Danville Danville is an attractive location for start-up businesses as well as established companies due to the City’s desire to stay ahead of the technology curve. Danville is the regional hub that connects many communities throughout Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina. This river city is a nature-lover’s dream. Danville’s Riverwalk Trail offers a wide variety of healthy, outdoor activities including peaceful walks along the river and mountain biking at Angler’s Ridge. These biking trails were named the best in Virginia and top 25 in the world. There are many other parks with amenities such as tennis courts and baseball fields located throughout the city. Danville has a “city” atmosphere with a comforting small-town

feel. Close relationships and a general caring for your neighbor’s well-being are just a few of the special traits Danville offers its residents. There is a “helping hand” philosophy that makes Danville a positive and

strong community.

Gretna Community spirit thrives throughout Gretna. Revitalization for a Greater Gretna, a group of visionaries, is helping to reboot Gretna without sacrificing any of its great history. Upon entering Gretna, you are welcomed by a sign that reads, “Gretna — A Railroad Village.” Rich in railroad history, Gretna was a link to the Lynchburg & Danville Railroad. In 1872, Jeremiah Talboot deeded a right-of-way to the Railroad, knowing the prosperity that would come to the Town via the railroad. Many trains passed through Gretna, which was then called Elba, including the Old 97, immortalized in the wreck of 1903. Gretna embraces the roots upon which the town was founded while strengthening the community with goals of moving forward in the future. The Town’s slogan, “Ain’t no big thing, but it’s growing”

Call It Home The Dan River Region is a great place to call home. It is a region that has managed to preserve its rich history while simultaneously embracing the new age of technology; a region with “big city” conveniences and “small town” ambience. It is a great place to build a career, raise a family or retire. Consider yourself warned: Once you experience the heart of the Region, you may never want to leave.

Variety. If variety is the spice of life, then the Dan River Region’s housing market is seasoned to perfection. Whatever your taste in housing, the Dan River Region provides a host of choices: Millionaires’ Row along Danville’s Main Street with its beautiful homes of Victorian and Edwardian architecture; a renovated loft

in our “Reimagined” River District with a spectacular view of the Dan River; or a chalet overlooking a beautiful lake shore. It’s all here!

Convenience. In the Dan River

Region you are only minutes away from everything! Whether you are headed to work, the grocery store, school, your place of worship, work, a ball game, or the movies, your destination is only a “hop, skip, and jump” away. Traffic jams and long commutes are non-issues throughout the Region. Whenever you travel to or from the Dan River Region, Raleigh-Durham International airport (70 minutes) and Greensboro Regional airport (50 minutes) are only a short drive away.

Great Neighborhoods. Do you want to live where you can borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor, walk your dog, where kids play in the sprinkler in the summer, and catch fireflies in the back yard? There are a great number of subdivisions throughout the city and county to choose from and one just right for your family. Great Value & Variety.

The Dan River Region offers homes in a variety of styles and vintages, with some of the best real estate prices in the country, starting well below $100,000. Places Rated Almanac magazine ranked Danville the 61st most affordable place to live in the United States, with the 11th lowest housing costs out of 351 metropolitan areas.

The Old West End The Old West End (OWE) was built on the values of elegance, living of the highest quality, and the finest of architectures. To this day, those values still live and project themselves into the streets where this historical district resides. OWE houses many breathtaking houses of worship. Churches of the OWE, much like its homes, possess a certain uniqueness because of its detailed architecture. Not one church is identical, yet all of them are equally effective in the appeal of the Old West End. OWE’s amenities and sources of entertainment are also rich in history, such as The Danville Museum of Fine Art and History, The Langhorne House Museum, the Main Line Trolley, and Millionaires’ Row. Adding to this favorable business climate is a plethora of publicly owned shovel and infrastructure ready sites that can meet any industry’s needs: From 10-acre sites in our researchfocused Cyber Park to 3,528-acres in the Southern Virginia Megasite at Berry Hill – Virginia’s largest megasite and one of the Nation’s premiere sites for future automotive and aerospace operations. What Makes the Dan River Region a

Business Hub? An interview with Jason Wells, President of Kyocera SGS Tech Hub LLC

