Rochester from NW to SE
New in town? Here for a few days…or maybe a longer stay?
To help you get a lay of the land, here’s a quick primer. There are four quadrants to town. Northwest, Northeast, Southwest, and Southeast. The quadrants are divided by Broadway going North and South, and Center street going East to West. Each quadrant has its own culture and charm. Here’s an int introduction to the city’s most prominent locations.
NW
Rochester's largest & fastest growing quadrant.
This fast-growing quadrant is home to the shopping district on Highway 52 between 37th and 51st St NW. You'll find the best sledding hill in town in Judd Park at 3812 3rd St NW, the newest elementary school (Gibbs Elementary), computer giant IBM and proud John Marshall High Rocket fans in this large part of town.
NE
e hills of Rochester. The northeast quadrant of Rochester has beautiful rolling hills and is a favorite part of town for people who like to spend weekends boating on the Mississippi and Lake Pepin. This is our second smallest quadrant and is largely residential. You'll find Quarry Hill Nature Center, the National Volleyball Center and proud Century High School Panther fans in this cozy part of town.
SW
Downtown and shopping. The famous Mayo Brothers called this area
home, and you can still visit Dr. Charles Mayo's home, The Mayowood Mansion. This quadrant is home to the downtown shopping area Shoppes at University Square and Apache Mall. The Rochester Golf and Country Club as well as Willow Creek Golf Course are found in SW Rochester as well as the Rochester International Airport.
SE
Small, fun and aaordable. The southeast Rochester quadrant is where
you'll find the Rochester Public Library, Olmsted County Fairgrounds and Hockey Complex, Rochester Civic Theater, Mayo Convention Center, Rochester Community and Technical College and our football, softball and baseball complexes.

FUN ATMOSPHERE & DELICIOUS FOOD

There are certain times when name-dropping is beneficial, especially when the name is Pappas, founders of Rochester’s famous Michael’s and Mantorville’s historic Hubbell House restaurants. Chef Chris Pappas, a fourth-generation restaurateur, and his wife, Sheila, own Pappy’s Place, a neighborhood kitchen and bar. Pappy’s serves up genuine Midwest fare with a flare, whether it be an appetizer, burger, pizza or entrée.
“Our focus is to serve our foods using the freshest, bestquality ingredients. I do my own spin on steaks, lots of different hamburgers, fish, ribs and daily made-from-scratch soups,” said Chris Pappas. The chef said his plan is to carry on his family tradition—to serve a quality dinner and a good drink at a fair price. Pappy’s most popular dinner specials are the Friday night fish fry, the Saturday night slow-roasted prime rib and the jumbo beer-battered shrimp. Pappy’s meats are fresh, and steaks are hand-cut on premises. “We only use the upper two-thirds meat on all our steaks and burgers,” the chef said. The restaurant’s soup-andsalad bar, included with all specials, is one of its most coveted attractions. It is difficult to find a comparable feature, where the chef and his crew scratch-cook all of their salads, soups and dressings.
Chef Chris Pappas, and Wife, Sheila, own Pappy’s Place. 29

Rochester is a unique city with a welcoming Midwest flavor, a small-town feel and an evergrowing sophistication. Nestled in the Zumbro River Valley, Rochester was discovered in 1854 by a government surveying party from Winona. Population at the time was 1,500 (30 times the original 50 settlers after an advertising campaign succeeded in extolling the land’s virtues). Rochester has been expanding and developing ever since, boasting a world-class medical center, expanding job market, cutting edge technology, excellent schools and a livable, safe environment. Money Magazine frequently votes Rochester “Best Place to Live in the U.S.” Since the first votes in the 1990’s, the city has grown 33 percent from a population of 86,000 to 114,011 plus (2016 U.S Census Bureau). The city is also considered a “Best Small City For Working Women.” Unemployment is low and salaries are higher than average, with women making 90 percent of men’s salaries.
RECESSION RESISTANT
As things change, some things stay the same, and it’s all good for Rochester. In 1961, Sales Management magazine listed Rochester as one of its “markets on the move,” pointing out
that the city was moving forward while much of the country was in a recession. Urban and economic theorist Richard Florida recently ranked Rochester among the top 20 metros with projected job growth in “creative class” jobs—health care, science, technology, law, education, the arts and media—through 2020 (The Atlantic). Rochester’s quality of life and prosperous business climate make it a desirable place to live and work. Cost of living is 7 percent lower than the U.S. average. Its commute is the shortest—average 14 minutes—of the nation’s 300 largest cities. There’s an excellent park system for walking, biking and outdoor family activities. “Historic Bluff Country” to the south, the Mississippi River to the east, rolling farmlands to the west, and the Twin Cities to the north border Rochester and neighboring communities.
MAYO CLINIC, IBM
A devastating tornado struck Rochester in 1883. William Worrall Mayo, the country doctor, sought help from the Sisters of St. Francis to care for over 100 injured patients. When the crisis passed, Mother Alfred Moes offered to raise money to build a hospital if Dr. Mayo and his sons, Will and Charlie, would serve as surgeons. Today, Mayo Clinic is the largest not-forprofit medical center in the world. The Clinic employs nearly 34,600 people at its

