Rotary Park in Ludington will be the place for a tradition in the making — a tribute to craft beer, cider and mead connoisseurs at the fourth annual Brrrrewfest from 1 to 6 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 27. Music by Rusty Horse, with Mike Lenich as opening act, will add a festive flavor to the event. Proceeds will, as in the past, support the Friends of the Ludington State Park, which helps fund programming at the park and is raising money for a new accessible playground. The newest local craft brewer, Ludington Bay Brewing Co., is among the 27 participating craft brewers/specialties. Jamie Adam, Ludington Bay sales and marketing manager, said she is pleased with the opportunity to be a part of the fun and excitement Brrrrewfest offers to sufferers of winter’s cabin fever. “We hope we can reach out to those who haven’t made it down James Street to check us out yet,” she said. “We have 25 of our own Ludington Bay beers on tap at the brew pub, but can only show off five at the festival.” The five are D’Booty (a barrel-aged rum stout), Peach Berliner, Big Swell Imperial IPA, Fireside Stout, and First Curve IPA. Adam is enjoying her new position at Ludington Bay after 22 years as the concessions food and beverage director for Palace Sports and Entertainment, overseeing the food and beverage operation for the Palace of Auburn Hills, DTE Energy Music Theater, Meadowbrook Music Theater and Freedom Hill Amphitheater. “I was ready to slow down and work for someone who was energetic, respectful, community-oriented, generous, sincere, honest and unpretentious,” said
Adam, referring to her boss, the owner Ted Gedra. “I also get to drink great beer every day and live in Ludington,” she added. Gedra decided to build a craft brewery in Ludington after a career in an unrelated industry but one that allowed him the opportunity to try new things. “He retired a few years ago from Wolverine,” she said. “In all of his travels, he has tasted beer all over the world. He said, ‘Ludington Bay Brewing Co. was born out of love for Michigan and one man’s desire to share great beer with the people around him.’”
Adam said Ludington Bay is hitting the market at a good time. “About a year or so ago, the trend in the craft brew business was to make as wild of a beer as you could,” he said. “Brewers were adding crazy ingredients into their beers … cookies, peanut butter and jelly, candy bars, etc. Now, we see the trend going back to the basics. Trueto-style Brown, Pale Ales, IPAs and that is what you will find when you come in — a carefully crafted beer on the shores of Lake Michigan.” Since its opening, Ludington Bay has experienced a great year, and the employees enjoy working with the other local breweries in the area. “We have wonderful relationships with our fellow brewers in the area,” Adam said. “We have collaborated with Starving Artist on several different brews at both Ludington Bay and Starving Artists breweries.” Tickets for Brrrewfest, with its 27 craft beer and specialty beverage options, are $25 and available at PureLudington.com/beer for $25 until Thursday, Jan. 25.
