The time has come for these boys to become men and these girls to become women; and that’s bad news for daddy… in the time that has elapsed since birth, your cute little diaper machine has become a big, messy, mammal that is known to the human race as a teenager. I think I speak for everyone standing behind me when I say this: during my time at CSS my mind and body have changed for better or for worse. Robert Rotzetter I’ve learned things that don’t make any sense at all; such as animal mating rituals, proofs, and the theory of relativity. Above all, the most important lesson I have learnt during my distinct career at CSS would be… when and how many times a week I have to shave. I’ve been informed several times by my girlfriend that I need to shave more often to avoid looking like a patchy Grizzly Adams. You know it’s funny; I hate shaving now but when I was little, like eight years old, I used to sit in the bathtub, put bubble bath on my face, and pretend to shave it off. Yeah, I even had like one of those fake plastic razors. I remember I was so fast I could go from being a hairy Santa Claus to a smooth Olympic diver like ‘snap’ that. Now it takes me 25 minutes and 29.5 seconds to shave my half stash, and when I’m done, I’m just covered in these tiny little cuts that I don’t notice — till halfway to school on the bus I look out the window and see my reflection. I look like one of those victims in a Freddy Kruegger movie. Yeah needless to say, I wish I was still shaving bubble bath off with that plastic razor. I was elected to do this speech over two months ago. I’ll never understand why out of all these intelligent people behind me, I was voted to represent our class. The reason I delivered this speech is, it is in my personality to make an attempt at humour. Knowing yourself is important, and thanks to CSS I have figured out who I am. Thanks to friends, staff, cousins, parents, brothers sisters, girlfriends, boyfriends, and peers. All these young men and women have discovered who they are; and ultimately lead them to the path that will direct their lives. And for that, on behalf of our graduating class, I thank you all. I hope those of us that now have to shave with real razors, will stay young at heart as they embark on their journey into the Great Abyss. Celebrate the good times.

Valedictorian Speech - Kyra McCallum
Well, here we are, at the end of high school, and the start of our graduation ceremonies. Although the way has been long and difficult, and this gymnasium is hot already, at the end we will find, as Robert Frost said:“The best way out is always through.”And so we begin: How do you wrap up the events of 12 years of education in a five minute speech? How could we ever thank everyone who has helped us get here, without leaving someone out? How do you give all the advice our classmates will need (and remember) in one night? We can’t, but we’ll try our hardest. Many of us have been together since kindergarten, experiencing the wonders of public education and journeying through bad grades, drama and lost loves as a group. We all come from different backgrounds, and this is probably the last time we will be able to look around us and see the whole graduating class united. Don’t get me wrong, we’re not here to make you cry, one thing we decided before writing this is that we wanted to make you laugh. So think about all the pointless fights you’ve had over these high-school years, about all the times you fell down in the hallway, remember those phases where you couldn’t safely walk around the halls unless your hand was on the waist of your pants, for fear of them being yanked down to your knees. There are too many memories to share here tonight, and some that our families really don’t want to hear. Long story shorter, we’re here, finally, only to leave again soon. Already some of us have moved on from Clearwater, experiencing“bigger and better things”, city lights, sleepless nights, and discovering the pains of having to pay our own bills. Some of us may even go on to see the world, so grads, when you’re out travelling around and meeting new people, keep in mind these words of Albus Dumbledore:“Differences of habit and language are nothing at all if our aims are identical and our hearts are open.” To our parents and caretakers and teachers alike, thank you. We know that we’ve been kind of hormonal these past few years, yet through it all you’ve fed us, clothed us, let us sleep in your house – although no doubt we got kicked out every now and then – and taught us almost all we’d need to know. You’ve seen us grow from toddlers to teens, and now we’re becoming so much more. The moment we’ve waited for is here: we’re finally stepping into adulthood and will soon be considered REAL PEOPLE. Soon we will feel comfortable calling our teachers by their first names; our parents can become more like friends rather than live-in enemies who“want to ruin our liiiiives.”And we use the“back in my day”line on those younger than us. So, to you who have had to deal with our daily tantrums, hear our curses, and even wipe our wittow bumbs, thank you, thank you, thank you. Oh, and yes, we are VERY proud of those grey hairs we gave you, you’re so welcome! Now, let us get to the advising section of this speech: Grads, in our infinite wisdom we tell you this: Apply for the good jobs first, in case you actually get them. Go ahead and have a little fun, the serious stuff will still be there in the morning, I promise. Be careful what you wish for, because you usually get the opposite. Mistakes aren’t ALWAYS bad, sometimes they’re even entertaining and teach you a“life lesson.” Shop thrift; it’s cheaper. In a difficult situation remember this“ideas are more powerful than guns”, so when you can, fight with your brain rather than your fists, and if Stalin is saying it, it must be true. Trust your instincts, and the advice you get from your elders, sometimes they’re actually right. And finally, the best thing we could tell you: always, always leave the remote where you can see it.
