Short+Sweet Sydney 2014

A NOTE FROM THE CREATIVE DIRECTOR OF SHORT+SWEET

It’s a great pleasure to welcome you to the 12th season of Short+Sweet Theatre in Sydney. The three month program features the enthusiastic participation of around 800 writers, directors and actors and is a testament to the deep pool of talent that Sydney has to offer. As always each season has its share of unique occurrences. For me 2013 will be particularly memorable because five plays from the brand new Regional NSW Short+Sweet program in Dubbo and Broken Hill have been included in the mix. Next year the program will be expanded to include other regional locations underpinned by an extensive workshop and mentoring program.

Additionally there are productions in the program that come from all around the nation and from as far away as Chennai. This Indian offering will throw up a unique and noteworthy challenge to local groups since it has already won Best Production in Short+Sweet Festivals in Chennai, Mumbai and Kuala Lumpur. From a behind the scenes perspective we’ve greatly benefitted over the last year from the guidance and support of Justin Macdonnell and Les Currie who have put into place structures and systems that will carry the organisation onto bigger and better things over the coming years. This is also the first year that a dedicated Producer has been included as part of the production team. Both Producer, Lisa Rathbone, and Festival Director, Pete Malicki, have worked tirelessly to put together the massive program. The results of their work, as is always the case with Short+Sweet, can be seen on the stage. I hope you enjoy the show. Mark Cleary Founder and Creative Director Short+Sweet

THE HISTORY OF SHORT+SWEET Short+Sweet began in 2002, at the old Newtown Theatre based out of St George’s Hall. We began with a festival of a few dozen plays. Nowadays, Short+Sweet takes place all around the world – Sydney, Victoria, Queensland, Regional NSW, New Zealand, India, Malaysia, the Philippines and Singapore. We have expanded into Dance, Cabaret, Song, Comedy and festivals for high school students called Fast+Fresh. We’ve produced around 2500 plays written by Australian and international playwrights, utilising the talents of around thousands of directors and actors. In fact, if you add up all the people who’ve been involved with Short+Sweet Sydney over the years, the number is now well over a whopping 10,000!

M MESSAGE FRO THE FESTIVAL DIRECTOR OF T SHORT+SWEE Welcome or welcome back to Short+Sweet Sydney 2014, the lucky thirteenth season of the world’s largest festival of 10 minute plays. It’s an honour and a privilege to back again as Festival Director for the third year running and I’m looking forward to putting together another season of great new work never before staged in Sydney. I’m passionate about this festival because it brings so many great artists together. Not only will we put on 160 great new plays never before seen in Sydney, but we’ll help generate many new friendships and professional relationships which will lead to all kinds of new work being put together. I’ve been delighted to see many shows by our 2012 and 2013 artists being performed around the country and even internationally. It’s a real buzz to see a show we produced last year hitting the stages in LA! This year’s programme has some real gems in it, with some of our best artists returning for more alongside talented newcomers. The long hours and hard work we put into this festival pays off the second the lights come up on stage and opening night of each performance week can’t come soon enough.

I want to thank a few people while I have the mic (so to speak). Our founder and Creative Director Mark Cleary, our tireless Producer Lisa Rathbone, the wonderful Artists’ Committee who pitch in so much to make the festival run smoothly, our senior crew Ben Brockman and Luke Middlebrook, our publicist Geoff Sirmai, the venue staff we work with and all of our hardworking interns and stage crew. But most of all, I want to thank the 750+ writers, directors and actors who are involved in this year’s festival. Without your talent, enthusiasm and hard work, there would be no Short+Sweet. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Here’s to a brilliant Short+Sweet 2014! Pete Malicki Festival Director Short+Sweet Sydney 2014

SHORT+SWEET DANCE

SHORT+SWEET CABARET TWO GLORIOUS WEEKS – 40+ INSPIRING 10-MINUTE PRODUCTIONS Short+Sweet Cabaret Sydney 2014 adds a sparkling jewel to the Short+Sweet crown. Short+Sweet Cabaret launches 40+ new works from Sydney’s hottest established and emerging cabaret talent. In an environment of collaboration it has been inspiring to be part of bringing the multitude of talent and enthusiasm together to create 3 very different programs across the two weeks. Merging theatre and music cabaret creates an atmosphere of exploration and high energy; politics, stories, characters, sex, songs, and silliness. Short+Sweet Cabaret 2014 is a forum where ideas are tested, risks are taken, where the performers and audience share and intimate experience of something new, and never seen before.

It has been an enormous pleasure to meet the range of artists who have generously offered to be part of this inaugural Cabaret Festival – in fact there is far more interest from performers than we had spaces available and this bodes well for the future of this festival. We have been brilliantly supported by an amazing creative team: Elizabeth Rogers, Tanya Gruber, Daryl Wallis. The only thing to expect is that each piece is ten minutes or shorter. Short+Sweet Cabaret Sydney 2014 explores the unexpected. Kate Gaul Festival Director Short+Sweet Cabaret Sydney 2014

Short+Sweet Dance Sydney is a platform for emerging and professional choreographers to develop and showcase their work in a supportive environment, where their only concern is their individual creative process. We’ve been very excited to bring Short+Sweet Dance back to Sydney, which has proven to be home to a large, diverse, talented and incredibly dedicated industry of artists. The huge response to the callout for works was overwhelming and it’s been such a pleasure to meet with and experience the works of so many artists; we’re sure you as the audience will feel the same. For this years festival we’ve introduced dance on film as well as a new Wildcard platform that supports young choreographers and the opportunity to further develop works through audience feedback on-site redevelopment.

