In just a few years, the number of residents in the River District has grown from 200 to over 2,000. Recent projects from proven developers such as Ed

DANVILLE Danville is an attractive location for start-up businesses as well as established companies due to the City’s desire to stay ahead of the technology curve. Danville is the regional hub that connects many communities throughout Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina. This river city is a nature-lover’s dream. Danville’s Riverwalk Trail offers a wide variety of healthy, outdoor activities including peaceful walks along the river and mountain biking at Angler’s Ridge. These biking trails were named the best in Virginia and top 25 in the world. There are many other parks with amenities such as tennis courts and baseball fields located throughout the city. Danville has a “city” atmosphere with a comforting small-town
feel. Close relationships and a general caring for your neighbor’s well-being are just a few of the special traits Danville offers its residents. There is a “helping hand” philosophy that makes Danville a positive and

GRETNA Community spirit thrives throughout Gretna. Revitalization for a Greater Gretna, a group of visionaries, is helping to reboot Gretna without sacrificing any of its great history. Upon entering Gretna, you are welcomed by a sign that reads, “Gretna — A Railroad Village.” Rich in railroad history, Gretna was a link to the Lynchburg & Danville Railroad. In 1872, Jeremiah Talboot deeded a right-of-way to the Railroad, knowing the prosperity that would come to the Town via the railroad. Many trains passed through Gretna, which was then called Elba, including the Old 97, immortalized in the wreck of 1903. Gretna embraces the roots upon which the town was founded while strengthening the community with goals of moving forward in the future. The Town’s slogan, “Ain’t no big thing, but it’s growing” HY

SPOTLIGHT Interview by Corey Williams
Meet Jameel and Shay, an incredible power couple who center their life around creativity, positivity, and most importantly each other. Jameel is a photographer, a videographer, a content creator, and a storyteller. Shay is a blogger, a writer, a model, and an energy worker. In this interview, the dynamic duo discusses their creative process, how Danville inspires them, and how they inspire each other. Corey Williams: Tell us a little about yourself (where you’re from, what you do, etc.)? 22
Jameel Austin: My name is Jameel Rashad Austin — I’m a lover of life, a photographer, a storyteller, and a poet. I’m an all-around self-expressionist and content creator. I’m also a father, and I navigate this life with my best friend and life partner, Shay Ayala. Shay Ayala: I wasn’t born here, but I’ve lived in Danville since I was 6 years old. So you could say my roots are native to this soil. I definitely consider it HOME. I am a creative in every sense of the word. I know that term has become overused, but it’s

the best way I can describe what I do. I am a mother to a beautiful baby boy, the kite to a pretty handsome string (Jameel obviously!), and the founder of SolFlower, a community that focuses on the empowerment of women, helping people just like me to rewrite their HERstory, one page at a time and to provide the space to bloom like the sunflower from under the dirt we were buried in. CW: What does creativity mean to you? JA: Creativity is a gift. I look at it like a
radio frequency we all have access to. For some of us it’s our favorite station and we’re constantly tuned in. For others, it’s just the chatter that’s bypassed as they look for their favorite tune. Creativity is a tool for selfexpression and soul connection. Great art brings people together because great artists invite people in to see them as their most vulnerable and authentic selves. SA: Creativity to me is being a filter for every experience thrown your way; positive and negative and transforming it into something far more digestible. A lot of people think they lack creativity just because they aren’t creating masterpieces, but in my opinion everyone has creativity. What may not resonate with one person could be life altering for another. CW: How did your creative journey begin? JA: My journey began in elementary school. My first creative passion was poetry. I remember writing a piece called “StooperMan.” It was about a little boy who wanted to be a superhero when he grew up. When my teacher read it, she asked if she could submit it to a contest to be published. I ended up being a winner in that contest and had my first poem published. That experience proved to me that what I created mattered. SA: I honestly can’t pinpoint when my journey began, but my earliest memory of creating is when I was about 3 years old. My mom had dedicated a wall in our house that I could draw, scribble and color on. My friends were getting in trouble for the same thing I was encouraged to do. Something as simple as that was very influential in my development as an artist. CW: How did you know your creative
eye was evolving? JA: I knew my eye was evolving when I’d drive, look out the window, and think, “Oooh, that’s a dope shot!” Or when I’d watch movies and be more interested in the composition of the shots than I was in the story line. Photography has forever changed the way I see things. I’m much more observant and for that alone I am forever grateful. SA: I knew my creative eye was evolving when I could just look at anything and find art in it. I’d try to point out faces and shapes I’d see in the sky, the trees, my food, and everyone around me would just be like, “What? I don’t see it.” CW: How do you inspire each other? JA: Shay inspires me by reminding me the sky isn’t the limit, it’s the view. She also gives me her honest feedback. If she thinks something is great, she lets me know, and it makes me want to keep going. If she thinks something is less than what I’m capable of, she lets me know, and it motivates me to go harder. SA: This question would have been a lot easier if you asked how do we not inspire each other. Where do I start? Foremost, let me just start by saying to be a freaking mirror to this guy is insane! I’d never seen myself the way he and others viewed me until he came into my life and reminded me of how dope I am as an individual. Our union has been incredibly revealing. Every day has been better than the last. Being able to grow with someone who not only knows your value and worth but affirms it at every opportunity he gets is such a blessing. CW: What are some of your favorite collaborations you have done together?
JA: Currently, my favorite collaboration is our son Phoenix. He’s definitely something else. Besides that, I’d have to say our “HERstory In the Making” video project. For the past two years we’ve been celebrating women’s month by having conversations with different women and documenting them via video. It’s been an awesome experience. SA: Of course, I’d have to start off with our very first photoshoot together. Although I was unaware at that moment, that day would change my life forever. The birth of our son, Phoenix, and our most recent collaborations with “HERstory In the Making” and “The Kite and String.” Honestly, everything we’ve collaborated on has been nothing short of transformational. I don’t even like doing anything alone anymore. I’m always trying to figure out how both of our brands can come together. CW: Any future projects? JA: We’ve got a few projects in mind. The one that excites me the most involves traveling across the country and collecting stories as we go. SA: Oh, most definitely. We literally have a pool of ideas that we collect and put them in “the pocket” for us to revisit in due time. CW: Where can we follow you? JA: You can follow me on IG: @ morethanaphotog, Clubhouse: @ morethanaphotog and my website is jameelrashadaustin.com SA: You can follow me personally @shayayala on Instagram and SolFlower @thesolflow on IG, Twitter and Facebook. You can also visit my blog www.TheSolFlower.com and get a front-row seat in my brain where I share all of my thoughts, unfiltered and totally transparent.

