers 30,000 to 35,000 during the peak of fall migration. Many decide to settle in for the winter after discovering

Host to Rochester’s Annual Visitors part of the Rochester community and they have been featured in many publications. Gary Blum, a Rochester resident, has earned international recognition for his “goose poop artwork.” While these year-round residents are generally well-respected neighbors, there are unique challenges to hosting thousands of feathered friends. Due to concerns of overpopulation, the Silver Lake Buffer Project is installing 30 -foot -wide vegetative buffers of native grasses and plants in an attempt to clean up the water. Once the five-year projectis complete, the buffers will act as filters to reduce the amount of pollution that reaches the lake. Residents and visitors will continue to enjoy Silver Lake during the installation. The lake is not only a sanctuary for Canada Geese, but also offers trails for biking and walking, fishing piers, paddle boats, and canoes. that the ice-free water remains open and warm, thanks to the local Silver Lake Power Plant. The Branta canadensis maxima (translation: Giant Canada Geese) are big. With a wingspan of up to 6 feet and weight of up to 14 pounds, the geese are a sight to behold. The males and females have different “honks” and the females are typically lighter in color. Visiting and feeding the geese at Silver Lake has become a beloved tradition for many residents and visitors. The special flock has become an integral

Though visitors will be discouraged from feeding the geese in the future they remain one of Rochester’s prized attractions. The magnificent creatures add a touch of magic to an evening walk around the lake. As Rochester continues to be well-known to many national and international visitors for Mayo Clinic, IBM, and a host of hightech businesses, the geese at Silver Lake will continue to set the scene off the beaten path. 59

Rochester is a unique city with a welcoming Midwest flavor, a small-town feel and an evergrowing sophistication. Nestled in the Zumbro River Valley, Rochester was discovered in 1854 by a government surveying party from Winona. Population at the time was 1,500 (30 times the original 50 settlers after an advertising campaign succeeded in extolling the land’s virtues). Rochester has been expanding and developing ever since, boasting a world-class medical center, expanding job market, cutting edge technology, excellent schools and a livable, safe environment. Money Magazine frequently votes Rochester “Best Place to Live in the U.S.” Since the first votes in the 1990’s, the city has grown 33 percent from a population of 86,000 to 114,011 plus (2016 U.S Census Bureau). The city is also considered a “Best Small City For Working Women.” Unemployment is low and salaries are higher than average, with women making 90 percent of men’s salaries.

RECESSION RESISTANT

As things change, some things stay the same, and it’s all good for Rochester. In 1961, Sales Management magazine listed Rochester as one of its “markets on the move,” pointing out

that the city was moving forward while much of the country was in a recession. Urban and economic theorist Richard Florida recently ranked Rochester among the top 20 metros with projected job growth in “creative class” jobs—health care, science, technology, law, education, the arts and media—through 2020 (The Atlantic). Rochester’s quality of life and prosperous business climate make it a desirable place to live and work. Cost of living is 7 percent lower than the U.S. average. Its commute is the shortest—average 14 minutes—of the nation’s 300 largest cities. There’s an excellent park system for walking, biking and outdoor family activities. “Historic Bluff Country” to the south, the Mississippi River to the east, rolling farmlands to the west, and the Twin Cities to the north border Rochester and neighboring communities.

MAYO CLINIC, IBM

A devastating tornado struck Rochester in 1883. William Worrall Mayo, the country doctor, sought help from the Sisters of St. Francis to care for over 100 injured patients. When the crisis passed, Mother Alfred Moes offered to raise money to build a hospital if Dr. Mayo and his sons, Will and Charlie, would serve as surgeons. Today, Mayo Clinic is the largest not-forprofit medical center in the world. The Clinic employs nearly 34,600 people at its

By Katherine Shine

City on the Move Rochester campus. Approximately 2,400 are physicians and scientists. The opening of Mayo’s Gonda Building in 2001 created the largest interconnected medical facility in the world. Opened in 2015, a $188 million, 100,000-square-foot proton beam therapy center offers innovative cancer treatments. IBM, like Mayo Clinic, is an “anchor” company in Rochester. “Big Blue” broke ground in 1956. Employees number around 2,790 (2013), two times more than the number of employees in the 1950s. The main campus has grown to 3.1 million square feet, more than half the size of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Other major employers include Charter Communications, City of Rochester, Federal Medical Center, Kahler Hotels, McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Olmsted County, Olmsted Medical Center, and Seneca Foods.

INNOVATION, GROWTH, INVESTMENT

Destination Medical Center (DMC) is the biggest and boldest expansion plan in Rochester’s 164-year history. With the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the city’s backyard, DMC is a $5.6 billion economic development initia-

tive promoting Rochester as a premier global destination for health and wellness over the next 20 years. Three million people a year visit Rochester, primarily for Mayo Clinic. The goal of DMC is to double the number of visitors to 6 to 7 million. Downtown development has been a topic of conversation since the famous Chateau Theater opened its doors in 1927. DMC plans include additional downtown Mayo facilities, office space, biotech and pharmaceutical firms. Housing, restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments will be needed to accommodate visitors and the employees required to fill over 30,000 new jobs. DMC, according to plan, will have a positive affect not only Rochester, but also Olmsted County and the state of Minnesota. In addition to the $585 million in state money, Mayo Clinic, private investors and the City of Rochester will invest nearly $6 billion. With changes on its horizon, Rochester must continue fine-tuning its goals to meet the inevitable challenges ahead: aging and retiring Baby Boomers, diversity, affordable housing for students and job seekers, transportation, crime and population increases. If history is an indicator, Rochester’s growth will continue on a positive, upward trend.

