If we already collect trade waste from you and you’re thinking about segregating your waste further, we can carry out a waste audit and come up with the best solution for you.

To set up trade waste collections, here’s what you need to consider: Step 1 See what waste you have and how you can divide it up, for instance: food waste, glass, general or dry recyclables. Step 2 Choose your wheelie bin.

As a commercial business, you need to take responsibility for dealing with any waste you create. Your waste is your responsibility until a licensed waste carrier takes it away. With Shorts, you can be confident that your waste will be taken care of legally and environmentally. Shorts Group are members of : • ISO 9001, 18001 and 14001 accreditations • CHAS (The Contractors Health and Safety Assessment Scheme) • Safecontractor • Members of FTA (Freight Transport Association)

Step 3 Decide on the frequency of your collections and then we can agree a day for us to collect your waste.

One of the best things you can do for the environment is to recycle your waste.

Step 1 Decide how you want to divide up your waste To make best use of your waste, separate it into:

cardboard

food tins & drink cans

• Dry recyclables such as: paper, cardboard metal cans and plastics. We would provide you with a detailed list of what can and can’t go in your recyclables bin before we start collections.

mixed paper

mixed glass bottles & jars

By separating your recyclables and general waste, you’ll reduce your costs (due to landfill tax) and comply with legislation which reduces your business’s impact on the environment. • Glass such as: bottles and jars. • Food waste such as: fruit and vegetables. See pages 10 and 11 for more information. • General waste which is anything that can’t be recycled.

Step 3

Choose your containers

Our wheelie bins are: • Lightweight for easy manoeuvrability. • Easy to clean using the in-built drainage plug. • Clearly labelled to show what items can go in them. • Secured with brakes. • Provided with a key to lock containers for safety and security.

If you’re unsure what you need, we can carry out a waste audit for you which will help you understand what you need and what options you have. By doing this, we can help you control and potentially reduce your waste costs and convert your waste into energy and other environmental products as opposed to sending it all to landfill.

We can also supply internal recycling bins and promotional literature in order to assist you in maximising your recycling. If you don’t have the space or have access for a wheelie bin, we have a bag collection service available or we have skips available for large volumes of waste. We can offer 240L, 360L, 660L, 1100L containers.

240L - height: 106.5cm 360L - height: 109.5cm

660L - height: 128cm

1100L - height: 140cm

Where does your trade waste go? General waste General waste which cannot be recycled, with the exception of hazardous or contaminated waste is sent for reprocessing into ‘Refuse Derived Fuel’ (RDF) to be used by energy plants.

Dry recyclables

Dry recyclables are segregated at our fully licensed Recycling Centres in Ascot and Aldershot. General waste is reprocessed into Refuse Derived Fuel. We make it our ambition to prevent as much general waste going to landfill as possible.

Dry recyclables are handled at our recycling centre and sorted manually by our team of pickers. Some items are forwarded to third parties for recycling or further processing. Normally card and paper is turned into new paper. Plastics are melted and moulded into new products, such as bin liners and carrier bags, CD and DVD cases, and even garden furniture. Aluminium cans can end up as part of a car, aeroplane or bike!

We also collect other recyclable materials, such as green waste and building materials as part of our other recycling services. Green waste and rubble is processed by us and sold on as aggregates, compost and soil products.

Glass Glass is taken to our recycling centre and forwarded to third parties to be recycled into new glass, bottles and jars. Finely crushed glass is also used widely in the building industry for road surfaces and decorative finishes.

Food waste Food waste is taken to a local composting and anaerobic digestion plant. Here it will be processed and ultimately converted into renewable energy or made into a fertiliser. You can read more about our food waste recycling on page 10.

Why recycle your food waste?

This is fast becoming the ‘must do’ in the recycling world. In Scotland, food waste recycling is already statutory regulation and England is likely to follow suit. The UK produced a staggering 12 million tonnes of food waste a year. The majority of this ends up in landfill – and this comes at a massive cost! Land-filled food produces methane – a potent greenhouse gas that is 23 times more damaging to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide. For this reason, the government is annually increasing the landfill tax to encourage people to recycle food waste rather than sending it to landfill.

How it works Our food waste collections operate in the same way as any other of our trade waste service. Together, we choose your collection frequency and container size. You also have the option to use bin liners which help keep your bin clean. So, rather than filling up you general waste bin with food waste, you’ll be filling up another bin – just for food waste. This in turn reduces your general waste. So you may even save money on the frequency of your general waste collections!

What we do with your food waste The food we collect is taken directly to a local composting and anaerobic digestion plant. They turn food waste into a ‘digestate’ which is used to spread on farm land as a fertiliser or turned into electricity.

What food goes in your food waste bin? All food waste can go in the bin, including: • cooked and raw meat • fruit and vegetables, egg shells, rice, pasta & cereal • bread, cakes and pastries • tea bags and coffee grounds • leftover food • first stage packaging • dairy products The only items we ask you not to put in the bin are: plastic bags, glass and paper.