The festival brings choreographers from a wide range of genres and experiences together to share and exchange ideas. Emerging choreographers have the opportunity to learn from industry professionals and acclaimed choreographers are reenergized by the raw passion of our next generation of movement makers. We’re very proud that Short+Sweet can be a festival that unites and celebrates every facet and sub-genre of dance and that it not only serves the professional development of the artists involved, but also provides an excellent showcase for Sydney audiences. Enjoy! Joshua Lowe, Adam Wheeler Festival Directors Short+Sweet Dance Sydney 2014

S PREVIOUS WINNER

James Hartley Short+Sweet Sydney Theatre Best Director 2013 I believe in Short+Sweet. I suppose you can’t get any more melodramatic than that. As if Short+Sweet was a kind of miracle or saviour. But it was, for me. And I don’t even mean winning Best Director. I mean going back to when I first joined, in 2006. I had recently returned to Sydney permanently from living in the Philippines for half of my life and I had no connections, no work history, no friends, nothing. I had no history of acting or writing or directing in the country. So no one took me seriously. But Short+Sweet gave me a chance. I did backstage for the 2006 festival and made friends and saw plays and got excited. And then when I wanted to act it let me do that. And then write. And direct. Without Short+Sweet I wouldn’t have the contacts I have today and without those connections I would definitely not be standing where I am

right now. I apologise that this has turned into a pithy love letter to Short+Sweet but I honestly owe this festival a great deal. Any chance I can, I try to encourage people who want to act or write or direct to try it out because they too may find what I found: a great chance to try or improve their artistic skills in a supportive environment, and great, passionate people.

Lucy Gransbury Best Actress I used to write and produce a lot of my own shows to small crowds that often consisted only of a couple of friends, my parents, and a lost drunk guy, so there were few moments in my life that had made me so giddily happy as being on stage at the 2013 Short+Sweet finals at the Seymour Centre, where I heard an audience of 500+ people laugh as I performed material I had written myself. I’m still recovering from that high.

Since winning the Best Actress prize in March, I have had a wonderfully busy year. I was contacted by a number of industry professionals after the festival, all of whom had seen my performance and wanted to discuss further opportunities for me or my script, which opened up great avenues and forged new professional relationships. Thanks to the audience I had been exposed to during the Short+Sweet season – by my calculation, over 1500 people – I was able to garner an audience for the one-hour, one-woman comedy show I wrote for the Sydney Fringe in September, Here Comes The Brides, an extension of the piece I performed at the S+S Festival. My Fringe show was a success, and I look forward to bringing more shows to Sydney in the near future (shameful promo... @LucyGransbury for all updates)! Above all, the best part of Short+Sweet (other than the fantastic prizes, do you like my new headshot?) was the friendships I made – it’s amazing how lasting friendships can be formed just by giggly whisperings exchanged backstage. And of course, the envelope from the finals that says ‘Best Actress.’ I still like to casually carry it around with me, facing out, as often as possible. Thanks Short+Sweet.

Mitch Fitzpatrick Best New Talent, Overall People’s Choice Winner Short+Sweet is a great creative outlet for aspiring writers, directors and actors. It gave me the opportunity to workshop and perform an idea that would have been harder to showcase without the festival’s help. With my best mate, Nathan O’Keefe, we created our own independent theatre company and wrote, directed and acted in our own short play, which might not have been possible if not for Short+Sweet providing us a stage and an audience. In total I performed 14 times, and though exhausting, it was a fun environment and a great way to meet out creative talents and practice my skills. Since Short+Sweet I have created an independent, online webs series titled, Who Killed Jessica Lane?, which has had multiple international film festival acceptances and won the Grand Prize at LA Web Fest which took me to the south of France on an all-expenses-paid trip to the Marseille Web Fest in October. Having the

courage and confidence to enter Short+Sweet, and the success of my play, The Coffee Table within the festival, it has helped me to further my original work in theatre and film. I am very thankful to Short+Sweet for its initiative in offering a home to stage short plays. I was very humbled to receive Best New Talent, as well as Overall People’s Choice Winner, in 2013. It was an amazing experience that I’ll never forget and wish all the best for this year’s finalists!

Tom Green Best Actor I was lucky enough to be plucked by the wonderfully talented actor and director, James Hartley, to portray the wily Mr Fox in Simon Godfrey’s The Fox and the Hunter and walk away with the “Best Actor” award. Credit is due to Godfrey’s dynamite script, and James’s directing perfectly complimented its wit, playfulness and absurdity. The whole process was an absolute joy. The anxious excitement in our seats awaiting the verdict after

each round, the precariousness of my tippy-toed, doglegged leaps and bounds being thrown around stage by my burly counterpart, and the incredible support and endearment from Pete Malicki and the Short+Sweet team, who exercised remarkable relentlessness in making the festival possible. Wonderfully, our fellow actors were not consumed with competition but rather bubbling with gratitude and glee, which forced all of us to revel in the down-time and recognize the incredible opportunity we had been delivered in Short+Sweet. After Short+Sweet concluded, the HSC hailstorm swept me up and somewhat stunted my stage addiction. Despite all that nonsense, friends of James Hartley roped me in to a couple of film projects including a web-series by Jeremy Brull and Paul Ayre dubbed The Justice Lease which features NIDA graduate Andrew Steel as Batman, ABC funny-man Dave Eastgate as Aquaman and myself as a boyish mystery sidekick. In my young and entirely ignorant opinion, Short+Sweet is exactly what the Australian theatre scene needs: community, variety, accessibility and, perhaps most importantly, brevity. I’m thoroughly glad it exists to wash off the dust of daily life and transport us to a blissful unreality through the snippets of stage-magic you are about to behold.
