ARRI V I N G S O M E WH E R E ,

N O T H ERE

Andrei is a 10 year-old boy and just a while ago he was living the cheerful life that every child deserves to live. With the occurrence of the economic crisis his father got fired and his mum moved to Italy to find a job. Over the months, the absence of his mother as well as his father’s alcohol abuse had become a tough burden to bear. The presence of his relatives and the strong affection to his motherland cannot fill the e m p t i n e s s inside him. After a long and painful lawsuit between his parents, Andrei finally catches up with his mother in Italy but what seems to be a happy ending is actually the beginning of a new life where everything looks different and where expectations turn into delusions. Andrei deeply misses his old habits and finds it difficult to integrate into the new society. This generates a strong discomfort

that g e t s e v e n w o r s e b e c a u s e o f t h e arduous relationship between the boy and his mother’s new partner. Andrei shuts himself out, avoids people and isolates himself into a mental and physical cage. He hardly ever leaves the flat that, although it does not feel like home, it is the only refuge he has. His body is in Italy but his spirit is still there in Romany, since Andrei has arrived somewhere but not here‌

LIFE SCIENCE

I am a Neuroscientist and an avid Fine Art Photographer. My scientific research focus on the study of the mechanisms underlying epilepsy and the development of innovative cure for this illness. In recent years I found myself directing vast attention to the “flesh arena”, highly inspired by my long lasting confrontation with the biological tissue for the study of Neuroscience. “Life Science” is an attempt to deal with the aesthetics of the scene, improvising various contexts, the tools and paraphernalia shown are not just the typical ones used in the clinical operating place. It takes a while for a young clinician or a researcher to accommodate the laboratory or hospital scenes to enable good performance. This is done by extensive training; some cannot adjust to the visuals. I feel, my photographic activity carries me to these regions too. My “Life Science” project is forcing the biological tissue into a relatively pleasant, sometimes artificial scenarios contemplating disquieting issues of materialism, erotica and mortality, corresponding with the complicated and intriguing category of “Animal Reminder” in the visual arts. Aging, wearing, erotica and lust are twirling mingled together here, as if our existence is eternal on this planet. My extended “Life Science” series negotiates also the immoral reasoning for various toning of human violence, the use of viciousness! My images move from the animate, lively flesh of lust to the inanimate, lifeless ones. We tend to describe violent humankind behavior as an animal like beastly revolting one, associated with animal violent behavior. But the animal world is dictated purely by survival rules due to inexorable, harsh selection process. No one will consider the employment of the essentials measures for the preservation of the species as cruel ones; this was previously emphasized by Charles Darwin and recent eminent scholars. I believe that in many aspects we are inferior to the animal world moral conduct, while evidently being superior in our intellectual competence.

- All animal specimens are derived from Natural History Facility. Final version will include a peer reviewed essay: The Brain and the Visual Arts: An emphasize on the “Animal Reminder” genre in the visual arts.

BIOGRAPHY I’m a 30 years old graphic designer based in Turin (north of Italy). I’ve always been keen on photography and even though I’m anything but a professional, I like to frame moments, people or things hidden to the most with my camera or mobile...it makes me feel good, and I love it. ..... I’ve shooted these pictures during an holiday through Portugal with some of my best friends...it’s been one of the best experience in my life and I’d like to dedicate this work to all the people we met along the way...Cristina from Lagos and her boyfriend, who gave us plenty of tips, the guys working in the hostels we stayed at in Lisbon and Porto...and all the people who contributed to make ourselves feel more then home during our trip. Obrigado!
