About
This piece is one of a series of paintings based on the theme of mortality. Over the last year, like many others, the experience of lockdown and a pandemic has enabled me to spend a lot of time contemplating not only my own mortality but also that of those around me. Although physically dark in tone, I feel there is much joy in the image, it is conceived as a celebration of human spirit. The seemingly simplicity of things underscoring the more complex and layered ideas of what it is to be alive. For me the circle motif creates a portal for the viewer directly into the painting, a device to move the eye over the surface. These paintings therefore become a simple support for meditation and reflection, an artifice serving to fix the viewers’ attention for a time. Kent United Kingdom
