MCC in search of offensive line By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer SCOTTVILLE — For the second year in a row, veteran coach Scott Briggs and his Mason County Central football Spartans will start the season with just 20 players. One thing that Central will feature this season is a stronger than usual athleticism that will bolster its skill positions on offense and make its defense stronger. Right now, however, Briggs is most concerned with rebuilding his offensive line which took a

hit from graduation and from some seniors who did not come out this fall. “How quickly the offensive line can come together will be a big key for us,” said Briggs, who enters his 17th season as the top Spartan. “We will not be able to accomplish anything on offense if we can’t take care of business up front. From tackle to tackle, we have just one player who has varsity experience.” Last season, the Spartans posted a 3-6 record and graduated linemen Doug Wyman, Jacob Graczyk and

Tristan Gerbers with Wyman now playing for Hillsdale College. Also gone via graduation are running backs Josh Ritzema, Murphy O’Brien and Brad Renwick. Despite losing those three running backs, Central should be in good shape at the skill positions. “The skill positions will be a strength for us,” noted Briggs. “But we do have some newcomers to football who will have to grow in the game,” At quarterback, junior Spencer Knizacky, 5-foot-10, 165 pounds, returns for his

second season as the starter. “Spencer is a very efficient quarterback,” said his coach. At running back, senior Caleb Wood, 5-foot-8, 140; junior Blake Bladzik, 6-foot2, 185; sophomore Ryan Mount, 6-foot-3 170; sophomore Cody Soberalski, 6-foot-0, 175; and junior Eric Quick, 5-foot-8, 165, should handle the ball-toting duties well. Bladzik should also be a leader on defense from his linebacker position. At wide receiver and tight end, the Spartans had a bevy of good targets. Tight

end will be covered by senior Sean Wells, 6-foot2, 190; and senior Nate Strejcek, 6-foot-4, 190. At wide receiver, there will be three new athletic seniors, 6-foot-2, 170-pound Coltyn Tyndall; 6-foot-1, 175-pound Drew Griffis, and 6-foot-1, 175-pound Sheldon Carey. “We would definitely like to throw the ball more this season,” noted Briggs. “But we have to be able to protect the quarterback.” On the offensive line, only juniors Chance Illes, 6-foot1, 180, and Austin McDou-

gall, 6-foot-1, 185, have secured starting spots. The other spots will be filled from a group that includes sophomore Cesareo Puente, 5-foot-11, 280; sophomore Dakota Kutchinski, 5-foot-11, 250; sophomore Evan Robison, 5-foot-11, 170; sophomore Cody Frey; 5-foot-10, 175 and senior Jon Wittlieff, 5-foot-11, 175. “It will all come down to our offensive line,” reiterated coach Briggs. Girls have few numbers Benham’s turn to lead boys By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer SCOTTVILLE — Mason County Central girls cross country team coach Ed Sanders will encounter something unusual this season… a small turnout. “We have eight girls. That is the smallest team I’ve had in my 15 years coaching here,” said Sanders. “I like to think of us as being small, but mighty.” Although there are no seniors on the roster, Sanders does have a trio of veteran

juniors and a pair of promising underclassmen to build this team around. Last season, the Central gals finished second in the West Michigan Conference. But the Spartans have lost four girls to graduation. One of their top runners, Lindsay Larsen is now running for Siena Heights College. Pacing the Spartans on the running paths this fall should be juniors Leta Larsen, Jordyn Sanders and Chloe Kimes. “They are a nice 1-2-3 punch for us,” said Sanders.

“They have been putting in the miles this summer.” Help is also expected from sophomore newcomer Penny Petersen and freshman Olivia Kimes. “Penny could surprise this year,” noted Sanders. “And Olivia is an athletic girl.” Two other returnees are junior Nicole Johnson, Savannah Keefer and Tirzah Wood. By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer SCOTTVILLE — For the past 14 years, Mason County Central boys cross country coach Ed Sanders has built a strong program with the help of some outstanding runners. Last season, the Spartans finished second in the West Michigan Conference, second at the division-three region and tenth at the state meet. The Spartans’ Chase Barnett, then a senior, came

in second as an individual at the state meet and thensophomore Zac Benham finished third. The Chase Barnett-led era is now over as Barnett is off running for the University of Michigan. But that would seem to open the way for the Zac Benham-led era to take full bloom. “Zac has been running all summer. He is bigger and stronger,” said Sanders. “I feel he is even more driven to win this season. The runner that beat him and Chase at the state meet was a junior

last year, so he will be back.” Besides losing Barnett, Central also lost another strong runner, Austin Persoon to the graduation and he’s running at Muskegon Community College. The Spartans received another blow when this year’s anticipated No. 2 runner, senior Drew Griffis, opted to play football. “That was a big loss for us,” said Sanders. “We now have lost three of our top five runners from last season.” see boys, page 5

On the 11-man team this fall, the Spartans will look for junior Mitch Lange, junior Nolan Asiala and sophomore Jacob Shoop to make significant contributions. “These guys see how hard Zac works,” noted Sanders. “And they are working to make this team stronger.” Others that could lend a hand include senior Noah Genson, junior Cody Cooper and junior Logan Merrick. “We have talked as a team and we know we can not worry about who is not here,” said Sanders. “We have to get ourselves ready to run our best.” The 2014 Mason County Central boys cross country roster.