Perhaps one of the most accessible and fastest growing attractions Danville has to offer for nature enthusiasts is the Riverwalk Trail, which extends over 9 miles along the historic Dan River. Home to an array of special events, foot races, and undisturbed wildlife, the trail sees over 150,000 people annually.

The Riverwalk Trail plays an important part in the health, wellness, and social aspects of Danville. Many people use this trail as part of their everyday routine while many more travel from around the region to enjoy all it has to offer on the weekends. The Trail is home to picnickers, parents with strollers, bicyclists, runners, walkers, dog lovers, and the list goes on. But, The Riverwalk isn’t the only outlet for outdoor activities in Danville. On any given day, the playgrounds at Dan Daniel, Ballou Park, Pumpkin Creek, and Grove Park are bursting at the seams with families enjoying the open space. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Danville has been named a Playful City USA since 2007.

Ringgold Trail
Ringgold Trail: Located in Ringgold, VA is the locally beloved Richmond and Danville Rail-Trail, also known as the “Ringgold Trail.” This trail’s 5.5 miles are each rich in nature and history. The railroad routes, that are now trails, linked the confederate capital of Richmond with the Southside. Only Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and the confederate army used this exact route when fleeing from Richmond nearing the end of the war. In 2001, parts of the now trail system, once rail road system, were given to Norfolk Southern Railway system. Currently, there are three trail heads all leading to some of Ringgold’s most beautiful hideaways. Those trailheads include: The Kerns Church Road trailhead, Ringgold Road trailhead, and the central trail head on Shawnee Road. These trails are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities. With accommodations for those with wheelchairs, the trails are made to be enjoyed by all. There is a vintage, red caboose on the trail giving walkers a glimpse into the past.

Angler’s Ridge earned national recognition after being named the number one bike trail system in Virginia and one of the top 25 in the world by singetracks.com. The trails aren’t solely for biking, hikers and trail runners love the challenging terrain, set against a beautiful, natural backdrop of wooded hillsides and creeks just as well. The trail system is home to several annual races including the Green Legs, Hamstrings, and Patriot Challenge trail runs. The trails entwine with nature, giving riders and runners an exhilarating experience. A good quality of life is an important factor in choosing where to establish roots. In a 2015 study, the University of Minnesota determined that everyday access to nature approves the quality of life in older adults. If you’ve ever been on one of the trails and witnessed children playing, it’s a safe bet to say access to nature approves the quality in everyone.

YATES TAVERN The only block-house standing in Pittsylvania County and possibly the state, Yates Tavern is located on U.S. 29 business about a fourth of a mile south of Gretna.
