THE WEDDING GUYS’ 2019 FASHION FORECAST By Matthew Trettel

THE WEDDING GUYS JUST RETURNED FROM NEW YORK AND Bridal Fashion Week! Wow—get ready, because there are going to be some gorgeous dresses rocking the wedding aisles in 2019. New York Bridal Fashion Week always excites us with its exhilarating energy, and we’re always reminded of how fast-paced things move in Manhattan. Now add to that 17 fashion shows, pretty much every hour on the hour, hitting traffic everywhere, then making time for dinner with our friends, including a delightful evening with Sylvia Weinstock. It was 20

truly a whirlwind, but we are back and ready to report on all the gorgeous trends we saw on the runway.

ECLECTIC DECADES OF DESIGN Every bride has her own style and vision for her wedding-day look, and saying “Yes to the dress,” is the end result. When it comes to your wedding gown today, there are more looks than ever to select from as designers push the boundaries and bring innovation to the bridal

runway. At this year’s Bridal Fashion Week, a spin on contemporary tradition was more than evident. The top trends are full of retro-revisited inspiration, and the fabric of choice, without a question, is lace. We are seeing very little satin, and some daring designers are using moiré. As pop culture is evolving out of the retro ’80s, bridal fashion is evolving as well into eclectic decades of design. The Fall/Winter 2019 collections at Bridal Fashion Week continue to embody many elements from past brides—such as Elizabeth Taylor, Grace Kelly, and Audrey Hepburn—creating a resurgence of classic silhouettes. The one big factor this year is, without a doubt, the “Meghan Markle effect.” From classic gowns with sleeves and romantic necklines to embellished cathedral veils and trains, bridal fashion has been impacted by the Duchess of Sussex. The year 2019 will usher in different necklines and sleeve styles such as cap, off-the-shoulder, bishop, bell, trumpet, and poet sleeves, and even detachable arm cuffs.

SOPHISTICATED SILHOUETTES We saw a wide variety of silhouettes this year, including pants and even leggings that continue to intrigue the daring bride. The traditional bride would be pleased to see the mermaid gowns with overskirts and classic ball gowns with flowing capes and long trains. There seems to be a clear cut when it comes to what’s in and what’s out for this coming season. In are the simple lines, sophisticated and reserved classic styles, with lace and embellished embroidery that includes multiple layers of fabric. Out are the see-through illusion gowns. From the bodice to the skirt, the ultra-sexy gown is a little too “out there” for most designers, who are embracing a more dignified sexy look this season. The fresh, open mind on bridal fashion will give you increased inspiration for your authentic wedding-day look. A popular silhouette over the years has been the A-line ball gown, a staple in the wedding gown industry. At one point, it seemed as if the more classic look yielded to fit-and-flare, with mermaid gowns becoming the newest craze. This season, we continue to see fuller A-line gowns in organza and tulle with multiple layers of glittery, embellished fabrics.

© Morilee

Designers have also reintroduced 3-D flower appliqués with embroidered lace and long, delicately detailed trains. Tasteful plunging necklines are more present, but with not quite as wide of an opening, and lower backs with delicate trim accents really speak to romance.

THIS SEASON’S STANDOUTS This coming season, we are going to see very long capes, from clean-line crepe-draped backs extending to a full train to some with multiple layers and embellishments in a more traditional style. We are delighted to see all the designers embrace their own styles and unique ideas for their designs. Color has also entered into the mix, including the usual nude color, but popping this year are black, moss green, and rose. The designers did not stop there, as beautiful silk fabrics were hand-painted and hand-beaded by artisans spending hours upon hours creating a masterpiece. We saw gowns with dramatic skirts that could be removed, revealing a short dress for the party following the ceremony. Adding a fun element to the bridal style, some dresses included feather-embellished hems that chime back to the 1960's Mondrian dress. We think this style is perfect for a courthouse or intimate garden wedding at home. Each season, there is always a standout fabric or embellishment the designers intentionally introduce, and this season it continues to be feathers. On some gowns, the feathers are so delicate they create an effect that looks as if the bride’s movements are effortless or in slow motion. Many designers are introducing a more creative and edgy look into their collection. There are two standouts in this category, whichever way you want to look at it. In order to see it, you will need to go under the gown, because the gown actually looks like an undergarment of crinoline. For that edgy bride who dares to be different, this can add a bold, modern twist to even the most classic ball gown silhouettes. From classic to coloring way outside of the lines, there is something for every bride this season. After taking in 17 fashion shows in two-and-a-half days, running from one show to another, we can tell the Fall/Winter 2019 season is going to be a phenomenal one. CELEBRATIONS

BEYOND THE WEDDING PARTY By Anastasia Penchi

THE WEDDING IS ALWAYS THE MOST IMPORTANT EVENT, BUT couples today also organize other parties for visiting family and friends. These can include welcome parties, morning-after brunches, or just about anything else. Plan for elegance or laughter, depending on the needs of your group.

