Throughout human history, birds and their songs have served as special indicators of seasonal shifts. However, in the Middle Ages, these musical creatures held a special significance in poetry. They were ubiquitous, appearing in various forms of literature, from chivalric romances to amorous lyric. Birds were seen as harbingers of spring, symbolizing the arrival of love and renewal, as exemplified in the Harley lyric cited above that proclaims their role in bringing “love to town.”

As spring arrives, birds bring their “love” to River City through their delightful melodies and vibrant flashes of color. Birdwatching here is more than just observing; it’s participating in a timeless symphony of nature. By listening to these songs, Danville locals and visitors connect with a tradition that spans centuries. So, whether you’re a resident or a guest, join in on this activity and enhance your connection to Danville’s natural beauty and history.

In Ballou Park, the melodious tunes of American Robins echo through the air, signaling the onset of the season. Eastern Bluebirds join in the chorus, their chants resonating amidst the blossoming flowers. Cardinals, too, add their voices to the symphony of nature, marking the arrival of this vibrant season.

The Riverwalk offers many convenient locations for everyone from the beginning birder to the expert. All along the Riverwalk, you will find geese and their goslings—though, never get too close for their comfort. Geese are incredibly protective and aggressive (unfortunately, I know from experience). In addition, you will likely spot osprey as they return for breeding season, Double-crested cormorants

as they sunbathe on turtles’ backs along the river, and groups of mallards.

These Riverwalk locations offer a delightful array of bird species to observe. The ever-chattering Tufted Titmouse, Carolina Chickadee, Northern Mockingbird, and Brown Thrasher are just a few of the birds you’ll encounter. Keep an eye out for bright flashes of American Goldfinches, Prothonotary Warblers, and Blue Jays as they swiftly circle in the treetops, adding to the vibrant avian tapestry of these parks. The drumming of Red-bellied Woodpeckers, White-Breasted Nuthatches, and the occasional Pileated Woodpeckers.

Avid local birdwatchers Mary Foster and Matt Anthony also suggest stopping by the Danville Regional Airport in order to spot open field birds such as the Eastern Meadowlark, Grasshopper Sparrow, and Vesper Sparrow.

For those unable to venture outdoors to birdwatch, Danville offers a wonderful alternative: a live osprey camera on the city website. Each spring, this camera provides a glimpse into the lives of these majestic birds. Ospreys, known for their lifelong partnerships, separate during the year but always reunite in Danville for the breeding season. The city is fortunate to host a pair of ospreys and their beautifully constructed nest, where they raise their chicks each spring.

In addition to the parks and Riverwalk, driving through the county offers opportunities to spot various bird species. The Red-Shouldered Hawk is a common sight, soaring overhead. Murders of crows often congregate in fields, creating a striking scene. You’ll also likely encounter groups of sparrows and starlings, adding to the diversity of bird-life in the area.

For those seeking a more leisurely birdwatching experience, the walks around Downtown Chatham and Gretna are highly recommended. These areas provide a blend of urban and rural landscapes, offering a unique mix of bird species to observe. Whether you’re exploring the parks, driving through the county, or strolling through the downtown areas, Danville and its surrounding areas offer a rich and diverse birdwatching experience for enthusiasts of all levels.

The Butterfly Garden at the Danville Science Center in Virginia is a seasonal exhibit that showcases a variety of both native and non-native butterflies from April through mid-September. It’s a feature aimed at all ages, enhancing the visitor’s experience with insights into butterfly life cycles and habitats. Admission to the Butterfly Garden is included with entry to the Science Center, providing an educational yet enjoyable attraction for families and individuals interested in nature and science.

The Danville Science Center, affiliated with the Science Museum of Virginia and established in 1995, is in Danville’s historic tobacco warehouse district. It offers a mix of rotating and permanent exhibits on various scientific themes, including biology, physics,

and natural history, within a facility that emphasizes hands-on learning and engagement. A notable aspect of the center’s history is its establishment in part of the renovated former Danville station, contributing to the revitalization of the Crossing at the Dan area with the addition of a full digital dome theater in 2014 for an immersive educational experience.

