Greetings! On behalf of the citizens of Danville and our region, I extend a warm welcome to you. Our community offers hospitality, warmth and a rich heritage that is unlike any other. This community’s rich heritage began over 225 years ago when the first settlement developed around a shallow place in the Dan River called “Wynne’s Falls.” People at the time correctly realized that this area had plenty to offer those looking for an opportunity to prosper, which exists to this day. Like many cities that experienced rapid growth during the industrial revolution, Danville has had challenges related to a changing economy. Fortunately, there are government and business leaders here today who care deeply about our region and are willing to take the steps necessary to reimagine a future of continued prosperity open to everyone, regardless of background. Over the past several years, we have worked to establish Danville as a regional shopping destination, aggressively pursued industrial retention and recruitment, and reimagined our downtown into an award-winning River District. Thanks to previous investments near the Danville Mall, Danville is now known as a regional shopping destination for big-box retailers along Piedmont Drive, Piney Forest Road, Riverside Drive, and Holt Garrison Parkway. Our economic development teams in Danville and Pittsylvania County are ready to assist existing businesses and to recruit new businesses who plan to locate in either jurisdiction or one of the three jointly owned industrial parks. A focus on Danville’s award-winning River District has led to the renovation of historic structures into professional offices, apartments, public spaces, restaurants, and retail for the thousands of people who live or work in the District and the hundreds of thousands of people who visit these places every year. Our city and region have much to offer both residents and visitors, alike. We benefit from a high quality

Communities Danville Danville is an attractive location for start-up businesses as well as established companies due to the City’s desire to stay ahead of the technology curve. Danville is the regional hub that connects many communities throughout Southern Virginia and Northern North Carolina. This river city is a nature-lover’s dream. Danville’s Riverwalk Trail offers a wide variety of healthy, outdoor activities including peaceful walks along the river and mountain biking at Angler’s Ridge. These biking trails were named the best in Virginia and top 25 in the world. There are many other parks with amenities such as tennis courts and baseball fields located throughout the city. Danville has a “city” atmosphere with a comforting small-town feel. Close relationships and a general caring for your neighbor’s well-being are just a few of the special traits Danville offers its residents. There is a “helping hand” philosophy that makes Danville a positive and strong community.

Chatham Chatham breathes a small-town life from a caring heart. With an illustrious history and stunning architecture, the Town is the perfect landing for those looking for the peaceful life.

8 COM E V I S I T O U R T O W N .com • Danville , V irginia

“Stranger” isn’t a word spoken often in Chatham. The Town welcomes new residents as if they were long lost friends. Chatham is a social community where residents go out of their way to make everyone feel at home. Personal connections make up a good portion of the Town’s welcoming aura. Chatham hosts a population of approximately 1,300 residents year-round.

Gretna Community spirit thrives throughout Gretna. Revitalization for a Greater Gretna, a group of visionaries, is helping to reboot Gretna without sacrificing any of its great history. Upon entering Gretna, you are welcomed by a sign that reads, “Gretna — A Railroad Village.”

Rich in railroad history, Gretna was a link to the Lynchburg & Danville Railroad. In 1872, Jeremiah Talboot deeded a right-of-way to the Railroad, knowing the prosperity that would come to the Town via the railroad. Many trains passed through Gretna, which was then called Elba, including the Old 97, immortalized in the wreck of 1903.