PUT IT TOGETHER Kirsten Fischer Carman, owner of Fab Event Design of Rochester, says couples first should consider the experience they are trying to share when planning a party. Do they want something laid back or formal? Do they want guests to interact through activities or mingle over cocktails? “Choosing a location—after deciding that—makes it easy to focus on the fun details of how to share the weekend with your guests,” she says. Accessibility is also important, she adds, as getting around town is easy for some but more complicated for others. Venues with parking or group transportation can make it easier. “We love creating a total experience for clients and their guests,” she says. “We take the stress out … by selecting venues, décor, and a dream team of vendors that best suits our clients’ styles and budgets so that they can be hosts and truly enjoy such an exciting time in their lives.”

which put people together to solve riddles and puzzles before time is up, can help foster camaraderie. “Most relationships are built on experiences,” says Nathan Schroeder, owner of the Escape Challenge in Rochester. “With a wedding, the bride and groom want everyone to feel like one big happy family.” Room themes are always changing. Some may encourage you to finish a doctor’s research and save lives; others ask you to stop a bomb from exploding. And if your group is too big for one room, use two rooms and see which group escapes faster. “It’s an experience they can relive through the entire week,” Schroeder says.

IT’S WINE TIME

A relaxing way for visitors to unwind between wedding-related commitments involves a visit to a winery like Salem Glen Winery in southwest Rochester. This family-owned winery specializes in small batches of wines made from hardy grapes that survive Minnesota winters. Owner Dustin Ebert says that sitting in the sunshine drinking Prairie Star (a white wine with peach and apricot flavors) and nibbling on a cheese plate is especially cathartic for wedding attendants who have time to fill between their many scheduled events. Picturesque views of the rolling hills of this former dairy farm in the Zumbro River Valley add NEED AN ESCAPE? Another option involves giving the gift of a shared experience so the to the sophisticated atmosphere. “Wineries are great for that,” Ebert says. TWM wedding isn’t the only thing your group has in common. Escape rooms, 40

THERE IS SOMETHING MAGICAL ABOUT AN OUTDOOR wedding: the anticipation of a cool breeze and warm sunshine, golden backdrops of autumn foliage, or the homey comfort of your own backyard adorned with your favorite wildflowers. Therefore, to prepare an outdoor wedding that inspires imagination and romance, consider the following when planning your big day.

“All our tents have removable sidewalls available and can withstand 70 mph winds,” she says.

EMBRACE NATURE Though simply being outside offers enormous aesthetic opportunity, there are many ways you can impart your individual taste when incorporating a tent. The use of dramatic lighting, attractive wood floors, and eye-catching décor—such as inviting lounge furniture and colorful floral arrangements—give you the flexibility to create a venue that perfectly reflects your personal style. “And not only do you have options to choose your location—like a family farm, estate, or state park—tented weddings allow for draping or chandeliers,” says Bochenek. “Anything is possible.” TWM

It is the mission of professionals, whether at an established venue or on location, to attend to the special requests of the couple and put them—and their guests—at ease. “We can do it all,” says Shereé Bochenek of Après Event Décor & Tent Rental. From tent delivery and installation to setting elegant tables with linen, glassware, and china, professionals have the experience to handle the expected—and the unexpected—that come with setting up out-of-doors. “Often couples like to find volunteers UNFORGETTABLE VOWS to fold napkins or put on the chair covers,” says Bochenek. “But when it Weddings are a shared celebration with those who love you and supcomes to providing string lights, décor, or even heat or air conditioning, port your decision to marry, but your vows should express your intimate we have what you need.” love for each other. To create memorable vows, wedding officiant Konnie Bicknese suggests the following: DEALING WITH MOTHER NATURE • Ask yourself pertinent questions regarding the uniqueness of your relationship, such as “What qualities do I most admire about my partner?” Though chances are slim that you’ll get soaked on your wedding day, Mother Nature can still be fickle. EVER AFTER

LOVE THAT LASTS A LIFETIME By Jess Witkins | Cheeky Monkey Studio

THE HAPPIEST MARRIED COUPLES ARE THE ONES WHO SHOW a true sense of respect for each other. They are interested and curious about each other’s thoughts. They cherish one another. As important as your wedding day seems, the real work of a happy marriage comes afterward, ensuring both people feel loved, respected, and valued.

KNOW YOURSELF “If people work on their own leadership or their own betterment, there is a residual,” says Dr. Tom Nebel, a senior consultant with GiANT Worldwide, a leadership and team-building organization. “We talk about circles of influence. We influence ourselves, then our families, then our teams, then our communities. When you’re starting out, you have to get the first circle right.”