This destination is celebrated for making science fun and accessible, providing interactive learning opportunities that appeal to visitors from toddlers to adults. The Butterfly Garden, in particular, is praised for its educational value, offering visitors a close-up view of the intricate beauty and diversity of butterflies, encouraging an appreciation for the natural world.

Danville Outdoors is a community-based initiative created by Danville Parks and Recreation to bring together all aspects of outdoor education, recreation, and conservation in the community. The goal of Danville Outdoors is to enhance promotion and participation in outdoor activities in the Danville region through community partnerships, programs, promotion, and education. To reach this goal, Danville Parks and Recreation collaborates with other outdoor-based organizations to both offer unique opportunities and to reach the community with

existing programs. Danville Parks and Recreation hopes to share all areas of outdoor programs in one central location to better serve the citizens of Danville.

Started in 2020 to address the demand for more outdoor opportunities, Danville Outdoors centers its efforts on four key pillars: environmental education, conservation, stewardship, and recreation. The Danville Outdoors’ vision is to establish a collaborative organization in the Dan River region

that supports opportunities for all people. Danville Outdoors’ strategies to achieve these goals include conducting river or park clean-ups, implementing outdoor education programs, and helping educate the community on all the great outdoor programs and contributions that Danville offers.

“We’re proud of all that Danville Outdoors has accomplished since 2020,” said Maggie Brown, Outdoor Coordinator for Danville Parks and Recreation. “Danville Outdoors has had the privilege of impacting many lives through programming and outreach over the last four years.”

Danville Outdoors’ current partners include the Danville Science Center, Danville Master Gardeners Club, The Brick Running and Tri Store, Dan River Basin Association, Virginia Tech Cooperative Extension, Moss Mountain Outfitters, and Master Naturalists. All partners are currently running outdoor programs that anyone can attend. These programs vary from hikes, to river trips, to tree planting in our parks. Each partner has various programs that range from beginner level to advanced level.

Danville Outdoors is currently working on a project called the Ballou Park Reforestation Project. This project will span over the next ten years and focus on planting trees in parks in Danville that will help increase tree canopy and the water quality in our community.

I am going to share with you some very important information. Would you believe this one thing is perhaps the most important thing, the KEY thing to do to help all your plants, ANY plants, in any garden or landscape planting?

As Master Gardeners, we share this with folks frequently, advising this, in most cases, for all gardeners almost every time we are asked. I am talking about the simple, under-rated and underutilized soil test. Most people ignore a soil test. Probably because it’s not very exciting, definitely gives no immediate gratification and sometimes, you may need to do nothing and everyone wants to do something to their garden to feel like they’re actually gardening.

soil. This is important because many of the nutrients your plants need may already be in the soil, but because the pH is off, the plant can’t absorb and use that nutrient.

For starters, a soil test will tell you your soil’s relative pH… you know, that scale of 0 to 14 that measures soil acidity (going below 7) to alkalinity (measuring above 7). In our region, our soil can measure as low as 3.8 up to 7.5 on the high end. Most plants prefer slightly acidic

Also, most of us know about the 3 macronutrients, N-P-K, as listed on your bag of fertilizer. That’s NitrogenPhosphorus and Potassium. Then there are all the micronutrients; calcium, manganese, copper, boron,

zinc and so forth. The soil test will tell you not only what’s needed to get to the pH you want, but also gives recommendations for what is needed and the amounts needed for all these nutrients as well.

Let me give an example of how this test can save you money. Let’s say you want to plant some blueberry bushes. If you had tested your soil and found it to be around 6.8 in the area where you want to plant them,

grass may grow pretty well there, but your blueberry bushes want much more acidic soil…as low as a 5 pH, to thrive. The plant can’t use available nutrients well without the acidity of the soil. Sulfur will make the soil more acidic and if this lower pH is achieved, maybe you won’t need as much fertilizer to get them established and thriving. The Highbush blueberry (Vaccinium corymbosum) is native to our region and should be fairly well adapted to our soils and growing conditions, but, just a little sulfur now isn’t going to significantly change the soil acidity for 2 to 3 months, so if you didn’t soil test before planting, you may not affect it much this season. Test before you plant is the takeaway here. So if you started seed trays and still have a couple months before setting them out and hardening off, and planting, soil test now. You’ll have your answers pretty quickly from VT.