By Hampton Wilkins The Dan River Region is a great place to call home. It is a region that has managed to preserve its rich history while simultaneously embracing the new age of technology; a region with “big city” conveniences and “small town” ambience. It is a great place to build a career, raise a family or retire. Consider yourself warned: Once you experience the heart of the Region, you may never want to leave. Variety. If variety is the spice of life, then the Dan River Region’s housing market is seasoned to perfection. Whatever your taste in housing, the Dan River Region provides a host of choices: Millionaires’ Row along Danville’s Main Street with its beautiful homes of Victorian and Edwardian architecture; a renovated loft in our “Reimagined” River District with a spectacular view of the Dan River; or a chalet overlooking a beautiful lake shore. It’s all here! Convenience. In the Dan River Region you are only minutes away from everything! Whether you are headed to work, the grocery store, school, your place of worship, work, a ball game, or the movies, your destination is only a “hop, skip, and jump” away. Traffic jams and long commutes are non-issues throughout the Region. Whenever you travel to or from the Dan River Region, Raleigh-Durham International airport (70 minutes) and Greensboro Regional airport (50 minutes) are only a short drive away. Great Neighborhoods. Do you want to live where you can

A Perfect Home for You borrow a cup of sugar from your neighbor, walk your dog, where kids play in the sprinkler in the summer, and catch fireflies in the back yard? There are a great number of subdivisions throughout the city and county to choose from and one just right for your family. Great Value & Variety. The Dan River Region offers homes in a variety of styles and vintages, with some of the best real estate prices in the country, starting well below $100,000. Places Rated Almanac magazine ranked Danville the 61st most affordable place to live in the United States, with the 11th lowest housing costs out of 351 metropolitan areas. City Subdivisions. A short drive through Forest Hills gives clear evidence to its name, as beautiful, aged trees and shrubberies line the hilly streets and provide the backdrop for homes in a wide array of architectural styles including Tudor, Georgian, Colonial, and Traditional. One of the City’s oldest neighborhoods, Forest Hills is located off West Main, adjacent to Ballou Park, Averett University, and just a short walk to Danville Regional Medical Center. Other convenient subdivisions include Southwyck Farms, located on Danville’s south side, a short distance from the Virginia-North Carolina border. This neighborhood offers homes built in the seventies to the present. New construction opportunities are also available. Many newcomers like this subdivision because of its convenience to the

The result of this decision was the creation of God’s Storehouse, a new ministry that provided a central location food pantry.

Ensuring those in need have food is only part of God’s Storehouse’s mission. It now has an instructional kitchen to offer tips on getting the most out of money set aside for food as well as healthy cooking options. Planet Fitness, one of the largest and fastestgrowing franchisors and operators of fitness centers in the U.S. and home of the Judgement Free Zone®, ran the October membership sale in its more than 1,400 locations nationwide to support its Judgement Free Generation™ partner, Boys & Girls Clubs of America. The Judgement Free Generation is Planet Fitness’ philanthropic initiative designed to combat the judgement and bullying faced by today’s youth by creating a culture of kindness and encouragement. Bullying has become all-toocommon in today’s society, with 1 in 4 youth reporting that they’ve been bullied and parents of school-aged children citing it as their number one concern. As the home of the Judgement Free Zone®, Planet Fitness is committed to addressing this issue and has funded trainings for more than 2,000 staff from 764 Boys & Girls Clubs across the country through a partnership with the Yale Center for Emotional Intelligence.

From October 2nd through the 31st, Planet Fitness invited everyone to take part in the effort to end bullying. New members had the opportunity to join any Planet Fitness club and 100% of their enrollment fee was donated to the cause. In addition, existing Planet Fitness members could donate $1, $3, or $5 throughout the entire month of October, and write their name on a paper pinup which was displayed at the front desk of their local Planet Fitness. The paper pinups raised $179.50 for the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Danville Area. The Danville Planet Fitness hosted a fun judgement free fitness night for the youth. During their visit, the Boys and Girls completed a 30-minute workout with a certified trainer. The objective was to teach the benefits of being active, develop self-confidence and improve team building skills while having fun. After the workout they enjoyed Pizza with the staff.

charities and giving back The Salvation Army’s mission is to preach the gospel of Jesus Christ without discrimination, and help human needs in his name. With that policy in mind the local branch uses all means to accomplish that goal. Using funds generated from the local Family Store and various other fundraisers, the Salvation Army is able to help people’s needs within the community.