BUILD HEALTHY RELATIONSHIPS Sheila Daley, a licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist with Transitions Therapy, is seeing more couples come in proactively before marriage. “I think younger couples tend to have more expectations,” she says. “Over time, we’ve developed this idea that our partner needs to be our best friend, be our lover, and have things in common with us. There’s a lot of expectation we develop in this one person. It’s important for all couples to have a good circle of friends and extended family to meet their needs and not expect everything from each other. Also, know when those expectations seem unreasonable or too much.”

IS IT SOLVABLE? When it comes to problems, “I always tell the couple, ‘You’re both right,’” says Daley. “According to relationship guru John Gottman, everyone has their own subjective reality. If it becomes about ‘I’m right/ You’re wrong,’ try to join each other where you can, or agree to disagree. So many arguments are about trying to convince your partner that you’re right and they should see it your way.” She adds that some of the problems couples try to fix perhaps have no solution. “Only about one-third of things couples fight about are solvable. That’s how you end up in circular arguments. When you’re in an argument, recognize if it is solvable or not. Maybe you’re both right and don’t have to convince the other person.” “In a team construct,” adds Nebel, “the more common language, the better. Use words that mean the same thing to the same people. With common language, you can negotiate things a lot better. Communicate better. If you can do that in your marriage, you’re way ahead of the game.” TWM

TOP TIPS FOR MARITAL BLISS • • • • •

Prioritize couple time. Express interest and appreciation in one another. Cherish each other. Have each other’s back. Count on one another. Speak in the same language. We tend to want to show we care in our own style, but it’s important to know what your partner’s style is and accommodate that. • Remember, you’re both right. It’s not you versus your partner. It’s the two of you versus the problem. T H E W E D D I N G M AG A Z I N E 2 0 1 9 43

WEDDING TRENDS FOR 2019 By Heidi Griminger Blanke | Cheeky Monkey Studio

YOU’VE SET THE DATE AND PERHAPS RESERVED THE VENUE. SETTING Now it’s time to fill your Pinterest board with the latest wedding trends. Your venue may also determine the level of formality. At the Mayowood Stone Barn, for example, an outdoor venue invites a more casual atmosphere. Guests may be handed water bottles as they are seated. A RETURN TO FORMAL Gone are the do-it-yourself table decorations, wildflower arrange- However, even a backyard or barn can offer a more formal ambience. McDonald says that weddings, for the most part, are growing in size, ments, and informal décor of several years ago. While your wedding can and bookings can occur up to three years out. “On the flip side,” she says, still have an easygoing vibe, you can take it to the next level by imbuing “I’ve never had so many short-term weddings, two to six months out.” it with a dab of sophistication. Sit-down dinners are the way to go at Mayowood Stone Barn, says the Mayowood Stone Barn. Navy for men’s suits and rose for dresses are popular colors, with nonidentical dresses becoming the standard. either buffet or a plated dinner, so go with what works best for your reception. (Family style has lost its popularity.) Assigned seating, says McDonald, predominates.

FLORAL Walker is seeing loads of flowers, including floral chandeliers, a fast-growing design element. Greenery plays a leading role, along with candles of varying heights. Snyder has seen quite a change in flowers and floral arrangements. She notes tall and hanging arrangements are gaining in popularity. She seconds that greenery, particularly that evoking forest tones, is strong. Flowers themselves complement with deep tones. Be sure to keep your greenery front and center. If you want to go all out, try incorporating a hedge into your decorations. Most wedding planners can assist you with statement greenery.

IT’S UP TO YOU Your wedding celebrates your relationship, so make choices that are meaningful to the two of you, whether in terms of décor, food, or style. It's all about your commitment to each other, rather than being a purely social occasion. While following trends may make it easier to plan your wedding, as trendy items tend to be more available, there’s no right or wrong way to style your wedding. Feel free to incorporate trendy bits and pieces, or, if you adore a certain trend, embrace it all the way. From spotless white linens to doughnuts at midnight, 2019 offers countless new ways to make your day special. TWM

REAL WEDDING

Bryan & Talyr Kotschevar OCTOBER 14, 2017

What was the inspiration for the look and feel of your wedding?

Would you change anything if you could do it over again?

Rustic, vintage, romantic.

Absolutely not; our day was perfect. We couldn’t have imagined anything different.

What was your color palette? Navy, white, gold.

What was the significance of your wedding location and date? October is our favorite time of year, and we fell in love with Coop’s Barn, which was so close to home.

What advice do you have for other couples planning their weddings? While planning with your fiancé and loved ones, do not stress about little things. Enjoy this time that you get; the day will come faster than you can imagine, and you won’t even think about the small things you thought were so important. TWM

What was your favorite moment in your ceremony and reception? At the ceremony, it was looking out and seeing all of our loved ones surrounding us during the best moments of our lives. At the reception, it was watching our niece and nephews laugh and dance the entire night as we all celebrated.
