Reinventing the Harvest Festival WHAT’S NEW?
BY RILEY KELLEY DAILY NEWS CORRESPONDENT
The city of Scottville is gearing up for what may be the biggest and best Harvest Festival yet. This year’s festival may be different from those of previous years, but city officials want the community to know that the festival is alive and well, with a host of new events and attractions for everyone in the family. “One big change that people are obviously going to notice is that we do not have the traditional carnival,” City Manager Amy Williams said. When news hit that the carnival would be coming to this year’s Harvest Festival, the Downtown Development Authority assumed responsibility for planning and coordinating activities. “The carnival chose not to come, so the DDA jumped in,” said Sally Cole, who serves on both the DDA and the Scottville City Commission. “We’re building this Harvest Festival, breathing new life into it,” she said. “We’re blazing this new trail.” According to Cole, a great deal of thought and consideration went into this year’s schedule. “What we were trying to do as a DDA was make sure that these events correlated with each other, that when there was something go-

CHILDREN’S CARNIVAL Clark’s Attractions from Ionia is bringing its smaller-scale carnival for children this year. The company has been serving festivals in small towns all over the state of Michigan all summer long. Rides are geared toward younger children.
FAMILY TENT
‘There is literally something for everyone... The schedule is just jam packed.’ Amy Williams ing on in the family tent there was also something happening in the entertainment tent,” she said. “Something for every age group.” Amy Williams said one of the main goals was to create a fun and pleasant atmosphere for as many people as possible. “We’ve tried to make it more family friendly,” she said. “There will be a family tent, Sandcastles Children’s Museum will be there.” That’s not to say the 2016 Harvest Festival is only for kids. Williams
said there will also be a number of activities for older children to enjoy. “We’re really trying to reach out to a wide variety of ages,” she said. “We have a scavenger hunt for kids 12 and older on Friday afternoon, there’s a disc golf tournament, there’s just so much going on.” Williams said the city made an effort to include as many free and low cost events as possible, in order to make the festival accessible and fun for everyone in the community.
Returning favorites include the Running of the Clowns, the Ox Roast, the Scottville Gathering, and, of course, Harvest Festival Grand Parade, where Ms. Wheelchair Michigan Jamie Spore will act as grand marshal. “There is literally something for everyone,” Williams said. “The schedule is just jam packed.”
The Family Tent in the Smith & Eddy parking lot is home to Saturday’s The Gathering (a local merchandise and food vendor show). Throughout the festival, various activities have also been scheduled in the tent, including family activities on Thursday evening and the Custer Bootscooters, also on Thursday. Friday the Family Tent will host Sandcastles Children’s Museum from noon to 4 p.m., as well as a scavenger hunt. Friday night in the Family Tent there will be a Barn Dance with Marek’s Music Makers. Saturday after The Gathering, the tent opens up to more family activities from 6 to 9 p.m.
along with a car available to hit with a sledge hammer. Both events are sponsored by TNT Enterprize.
COW PLOP
Mason County Family Events is hosting a fundraiser in Adam Rader’s name on South Main Street Saturday after the parade. The cow plop is just as it sounds, people bid on a numbered square and if the cow “plops” in that square the winner receives a prize and the remainder of the money is donated in Adam’s name to a music program at the children’s hospital in Grand Rapids. Adam died of Ewing’s Sarcoma on Labor Day weekend, 2013. He was 18 years old.

Scottville Gathering brings personal touch BY RILEY KELLEY DAILY NEWS CORRESPONDENT
The Scottville Harvest Festival will offer artisans and hand-crafters an opportunity to show and sell their wares at the Scottville Gathering, an annual multi-vendor craft event that will be held under the family tent in the parking lot of Smith & Eddy Insurance on Sept. 17. The event is being coordinated by Sally Cole of Cole’s Antiques Villa, under the direction of Scottville’s Downtown Development Authority, and will focus on special, unique wares with a personal touch. “We’re really trying to focus it on local product, handmade, homemade, repurposed, not reselling or flea market stuff,” City Manager Amy Williams said. “The idea is to make it very diverse and to broaden the mindset for what an event like this can entail,” said Sally Cole, who also serves on the DDA. “Everything that’s coming will be personally made, personally created, whether it be a book, a painting, or like the baked goods we had last year.” “The idea came because we wanted to feature artisan home-crafted things in the fall,” Cole said. “It’s a time of gathering, and we just felt that would be a meaningful name for the event, so that’s how we arrived at it.” Crafters and vendors from near and far are invited to participate in the Scottville Gathering, where hand-crafted, home made and repurposed items of all shapes and sizes will be sold and displayed. “We are looking for variety,” Cole said. “There could be artifacts, there could be pottery...

We will most likely have jewelry, but all of the things coming will be personally crafted.” The Scottville Gathering also emphasizes finding new uses for old and vintage items. “There’s a very big interest in repurposing these days, and we like that because it keeps things out of the landfill,” Cole said. The Gathering will feature a
special guest appearance from author Ingar Ruddem, a children’s author from Muskegon, whose children’s fantasy novel “Traveling Circus” tells the story of a boy from Whitehall
is an original artistic creation with a local origin. “If a writer writes a book, they have crafted it,” Cole said. Ruddem will sign books and read excerpts from “Traveling Circus.” The Scottville Gathering will be held under the 30 by 90 foot family tent from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 17. There is room for 12 vendor booths under the tent, and Cole says there will be room for more outside. “We are pleased that vendors are signing up for this event, and there is room for more,” Cole said. The deadline for application is currently set for Monday, Sept. 12. Applications can be found at the Scottville Gathering Facebook page. “We’re looking forward to it, it’s going to be a great time, and there’s going to be lots of good stuff to buy,” Cole said. Jamie Spore, Grand Marshal
City of Scottville to honor Ms. Wheelchair Michigan at grand parade BY RILEY KELLEY DAILY NEWS CORRESPONDENT
Ms. Wheelchair Michigan herself, Jamie Spore, has been selected by the city of Scottville Harvest Festival committee to be the Grand Marshal for this year’s festivities. Spore will be recognized during the Grand Parade. “I’m really excited,” Jamie said. “Honestly, I think it’s going to be a very busy weekend but it’s going to be a lot of fun.” Jamie is a graduate of Mason County Central High School, and while

something like the Gravatron or Tilt-a-Whirl as their favorite part of the annual festival, it was always about community and family for Jamie. “As a little kid, obviously I loved the carnival rides and the car-
nival food, but I really enjoy just being around people,” Jamie said. “Honestly, I think that my favorite part is just the fact that it brings so many people together. People come from all over the state and all

Honoring Ms. Wheelchair Michigan over the country for the Harvest Festival, and for me it’s the opportunity to see so many people that you see maybe only once or twice a year. It’s just a great time to get back together.” This year, Jamie is looking forward to being joined in the parade by her two young nieces Sophia and Kara. “I will be on a float — the Ms. Wheelchair Michigan organization has a float that I can use for parades — and my nieces will be carrying a banner for me,” she said. Jamie plans to spend as much time as possible at the festival. She will pass out trophies at the car show, attend the coronation of the queens, and more. “I’m very honored and very blessed to be grand marshal,” Jamie said. “It’s very exciting I think it’ll be great.” According to City Manager Amy Williams, Scottville is equally thrilled to have Jamie involved in this year’s festival. “I was very excited to