Juniors: Nicole Johnson, Savannah Keefer, Chloe Kimes, Leta Larsen, Jordyn Sanders, Tirzah Wood. Sophomore: Penny Petersen. Freshman: Olivia Kimes. In the conference, Sanders sees Hart as having the best chance to win the league title with Whitehall also being in the running. “If we can find a strong number-five runner, we could be near the top, too,” said Sanders. “Our state regional will be tough,” added Sanders. “We have Hart, Manistee and Benzie Central running in our region.”

Seniors: Noah Genson, Jared Knizacky. Juniors: Nolan Asiala, Zac Benham, Cody Cooper, Mitch Lange, Logan Merrick. Sophomores: Evan Boes, Jacob Shoop. Freshmen: Kaden Holmstead, Seth Wood. Sanders sees Whitehall as the team to beat once again. “Maybe North Muskegon or us can work our way up near the top also,” added Sanders.

Young Spartans have little experience By ed papes Daily News Sports Writer SCOTTVILLE — As the Mason County Central volleyball team looks to fight its way back to the .500 mark this season, it has two obsta-

cles to overcome. For starters, the Spartans will field a young team. Secondly, it will be a team that has, as coach Mary Scheffler says, “no super-tall girls.” “We will definitely be young this season,” noted Scheffler,

who begins her fourth season as the Spartans head coach. “We have just five returning players. Two of those are seniors and three are juniors. Many of our girls lack experience, but they want to be good and are working hard.”

Last season, Central posted a 14-28-9 record and have lost all-West Michigan Conference player Madison Geers to graduation. “She will be tough to replace,” said Scheffler. Also gone via graduation

are solid players Ashley Pyke and Abby Mavis. Leading the Spartans this fall should be 5-foot-5, senior setter Abbie Berringer, an allconference honorable mention, along with junior outside hitters Kylie Mount, 5-foot-9

and Dria Striker, 5-foot-9. Other help should come from 5-foot-7, junior setter Rylee Tyndall and 5-foot-4, senior backline player Sarah Winey. see volleyball, page 9

Central going through rebuilding By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer SCOTTVILLE — After losing six starters including their top scorer from last year’s 9-10 team, Mason County Central boys soccer coach Scott Scheffler and his team will be faced with a rebuilding season this fall. That situation has Scheffler emphasizing one overriding message to his troops. “The biggest thing I am looking for is a solid effort

from every player each and every game,” said Scheffler. “The win-loss record will be secondary to giving our best effort.” “I know we will be able to put 10 solid players on the field,” added Scheffler. “But we will not have the depth we’ve had in the past.” Lost to graduation are Baily Merrick, an all-conference selection, along with starters Anders Asiala, Brian Erndteman, Brayden Ahlfeld and Alex VanNoller.

Expected to pace the Spartans on the pitch this fall are seniors John Trivisonno, a midfielder; Austin Krusinski, a forward; and Jordan Steiger, a mid-defender, along with junior goalkeeper Boone Alway. Trivisonno and Krusinski should be Central’s top scoring options. Alway, meanwhile, is in his third season as the Spartans’ starting goalie. The Spartans also have lost senior defender Coltyn Tyndall, who opted to play

football this fall. “Losing Coltyn leaves a big hole to fill in our defense,” noted Scheffler. Central now is hoping to get help from senior newcomers Tyler Cook and Johnny Shafer on defense. Junior midfielder-backup goalkeeper Trevor Carrier, should also help out. “Our sophomore class is our biggest group and we will rely on them again this year,” added Scheffler. “They were thrown into the action

a lot last season.” The sophomores playing the most important roles will be defenders Tyler Marek and Connor Willick along with forward Cody Newman. “Hopefully, we will be able to use Tyler and Connor on offense some also,” said the Spartans coach. “They have offensive skills.” “Our first four games this fall, Whitehall, Montague, Traverse Christian and Hart, will be tough,” noted Schef-

fler. “After that, we should get better with experience.” The Spartans have a team of 19 players. Hart boys soccer