For some time now, the researchers who look at all these variables have begun to understand that, the better the microbial activity in the soil, the healthier it is, the more alive it is with naturally occurring organisms, the better it is for what we want to grow. Healthy soil, healthy plants equals less chemicals and inputs.

So this year, please go by the Extension Office and ask for a FREE soil test kit or ask for one when you see the Master Gardeners at the Farmers market on Saturdays starting in May. Follow the instructions for collecting and then send it off. For the cost of shipping and a $10 fee you get a report on what you need to make your soil more healthy. Start with this and maybe you won’t need to add as much other “stuff” to your vegetable or flower gardens this year.

Major Parks

Anglers Park:

381-acre park, with an extensive paved and unpaved trail system, picnic shelter, river access and a boat ramp. The mountain bike trail here has been nationally recognized.

Ballou Park:

107-acre park with indoor facilities, picnic sites and shelters, paved and unpaved trails, an 18-hole disc golf course and a large splash park under construction.

Dan Daniel Memorial Park:

180-acre waterfront park with athletic fields, paved and unpaved trails, picnic shelters, river access, Veterans’ Memorial, and American Legion Post 325 baseball stadium, which plays host to the Danville Otterbots and Danville Dairy Daddies.

Riverfront Park:

Opening this year, the park aims to be a vibrant hub with walking trails, recreation areas, and river access, eventually including a whitewater course. It’s designed to be a community gathering place and a catalyst for revitalizing the historic waterfront district.

Trails

The Riverwalk Trail:

Nature takes center stage at Danville’s Riverwalk Trail. It lays alongside the Dan River, providing a beautiful, scenic atmosphere for those who use the trail as a source of exercise, mediation, or even a place to spend quality time with their family.

The preferred starting point of the trail is located at the Crossing of the Dan entrance in downtown Danville. Here you’ll get a glimpse of Danville’s storied past through the renovated architecture of the tobacco warehouses and the Amtrak Station located near the Danville Science Center. History comes to life as you cross a revived 1856 railroad bridge that overlooks the Dan River. Once across the bridge you have the option of going west or east. If you follow the trail to the left (west) you’ll reach a scenic view courtesy of Union Street Bridge. If you travel the eastern side of the trail, you’ll bear witness to nature in all its glory, including a variety of wildlife.

Ringgold Trail:

Located in Ringgold, VA is the locally beloved Richmond and Danville Rail-Trail, also known as the “Ringgold Trail.” This trail’s 5.5 miles are each rich in nature and history. The railroad routes, that are now trails, linked the confederate capital of Richmond with the Southside. Only Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and the confederate army used this exact route when fleeing from Richmond nearing the end of the war. In 2001, parts of the now trail system, once rail road system, were given to Norfolk Southern Railway system. Currently, there are three trail heads all leading to some of Ringgold’s most beautiful hideaways. Those trailheads include: The Kerns Church Road trailhead, Ringgold Road trailhead, and the central trail head on Shawnee Road. These trails are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities. With accommodations for those with wheelchairs, the trails are made to be

enjoyed by all. There is a vintage, red caboose on the trail giving walkers a glimpse into the past.

Small Parks & Playgrounds

Abreu-Grogan Park:

3 acres with river access, a picnic site, and a boat house where one can rent canoes, kayaks, or paddle boards.

Camilla Williams Park:

This 7-acre park on Memorial Drive has pretty river views, fishing locations, playgrounds, and picnic shelters.

H.B. Moorefield Park:

8-acre park off of 58 west with a picnic site.

M.C. Martin Park:

This 4-acre park is located across from CamillaWilliams Park. It possesses a picnic site.

Bark Park:

This 3-acre park, adjacent to Coates Recreation Center, is the only area in the city where dogs are able to run about lease-free.