What makes Danville a great place to do business? JW: After searching several various sites, Danville became an immediate frontrunner and ideal choice for us. When I am asked this question, I usually sum it up as follows: • One of the best workforce development pipelines in the nation. Danville has built a tremendous education system for developing world-class technicians for the advanced manufacturing sector. This pipeline has a strong emphasis on not simply hard skills, but also the necessary soft skills to thrive in today’s multifaceted manufacturing environment. They train on the most state-of-the-art technologically relevant equipment that provides a level of understanding not possible on traditional equipment. There are multiple exit points at which I

can source potential employees along the workforce pipeline. Every manufacturing facility has various skill-level needs throughout their structure. I have incredible access to entry level from machining students coming out of the high-school program, highly proficient levels coming out of the two- year degreed program, advanced level through the additional accreditations achieved at the third-year Integrated Machining level, and highly educated through to the University level. Since coming to Danville, I have pulled talent from each of these levels. • Danville is the only city we visited during our various tours that had a clear vision and path of who it was and where it wanted to go. The city officials only spoke and showed us what they have done, are doing, and will do. The city showed a strong organized support of this vision and the leaders within the community have certainly invested into making this happen. It is very reassuring to a company to know you are moving into a community that is committed and results oriented. It was one less thing we had to worry about. • I often tell people I hire based on character more than skills. We can teach skills, but you cannot teach hard work ethic, honesty, loyalty, a desire to do well, etcetera. These are all characteristics that shined brightly upon our visit to Danville and solidified

6 2 COM E V I S I T O U R T O W N .com • D anvi l l e, Vir g ini a

Breaking Ground at Kyocera Photo Provided by Danville Economic Development

that the quality of the people combined with the world-class education system provided us, as an employer, an unfair competitive advantage.

What is Danville’s greatest strength, in terms of economic development? JW: Danville and Pittsylvania County are pro business. More importantly, they are pro-manufacturing. This is really important, as not all communities get this. In fact, I have opened other facilities, so I have a really good gauge to compare experiences. This experience was incredibly easy and painless. The

cooperation we received and continue to receive allow us to gain the necessary momentum to accomplish many monumental tasks with very little pain. We went through the process of building a $5M facility and a complete Greenfield project with no issues at all. When I say no issues, I truly mean this, as we met every goal, deadline, and milestone of an 18-month complex process with virtually no surprises or major overages, which is unheard of. This would have not been possible without the incredible support, assistance in planning, due diligence, and quick response time of these communities elected officials, government offices, leaders, and community supporters.

How do you feel Danville is positioned, economically, for the future? JW: I feel strongly that Danville only continues to strengthen itself into a position of becoming a leading manufacturing hub. I say this based on a variety of reasons that made us want to be a catalyst and pioneer of sorts in this region: • Geographically, Danville is in a true vantage point. It sits in the middle of the eastern seaboard and within a 12-hour logistics radius of over 60% of the industrial population of this country. It has a location that has a

very convenient connection to the Southeast, Northeast, Midwest, MidAtlantic, and Central business regions. • Danville has invested in developing the right workforce for industry. It has focused on high- level skilled labor and technicians. In any given industrial facility, you need 8-10 skilled labor/technicians to every one Engineer. In your typical facility of 100, this means you need 10 engineers and 90 technicians. A bulk of your workforce are the people that work in the facility making the product and not in the office. Wise manufacturing Continued to Page 66

companies realize this ratio and will locate where they can easily source the vast majority of their labor, as opposed to catering to the few. In addition, Danville continues to grow that pipeline I discussed earlier. • Pro-manufacturing environment. I expanded on this from above. This

has to be stressed, that this community has not only clearly defined philosophies and a culture around supporting manufacturing but has also invested into an infrastructure that supports the demands and needs of manufacturing.

What makes Danville a business-friendly city? JW: As a newcomer to Danville, but a visitor for a very long time, I am impressed with how welcomed the citizens have made me feel. When I ate at restaurants or visited local shopping

opportunities with our organization. I would get business owners that would go out of their way to learn who I was and engage with me. Perhaps one of the most accessible and fastest growing attractions Danville has to offer for nature enthusiasts is the Riverwalk Trail, which extends over 9 miles along the historic Dan River. Home to an array of special events, foot races, and undisturbed wildlife, the trail sees over 150,000 people annually.

The Riverwalk Trail plays an important part in the health, wellness, and social aspects of Danville. Many people use this trail as part of their everyday routine while many more travel from around the region to enjoy all it has to offer on the weekends. The Trail is home to picnickers, parents with strollers, bicyclists, runners, walkers, dog lovers, and the list goes on. But, The Riverwalk isn’t the only outlet for outdoor activities in Danville. On any given day, the playgrounds at Dan Daniel, Ballou Park, Pumpkin Creek, and Grove Park are bursting at the seams with families enjoying the open space. It shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone that Danville has been named a Playful City USA since 2007.