OXBOW PARK, ZOLLMAN ZOO

Spend a day or night in the natural world - By Pat Garry If you love animals, have children, or just enjoy the great outdoors, then there’s really no excuse to not visit Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo. The zoo is anchored in the middle of the 600-acre park, and it showcases circa 40 different Minnesota-native species, including all animal classes: fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.

Hiking, camping, picnics and a zoo Oxbow Park/Zollman Zoo is located on the south branch of the Zumbro River, three miles north of Byron. That creates a perfect landscape for viewing wildlife in the park at four picnic areas and along eight miles of hiking trails that wind through the woods and prairies.

about the natural world. “The park is fortunate to have the non-profit organization, Friends of Oxbow, to raise funds that allow the park and zoo to expand and enable us to build bigger, better zoo habitats,” said Clarissa Schrooten, naturalist.

The park also features a campground, a youth-group campground, and the Path of Imagination—a two-acre natural playscape. Park staff schedules weekend educational programs for the public to drop in and learn

Otters and Bears and Raptors, oh my!

At the popular otter exhibit, visitors can watch them slide down the waterfall in to the pool.

Of course, the animals are the main stars at the zoo. Home to more than 70 animal residents, the spacious complex has something for everyone to enjoy. The otter exhibit is a huge attraction. Observers watch in earnest to see the otters show off their graceful maneuvers as they swim in a close-up, viewable pool. Folks can watch the otters slide down the waterfall and into the pond just below. The large animals are also a big deal. “Everyone enjoys watching the black bear behave naturally, while she forages around her exhibit at feeding time, scouring the exhibit for hidden fruits and vegetables,” said Schrooten. The birds of prey exhibit offers eight species of raptors, all native to Minnesota, including the nation’s symbol—the bald eagle. The timber wolves steal the attention when they start howling, and the bison, deer and elk can also be viewed outside of regular zoo hours.

Plan a visit Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo offer almost any outdoor enthusiast a chance to pursue his or her favorite activity: hiking, camping, fishing and picnics. One of the picnic areas also has playground equipment, and a ball field for public use. Oxbow campgrounds have campsites available, with running water, restrooms and showers. “It’s very exciting to see people of all ages who are anxious to learn, and it is reassuring to hear their comments on how all of us can improve our behaviors to protect our environment and its entire living species,” Schrooten said.

Bison, deer and elk can be viewed outside of regular zoo hours.

Come and be part of the nearly 50,000 visitors who visit the grounds annually. It’s your unique opportunity to pack a lunch, soak-up the sunrays, and talk to the animals, all in a beautiful, rural setting.

"Open-ended play" is the mantra at LARK Toys. Owned by Miranda and Scott Gray-Burlingame and Kathy and Ron Gray, this toy store was voted the best in Minnesota and one of the top 10 toy stores in the world. It offers toys that stimulate imaginations and leave room for kids to create from their minds and hearts. Those toys include wooden pull and push toys (made in the LARK workshop), basic wooden blocks, LEGOS, puppets, cooperative board games, and timeless jigsaw puzzles. Too, LARK features active toys such as kites, balls, Ninja lines, and unique reading selections in the large bookstore. Teens and adults can also enjoy the Curiosity Shoppe, filled with "grown-up" merchandise, including retro, enamel pop culture pins, phone accessories, greeting cards, three lines of clothing, artistic purses, weather vanes and more. The good folks at LARK make their own fudge in-house and boast an amazing antique toy museum. The solid wood hand-carved LARK Carousel is a work of art that people of all ages can view and ride, and the 18-hole mini golf course with waterfalls and a play-through cave is fun for all. The venue offers a cafe with snacks and sandwiches. "Our intention is to provide a welcoming place for people to relax, refresh, and play for a while," said Kathy Gray. We have so much fun sharing the joy of LARK with all of our customers from near and far."

Long on history and rich in heritage: Bald Eagles, Native America, Hollywood and More! Wabasha is the oldest city on the entire upper Mississippi River and has been occupied continuously since 1826. U.S. Government records and “The 2nd Treaty of Prairie du Chien” (1830) conclusively establish Wabasha to be the oldest town in Minnesota, established 1830. The city is named in honor of an Indian Chief of the Sioux Nation, Chief Wa-pa-shaw. Wabasha’s historic district has more than 50 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Take our historic walking tour and discover the stories that have made this town so unique. Eagles are of abundance during the winter months, and they nest here year round. The National Eagle Center in downtown Wabasha houses live bald eagles and is open for programs and special groups. Visitors come from all over the world for a unique “Nose to Beak” experience with America’s National Symbol of Freedom – the Bald Eagle. America became enamored with Wabasha as a result of the very popular movies “Grumpy Old Men” and “Grumpier Old Men,” starring Jack Lemmon and Walter Matthau, written by a young man whose grandfather lived here and thought our historic river town was perfect for the story of the two retired widowers, Max and John, competing for the affections of Ariel (Ann-Margret). Wabasha celebrates the “Grumpy Old Men Festival” on the last Saturday of February each year, and visitors enjoy dining at Slippery’s Bar & Grill all year long. Once you visit Wabasha, you’ll want to return for a day, a week, or a lifetime.