Doyle Thomas Park:

This 4-acre neighborhood park, located on Green Street, has a basketball court, picnic site,playground and splash park.

Grove Park:

This 15-acre neighborhood park has a basketball court, picnic shelter, and playground.

Pumpkin Creek Park:

34 acres of mostly undeveloped land; however, this park has athletic fields, a basketball court, a picnic shelter, and a playground.

Wayside Park:

A 50-acre park along the scenic Sycamore Creek, it’s a popular spot for families featuring a destination playground, picnic shelters, pickleball courts, an amphitheater, a rentable pavilion, and even a historic swinging bridge. There are also walking and hiking trails for those who enjoy exploring the natural beauty of the area.

The following parks are located at some of Pittsylvania County’s best schools. That being said, due to the location of the parks being on school property, the hours for public invitation are slightly different from that of any other public park in located in the vicinity of Danville. Each of the following parks are open to the public after 3pm during the scheduled school year;

however, on weekends and during summer vacation, the parks are open to the public anytime during the day. Summer vacation is scheduled after Memorial Day, and before the middle of August.

Titan Park:

Titan Park can be found behind Tunstall Middle School, located on Tunstall High Road in Dry Fork, VA. The park includes a running/ walking track, a playground, a picnic shelter, athletic fields, and restroom facilities.

After seven laps, the track is equal to a mile long, making it a great place to go if one is seeking a good environment to exercise. Titan park is family and pet friendly.

Brosville Walking Park:

Located on Bulldog lane, and home to the Brosville Bulldogs, is the Brosville Walking Track. Six laps on this track equals a full mile. This track located in the Southern Virginia region, is family and pet friendly.

Wildcat Park:

Wildcat Park is located just behind Dan River Middle School on Kentuck Lane. Similar to Titan Park, Wildcat park contains a running/walking track, playground, picnic shelter, and restroom facilities. The track equals one mile after 8 laps are completed

Hawk Park:

Hawk Park is located just behind Gretna Middle School on Coffey Street. Hawk Park contains a running/ walking track, a playground, a picnic shelter, and restroom facilities. Hawk Park’s walking track equals a mile after a long 3.5 laps are completed.

Cavalier Park:

Located at Chatham Middle School on US Highway 29 is Cavalier Park. Chatham Cavs enjoy the walking track,

playground, and picnic shelter that are all implemented in Cavalier Park. On Cavalier Park’s walking track, 8 laps are equal to one mile.

Other Ways to Experience Nature in the Area

Danville Bike Share System

No bike? No problem. Danville has teamed with Tandem Mobility to offer a bike share program to their city. There are five rental locations along the Riverwalk. Those locations are Dan Daniel Memorial Park, Sandy Creek, the Crossing at the Dan, Main Street Plaza, and Biscuitville restaurant. Rides are $3 per hour. Mountain Biking

The Angler’s Ridge Trail Association (formerly known as The Southern Virginia Mountain Bike Association) and Danville Parks and Recreation partnered to build one of the longest single-track mountain bike trails in the region. Clocking in at over 30 miles, Angler’s Ridge is a series of stacked-loop trails that offer something to all riders - from novice to pro. Skill level is taken into consideration when building trails. For beginners, the Riverside Drive trail is perfect. For more advanced riders, there are trails such as, Witchback with an 891foot elevation change.

Angler’s Ridge earned national recognition after being named the number one bike trail system in Virginia and one of the top 25 in the world by www.singletracks. com. The trails aren’t solely for biking, hikers and trail runners love the challenging terrain, set against a beautiful, natural backdrop of wooded hillsides and creeks just as well. The trail system is home to several annual races including the Green Legs, Hamstrings, and Patriot Challenge trail runs. The trails entwine

with nature, giving riders and runners an exhilarating experience.

A good quality of life is an important factor in choosing where to establish roots. In a 2015 study, the University of Minnesota determined that everyday access to nature approves the quality of life in older adults. If you’ve ever been on one of the trails and witnessed children playing, it’s a safe bet to say access to nature approves the quality in everyone.