Ringgold Trail

Ringgold Trail: Located in Ringgold, VA is the locally beloved Richmond and Danville Rail-Trail, also known as the “Ringgold Trail.” This trail’s 5.5 miles are each rich in nature and history. The railroad routes, that are now trails, linked the confederate capital of Richmond with the Southside. Only Confederate president, Jefferson Davis, and the confederate army used this exact route when fleeing from Richmond nearing the end of the war. In 2001, parts of the now trail system, once rail road system, were given to Norfolk Southern Railway system. Currently, there are three trail heads all leading to some of Ringgold’s most beautiful hideaways. Those trailheads include: The Kerns Church Road trailhead, Ringgold Road trailhead, and the central trail head on Shawnee Road. These trails are very accessible for people of all ages and abilities. With accommodations for those with wheelchairs, the trails are made to be enjoyed by all. There is a vintage, red caboose on the trail giving walkers a glimpse into the past.

pro. Skill level is taken into consideration when building trails. For beginners, the Riverside Drive trail is perfect. For more advanced riders, there are trails such as, Witchback with an 891-foot elevation change. Angler’s Ridge earned national recognition after being named the number one bike trail system in Virginia and one of the top 25 in the world by singetracks.com. The trails aren’t solely for biking, hikers and trail runners love the challenging terrain, set against a beautiful, natural backdrop of wooded hillsides and creeks just as well. The trail system is home to several annual races including the Green Legs, Hamstrings, and Patriot Challenge trail runs. The trails entwine with nature, giving riders and runners an exhilarating experience. A good quality of life is an important factor in choosing where to establish roots. In a 2015 study, the University of Minnesota determined that everyday access to nature approves the quality of life in older adults. If you’ve ever been on one of the trails and witnessed children playing, it’s a safe bet to say access to nature approves the quality in everyone.

Westover Christian Academy For the past two school years, Westover Christian Academy has been proud to call John Cline their head administrator. His friendly disposition and ability to lead by example have earned him the nickname, “Papa John”. He was exactly what the school needed when he started here in August of 2017, and his impact on the students and staff of Westover has not gone unnoticed. Papa John started his career at Westover in July of 2002 as the youth pastor of Westover Baptist Church. In 2013, he left to begin his work at a local humanitarian organization called God’s Pit Crew. He returned to Westover four years later, and has been the head administrator ever since.

When asked about his favorite part of his job, he instantly said, “my favorite part of the job is being back with the students.” He has created a family-like rapport with each student, while maintaining his authority and respect. The students truly enjoy Papa John’s presence, and he enjoys theirs. Our next question was, “Why should someone send their child to WCA?” In his answer, Papa John stressed the importance of providing students with a biblical worldview by saying, “a biblical worldview teaches students how to look at our real world today based on the truths of the Bible.” He talked about the importance of Westover’s daily Bible classes, weekly chapel services, and the teachers’ ability to use biblical truths to help mentor the students. John added, “One of the most important things is that we pray with and for our students every day, and to me that is very special.” Just from this response, you can tell that Westover Christian Academy is a place where a high value is placed on making sure the spiritual and academic well-being of students is addressed on a daily basis.

Photo Provided by Westover Christian Academy

Isaiah 26:3 says, “Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee: because he trusteth in Thee.” Papa John quotes this as his favorite Bible verse. “I have seen that verse used with people that were completely distraught,” he explained, “and when that verse was used, I’ve seen the power of that verse bring those people back under the love and peace that only He can offer.” Papa John’s humble personality combined with his wise leadership make him the great administrator that he is. His presence at Westover Christian Academy is a true blessing, and everyone looks forward to having him as their leader for many years to come. This article was written by Ashlyn Abts, an eighth-grade student at Westover Christian Academy.

Danville Community College Danville Community College (DCC), which is part of the Virginia Community College System, offers more than 100 areas of study ranging from short-term career training to two-year degrees that transfer to many fouryear colleges and universities.

DCC offers classes at its main campus in Danville as well as in South Boston at the Southern Virginia Higher Education Center. Many classes are available online, including some completely online programs that may be completed from anywhere – including cybersecurity, e-commerce, and logistics management. Many workforce programs are offered at the Regional Center for Advanced Technology & Training, and a new hightech welding building and completely renovated Engineering & Industrial Technology building was unveiled in spring 2018.

DCC is the first rural community college to achieve this prestigious endorsement, which was announced by a visit by the governor in January 2017. DCC information technology graduates have been hired by companies such as Hewlett-Packard Enterprise, Noblis, Microsoft, Tekabyte, Gamewood, the City of Danville, Pittsylvania County, Virginia Community College System, Virginia Bank and Trust, and American National Bank, among others.

College transfer is the largest area of study at DCC, with associate degrees in science, engineering, liberal arts, and social science designed to kick-start the path to a bachelor’s degree. DCC has articulation agreements with 40+ colleges and universities, meaning that students who meet certain requirements are automatically accepted into the fouryear institution after graduating from DCC. Completing the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at DCC saves at least $15,000 in tuition for an in-state, public university – much more if the student goes out-of-state or to a private school.