Using the money given at Christmas through the kettles the Salvation Army is able to purchase toys for children in the area. Outside of that, the money left over goes to other various programs throughout the year which return the community.

Ballad Brewing Sometimes a good beer is hard to find. Finding a cask ale beer in this region was nearly impossible— until now. Cask ales are beers that are conditioned naturally using the carbon dioxide given off during secondary fermentation. It is a traditional way of conditioning the beer and was the original way of pulling beer from a wooden cask.

Ballad Brewing has two cask taps that are poured using their beer engine, also known as a hand pump, which manually pulls beer from the cask using a pump. According to Ballad’s Tim Meyers, the casks lead to a lot of experimentation and fun. When experimenting, Ballad can take 10.8 gallons of a regularly produced recipe and add special flavoring ingredients to the mix like fruits, spices, or additional dry hops.

Ballad Brewing, with its spacious interior and alley-turned-patio, has already become a regional destination, featuring twelve different beers on tap.

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research

The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research is a beacon for Southern Virginia. The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research (IALR) serves all Virginia; however, most of the Institute’s efforts are focused within the Southern Virginia region which includes the counties of Patrick, Franklin, Henry, Pittsylvania, Halifax, and Mecklenberg along with the cities of Martinsville and Danville. IALR is setup to leverage and broker resources for Southern Virginia. Several examples of this “catalyst-like” approach include: the opening of The Gene Haas Center for Integrated Machining (Capstone), a record number of STEM Mobile Learning Lab participants (over 10,000 in 2015), serving as the host sites for the

Governor’s First AgBio Conference and the U.S. EPA’s National Conference on Phytoremediation, and actively leading multiple research projects with regional growers, entrepreneurs, and existing industry. The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research serves the region and precipitates positive change while focusing on four key areas: advanced learning opportunities focused on STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics), applied research, workforce development, and economic development. Applied Research: The Research Department includes six PhD scientists and six technicians focused on applied research projects based on

Learning opportunities for people of all ages continue to focus on science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The fourth annual STEM-H Summit was a success with more than 455 attendees. The STEM Mobile Learning Lab advances K-12 science, technology, engineering and math education by providing quality, hands-on activities for students. Students and educators within IALR’s service region enjoy a high level of exposure to STEM education when they board the STEM Mobile Learning Lab. The lab hosts students at IALR and also travels around visiting schools, neighborhoods, organizations, and community events. During 2016, IALR’s STEM Mobile Learning Lab

Dan River Region Collaborative: The Institute for Advanced Learning and Research provides project management services and serves as the fiscal agent for the Dan River Region Collaborative. The Dan River Region Collaborative was founded in 2008 to address workforce development in the Dan River Region of Virginia. Utilizing a sector strategy approach, the Collaborative promotes regional partnerships of employers, educators, workforce developers and other stakeholders to address the skills needs of regional employers. Within the industry partnerships, the

Technology Collaborative’s efforts focus on capacity building, systems change, and policy advocacy. One of the Collaborative’s most significant projects is the Career ChoICE SOVA Youth Expo. Over 250 regional employers and volunteers prepare over 70 hands-on activities to engage middle and high school students and expose them to career opportunities available throughout the region. The two-day event serves approximately 4,000 students from seven school divisions. Career ChoICE highlights existing opportunities so that students, early on, will express a desire to stay in the region, based on an informed career decision with a clear understanding about the skills they need, what levels of education are required and the salaries they can expect. More importantly, this is an opportunity for the region to begin an intentional effort to build a pipeline of students in strategic sectors that are aligned with economic development interests. The Parks of Danville With over 680 acres of parks and trails, 25 athletic fields, 23 playgrounds, 25 picnic sites and shelters, 30 miles of mountain bike trails, 9 miles of Riverwalk Trail, a skate park, a dog park, 2 disc-golf courses, a ropes course, a zip line, 2 libraries, and over 2,000 programs and events, there are certainly plenty of opportunities within the city limits.