Barrera takes over Pirates soccer By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer HART — The successful Hart Pirates boys soccer program will have a new coach this fall. Wilmer Barrera, a native of Honduras and a former professional player will take over for Frank Zarate, who spent three season leading the Pirates. “I am happy to have such good kids to work with,” said Barrera, who last coached at Overland High School in Aurora, Colo. “And I am very happy with the number of players that have turned out.” The Pirates have 30 boys out for soccer this fall. The varsity will have 16 players and the newly-formed junior varsity will have 14. The varsity roster will consist of three seniors, four juniors, five sophomores and four freshmen. Barrera inherits a squad that has lost five strong players to graduation. Those are Nick Rombach, goalkeeper Beto Moul, Boni Hernandez, Derrek Broaddus and Antonio Herrera. Leading the Pirates this season should be senior returnees Isiah Rodriguez, a forward, and Jacob Guevara, a defenseman as well as junior returnees Samuel Hernandez, a midfielder; Matt VanderWall, a defenseman; and Dylan VanderZwaag, another defenseman. Sophomore midfielder Faher Mendez and freshman goalkeeper Damian Gonza-

Pirates ready to climb WMC ladder By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer HART — After going 3-35-4 last season, thirdyear coach Chris Bosse and his Hart Pirates volleyball team have their sights set on moving up in the West Michigan Conference this fall. “I am excited about this team,” said Bosse. “I think a good goal for us this year

is to finish in the top four in the league.” From last year’s squad the Pirates have lost four players to graduation. Most notably, Hart has lost reserve Natalie Switaj. Bosse has seven returnees and a good number of them have good height. Spearheading the Pirates’ efforts on the court this season should be senior outside hitter Anna Hertzler, 5-foot-

9, who was an all-conference honorable mention last year; senior middle hitter Anna Drenth, 5-foot-9; and junior outside hitter Baylee Draper, 6-foot. Also returning are juniors Jessica Riggs, a 5-foot-4 setter; Haley Mast, a 5-foot-7 middle hitter; Isabel Vela, a 5-foot-4 defensive specialist, who is the front-runner to be the team libero; and Madison Hegedus, a 5-foot-

10 middle hitter. Newcomers to the varsity are junior outside hitter Haleigh Schaner, 5-foot-7 and the team’s strongest server; junior middle hitter Teri Carlson, 5-foot-7; and sophomore setter-outside hitter Aubrey Hertzler, 5-foot-8. “I really feel all 10 of our players will play on any given day,” said Bosse. “We will need them all to be

ready.” “I am still experimenting to find our top setters,” added the Hart coach. “The girls will have to be flexible this season and learn some different positions.” The 2014 Hart Pirates volleyball team roster. Seniors: Anna Drenth, Anna Hertzler. Juniors: Teri Carlson, Baylee Draper, Madison Hegedus,

Haley Mast, Jessica Riggs, Haleigh Schaner, Isabel Vela. Sophomore: Aubrey Hertzler. Assisting Bosse with the varsity once again will be Brett Beachum. Priscilla Snider will coach the junior varsity team. “Whitehall and then Montague, those should be the toughest teams in the league this year,” said Bosse.

Pirates show fire for football this fall By ED PAPES Daily News Sports Writer HART — The number of players out for football is a concern once again at Hart High School. But the desire of those athletes is not a problem. “We only have 16 players on the varsity,” said fifthyear head coach Steve Hlady. “But the greatest thing we have is the level of commitment to football that these

guys show.” Last season the Pirates, with 19 players on the roster, went 0-9. From that team, Hart has graduated six players. Those that will be missed most include running back Brandon Amstutz, quarterback Joe Fillips and two-way lineman Carl Morgan. This fall, the Pirates have 14 seniors, one junior and one sophomore on the team. “Yes, it is good that we have so many seniors. They are

more mature,” said Hlady. “However, five of those seniors are newcomers this season.” “Truthfully, we will rely a lot on our one junior and our one sophomore,” added Hlady. That one junior is Brett Bonstell, a 5-foot-10, 160-pound quarterback. And the one sophomore is Brady Tate, a 5-foot-8, 170-pound running back. “We will ask them to do a

lot,” said Hlady. Veteran seniors that will need to help out include tight end-linebacker Matt Wilson, 6-foot-2, 180; tight end-linebacker Freddy Oliveros, 5-foot-11, 185; and guard-linebacker Daniel Farias, 5-foot-8, 175. Other returning seniors are fullback Ty Davis, tackle Jaxon Riley, center Ruben Jaramillo, halfback Norberto Ramirez, tackle Scott Pankow and guard Nick Curtis.

“We will look to be more diversified on offense this year,” said Hlady. “We will have some new formations and some new wrinkles.” The 2014 Hart Pirates football team roster: Seniors: Gilberto Colon, Nick Curtis, Ty Davis, Daniel Farias, Rusty Gleason, Travis Hall, Ruben Jaramillo, Aaron McGhan, Freddy Oliveros, Scott Pankow, Norberto Ramirez, Jaxon Riley, Jordan Self, Matt Wilson.

Junior: Brett Bonstell. Sophomore: Brady Tate. Assisting Hlady with the varsity again this season will be Brad Francis and Dan Pineda. The junior varsity, which currently has 18 players, will be led by head coach Pat Ferrer and assistant Mark Riley. Hlady tabs Ravenna and Muskegon Oakridge as the two teams with the best chance to win the league title.