City on the Move Rochester campus. Approximately 2,400 are physicians and scientists. The opening of Mayo’s Gonda Building in 2001 created the largest interconnected medical facility in the world. Opened in 2015, a $188 million, 100,000-square-foot proton beam therapy center offers innovative cancer treatments. IBM, like Mayo Clinic, is an “anchor” company in Rochester. “Big Blue” broke ground in 1956. Employees number around 2,790 (2013), two times more than the number of employees in the 1950s. The main campus has grown to 3.1 million square feet, more than half the size of the Pentagon in Arlington, Virginia. Other major employers include Charter Communications, City of Rochester, Federal Medical Center, Kahler Hotels, McNeilus Truck & Manufacturing, Olmsted County, Olmsted Medical Center, and Seneca Foods.
INNOVATION, GROWTH, INVESTMENT
Destination Medical Center (DMC) is the biggest and boldest expansion plan in Rochester’s 164-year history. With the world-renowned Mayo Clinic in the city’s backyard, DMC is a $5.6 billion economic development initia-
tive promoting Rochester as a premier global destination for health and wellness over the next 20 years. Three million people a year visit Rochester, primarily for Mayo Clinic. The goal of DMC is to double the number of visitors to 6 to 7 million. Downtown development has been a topic of conversation since the famous Chateau Theater opened its doors in 1927. DMC plans include additional downtown Mayo facilities, office space, biotech and pharmaceutical firms. Housing, restaurants, hotels, and retail establishments will be needed to accommodate visitors and the employees required to fill over 30,000 new jobs. DMC, according to plan, will have a positive affect not only Rochester, but also Olmsted County and the state of Minnesota. In addition to the $585 million in state money, Mayo Clinic, private investors and the City of Rochester will invest nearly $6 billion. With changes on its horizon, Rochester must continue fine-tuning its goals to meet the inevitable challenges ahead: aging and retiring Baby Boomers, diversity, affordable housing for students and job seekers, transportation, crime and population increases. If history is an indicator, Rochester’s growth will continue on a positive, upward trend.

OXBOW PARK, ZOLLMAN ZOO
Spend a day or night in the natural world - By Pat Garry If you love animals, have children, or just enjoy the great outdoors, then there’s really no excuse to not visit Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo. The zoo is anchored in the middle of the 600-acre park, and it showcases circa 40 different Minnesota-native species, including all animal classes: fish, reptiles, amphibians, birds and mammals.
Hiking, camping, picnics and a zoo Oxbow Park/Zollman Zoo is located on the south branch of the Zumbro River, three miles north of Byron. That creates a perfect landscape for viewing wildlife in the park at four picnic areas and along eight miles of hiking trails that wind through the woods and prairies.
about the natural world. “The park is fortunate to have the non-profit organization, Friends of Oxbow, to raise funds that allow the park and zoo to expand and enable us to build bigger, better zoo habitats,” said Clarissa Schrooten, naturalist.
The park also features a campground, a youth-group campground, and the Path of Imagination—a two-acre natural playscape. Park staff schedules weekend educational programs for the public to drop in and learn

Otters and Bears and Raptors, oh my!
At the popular otter exhibit, visitors can watch them slide down the waterfall in to the pool.
Of course, the animals are the main stars at the zoo. Home to more than 70 animal residents, the spacious complex has something for everyone to enjoy. The otter exhibit is a huge attraction. Observers watch in earnest to see the otters show off their graceful maneuvers as they swim in a close-up, viewable pool. Folks can watch the otters slide down the waterfall and into the pond just below. The large animals are also a big deal. “Everyone enjoys watching the black bear behave naturally, while she forages around her exhibit at feeding time, scouring the exhibit for hidden fruits and vegetables,” said Schrooten. The birds of prey exhibit offers eight species of raptors, all native to Minnesota, including the nation’s symbol—the bald eagle. The timber wolves steal the attention when they start howling, and the bison, deer and elk can also be viewed outside of regular zoo hours.
Plan a visit Oxbow Park and Zollman Zoo offer almost any outdoor enthusiast a chance to pursue his or her favorite activity: hiking, camping, fishing and picnics. One of the picnic areas also has playground equipment, and a ball field for public use. Oxbow campgrounds have campsites available, with running water, restrooms and showers. “It’s very exciting to see people of all ages who are anxious to learn, and it is reassuring to hear their comments on how all of us can improve our behaviors to protect our environment and its entire living species,” Schrooten said.
Bison, deer and elk can be viewed outside of regular zoo hours.
Come and be part of the nearly 50,000 visitors who visit the grounds annually. It’s your unique opportunity to pack a lunch, soak-up the sunrays, and talk to the animals, all in a beautiful, rural setting.

"Open-ended play" is the mantra at LARK Toys. Owned by Miranda and Scott Gray-Burlingame and Kathy and Ron Gray, this toy store was voted the best in Minnesota and one of the top 10 toy stores in the world. It offers toys that stimulate imaginations and leave room for kids to create from their minds and hearts. Those toys include wooden pull and push toys (made in the LARK workshop), basic wooden blocks, LEGOS, puppets, cooperative board games, and timeless jigsaw puzzles. Too, LARK features active toys such as kites, balls, Ninja lines, and unique reading selections in the large bookstore. Teens and adults can also enjoy the Curiosity Shoppe, filled with "grown-up" merchandise, including retro, enamel pop culture pins, phone accessories, greeting cards, three lines of clothing, artistic purses, weather vanes and more. The good folks at LARK make their own fudge in-house and boast an amazing antique toy museum. The solid wood hand-carved LARK Carousel is a work of art that people of all ages can view and ride, and the 18-hole mini golf course with waterfalls and a play-through cave is fun for all. The venue offers a cafe with snacks and sandwiches. "Our intention is to provide a welcoming place for people to relax, refresh, and play for a while," said Kathy Gray. We have so much fun sharing the joy of LARK with all of our customers from near and far."

Fold margins that are less than .1875 inches could result in copy that gets folded through due to minor variations in printing, trimming, and folding.