Perhaps one of the most accessible and fastest growing attractions Danville has to offer is the Riverwalk Trail, which extends over 9 miles along the historic Dan River. The multi-purpose greenway connects four parks to multiple businesses, public places, and the newly renovated River District. Home to an array of special events, foot races, and undisturbed wildlife, the trail sees over 150,000 people annually.

The Riverwalk Trail plays an important part in the health, wellness, and social aspects of Danville. Many people use this trail as part of their everyday routine while many more travel from around the region to enjoy it on the weekends.

Clean, well-maintained parks and public spaces are vital to our community. The Riverwalk is just one of the many amenities maintained by Parks and Recreation. On any given day, the playgrounds at Dan Daniel, Ballou Park, Pumpkin Creek, and Grove Parks are bursting at the seam with families enjoying their day while the open spaces within the park system and along the river play home to picnics, parents with strollers, bicyclists, runners, walkers, dog lovers, and more. The Department of Parks and Recreation also boasts over 2,000 recreation programs a year and services all ages from preschoolers to seniors. All-inclusive, the department also operates one of the few community-based therapeutic programs in the state. Many of the programs are free to the public and are accessible by all families in the region. From week-long summer camps to special events, Danville Parks and Recreation has the program or service you have been looking for to get you involved in our community.

The Riverwalk Trail Nature takes center stage at Danville’s Riverwalk Trail. This 8.5 mile paved trail is a focal point when mentioning the many attractions Danville has to offer. Nestled along the Dan River, the scenic Riverwalk Trail provides a beautiful backdrop for exercise, “me” time, or family fun. The preferred starting point is at the Crossing of the Dan entrance in downtown Danville. Here you’ll get a glimpse of Danville’s storied past through the architecture of the renovated tobacco warehouses and the Amtrak Station located near the Danville Science Center. History comes to life as you cross a revived 1856 railroad bridge that overlooks the Dan River. Once across the bridge you have the option of going west or east. If you follow the trail to the left (west) you’ll reach a scenic view courtesy of Union Street Bridge. If you travel the eastern side of the trail, you’ll bear witness to nature in all its glory including a variety of wildlife. The Danville Family YMCA just isn’t a workout facility. It focuses on more than simply your physical health and looks to strengthen your ties to the community. Through the volunteer programs, Y programs, and group exercise classes the Y strives to not only make your experience at the gym a more enjoyable one, but also to introduce you to other like-minded people and form friendships that may carry over outside of the gym.

At the center of the Y are three core values — youth development, healthy living, and social responsibility. Whether you’re a fitness enthusiast or you’re looking for a place where your children can learn and play, the Y has something for everyone. The Danville Family YMCA takes its role in the community seriously. It wants to be a difference in the community and has the tools to do it.

Four things — caring, honesty, respect, and responsibly — are instilled in every program the Danville Family YMCA offers. It so happens that these four things are also the glue that binds a strong community.

cybersecurity, e-commerce, and logistics management. Many workforce programs are offered at the Regional Center for Advanced Technology & Training, and a new high-tech welding building and completely renovated Engineering & Industrial Technology building will be unveiled in spring 2018. In the past year, DCC has obtained national recognition and added several exciting new programs. DCC’s cybersecurity programs were recognized by the National Security Agency (NSA) and Department of Homeland Security (DHS) as a National Center of Academic Excellence in Cyber Defense TwoYear Education. DCC joins just three other community colleges in Virginia

Also in high demand are DCC’s nursing graduates, due to the high quality of the program. DCC’s licensed practical nursing students have maintained a perfect pass rate on the NCLEX state board exams since 2012 and registered nursing students since 2014. Nurses undergo a rigorous two-year program in a realistic hospital simulation lab environment. With a nationwide nursing shortage, last year’s graduates all had received job offers before graduation. DCC has also expanded its arts offerings, adding new classes in metal sculpture and acoustic guitarbuilding in Fall 2017. DCC offers the only college lutherie program in the region where students can learn to build and repair acoustic or electric instruments and use Dreadnaught kits from Martin Guitar. DCC’s small business management classes give students the chance to turn their artistic talent into a business if they so choose. College transfer is the largest area of study at DCC, with associate degrees

in science, engineering, liberal arts, and social science designed to kick-start the path to a bachelor’s degree. DCC has articulation agreements with 40+ colleges and universities, meaning that students who meet certain requirements are automatically accepted into the four-year institution after graduating from DCC. Completing the first two years of a bachelor’s degree at DCC saves at least $15,000 in tuition for an in-state, public university – much more if the student goes out-of-state or to a private school. Area high school students in Danville, Pittsylvania County, and Halifax County have the opportunity to earn college credit and workforce credentials at no cost to their families, thanks to DCC’s dual enrollment program. Students can take collegelevel classes in fields such as precision machining, information technology, cosmetology, automotive, and general education, getting a head start on their associate degree or certification. DCC’s workforce programs are designed with industry needs in mind, preparing students for indemand careers in just a few months. Short-term career training programs can be completed in 4 to 10 months in areas such as welding,

The University’s mission is to prepare students to serve and lead as catalysts for positive change, and the University’s Center for Community Engagement and Career Competitiveness (CCECC) puts that mission into action by focusing on three areas: (1) experiential learning, including service-learning, internships and studies abroad; (2) community and civic initiatives, including volunteerism, the National Bonner Leader Program and national service; and (3) career competitiveness, in which all Averett students benefit from a comprehensive career development program beginning in their first semester. Averett makes sure its students participate in community service projects throughout the year, with students working with partnering organizations such as Habitat for Humanity, Big Brothers Big Sisters, God’s Storehouse, Boys & Girls Clubs, and Special Olympics. Averett is one of the area’s leaders in providing cultural opportunities. Every year, the University hosts an arts series for its students and the surrounding community called Arts@Averett. The series features a variety of performances, lectures, and theatre productions. Past performances and lecturers have included author Sharyn McCrumb; pianist Elyane Laussade; American Shakespeare Center; Richmond Ballet; the Averett Singers; and student art shows. In addition, the University boasts 16 NCAA Division III athletic teams after announcing the addition of three new sports in 2016. They include men’s and women’s lacrosse and wrestling, all which will begin play in the 201718 academic year. The Cougars compete in the USA South Conference. Several of the teams regularly compete in NCAA tournament competitions. The home base for Averett Athletics is the University’s North Campus, which houses the multi-million dollar Frank R. Campbell Stadium and state-of-the-art field for football, soccer, and lacrosse.

The event inspired the famous ballad of the same name. Marker is located on U.S. 58 between Locust Lane and North Main Street at the train crash site. The Old 97 is depicted in Danville’s first historic mural which was completed in December 2005 by mural artist and illustrator Wes Hardin.

Yates Tavern www.pittsylvaniahistorical society.org The only block-house standing in Pittsylvania County and possibly the state, Yates Tavern is located on U.S. 29 business about a fourth of a mile south of Gretna. It was built around 1750 and sheltered travelers in what was then a western wilderness. The Yates family came to Pittsylvania County earlier than 1767 when both John Yates and John Yates Jr. were listed among the first tithables. It is not clear which of the Yates family members built the tavern.

Bright Leaf Brew Fest Bright Leaf Brew Fest (Brew Fest) is an annual event held the second Saturday in November. Boasting more than 100 beers and ciders from over 40 breweries to sample, the event is a consistent sell out.

Over its 11-year existence, Brew Fest has become much more than just a tasting event. The beverages pair well with a variety of live music including local and regional Americana, bluegrass, folk, and blues.

Bright Leaf Brew Fest is held at Danville’s Historic Community Market. For more information visit www.blbf.org.
